Everyone loves woodpeckers, and the Red-headed Woodpecker is one of the coolest! Listen to what makes this bird unique, like hiding grasshoppers in trees to eat later (while they are still alive.) RJ also tells some paddleboarding mishaps, and talks about some molting mallards that he saw recently. Join RJ, Amanda, John, and Shannon this week to talk about the Red-headed Woodpecker! Eric G dives into the current housing crisis, and let me tell you, it's a doozy. With the Trump administration stepping in, we're all left wondering what that even means for us homeowners. Is there actually a plan here or are we just watching a circus unfold? Eric breaks down the absurdity of the state and local regulations that are driving up housing costs. Urban growth boundaries? More like urban growth nightmares! Imagine owning a chunk of land you can't build on just because it's not on some arbitrary line drawn by the government. Classic. It's a tug-of-war between skyrocketing land prices and the desperate need for affordable housing. Spoiler alert: it's not looking good. Eric digs into the crazy fees associated with building, like $70,000 just to get a house on the market. Who knew permits could cost more than my first car? Then we get into lumber prices, and wow, hold onto your hard hats. With tariffs on Canadian lumber, prices are on the rise and it's making everything feel like a bad joke. Eric shares some wild stats about how framing lumber is up nearly 20% year-over-year. That's right, folks, lumber is now a luxury item. But wait, there's more! The prices of gypsum board are through the roof too—$20 a sheet! Seriously, do we have to start trading in gold now? Eric's sarcastic take on the absurdities of the construction industry keeps it light as we navigate through these serious issues. He wraps it up with a call to action about the importance of trade education in schools because apparently, we're not allowed to learn how to build things anymore. What a wild ride!Takeaways: The Federal Government is stepping in on the housing emergency, but don't hold your breath waiting for miraculous solutions. Local zoning laws and urban growth boundaries are driving housing prices through the roof, making it almost a joke. Tariffs on Canadian lumber are raising costs, so good luck finding affordable wood for your next project. Eric shares his personal home improvement woes, like battling a persistent woodpecker—because who doesn't love a good DIY disaster story? The housing crisis is the worst it's been in decades, and Eric discusses why a single federal solution isn't likely to happen any time soon. Eric's deep dive into the absurdities of permit fees shows just how much red tape can screw up home building. Some things don't want to be seen… but they still show up. In a flicker of motion at the edge of a stairwell. In the sound of knuckles tapping from inside the walls. In a face that looks familiar—until it doesn't. You tell yourself it's nothing. A draft. A dream. Old wiring. But what if it isn't? What if that shadow you all saw wasn't a trick of the light? What if the alarm that won't stop isn't broken—but trying to warn you? Tonight, the stories are quiet, but they don't stay that way. They reach. They follow. They watch. Engineering often builds systems to withstand extreme forces. Nature's ecosystems build interconnected systems that never experience them through geometric redirection.Woodpeckers don't have super-strong skulls that absorb 1,200 G-forces—they instead have interconnected geometric features that fragment and redirect energy, so the brain never experiences the full impact. Alain Bujold, a visionary R&D expert with 27 years of experience leading over 140 projects and holding 18 patents, reveals how ecosystemic thinking transforms protection. Unexpected Paradigm Shifts:→ Ecosystemic Energy Management: Nature doesn't isolate protection—bone, geometry, and material work as an interconnected ecosystem to redirect forces→ Energy Redirection Over Absorption: Natural ecosystems fragment and redirect kinetic energy through surface geometry—never experience the full force→ Systems Within Systems: Alain's "local and global" R&D methodology mirrors nature's approach—component details + ecosystem-wide performance→ Shape + Resonance = Protection: Surface geometry controls wave behavior across protective ecosystemsEconomic Reality: 2 million TBI cases annually in the US, 400,000 children hospitalized. Military load-carriage injuries cost billions. The Innovation: Woodpecker-inspired helmet geometry that fragments and redirects impact energy through controlled surface patterns—moving beyond material strength to force redirection through shape alone.Opportunity: Ecosystemic energy redirection could revolutionize aerospace (spacecraft hulls that redirect debris impacts), architecture (buildings that redirect earthquake forces), and automotive (crumple zones across vehicle ecosystems).Getting There: Stop asking "How do we build stronger materials?" Start by asking: "How can we design ecosystemic geometry where interconnected elements ensure our system never experiences the full destructive force?"#EcosystemicFutures #Biomimicry #EnergyRedirection #GeometricDesignGuest: Alain Bujold, R&D Innovation Strategist | 27 Years, 140+ Projects, 18 PatentsHost: Dyan Finkhousen, CEO, Shoshin WorksSeries Hosts: Vikram Shyam, Lead Futurist, NASA Glenn Research Center Dyan Finkhousen, Founder & CEO, Shoshin WorksEcosystemic Futures is provided by NASA Convergent Aeronautics Solutions Project in collaboration with Shoshin Works

After a long unexpected hiatus, SnapSessions! presents Episode 60, featuring an interview with Grammy-nominated guitarist Alex de Grassi and a SnapSessions! tribute to San Francisco Giants star centerfielder, Willie Mays—"the Say Hey Kid”, just maybe the greatest baseball player of all time. Alex de Grassi has been a guitarist since his early teens, growing up in a musical family in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1950s and 60s. Dropping the trumpet for the guitar after being exposed to the Beatles, the Stones and Mississippi John Hurt, de Grassi attended UC Berkeley in the early/middle 70s and took a lot of music theory along with his Economic Geography major. This led to classical guitar as well as ongoing labors as a street musician from Berkeley and SF to London, and then finally a connection with Windham Hill records and to his first album, Slow Circle, which came out in 1979. Since then, Alex has released a total of 16 albums dabbling in a variety of styles from Southern soul to Bolivian folk music to classical lullabies to the Woody the Woodpecker theme. In 1998 he was nominated for a Grammy for his album Water Garden. In addition, we talk to Alex about working with neuroscientist Daniel Levitin on his “Your Brain on Music” series, musing on the possible existence of a music gene. There's also an appreciative nod to some recent work he's done with the Real Sarahs. And we find out just how many guitars Alex de Grassi actually owns. SnapSessions! also pays tribute to the NY & SF Giants' great center fielder Willie Mays who died at the end of last summer. We cover Mays' great career, his extraordinary feats as an outfielder and hitter, and offer Doug's personal experiences of seeing Willie play both in Seals Stadium and at Candlestick Park. In addition, we've uncovered some outstanding recorded highlights as well as a musical gem saluting Willie Mays from the 1950s. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
