In this episode, I had the pleasure of having Amie Mcnee. You may recognize her from her posts with bold hand-written signs on art & creativity, her substack, The Unpublished podcast she hosts with her partner James, and her books - she is a creative coach, writer, author - and I absolutely love her honesty, the sharpness of her words and the fierceness in her encouragement to MAKE ART... We talked about:The mess that comes from saying yes to creation. Why Art is NOT just for children.Failure and how to digest itCreating as an act of liberation, collective change, and personal healing. INVITATIONS: From Amie:
Have you considered that art has the capacity to turn you on? Given most of us have a childhood hangup related to our artistic ability, and have been exposed to stereotypes about the mental health of artists and the sustainability of artistic endeavours, a positive and empowering link between art and turn on appears to be tenuous! But that's about to change! My guest, Gemma Donnellan, is an entrepreneur, professional artist, art curator, and creative coach. She joins me to discuss how art and creativity are interconnected, how she's disrupting the art industry with a unique approach to making art accessible, and the role art plays in sparking creativity and sensuality. Tune in to hear Gemma share practical advice on incorporating art into your life and explain why she's so passionate about supporting artists. You'll also hear us talk about: Why Art and creativity are a turn on The impact of your environment and art on your creativity How to value and appreciate art How to support artists and acquire original artworks Practical advice for incorporating art into your life You can connect with Gemma via: Linked in Facebook Instagram Website
I'm really excited to share a conversation I had with Ariana Ross, a certified sommelier and the author of the book: Wine's Way To Art: A Treatise on Wine as Art and Why Art is Something We Need to Be Human. It is such a pleasure to talk with Ariana because she has the unusual ability to entertain ideas and argue a perspective without getting her ego involved. Conversation is a tool that she uses to hone her own thinking and to move further down the path in the pursuit of truth. Because of that I could talk to her for hours, so this discussion feels to me like just the beginning of a much bigger conversation. We delve into some pretty juicy topics including elitism in wine: how to separate that from expertise and acquired tastes and reverence, as well as questioning the idea of higher pleasures. We also ask whether it's appropriate to refer to wine as art, and what it means for wine to be approached as an art. Among many questions discussed and unanswered, we discuss the importance of the canon of wine (one n, not two, as in the prime examples and archetypes) and whether a canon exists for other types of wine besides the commonly understood European grape wine. We don't always agree, and that's the fun of it…Ariana allowed us to explore these perennially important ideas through her book, which seems extremely timely, and the result was a dynamic and candid exchange that has left me looking forward to the next conversation. @thesimplesomm https://whoisariana.com/ You Can Support this podcast by subscribing via patreon. According to Art Sobczak, cold-calling is dead. He has a better way: Smart-calling. A “smart” call is calling people that you know something about and you have customized, tailored, and personalized a message so it's relevant to them. This leads to a better chance of engaging with them and moving them to a conversation. Smart-calling is still relevant. It sets you apart from digital messages, which are often ignored. According to Dr. Arthur Laffer, since 1913, when the United States first imposed the income tax via constitutional amendment, the top rate of that tax has determined the fate of the American economy. When the top rate has been high, as in the late 1910s, the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and 1970s, the response of those with money and capital has been to curtail real economic activity in favor of protecting assets and income streams. Huge declines have come to the economy in these circumstances. On today's podcast, ARK CEO, CIO and Founder Cathie Wood is again joined by Dr. Arthur Laffer, a famed economist, well-known for his creation of “The Laffer Curve,” so Dr. Laffer and Cathie can discuss Laffer's book, Taxes Have Consequences, in which Dr. Laffer provides a history of taxes and their impact on the United States economy. Dr. Laffer explains why he believes that a low rate broad-based flat tax, spending restraint, sound money, minimal regulations, and free trade are the answers to most of our economic problems. “Low rate broad-based flat tax, spending restraint, sound money, minimal regulations, and free trade, and then get the hell out of the way and let markets solve it.” — Arthur Laffer Key Points From This Episode: An overview of Arthur Laffer's new book, Taxes Have Consequences. How the government finances taxation. A history of income tax since 1913. Defining characteristics of the Roaring Twenties. The market collapse that occurred in 1929. Similarities between the environment in 1929 and today. How Art would structure the American tax system if he could. Why stimulus spending hurts the economy. Art's thoughts on regulation. Why Art is a strong proponent of developing free trade agreements with countries that the US currently has issues with. What makes America different from the rest of the world. The correlation between tax hikes and economic performance. Why everyone benefits in a low rate broad-based flat tax system. The role of taxes in the Great Depression. Factors that Art attributes the high inflation levels to. The importance of acting fast when it comes to changing policies around taxes. How the pandemic has accelerated the migration to low tax states. Interesting statistics about states like Texas, Florida and Tennessee. Art's thoughts on how to address poverty in the United States.

What is the nature of the artist's vocation? And how exactly does art convey meaning? What might it mean for Christians to be artists? Such questions are commonplace when it comes to faith and art. It's also questions like these that have shaped the thought and career of writer, philosopher and teacher Dr Adrienne Dengerink-Chaplin. Dr Chaplin was in New Zealand earlier this year on a teaching and speaking tour, which included the Venn Conversation Evening, “Why Art and Artists Matter”. The next day, we were fortunate enough to get some time in the studio with her to continue the conversation. In this special one-off episode of Venn Presents, Sam Bloore talks with Adrienne about how she came to be fascinated with art and about exactly how art conveys meaning. Their lively and wide-ranging conversation delves into some of the thorny questions of faith and art: on how the gospel can shape art practice, on art and Christian witness, and on the attitude of churches to artists. Adrienne offers a refreshingly grounded take on things. At its best, art is not an exceptional calling but simply a distinct out working of the human vocation: it can, as she puts it, be “honest labour”.Whether you're an artist yourself, a keen gallery goer, or just someone who loves thoughtful chat, you'll love this episode.

Because when somebody who is terminally ill or passes, they have to rely on other people to do things on their behalf. And, I looked at it and I said, ‘Technology can do that better, and securely, and privately, and in a much smarter manner than traditionally passing out CD Roms and stuff like that.” (07:09) (Art)“Our company's core business is anything you want to be able to be delivered to your loved one now or in the future, this is the technology that you're gonna trust.” (12:07) (Art)“We have seen countries and islands that I had never heard of that have our technology. So, it's kinda cool in that sense that just out of Chicago a company that started with a true passion to make a difference is gaining acceptance globally.” (17:38) (Art)“Smart cards eliminate knowing the future date. You don't have that concern. You give [your message] to us and it's our promise to deliver. That evolution is so important because so many people want to do things in the future and the future is uncertain. So, you've got to be there for the wedding day in order to be there to deliver your message. We don't ask for that. You tell us who's getting married and that's pretty much it. The responsibility is ours. The idea is peace of mind that a company will look after that and deliver.” (26:45) (Art)“So we created a technology where you can do all your digital assets, your wishes, your important documents that you want to pass down - this is your birth certificate - all that type of stuff in one place.” (31:38) (Art)“Advice I would tell [other SaaS founders] is trust your instinct, number one. It's very important because people will give you a lot of ideas. Listen to the ideas, but do what your instinct tells you. In the end if that fails you, it's ok. Failing is just the first attempt
Should Instagram Get to Censor Art? Whether we like it or not, they are. Their guidelines explicitly allow for real world art that depicts sexual content. Some artists are being banned completely. A good example: The Little Black Gallery in London had their entire account deleted for a congratulatory post that had a silhouette image of a woman. Artists need a platform to be seen. I ran into an issue when I tried to promote my watercolor class Go Figure. This course will help you paint realistic and natural human figure, and my very non-explicit image was considered too explicit for Instagram. Click here for access to my Go Figure class. Why Art is Now Boring Do you like art that's interesting, pushing boundaries or boring vanilla art? I know you all want interesting art. So why has art become boring? Journalist, Michelle Goldberg wrote about the new book by W. David Marx Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change Goldberg shares that the book highlights how we use art and fashion to demonstrate our social status, but the author no longer thinks it's no longer working. Why? Several reasons but one of the biggest is the ability we have to fake our “image” with filters or by photoshopping ourselves next to a private plane. The Dark Side of Matisse The Red Studio Exhibit shows the famous Matisse painting of his studio. The exhibit pulls out each piece of art and other things in the room. It's made me aware of a backstory that I didn't know until now. The nude painting depicted is likely that of Matisse's daughter who would have been 16 or 17 at the time. It makes me see this in a new light. What do you think? Join the conversation and let me know what you think on Instagram. Big Eyes: The Art of Margaret Keane Margaret D. H. Keane (born Peggy Doris Hawkins, September 15, 1927 – June 26, 2022) was an American artist known for her paintings of subjects with big eyes. She mainly painted women, children, or animals in oil or mixed media. Her husband was originally credited for her work, but she claimed ownership after they divorced. They had to have a “paint off” in court so she could prove it was her work! A resurgence of interest in Margaret Keane's work followed the release of Tim Burton's 2014 biopic Big Eyes which I highly recommend. If you are struggling to gain recognition for your work, I've got you. Check out podcast episode 170, Top Insider Publicity Secrets with Senior Media Coach Lynya Floyd Art World News Weekend Edition It's been a busy week. We've covered censorship on Instagram. Additionally, we found out that art is now boring from author W. David Marx. I'm still checking out your comments about the ethics of Matisse's painting of his daughter. Lastly, I loved sharing Margaret Keane's story about her art, her fight to claim her own work, and why her method of painting eyes came about. Until next time, stay inspired.

It's said that 10-20% of all medical diagnoses are wrong. That's a bit scary, but it's not surprising. Medical diagnostics is inherently complex, the medical literature is always expanding, and doctors, like all humans, grapple with availability bias – they diagnose diseases they know instead of diseases they don't. Diagnostic accuracy is clearly a problem. Today's guest is Art Papier, MD. Art is the co-founder and CEO of VisualDx. According to Art, there are common diseases and rare diseases, and there are common presentations and rare presentations. The bulk of diagnostic errors are made on common diseases with rare presentations. The goal of VisualDx, a clinical decision support system, is to “augment the brain” of physicians and help them make better diagnoses at the point of care. On this episode, you'll learn: The importance of being crystal clear on why you exist as a company. What problem are you trying to solve? Why and how most diagnosis errors occur with common diseases. Why physicians need a guidance system (and why that's not Google). Why diagnosis is NOT “big data”. What's the ETTO principle – Efficiency Thoroughness Trade-Off and how clinical decision support systems can help. Why it's so critical for startups and entrepreneurs to have doctors on their team. Why Art favors pull technologies over push technologies when serving doctors. And the problems you have to overcome as a result of using them. Why machine learning (ML) is a great way to augment the brain, but will likely never be the full solution. How machine learning can be effectively applied to very good data (i.e. 20 years worth). Why labeling and terminology are so critical to any successful machine learning application. Why general artificial intelligence is a fool's game and how to stand out with niche and nuance. How VisualDx is sharing it's 20 years of imaging with consumers and combining it with machine learning to help them better understand common skin conditions with Aysa. How Apple CoreML allows Aysa to apply machine learning algorithms to consumer images without ever moving the picture off of the consumer's device. "Why Art?" by Eleanor Davis is a meditation on what art means for the artist and for society. This surreal story isn’t one that can be easily pinned down, but it is complex and insightful, and Jess, Jam, Jeff, and kgros will spend some time unpacking it with you. Read it, listen in, and decide if you want it on YOUR fantasy football curriculum vitae. Music by Sleuth. Comics are the closest thing to the experience of remembering. "The Complete Persepolis" is Marjane Satrapi’s memoir of growing up in Iran, living through the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War, moving to Europe alone at fourteen, and returning home to a country she barely recognized. It’s one of the best comics ever made, and now you can listen to the TradeWaiters gush about it for an hour. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on "Why Art?" by Eleanor Davis.
Listen in as Farley and Jennifer discuss the idea of “Why Art?” from Makoto Fujimura’s book Refractions with fellow art team members Skye Young and Leah Westberry. They explore the idea of why art is important to society, individuals and the church. Podcast edited by Cameron Troy. Intro and Outro music by Abram Dean. They begin with Eleanor Davis's Why Art? (Fantagraphics Books). Going into this reading, the guys thought that the book might be more on the expository or critical side. However, they quickly discovered Davis's unique approach in combining humor, storytelling, and aesthetic analysis. After that they check out the first issue of Infidel (Image Comics), written by Pornsak Pichetshote and with art by Aaron Campbell. This is a curious combination of horror and the dynamics of intolerance, and the first issue raises a variety of questions that start off the series with good story momentum. The Two Guys with PhDs conclude with another horror title, Greg and Megan Smallwood's Vampironica #1. Although in the tradition of Archie Comics' other recent horror titles, this first issue doesn't have the same impact on the guys as did Afterlife with Archie or The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Still, the art and premise are an attention-grabbing setup.

One Law to bring them all and in the darkness bind them… Yes, it’s time for the final and most crucial Law of Power: Assume Formlessness. Law 48 is all about how to move beyond mechanical repetition of the individual Laws and become a virtuoso performer who flows effortlessly with the needs of the moment, untroubled by countervailing winds. As Robert drives home, nothing can be relied on except the inevitability of change – if we are rigid and unprepared for it, then we will simply shatter. All of life is a battle between order and chaos, but everything interesting happens in the tension between them. Law 48 puts that tension and those moments under the microscope. This week we explore the deep archetypes of human nature that can be seen everywhere from ancient philosophies to comic superheroes; we explain why empires fall and what truly makes a great leader; and why bureaucrats can be so powerful while seeming to be the antithesis of this Law. We also fantasise about their deaths. There are tools and techniques to guide you into formlessness, and we explore the ways psychedelics can remind us of and re-invigorate flow-states; the crucial difference between powerful formlessness and passive ‘going with the flow’; and we reveal how to defeat someone else who’s assumed formlessness. Dre also decides to unleash his Grand Theory of Art on us (Jon disagrees with it); we fuck up trying to understand music theory; and celebrate those who can tell jokes minutes after terrorist attacks. This episode marks the completion of the first step in a much longer journey of social and self-exploration… Tune in next week as we begin the next, even more powerful stage of our evolution. This Episode Includes: The Jiujitsu of Power Why Sparta – despite all the rippling abs – ultimately fell Using soft power to quietly get what you want How to bring guerrilla warfare into everyday life Surprising benefits of a bad memory Being formless without losing your inner compass Why Art dies Mentioned in the Episode: Robert’s other book, Mastery Our very own The 48 Laws in Practice, available from the publisher and from Amazon Our awesome Bismarck t-shirt, with him literally surfing the current of events The mind-bendingly brilliant Rick and Morty Chris Ryan’s podcast, Tangentially Speaking The podcast phenomenon, S-Town The bitchy classic, Mean Girls Controversial comedian, Frankie Boyle The book and the filmof Fight Club STUFF ABOUT INDIAN MUSIC SCALES ETC Bobby McFerrin Demonstrates the Power of the Pentatonic Scale James Carse's Finite and Infinite Games Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. Join us as we continue our 48 Laws of Power review, exploring Robert Greene’s provocative and compelling book, in which he lays bare the history, practice, psychology, and philosophies of power that ultimately shape all human relations. Often seen as a handbook for the ‘modern Machiavelli’, we take a closer look, beyond the hyperbole, and discuss how understanding and implementing these Laws can actually enrich your life personally, professionally and spiritually. Jon and Dre aim to get to the heart of each of the Laws, grapple with their sometimes disturbingly amoral nature, and discuss what the Laws mean in everyday life (often revealing their own experiences – good and bad – when they’ve either observed or transgressed them).
