Repurpose your mascara wand to rehabilitate wounded animals! Wands For Wildlife is a nonprofit dedicated to collecting and distributing mascara wands to aid in animal rehabilitation. The wand is the applicator end that has bristles to apply product to your eyelashes. The wands are an ideal tool as the bristles are supple, don't break easily, and come in so many shapes. Usually, these are a one time time use plastic and are thrown away as they cannot be recycled. Wands For Wildlife has found a way to repurposes this single use plastic. The variety of shapes are best suited for different scenarios like cleaning soot off wings or fur, removing larvae, cleaning a turtle's neck folds, etc. Animals will need to be rehabilitated if they have been injured in natural disasters, injured by humans, left abandon, etc. Guest speaker, Kelly Doktor, is a volunteer with W4W and received over 1 million views on her original promotional post! She received 15,000 mascara wands in the first couple of weeks! Collection can be held by anyone willing to ship mascara wands to Wands For Wildlife in North Carolina. Currently, due to the pandemic, the collection process has stopped, however, this has given the volunteers ample time to distribute backed up supply to the rehabilitators. Collection is estimated to resume in March 2021. Check their website or sign up for the newsletter announcement for when collection resumes as well as the addresswww.wandsforwildlife.orgW4W has also partnered with artists who will take the mascara wands and create murals out of them! Checkout my Instagram @moving.with.madison for a picture of the Mascara Owl!Animal safety is a fantastic way humans can show responsibility for our part on this planet. You can select W4W to be your charity on Amazon Smile.Remember, if there is something in your house you typically throw out, check online to see if there is another alternative. Maybe someone makes repurposed art, maybe there is a nonprofit who reuses it, or maybe there is a DIY project you can do with it. Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle (Compost)
The Writes4Women Podcast comes full circle with this episode featuring the best selling and multi-talented sister authors Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell. Kate and Belinda were the very first guests Pam and Kel had on the W4W podcast 3 years ago, where they discussed a project they were excited about bringing to life together over coming years. A non-fiction book about their ancestor, Charlotte Waring Atkinson. Charlotte carries the mantel of having written the first ever picture book and holds a special place in Australian literary history. 3 years later they are back on the podcast to talk about the culmination of that dream, the release of their book "Searching for Charlotte": It could not be more fitting that this is the last interview for 2020 and the end of an era for W4W. In this ep of W4W we bring you a special chat between long time friends and Room to Read ambassadors, Jennie Orchard and Pamela Cook. Jennie is talking to Pam about the stunning book she curated for the 20th anniversary of Room to Read entitled "The Gifts of Reading," which brings together some of the greats literary hearts and minds of our time to discuss the books they like to give. All proceeds from the sale of his book goes to Room to Read. If it weren't for Jennie Orchard and Room to Read, this podcast may never have been born. They were the threads that connected Pam with Kel and in the beginning Writes4Women was just as much about creating a vehicle to raise awareness for Room to Read as it was about celebrating women writers, at a time when men seemed to claim most of the space and the attention. It seems only fitting to wind up 2020 and this era of Writes4Women with an interview with Jennie all about the book she curated that celebrates the gifts of reading whilst raising money for Room to Read. "THE GIFTS OF READING" An anthology of essays about the joys of reading and of giving books, from some of the world's most beloved writers. Inspired by and including Robert Macfarlane's own essay, 'The Gifts of Reading', publishing to coincide with the 20th anniversary of global literacy non-profit, Room to Read 'This story, like so many stories, begins with a gift. The gift, like so many gifts, was a book...' So begins the essay by Robert Macfarlane that inspired this collection. In this cornucopia of an anthology, you will find essays by some of the world's most beloved novelists, nonfiction writers, essayists and poets. Published to coincide with the 20th anniversary of global literacy non-profit, Room to Read, The Gifts of Reading forms inspiring, unforgettable, irresistible proof of the power and necessity of books and reading. We are extremely delighted to have Rae Cairns on the Convo Couch to talk about the release of her debut novel "The Good Mother." Rae and Pam have been friends and writing comrades for years, Rae was our W4W "emerging writer" on the first version of the podcast and it is incredibly exciting to be here with her as she realises her book to smashing reviews. Rae's pathway to publication has been fraught but she has never given up on her writing or her book, and is an inspiration to us all. Please join us in giving her the support she deserves as she births it out into the world. THE GOOD MOTHER: She’s protected them from the truth. Can she save them from her past? Australian soccer mum Sarah Calhoun keeps the terrifying secrets of her time as an overseas aid worker from everyone she loves. Until two men from Northern Ireland hunt her down - one an obsessive policeman with demons of his own, the other a brutal IRA executioner, too closely connected to her past. She is forced to return to Belfast to testify at a murder trial. But she faces an impossible choice – lie on the stand and allow a vindictive killer to run free, or tell the truth and place her children in the line of fire. With the lives of her family and thousands of innocent people at risk, Sarah must battle her fears, overcome betrayal, and find the courage to fight for the truth. But righting the wrongs of the past just might cost her everything. “Your career is a journey. It’s rare to find a person for whom it’s a direct line,” says social entrepreneur, CEO and Founder of Working for Women (https://www.workingforwomen.org/), Beth Bengtson. Indeed, Bengtson studied to be a photographer at the Fashion Institute of Technology and jumped into the early dot-com universe and even lived through the bust. After meeting her husband and starting a family, she “realized that business could be a force for social good” and took a position as VP of Social Responsibility—teaching that corporation “how to think about doing good and being a good citizen.” Laid off during the Great Recession, she decided to pursue the idea of social responsibility by creating W4W, a service that helps for-profit business invest resources in social initiatives that benefit women. Her leadership awakening happened when she was scouring the world for the perfect W4W CEO because “my definition of a leader is everything I wasn’t: charismatic, outgoing, with sales and business development,” she says. A coach to challenge her to lead. And the rest, as they say, is her-story.

Pam and Kel are both writing again so they thought it was time for a W4W mentoring session. After almost a year off writing Kel has decided to go back to her fiction novel and start from scratch. This time she joined a writing group and engaged a writing mentor as a support system but the first session was not at all what she expected. Meanwhile Pam has paused her novel to edit and remaster a book of old that she recently got the rights back for. Pam talks all about the rights return process and what it's like to be re-releasing her 2nd book, 7 years on. There are some important considerations for authors in this chat that people might find helpful, especially when it comes to publishing contracts and rights. Beth Bengtson, Founder/CEO Beth Bengtson is the Founder/CEO of the nonprofit Working for Women (W4W). She has more than 20 years of experience working with both marketing agencies and client side for Fortune 500 companies, small businesses and not-for-profits. Her focus has been to help organizations evolve through purpose-driven marketing, communications and business practices. She brings her enthusiasm for facilitating change, teaching, and her understanding of how to empower organizations to every engagement. In creating W4W, Beth combines two key passions: believing that businesses can play an important role in supporting their larger communities, and her dedication to women’s empowerment. W4W started out of her own frustration in running a business that sought to support organizations geared to creating opportunities for underserved women. She lacked time and staff to ensure that her company was supporting the right organizations in the right ways, and she imagined that other companies were facing the same predicament.

Hello lady listeners, how are you? Busy? We are! We still find the time tho to keep up with women in politics. In keeping with supporting the #metoo movement, we talk about the need to keep supporting women who are coming forth with their stories of sexual harassment and abuse. The COURAGE it takes to come forward!!! Please believe the women! Shout out Hillary Harvey's "The Voice" show here at Radio Kingston, she interviewed two local women who were arrested at the Brett Kavanaugh supreme court confirmation hearings. Our first guest, Beth Bengtson founded "Working for Women" in early 2018. W4W's mission is to support other nonprofits who help women enter or stay in the workforce. Beth's work to support women really began years earlier when she and her former business partner incorporated a 1% give back of their company's revenue to women's needs. Beth saw the bigger need of supporting women focused non-profits on a bigger scale and shares how she had to overcome her own self doubts about herself being the one to lead those efforts. She talks about dissecting the barriers that we put on ourselves and moving through the discomfort of becoming who you need to be in order to do the thing. One of the local organizations they partner with is Raising Hope here in Kingston, a mentoring program for women supporting women, but there are so many check out their website which is re-launching early October with a way for you to get engaged. Our second guest is the adorable Jem Violet. She is a trans singer-songwriter / performer here in the Hudson Valley. A quote from Jem's instagram: "Choosing to allow myself to be seen as trans - to be seen as who I am - has been the most difficult, meaningful, and joyful thing I have ever done. To all of those who are unable to be seen as they want right now: I believe in you and you have my solidarity and support." Jem shares about how being bullied as a child affected her and how it shapes her perception of herself and the world. When asked about the transition from boy to girl, she explains how her experience is bigger than being a female in a male body. Jem volunteers at the LGBTQ Center by facilitating a group for gender non-conforming and queer teens and guides them to understand that they are the absolute authority on their own person and that no one can take away their truth. For self-care we get two special guests, Beetle and Freedom Walker, co-hosts of The Black Meta on Radio Kingston. This month's writing episode was inspired by Pamela Cook's blogpost on making the decision to switch genre. Pam talks about making the shift out of rural romance and into commercial women's fiction for her latest book and explores what it's like to be working with an agent for the first time, pitching her book. All fired up, the ladies get political this episode, breaking down everything from "Cockygate" to the fraught realm of writing race. A new emerging author has joined the W4W ranks, Lauren Chater! Yay! Lauren will join Pam and Kel over the coming months to talk about writing and publishing her first novel, The Lace Weaver. To wrap it up, kid's author extraordinaire and Room to Read writer ambassador, Susanne Gervay, comes on to tell us all about the 2018 Room to Read World Change Challenge. This episode will require caffeine! So grab your favourite beverage and get ready to talk "Genre" on the Writes4Women podcast. Wishes For Warriors On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with a GIANT man--Bryan Marshall, founder of Wishes For Warriors. And I’m not kidding. His head his huge. He’s built like a tank. He walks sideways through doors… or perhaps, he just kicks them in. We also meet with his two amigos and wounded warriors, Corey Garmon and Cameron Stuart. We learn about his foundation, Wishes for Warriors, and how they’re making a difference in the lives of wounded veterans. These guys are solid. I’ve been known to complain, on occasion, about leg cramps, blisters, and chaffing… and I feel like it’s justified… until I meet someone like Corey Garmon. The dude is a triple amputee and he’s out hiking the hills and killing big bulls. These guys straight-up inspire. To learn more about Wishes For Warriors and how you can be a part of it, checkout our show notes on the Gritty Bowmen website.
