Faizun Kamal, a franchise consultant, shares with 100 Entrepreneurs details about franchises, becoming a franchisee, and why veterans make great franchisees. Did you know that 1 out of 7 franchisees are veterans and that franchises are looking to recruit veteran franchisees because they are particularly well suited to making franchise businesses successful? She also talks about VetFran, a program that offers discounted franchise fees to veterans interested in becoming a franchisee.
Dina Dwyer-Owens is the brand ambassador (Head Cheerleader) of the Dwyer Group. America also knows her for participating in CBS's Emmy-winning hit reality show “Undercover Boss” and the first-ever special episode “Undercover Boss: Epic Bosses.” Dina is a certified franchise executive with more than 35 years of industry experience, 15 years as CEO of Dwyer Group. That business, headquartered in Waco, Texas, now includes 20 service brands and supports franchise organizations under the umbrella brand Neighborly in the United States and Neighbourly in Canada. Neighborly is a community of experts who repair, maintain, and enhance properties united under one platform to better meet the needs of today's consumer. Collectively, those service brands and more than 3,200 franchisees make over three million customer calls a year and account for more than $1.7 billion in system-wide sales. In 2010, Dina served as the chair of the International Franchise Association (IFA) in Washington D.C., the world's largest advocacy group for franchising as a business format. She also spearheaded the reintroduction of the IFA's VetFran program in 2001, which now includes some 645 franchisors that offer franchising financial incentives to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. More than 6,000 military veterans now own a franchise through the VetFran program. Dina is the author of two books: Live R.I.C.H. and Values, Inc. that both share her global message for living and leading with a proven code of values. Dina is married to Mike Owens and they have two wonderful and entrepreneurial children, an amazing daughter-in-law and son-in-law and praying for many grandchildren. What you'll learn about in this episode: Why Dina believes employees and franchisees leading with the business values are the foundation for success in the Dwyer Group How a 37 year old organization achieved a phenomenal growth rate of 125 percent over the past four years Dina's belief that clarity of values and keeping those values front and center within the organization not only holds them accountable to the high standards they've established but promotes the culture they want within the group What the R.I.C.H. system is and what it stands for Why people are more successful when they love what they do and when they have a certain sense of clarity about what they really want out of their individual lives Why Dina feels that if her franchisees don't love what they're doing, they aren't best for her organization, which is why she wants people to seek clarity about their goals and dreams How adopting the R.I.C.H. system of values transformed Dina's business and the interesting, outside the box, way she got employees onboard for adopting these new values for her corporation The reason Dina believes her company hasn't experienced the growing pains many others do, despite such impressive growth in a relatively short span of time Why Dina believes it is so important to keep your culture as a business and how she keeps that culture as the organization grows and the business evolves The biggest challenges Dina has faced while growing her business and how she responded to the challenge Why Dina believed she was the best person for her role in the organization despite a few doubters around her Ways to contact Dina: Website: www.dinadwyerowens.com Website: www.neighborlyfranchises.com Free workbook: www.dinadwyerowens.com/free-workbook

This week on Franchise Today the topic is culture and who better to discuss with co-hosts Stan Friedman and Paul Segreto than someone from a franchise organization that lives and breathes culture and everything that are key components to culture. This week's guest fits the bill perfectly and from an organization, The Dwyer Group that epitomizes the right culture in franchising. A returning guest to Franchise Today is Mark Liston, President of Glass Doctor, a brand of The Dwyer Group. In franchising since 1981, Mark has been very involved with the International Franchise Association in a variety of roles and is currently on the Board of Governors for the Certified Franchise Executive Board, having served as Chairman of that Board for two years. He is also on the Educational Foundations Board of Trustees. Previously he served the VetFran and Marketing and PR Committees. Franchise Today airs LIVE every Wednesday at 11AM CT / 12PM ET. Each show is available on-demand on iTunes. Franchise Today is also on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/FranchiseToday.
First, we are meeting with Kevin Wilkerson. Kevin and Laurel Wilkerson own a Marco's Pizza franchise in Broken Arrow, OK. Kevin spent 24 years as an Army Infantry Officer and retired in 2005 as a full Colonel. Laurel served on active duty with the Army as an attorney for over 20 years, retiring in 2008. He later learned of Marco's and decided to get involved in entrepreneurship. Next, we meet with Chris Rolen. Chris spent eight years on active duty in the Army, including a 2002 deployment to Iraq for Operation Enduring Freedom. Chris decided to open a Weed Man franchise and received a 25% veteran's discount. He opened Weed Man of Loveland in January 2012 and participates in a program called Project Evergreen, a service that reaches out to wounded warriors. Did you know one in three seniors in the United States is a veteran or surviving spouse of a veteran? Every day, many of these men and women go without the health care they need simply because of lack of information or assistance. Recognizing this, Home Helpers, one of the nation's leading senior care franchises specializing in comprehensive home healthcare services and companionship, has teamed up with Veterans Care Coordination to provide an easier path for veterans and surviving spouses to receive the benefits to which they are entitled and deserve. We are meeting with Emma Dickison, the President of Home Helpers – For over a decade, Home Helpers' Compassionate Caregivers have been providing one-on-one companion care and in home care services to seniors, new and expectant mothers, working parents and individuals in need of continuing and recuperative home care.
Did you know that according to a recent Small Business Administration study, (http://www.sba.gov/sites/default/files/files/rs384.pdf) veterans in the private sector are at least 45 percent more likely than those with no active-duty military experience to be self-employed. Today we are meeting with Sean Falk – A former US Marine infantry officer who served more than 8 years in active duty and reserves, including tours during Operation Desert Storm and in Bosnia. Falk now owns 10 franchised businesses in several states. And with the current unemployment rate for young male veterans who served during the Gulf War II era hovering around 21% (more than double the national average), entrepreneurship is becoming a very attractive option for thousands of returning service members. Franchising continues to be a popular way for veterans to take control of their futures. In fact, Great American Cookies recently launched the Great American Patriot program (www.greatamericancookies.com/patriot) which provides a 40% discount to veterans. In part 1, we meet with Sean Falk, a former US Marine infantry officer who served more than 8 years in active duty and reserves, including tours during Operation Desert Storm and in Bosnia. Falk now owns 10 franchised businesses in several states. In part 2, we will meet with Derek Henze of Toppers Pizza. Marty had the opportunity to meet Derek several years ago. Derek Henze, 28, is a franchisee with Toppers Pizza. He has signed for 3 stores in Minneapolis, MN market, expecting to open his first store in July 2011. Derek served in the US Army for eight years as a Field Artillery Specialist and Army Paralegal, serving one tour in Iraq from 2003-2004.
