A lot of people mistake “tax-deferred” for “tax-free.” This can be beneficial in the short term, but can ultimately leave you owing more on higher balances at higher rates. But what if, in some cases, the best course of action is to take advantage of the low tax rates available right now, so you can grow your money 100% for you - and not Uncle Sam - for the rest of your life? My guest, Ed Slott, makes the case for this in his new book, The New Retirement Savings Time Bomb: How to Take Financial Control, Avoid Unnecessary Taxes, and Combat the Latest Threats to Your Retirement Savings. He’s created an easy-to-follow plan that helps you place your assets to avoid traps and keep your hard-earned money, no matter what.  As a CPA for over 40 years, Ed is uniquely qualified to tackle this problem. He knows the ins and outs of IRAs better than just about anyone and works tirelessly to help people put more of their hard-earned dollars back in their pocket. At his Elite IRA Advisor Group (of which I am one), he trains a select team of 450 advisors to turn his research into practice for their clients. Today, Ed returns to the podcast to talk about the benefits of paying taxes at the record lows we’re experiencing right now, how tax-deferred assets can hurt us when we’re most vulnerable if we’re not careful, and how laws passed in the wake of  COVID-19 may affect your retirement planning for years or decades to come.  In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:  Why Ed believes that typical accountants and tax preparers are history teachers - and working with them does nothing but show you what you could or should have done. Why so many accountants are short-changing their clients by recommending they choose tax-deferred assets. Why Ed’s traditional IRA has a balance of $0 - and how this will protect him from a massive tax bill, as well as Medicare costs, later in life. The reason so many people aren’t actually in a lower tax bracket in retirement. How the SECURE Act has created huge risks in long-term and legacy planning - and why you may now need to update your trusts. The biggest mistake that people make in leaving money to the next generation. Why life insurance can provide a better benefit to families than an IRA. Why so few people are familiar with Qualified Charitable Distributions - and how they can offer huge value in tax preparation. What makes the health savings account the deal of the century. Congress just passed the biggest stimulus bill of our lifetime. The CARES ["Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security] Act is a massive bill of all bills, totaling in the trillions of dollars, and it’s going to have significant impacts on us as business owners and individuals as we work together to get through this tough time.  Today, I want to address the big questions you may have about the bill: how will it affect your retirement, and what’s in there for you as an individual?  To help you make sense of the chaos, weed through the noise, and take advantage of what the government is doing to prop up the economy, I’m thrilled to bring back my good friend and mentor Ed Slott, President of Ed Slott and Company. Ed is one of the best sources for IRA advice, someone I’ve known for over a decade, and a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal.  In this emergency episode of Your Wealth & Beyond, we dig into how the CARES act will affect your 401(k) and IRAs, the updated rules concerning deadlines, contributions, and required minimum distributions, and the potential issues you and your financial advisor should discuss in the weeks and months to come. In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:  What you can do with the fact that required minimum distributions have been waived for 2020 - and strategies you can use if you already took your required minimum distributions for this year.  Why Ed hopes no one uses the relief provisions allowing people to take early distributions “penalty-free” from retirement plans or IRAs.  What the extended filing and payment date of July 15 means for paying your taxes and making contributions to your ROTH IRA, IRA and Health Savings Account, as well as the messy twist that individuals who pay estimated taxes need to be aware of.  Why health savings accounts still offer the opportunity to break even on taxes right now.  Why you may want to take advantage of qualified charitable distributions even though there are no RMDs this year to bring down your overall

Ed McLaughlin is the President of Operations and Technology at Mastercard, where he has worked for the past 14 years. In his current role Ed oversees all of Mastercard’s technology functions including the global network, processing platforms, information security, and technology operations. As Ed points out, working in technology doesn’t mean he is sitting in a cubicle coding all day. Work in technology is very much a people centered role. “I think technology has always been people at its heart. What really matters is who are the people, and how well we use the stuff, how good we're at it, and how much we understand what all of that's for. Technology is always for a purpose, and it's people that give it that purpose. Yeah, I spend a lot of time. I still code every once in a while, but it's not the work of doing it, it's really working together to create the value that is. I think just about everything we do is either done through or with technology these days. It's just really how we make things, how humans work together.” When it comes to the doom and gloom talk about AI and automation, Ed says he is “profoundly optimistic” He believes that these advances in technology have the potential to free humans up to do the things they actually want to do. He says, “When I hear talk of a jobless future, I just think it's just a lack of imagination. I mean, when I think of all the things I wish we could be doing if we could have more resources freed up, my lists have lists.” Mastercard is actually harnessing AI inside of the organization in order to flag fraudulent activity for customers, to help employees collaborate effectively, and to make it possible for employees to continuously learn and grow. One tool they use is called Safety Net, which monitors all transactions in real time and looks for fraudulent behaviors. It helps protect the company from the 200 fraud attempts that happen every minute, which would nearly impossible to do with just human employees. Another program they have in place is called NuDetect, which can detect if someone is trying to sign into a customer account using a stolen identity. The AI looks at behaviors such as what height the phone is at when signing in, the way the person types, whether they are sitting or standing, etc…. With all of the new technological advances and the fast rate of change in today’s world of work, how are companies supposed to keep up? Ed says it is important to stay constantly curious and don’t get stuck doing things as they have always been done before just because change is hard. “I do think, and this is hard, you need to have an enthusiasm for what's new, not to be fashionable, not for fashion's sake, but to always be questioning. I think it's a skeptical enthusiasm of, "If a new capability is there, does it allow me to do what I want to do better?" I think as long as you're centered on what you're trying to do, then all the new capabilities I find just profoundly exciting.” What you will learn: How to create great digital experiences for employees Why Ed is optimistic about AI and automation A look at some cool AI programs Mastercard has created such as NuDetect and SafetyNet How Mastercard upskills and retrains their employees What the office space is like at Mastercard How they are keeping up with the pace of change How to balance information and data with privacy and security

Episode 9 - Do We Know How Many Miles an Award Ticket is Going to Cost? "It's exciting times in the world of miles and points...but I'm not terribly excited...more so nervous as a cat in a room of rocking chairs..."In this world of made up currencies where the points don't matter, there have typically been published award charts, especially for airlines. This meant that there'd be standard rates for how many miles it would cost to go from A to B. Planning a trip, you'd have (in theory) a specific goal for how many miles and points it would take to fly in the cabin of your choice. Now? That's not so much the case. Ed Calderon interview This interview with Ed went to a place that not many of the conversations on this podcast have gone. Because of his time operating in the darkness of Mexico Ed is now enabled to teach the innocent and the protectors of the light how to not only survive but thrive in high threat environments. This interview got dark as we talked about techniques, tactics, principles, trends and patterns used by cartels, criminals, human traffickers and Drug lords South of the border and also within the United States of America. For over a decade Ed Calderon worked in the fields of counter narcotics, organized crime investigation, and public safety in the northern-border region of Mexico. During this period, he also coordinated and worked executive protection details for high-level government officials and visiting dignitaries — often in some of the most dangerous parts of the country. Just to give you some perspective on the human trafficking academic south of the border, here are some numbers published by the Latin Times, Mexico experienced a 245-percent increase in kidnapping between 2003 and 2013. To put hard numbers on that, in 2003, an average of 34 people were released from kidnaps each month. In 2009, that number was up to 96 per month. By 2013 it was 1,162 per month. During this interview Ed fills us in on cartel techniques, tactics and patterns while also helping us understand how to make ourselves and our loved one’s harder targets during our everyday lives.
