On this episode we're joined by two renowned birding enthusiasts to tell the story and help unwrap the mystery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis).  Chuck Hunter is retired from the USFWS and spent his career working on endangered and threatened, at-risk, and other species of conservation concern throughout the Southeast Region.  Bobby Harrison, a noted birding expert has quite a history with the Ivory-billed. He frequently goes on searching expeditions, has reported several sightings and tells us about an encounter. The Ivory-billed Woodpecker is a complicated story, wrought with equal doses of doubt and hope, but it's one worth hearing. Who knows, maybe someone has seen one while hunting and this podcast will help the scientists. On this episode we're joined by two experts, John Doresky and Will McDearman, to explain the story of the Red-cockaded Woodpecker.  John is the current USFWS Recovery Coordinator and Will, now retired, was the previous coordinator.  Both men have spent most of their careers studying these birds and have interesting information to share. The RCW is a small woodpecker that used to be abundant in the longleaf pine ecosystems, but has had challenges as most of their habitat has changed. The story of how man-made cavities have helped save the birds is a really good one. You'll never look at woodpeckers the same after listening. In this episode of Wild Bird Acoustics, I will present two sound magazines for listener's to enjoy. The first of these deals with one on my favourite species here in Sweden, the European Green Woodpecker. This is a shy, rather retiring bird and they can be difficult to field record as a result. Over the course of 2025 I employed passive recorders with great success in order to get up close and personal with these wonderful birds. The result of this project was some wonderful intimate audio of the species and I have been able to put together a dedicated sound magazine on Green Woodpecker, as a direct result.In the latter half of the episode, I will transport listener's to the Västerbotten coastline in Northern Sweden. Over the course of two weeks there in late September I set myself the task of securing high quality audio of the various owl species present on the tiny island of Hällögern. This proved a rather special experience. Our guest this week is Mark Kerstens, a PhD student at OSU, who studies black-backed woodpeckers with the hope of improving forest management before and after wildfires. Black-backed woodpeckers are ecosystem engineers, creating habitat for many other forest-dwelling species, and Mark's work is helping to inform natural resource managers about what these charasmatic birds may be doing.

While most woodpeckers carve out cavities in dead trees for their nests, the red-cockaded woodpecker prefers to use the living pine trees of the southern United States. The woodpecker always chooses one of these living southern pines that is over 60 years old. While these pines can live 200 years or more, usually at about age 60, a fungus infection begins to rot away the heartwood at the center of the tree.Over months or even sometimes years, the woodpecker works his way through the living tissue to the hollow center where he will build his nest. The nest cavity is always above the level of shrub growth in order to provide a safe haven from any forest fires.In addition, surrounding foliage can give the gray rat snake access to the nest. These snakes, natural enemies of the woodpecker, can also climb pine trees. But the snake does not like the gummy resin of the pine tree. In fact, snakes that encounter the resin will begin to writhe and fall to the ground. So to make sure that its home is absolutely safe, the woodpecker drills a series of holes around the hole leading to its nest. The holes are kept open so that the nest hole is always protected by the resin.The red‑cockaded woodpecker carefully selects a site for its home in order to be safe from both fire and a natural predator—using the natural chemistry of the tree to aid its survival. A century of logging and fire control has taken its toll on the mature pine forests of the West, the preferred nest site for this Lewis's Woodpecker. But there is hope. Lewis's Woodpeckers also nest along rivers in large cottonwoods, trees of little value for timber. If you've heard the hammering of a woodpecker in the woods, you might have wondered how the birds can be so forceful. What does it take to whack your head against a tree repeatedly, hard enough to drill a hole? A team of researchers wondered that too and set out to investigate, by putting tiny muscle monitors on eight downy woodpeckers and recording them with high-speed video as they pecked away in the lab.Integrative organismal biologist Nick Antonson, co-author of a report on the work, joins Host Flora Lichtmen to peck away at the mystery.Plus, you can take two ant eggs with the exact same genes, and one can grow up to be a queen, the other a worker.
