Writer's Book Club Podcast

In this episode, Pamela Cook takes us through the process behind writing her novel All We Dream. We talked about the differences between traditional and independent publishing and Pam gave some fabulous tips on things like cover design and advertising and marketing. Pam also, very generously, ran through some of the before and after changes to the novel between its two editions and how those changes improved the novel. I was also really keen to talk to Pam about two writing craft aspects she is really knowledgeable about and actually teaches to other writers - how to write in deep point of view and how to, as she calls it, turn up the tension in your writing to keep your readers turning the page. We also discussed the importance of visiting the place you're writing about if possible and how she works with her agent. You'll find links to buy both paperback and ebook versions of All We Dream here.ABOUT PAMELA COOKPamela Cook is an author, podcaster, writing teacher and mentor. Her best-selling debut novel Blackwattle Lake (2012) was published by Hachette Australia in 2012 followed by three rural fiction titles. Her latest releases Cross My Heart (2019) and All We Dream (2020) have taken her writing in an exciting new direction.Pamela writes page-turning contemporary women's fiction, delving deep into the psychology of her characters and the complexity of relationships in all their forms. She explores the impact of trauma, grief and generational conflict, drawing on the resilience and courage she finds in inspirational women. Her writing is imbued with a deep love of the natural world and its power to heal. Producing and hosting Writes4Women, a weekly podcast that supports women writers and celebrates women's writing, is one of Pamela's not-so-guilty pleasures. Abillion aims to change the way people eat and consume whether it be food or fashion or material objects in their lives. Their app not only helps people find plant-based food but also makes a real difference in the availability of that food, as abillion also seeks to encourage restaurants and hotels to become more plant-based. Think: TripAdvisor meets Instagram but for vegans and vegetarians. In 2017, Vikas left his high-flying corporate career at one of the world's largest hedgefunds to pursue this venture as he felt he could do more for society and realised that the world did not need another fund manager, but it needed people to solve interesting problems — and he has not looked back since. CFOTL: What are your priorities as a finance leader over the next 12 months? Freedman: Here at Room to Read, we've just launched our 2020–2025 strategic plan, of which one of the core parts is the continued build of our financial sustainability. I'm super excited and proud that we are launching a five-year, $10 million initiative—we're calling it a Future Fund—to which we're asking our donors to contribute. In addition to funding our day-to-day programs, we're looking to build out funds that will be unrestricted and allow us to get to six months' operating expense coverage, which is best-in-class. This would allow the organization to really build out its operational reserves to give us the wherewithal to weather ups and downs in the financial markets as well as to take some small risks with innovation to try some things out, test some things—to learn quickly and, if necessary, to fail quickly, as our board says—and to then adapt. Having those extra months of operating coverage will really make a difference for us. My own organization has a leadership role in this, in partnership with the development team. We'll be talking to donors and working with all sorts of organizations to describe the need for having that kind of operating expense coverage to give us real sustainability for our future.

As a former Chapter Leader for Room to Read, Adriane Herrick Juarez saw firsthand the important impact that Room to Read has had developing 20,000 libraries and literacy-partnerships around the world and positively affecting the lives of over 11.6 million children through primary school literacy programs  and secondary school girls’ education efforts. In this interview with Dr. Geetha Murali, new CEO of Room to Read as of January 2018, we take a global look at Room to Read’s model of deep, systemic transformation in low-income countries as they implement their vision that states, “World Change Starts with Educated Children.” Through Geetha’s insights, we gain knowledge about what it takes to optimize organizational reach and impact with a laser-focus on an organization’s technical portfolio. This includes investing in proven solutions that address challenges for the long-term – while collaborating with communities, partners, and governments – something that all libraries must do. Come with us on an inspiring world-journey as we learn how to formulate and communicate strong, measurable results – moving beyond passion with hard work and best practices to create transformative change.

It's a new game and I'm not sure how prepared we all are. Second question revolved around RFPs for Digital Marketing agencies. Do you think when a Request For Proposal is made that both the client and the agency are well-educated enough to make the right choice, or is there an underlying knowledge to Digital Marketing that is hard to bring across in this type of process? Lots of big questions - lots of stuff to talk about. Enjoy this conversation... Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast - Episode #68 - Host: Mitch Joel. Running time: 53:03.
