This week on The Lisa Burke Show, a powerhouse panel of experts explored Europe's precarious position in the new space race, urging urgent action to reclaim leadership through innovation, unity, and sovereign ambition. We began this week's episode of The Lisa Burke Show with Sasha Kehoe's round-up of global news. From the diplomatic unease surrounding Donald Trump's controversial allegations against South Africa, to critical updates on humanitarian aid delays in Gaza and Luxembourg's shifting pension policies. The segment also touched on CargoLux's heartwarming mission rescuing two brown bears, and the growing geopolitical stature of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni internationally.  Europe's place in the Space Economy François Leproux has just published his second book on space: 'La nouvelle conquête spatiale: quelle place pour l'Europe face au NewSpace?', and he brought a passionate perspective on why Europe must reclaim ambition in crewed spaceflight. A space engineer and author, François is building on his first book about the Hermes shuttle. He believes that Europe has the technical foundation, through Ariane rockets, industrial expertise, and past collaborations on the ISS, to lead independently. Yet without a sovereign crewed space program, François warns that Europe risks becoming irrelevant in the geopolitical narrative of space exploration. His call is urgent: invest in autonomy, unify internally, and inspire a new generation with human-led missions. Joining us online from Paris, Aurélie Bressollette, CEO of Latitude, offered a commercial lens on the space economy. With a formidable background at Airbus, OHB, and Redwire, Aurélie now leads a company pioneering dedicated satellite launch services. She debunked the myth of cost-per-kilo dominance by SpaceX, advocating instead for an ‘Uber-to-the-stars' solution that prioritises mission specificity over brute launch mass. Her view: Europe's competitive edge lies not just in technology, but in agility, customer responsiveness, and institutional backing that can support nimble NewSpace players. With strategic orbits like sun-synchronous within reach, her optimism is grounded in engineering reality. Dr. Laetitia Cesari completed our stellar panel with her legal and policy insight into outer space governance. A practitioner and researcher with expertise in cybersecurity, in-orbit servicing, and the upcoming EU Space Act, Laetitia emphasised the complexity of coordinating Europe's multi-layered space apparatus. ESA, the EU, and national agencies must align more efficiently, she said, if Europe is to compete with faster-moving powers. Defense, though historically out of ESA's remit, is now tightly interwoven with space policy, as satellites become essential for secure communication and surveillance. Laetitia's insights highlighted how law and policy are not just supporting acts, but mission-critical elements. Whether through political will, commercial innovation, or regulatory harmonisation, the message was clear: Europe has the tools and must now use them strategically. The ISS is nearing retirement, Artemis is Moon-bound, and commercial stations are on the horizon. If Europe doesn't step up, it risks becoming a subcontractor in a future it should be helping to lead. It's Monday, April 21st, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus New law criminalizes praying with someone about gender, sexuality identity On April 4, the Australian state of New South Wales began enforcing a new law criminalizing anti-conversion therapy, which now includes praying with someone about their gender or sexual identity and even encouraging abstinence for homosexual Christians, reports International Christian Concern. On the website “Anti-Discrimination New South Wales,” a government body that administers and investigates anti-discrimination, they note that “praying with or over a person with the intent to change or suppress their sexuality or gender identify is unlawful … even if that person has asked you to pray for them to be able to change or suppress their sexuality or gender identity.”  The law – known as the New South Wales's Conversion Practices Ban Act 2024 -- is part of a trend of laws that seek to outlaw so-called “conversion therapy,” the clinical practice of helping someone embrace their God-given sexuality and gender. What makes the law different is how broadly “conversion therapy” is defined beyond a traditional clinical setting.   In an interview with The Washington Stand, Arielle Del Turco, director of the Center for Religious Liberty at the Family Research Council, said, “This is a terrible new law in this Australian state, and they aren't even trying to hide it. According to the state government's own admission from their website, this law will prevent a pastor or any believer from praying with someone who is asking for prayer for freedom from gender identity issues.”  Genesis 1:27 says, "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." Italy's top court scraps ‘mother' and ‘father' on ID cards Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation has restored the use of “Parent 1” and “Parent 2” on Italian ID cards because it deemed that calling parents ‘father' and ‘mother' is discriminatory against homosexual couples, reports the European Conservative. To her credit, conservative Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had announced the return of the terms “father” and “mother” on identity documents back in 2023. Supreme Court blocks deportation of illegal Venezuelans On Saturday, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting an unspecified number of illegal Venezuelan men, currently in immigration custody, who are alleged to be members of a criminal gang, reports The Epoch Times. The order was issued after the American Civil Liberties Union filed an emergency request on behalf of its Venezuelan clients late on April 18 asking the Supreme Court to immediately block the Trump administration from deporting the clients. On March 14th, President Donald Trump signed Proclamation 10903, in which he officially declared that Tren de Aragua, a designated foreign terrorist organization, “is perpetrating, attempting, and threatening an invasion or predatory incursion against the territory of the United States.” The president invoked the Alien Enemies Act to authorize the “immediate apprehension, detention, and removal” of members of the group who are Venezuelan citizens 14 years of age or older and who are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States. Democrats want to visit El Salvador's prison housing deported illegals Democrats in both chambers of Congress are working to organize delegations to El Salvador to see the prison where President Trump is sending these violent illegal immigrants. Initially, El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele built the prison in 2022 as part of a response to surging gang violence in El Salvador, according to National Public Radio. Each cell can fit 65 to 70 prisoners, and the prison has a capacity of 40,000 inmates.  Trump asked Bukele to build five identically-sized prisons to receive more violent illegal immigrants from America. The deported Venezuelan illegals are living in the same conditions as convicted gangsters. Democrat Representatives Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.), Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) as well as Democrat Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) are the politicians who want to fly to El Salvador. However, House Homeland Security Committee chair Mark Green, a Republican from Tennessee, said he wouldn't grant their request, reports Axios. CNN conservative commentator Scott Jennings explained that this kind of move by the Democrats is why they only have a 21% approval rating by the American public. JENNINGS: “First of all, I'm more than happy to hear the Congressman say they're all going to El Salvador. I think for Republicans, this just confirms what we have believed about the Democratic Party and why it currently has a 21% approval rating in Congress. “Look where the energy in the Democratic Party is. It's around retrieving illegal aliens from El Salvador. It's around fighting for these college campuses that have been rife with anti semitism. It's around biological males who want to play in girls' sports. “This is why they are losing to Donald Trump every day, because the energy that Democrats feel comes on all these issues that are fundamentally not where the American people are.” Rahm Emmanuel wants to run for President In the world of politics, Democrat Rahm Emanuel has done a lot. Not only did he serve as President Bill Clinton's Senior Advisor for policy and strategy and as U.S. Congressman from Illinois for three terms, but Emmauel was President Barack Obama's White House Chief of Staff, served as mayor of Chicago, and most recently was the United States ambassador to Japan. Now, Rahm Emmanuel wants to be president. In a recent speech, he said, “I am done with the discussion of locker rooms. I am done with the discussion of bathrooms. We better start having a conversation about the classroom,” drawing applause as he alluded to a new study showing more than two-thirds of eighth graders can't read at grade level. Texas House greenlights $210 million to support pregnant women To hear it from abortion activists, pro-life Americans don't care about women and children – especially after banning abortions. But in the state of Texas that notion is totally false, reports LifeNews. On April 11th, Texas lawmakers gave preliminary approval to $210 million in support for pregnant moms. Texas Right to Life explained, “The Texas House voted to fully fund life-saving nonprofits at $210 million in the Thriving Texas Families program. These providers help mothers choose Life by offering baby materials (like diapers and formula), counseling, and job skills training. This victory isn't about dollars. It's about the children and families rescued from abortion.” Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, April 21st, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. In a recent Oval Office meeting, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sat across from Donald Trump as part of a European Union effort to navigate the ongoing trade turbulence. The meeting was cordial enough. Meloni emphasized transatlantic unity and expressed hope for deeper economic collaboration. Trump, however, was unmoved. He praised Meloni personally, but made his stance clear: the U.S. is not in a rush to finalize trade deals. According to him, tariffs are “making the United States rich,” and other countries want deals more than he does. This exchange happened during the 90-day pause in Trump's Liberation Day tariffs — a moment intended, at least in theory, to give global leaders time to negotiate. But what the meeting really signaled is that Trump views this pause as leverage, not compromise. Yes, he did lower EU import tariffs from 20% to 10%, but that move was largely a reaction to bond market jitters. When it comes to negotiating with Europe, he's staying firm.Meloni's presence is notable. She's a controversial figure in Europe — once derided by the American press as a far-right nationalist and compared to Mussolini. But in this moment, she's being positioned as the EU's Trump whisperer. She attended Trump's inauguration. He's reportedly fond of her. He even accepted an invitation to visit Rome. But none of that moved the needle in this meeting. What Trump wants is access to European markets. But in European politics, protectionism isn't just a policy — it's a survival tactic. Leaders there know that anything perceived as selling out local interests could cost them their jobs. Italy, for example, has a trade surplus with the U.S., not because of anything shady, but because Americans genuinely love Italian exports: high-end fashion, food, luxury goods. We buy a lot from them. They don't buy much from us. That's not an imbalance that tariffs alone can fix.So the real question is: what happens next? Trump has all but said he's happy to wait everyone out. That leaves European economies in a holding pattern. It leaves small and medium U.S. businesses — especially those tangled up in international supply chains — in limbo. And it leaves Meloni with the unenviable job of being the friendly face of a negotiation that isn't really moving.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:13 - Interview with Gabe Fleisher00:23:00 - Update00:23:36 - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Visit00:27:44 - Birthright Citizenship Arguments00:30:05 - FSU Shooting00:31:47 - Interview with Gabe Fleisher, con't00:59:13 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. EU Scream

Musk, Zuckerberg and Vance have stomped into the EU's canteen, overturned the tables, smashed the glasses, and drawn their pistols. They are scanning a crowd of bewildered Eurocrats and asking menacingly: who really wants a fight over what belongs online? It wasn't meant to be this way. Three years ago the EU agreed a landmark law, the Digital Services Act, or DSA. Hopes were high that hate speech, content that harms minors — as well as fake news and weaponised social media — could be reined in. The biggest platforms would be fined up to 6 percent of global annual turnover if they failed to deal with issues like election interference that amount to a systemic risk. Since then the transatlantic far right has stepped up a campaign to discredit the EU's rules, and often in fanatical terms. Under this new form of McCarthyism, any impediment to online expression is branded as a form of censorship. That is patently absurd. Bans on speech linked to the Nazi period have been in place in parts of Europe for decades. But concerns are growing that the European Commission's ongoing cases against X and Meta under the DSA could become bargaining chips or even get traded away to ease standoffs with the Trump administration. Already the Commission is reportedly lowballing digital markets fines against Silicon Valley giants and talking about simplifying its range of digital regulations — including the DSA. That looks like complying in advance with US intimidation. On the other hand, the Commission could use the Trump administration's bullying tactics to invoke another law — the so-called Anti-Coercion Instrument. That could restrict aspects of Musk's businesses as well as the services of some US digital companies — and it would amount to a more muscular response. In this episode: two prominent MEPs urge the European Commission to hold firm on enforcement of the DSA after their mission to Washington, where they met MAGA hardliners like Congressman Jim Jordan and where they witnessed the kind shocking disdain for Europe echoed most recently in Signal messages shared with The Atlantic. "Everything we are doing in EU is seen as an attempt to be anti-American," says Christel Schaldemose, the Danish social democrat who is a vice president of the European Parliament and an architect of DSA. "That was very, very scary." Christel also is a coordinator on plans to combat foreign influence with a so-called Democracy Shield, which she suggested could allow for suspension of social media in the run up to elections. Sandro Gozi, the Italian liberal who is a former member of French and Italian governments, says the EU must show it has the nerve to impose its laws in the face of U.S. coercion. Sandro says lawmakers would never agree to sacrifice the DSA, which he characterises as "non-negotiable," in exchange for lower tariffs. Sandro also excoriates Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her party for retreating from previous enthusiasm for Ukraine — and for the DSA.Support the show

A strong relationship is being forged between Italy and the United States. Donald Trump has called Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a “fantastic woman”, and says she's taken Europe "by storm”. Meloni was the only European leader present at Trump's inauguration as President, and had also visited him at his Mar a Lago retreat in Florida a couple of weeks ago. Italy Correspondent Jo McKenna told Ryan Bridge that she's positioning herself as the “go to” leader of Europe. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He had served about half of a seven-year sentence for trumped-up charges. Franklin Graham cited Daniel 2 and urged Americans to turn to God Before Donald Trump was inaugurated and sworn in as the 47th president of the United States in the Capitol Rotunda on Monday, Franklin Graham offered this prayer in which he quoted Daniel 2:21. GRAHAM: “Our Father and our God, Thou hast said, ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.' As the prophet Daniel prayed, ‘Blessed be the name of God forever and ever. For wisdom and might are His. He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings. He raises up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.' “Our Father today, as President Donald J. Trump takes the oath of office once again, we come to say thank You, O Lord, our God Father. When Donald Trump's enemies thought he was down and out, You and You alone, saved his life and raised him up with strength and power by your mighty hand.” Graham concluded his 3-minute prayer with these words. GRAHAM: “We remember to keep our eyes fixed on You and may our hearts be inclined to Your voice. We know that America can never be great again if we turn our backs on You. We ask for Your help. And we pray all of this in the name of the King of kings, the Lord of lords, Your Son, my Savior, and our Redeemer, Jesus, Christ. Bush, and Bill Clinton witnessed Trump's inauguration.  Michelle Obama was the only presidential spouse who chose not to attend in order to send a message of disapproval. Trump: "The golden age of America begins right now!” On Monday, President Donald Trump gave a 30-minute inauguration speech inside the Capitol Rotunda beginning with this memorable line. TRUMP:  “The golden age of America begins right now!” (applause) Once he has implemented his policies, he's convinced that America's reputation will dramatically improve. TRUMP: “America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world.” Trump affirmed two genders. TRUMP: “As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female.” (applause) He encouraged national pride with the caveat that Americans need to remember God. TRUMP: “National unity is now returning to America and confidence and pride is soaring like never before. … We will not forget our country. We will not forget our Constitution. And we will not forget our God. Can't do that.” (applause) And President Trump referred to the first assassination attempt on his life. TRUMP: “Just a few months ago, in a beautiful Pennsylvania field, an assassin's bullet ripped through my ear. But I felt then, and believe even more so now, that my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again!” (applause) Read a transcript of Trump's inauguration speech here. Martin Luther King's niece: MLK Day & Trump Inauguration providential Alveda King, Martin Luther King, Jr's niece, spoke up in an op-ed column on FoxNews.com yesterday. She noted first that “It is no coincidence that on the very same day as MLK Day, we will celebrate the second inauguration of President Trump. I believe that God made it so that these two events would align.”   King's main concern was protecting the lives of the unborn. She wrote, “Let us all praise the Almighty that abortion is no longer a constitutionally protected right in the United States. Yet this does not mean that our work is over as a movement. Instead, as we continue to march in support of the unborn, we will also turn our efforts to the state level to protect life through state legislatures.” Biden issues pardons for his own family minutes before Trump's oath Lame Duck President Joe Biden pardoned several controversial figures who have yet to be indicted for any crime.   The list includes Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, General Mark Milley (Ret.), Democratic Senator Adam Schiff of California, and former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming. Then, just minutes before leaving the presidency, Biden issued blanket pardons for members of his own family including his brother James and his wife, Sara; his sister, Valerie, and her husband, John Owens; and his brother Francis. However, Trump prosecutor Jack Smith, former FBI Director Christopher Wray, and Attorney General Merrick Garland were not on the list of pardons. Trump's executive orders set a new course President Trump immediately went to work signing over a hundred presidential directives, reports CBS News. Among other initiatives, he (1) Closed the border to asylum-seeking migrants. (2) Declared an end to birthright citizenship. (3) Assigned the military to border security. (4) Established biological sex definitions of male and female for federal workers and schools. (5) Declared a national energy emergency for the nation's energy resources and rolled back regulations on energy production. and (6) Opened up Alaska to more oil and gas drilling. Trump released his own cryptocurrency The incoming president, Donald Trump, also released his own cryptocurrency over the weekend, reports USA Today. In less than 24 hours, the Trump Coin increased in value by 18,000% -- with a market cap of over $5 billion. And Melania Trump also got her own crypto coin, now with a market cap of $2.15 billion.   Fartcoin, another joke crypto has got a value of $1.8 billion as of today. The total market capitalization for cryptocurrency is approaching $4 trillion. That's about five times the size of the U.S. oil and gas industry. A few less Americans are investing in 25,000 different crypto-coins. 40% of men and 16% of women invested in 2024 — slightly lower numbers than 2023. People most stressed in Louisiana And finally, WalletHub did a study on the most stressed out state populations in America. Louisianans were the most stressed and Minnesotans were the least stressed. Generally, those in the northern states are not stressed, while people in the southern states are more stressed out -- based on money, work, family, and health-related issues. Philippians 4:6-8 reminds us to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, January 21st, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Which EU politicians will attend the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States today and why are the European Conservatives and Reformists so tight with the Republicans? Questions Radio Schuman answers today.Although foreign heads of state and government are generally not invited to US presidential inauguration ceremonies, numerous European politicians will attend Donald Trump's swearing-in event.Among them are prominent right-wing leaders such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spain's Santiago Abascal, and France's Marion Marechal. Many of these individuals are affiliated with the third and fourth largest factions in the European Parliament: the Patriots for Europe and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).Sources indicate that a majority of ECR leadership will attend, including newly elected president Mateusz Morawiecki, as well as vice presidents Carlo Fidanza, Marion Marechal, and George Simion.Additionally, several lesser-known Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) such as Rihard Kols from Latvia, Dominik Tarczynski from Law and Justice, and Croatia's Stephen Bartulica are expected to participate. While the Patriots for Europe is a relatively new group, the ECR, founded in 2009, has developed long-standing ties with the Republican Party.Today Radio Schuman explores the connections with Euronews reporter Vincenzo Genovese. We also take a quick look at the agenda of the day, including the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg and the meeting of EU finance ministers of the Euro area.Additionally, Radio Schuman explores those parts of Europe where flights experience more turbulence.Radio Schuman is hosted and produced by Maïa de la Baume, with journalist and production assistant Eleonora Vasques, audio editing by David Brodheim. And if this is too big of a commitment, I'm always thankful for a simple cup of coffee.]You may or may not have a relative or friend or acquaintance in your life who has posted on social media in the past few days, quite sardonically, that there's a lot of money to be made in betting on Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who just made it to the semifinals of women's boxing in the 66kg weight class at the Paris Olympics. The past several days have seen a deluge of disinformation across the internet regarding Ms. Khelif, whose sex has been called into question because she was simply too good in her Olympics match against Italy's Angela Carini, who gave up 46 seconds into their bout and then implied Ms. Khelif may not be a fair competitor.Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, J.K. Rowling, rightwing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and YouTube star Logan Paul, among others, have viciously spread vile propaganda that Ms. Khelif is actually a man, not only smearing her reputation with transphobic and misogynistic nonsense but also likely putting her in danger. To be clear, there are three trans athletes in the Paris Olympics, none of whom are trans women. You can read more about them right here. But hey, it's been interesting to watch the response of sports betting markets! That's probably why your “very concerned” relative insisted on plunking down a wad of cash on Ms. Khelif winning the Gold Medal in her weight class, despite simultaneously dehumanizing her.Let's review how betting odds work. 1. The better the odds for an athlete winning, the lower they yield for bettors. Ms. Khelif, for example, currently has -500 odds on Fanduel. This has jumped substantially in light of the anti-trans propaganda online this week. That means a bettor has to wager $5 on her in order to make $1. The question then becomes: would you put down $500 to make $100? Some folks would, but it's pretty risky. It's even riskier when you consider that the odds are very likely inflated due to the incomplete reporting on Ms. Khelif over the past several days. That brings me to my second point. 2. Ms. Khelif has a 42-9 record. She has lost previously to nine other women. Nine. That includes a loss to Amy Broadhurst of Ireland in the World Boxing Championships, who is among the women loudly defending Ms. Khelif against these horrid accusations. Nine times she's lost to other women in the ring. Think about that. That brings me to my third point.3. There has been no evidence presented that Ms. Khelif has XY chromosomes, but a woman having XY chromosomes does not mean she's a man. Contrary to what I think most of us were taught in 6th grade biology, there are non-trans women with XY chromosomes and non-trans men with XX chromosomes. This is long-established science. You can read more about it here. There is also no evidence that Ms. Khelif has differences in sexual development (DSD) or Swyer's Syndrome or any other condition that may present her chromosomal status as having substantially "male" sex characteristics. That brings me to my fourth point. 4. Ms. Khelif was disqualified by the IBA last year in incredibly murky circumstances. The International Boxing Association (IBA) refused to be transparent about their testing methodology, which, in itself, is bonkers. Her disqualification just so happened to come three days after she beat Russian boxer Azalia Amineva in the semfinals of the IBA Women's World Championship. The IBA has strong, documented ties to the Russian government. Its president, Umar Kremlev, is a Russian citizen. He also serves on the Executive Committee of Russia's boxing federation. After becoming its president in 2020, Mr. Kremlev moved the IBA's operations to Russia and made Gazprom, Russia's state-owned energy company, its sole sponsor. Mr. Kremlev is an associate of Putin, which feels pretty redundant to state after all the above. All of this, plus a number of other concerns over corruption, led to the International Olympic Committee, last year, stripping the IBA as an eligibility authority for the Paris Olympics. In response, Mr. Kremlev called IOC President Thomas Bach a "chief sodomite." Classy. That brings me to my fifth point. 5. Ms. Khelif's country, Algeria, is notoriously anti-LGBTQ. The rights of queer Algerians is abysmal. Are there non-LGBTQ Algerians who support equality? Of course, but the Algerian government does not. It is illegal to be transgender in Algeria. It is impossible for a trans woman to obtain an Algerian passport indicating her as female. Ms. Khelif would literally not be able to leave the country with a female passport if she were transgender, which she is not. Of course, this is further moot given that 1) Ms. Khelif's father has provided her birth certificate establishing she was assigned female at birth and 2) trans women are barred from competing in boxing at the Olympics. That brings me to my sixth point. 6. This isn't really about whether or not Ms. Khelif is a woman. It's about women athletes only being valid when they meet arbitrary standards of femininity as defined through the male gaze. Women athletes as varied as Serena Williams and Katie Ledecky—whom I think most of us would agree are gorgeous (not that it should matter, of course)—have been targeted in the past by vile rumors that they aren't really women. Because they're too damn good and aspects of their bodies may not align with the absurd and arbitrary expectations of the male gaze. Women can be successful in the male gaze if, and only if, they please the male gaze. And even then, not really. That brings me to my final point. 7. Male athletes don't deal with this nonsense. When a man is stronger and faster, preternaturally gifted, has extraordinary biological deviations from the norm, he is celebrated and mythologized. When a male boxer KOs their opponent in the first ten seconds of a bout, it is cause for adulation. When a woman does it, she is suspect. Sounds a lot like misogyny to me. Of course, Angela Carini, the Italian boxer whom Ms. Khelif defeated in that bout that launched this whole controversy, recognized this within a day of the match. She said: "All this controversy certainly made me sad, and I also felt sorry for my opponent, she had nothing to do with it and like me was only here to fight... It was not intentional, in fact I apologize to her and to everyone. I was angry, because my Games had already gone up in smoke. I have nothing against Khelif and on the contrary if I happened to meet her again I would give her a hug." She hasn't been the only one to back off. The Boston Globe released a rare statement apologizing for their sloppy reporting on the story, and Logan Paul released a statement backpedaling on his claims. I'm gonna leave it there. So, if your relative would like to risk $500 to win $100 on all this controversy and disinformation surrounding Ms. Khelif, they are welcome to do so. But it seems like a wobbly bet.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and actor Roberto Benigni were also in attendance. With the event, the pope hoped to raise awareness about children's plight in war, promote global peace, care for the environment and empower the younger generation.  On the show, producer and guest host Ricardo da Silva, S.J. and veteran Vatican reporter Gerard O'Connell discuss this unique event and the Vatican's ongoing efforts to foster peace and dialogue among warring factions worldwide. Turkey and Italy consider teaming up to seek new influence in Africa

International report

Turkey and Italy are finding common ground as they seek to expand their economic and diplomatic influence in Africa. The two nations are eyeing opportunities to cooperate on security, energy and migration as France's traditional influence on the continent wanes. This month, Somalia's parliament ratified an agreement with Turkey to provide naval protection and assistance in building a Somali navy, another step in Turkey's efforts to expand its African presence."With this pact, Turkey will protect the Somali coast from pirates, terrorists – anyone that violates our maritime borders, like Ethiopia," declared Abdifatah Kasim, Somalia's deputy defence minister. The defence deal was followed by a bilateral agreement on energy exploration in Somalia.Ankara's growing influence in the region was underscored by a strong African presence at Turkey's annual Antalya Diplomacy Forum, with seven African heads of state, seven prime ministers and 25 foreign ministers in attendance. In January, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hosted African leaders at a summit in Rome, where she unveiled plans to expand Italy's influence on the continent."Our future inevitably depends on the future of the African continent. We are aware of this, and we want to do our part," Meloni declared."That's why we have decided to launch an ambitious programme of interventions that can help the continent grow and prosper, starting from its immense resources." Italy targets energy, migration with 'non-predatory' plan for AfricaCommon ground in LibyaAnalysts say both countries are considering cooperating as a means of achieving their Africa goals."Italy is trying to fulfil a position that Western countries in some way left over the last decades, while Turkey has already been in Africa and in sub-Saharan Africa," observes Alessia Chiriatti of the Institute of International Affairs, an Italian think tank."The main issues for confrontation or cooperation – we will see – will be migration, energy issues, and, of course, the economic development of these countries," she says. Also in January, Meloni met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. The meeting included talks on Africa, with a focus on cooperation in Libya – a country where experts say Ankara has considerable influence, including a military base. The North African nation is a main transit route for migrants seeking to enter Europe, mainly through Italy. Tunisia brush-off augurs badly for EU push for African migration dealsItaly, France and other European countries see that as a "huge threat", according to Elem Eyrice-Tepeciklioglu of the African Studies Department at Ankara's Social Sciences University."So there is room to cooperate in this area and to prevent the illegal flow of migrants, and cooperate in the security area as well."On Tuesday, the Italian and Turkish defence ministers held talks in Ankara. Exploiting Libya's vast energy reserves is also potential common ground.France on the outsMeanwhile the recent ousting of regimes sympathetic to France in Niger, Mali and Gabon – and with it, the withdrawal of French forces – has severely weakened France's historical political and economic influence in West Africa. That offers an opportunity to Italy and Turkey."Italy could have an important cooperation with Turkey in order to take advantage of the position left aside by some countries like France, like Germany, like the other Western countries in Africa," says analyst Chiriatti."But it will also depend on the bilateral agenda and bilateral interests expressed by Turkey and Italy," she adds. "That's not always the same. So in this sense, we need to see what will happen in the future step by step." Newly reconciled, Turkey and Egypt could be a force for stability in AfricaBusiness opportunitiesChiriatti warns that cooperation can easily turn into rivalry in business. But Africa's vast economic potential is seen as offering plenty of room for partnership."There are several areas where Turkey can cooperate with other countries, including European countries, because Turkish companies are trying to increase their investments," says Eyrice-Tepeciklioglu."They would like to gain new contracts for large projects, et cetra. Africa is in desperate need of infrastructure. There's a huge energy deficit and infrastructure gap in the whole continent," she notes. With Italy and Turkey lacking the financial muscle of other influential players on the continent – notably China – both countries have powerful incentives to focus on potential partnership in their bid to expand their influence in Africa.

Markus Becker of Der Spiegel describes a developing situation in Germany where the popularity of the far-right AfD party has surged over the past year. Revelations that members of the AfD discussed deportations of non-assimilated people and of those with non-German backgrounds has prompted a huge backlash including mass demonstrations. The AfD has created further headaches for itself by calling for a so-called Dexit, or an exit from the European Union. Markus says that's likely to turn off large swathes of voters in a country where industry and exports underpin prosperity. Markus also discusses his powerful editorial laying out how to fortify Germany's constitution in the event that the AfD acts to dismantle democracy in future. In our news review we assess Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's threat to veto EU aid for Ukraine a second time. Orbán quickly dropped that idea after finding himself effectively isolated in the European Council facing threats serious enough to impact his grip on power. But Orbán was active on other fronts in Brussels. He met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and reportedly deepened his Fidesz party's ties with her Brothers of Italy. Orbán also filmed himself among ranks of tractors showing support for a large and unruly protest by farmers. Shortly afterwards the farmers tore down a 19th century statue in a square opposite the European Parliament. The monument, to a steel mechanic, was left cracked and partly melted by fires. Amid the disorder Europe's leaders were quick to offer further concessions — just the latest sign of the grossly disproportionate power farmers exercise in Europe.Support the show

Over the past decade, Elon Musk's car company has transformed itself from a niche brand with a novelty product into a major automotive manufacturer and clear market leader. And yet, Tesla Inc.'s leadership position in electric cars is slipping. On Jan. 2, the company reported it delivered almost 485,000 vehicles to customers. The figure was in line with Wall Street expectations, but slightly less than that reported by China's BYD Co., which delivered roughly 526,000 electric cars. On the latest episode, our panel discusses how BYD became Tesla's most important competitor, even though it doesn't sell cars in the US. Elon Musk declared artificial intelligence “one of the most disruptive forces in history” in a sit down conversation with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that dove into the dangers and opportunities of AI on Thursday, capping off the UK's inaugural AI Safety Summit.  “AI will be a force for good most likely,” Musk said. “But the probability of it going bad is not zero percent.”  The two men spoke in an interview-style chat from a stage at Lancaster House, a government venue in central London often used for diplomatic purposes, before the conversation was opened up to questions from journalists. The conversation was then posted for streaming on Musk's personal account on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter that he owns.  Musk was present throughout the two-day event held mainly at Bletchley Park, the headquarters for the Allied Forces codebreaking program during World War II, along with US Vice President Kamala Harris, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and other notable politicians and global tech leaders. Chinese officials were also present at the event.  “I'm glad to see at this point that people are taking AI seriously,” Musk said to Sunak on Thursday. “Thanks for this summit. I think it will go down in history as quite important.”  Musk unpacked several predictions for AI, including a future where no jobs would be necessary and AI companionship would be one of the highest forms of friendship.  In office for just over a year, Sunak has restored some calm to British politics, but also faced challenges over his elite background, having studied at the exclusive Winchester College, Oxford and Stanford universities. Before entering politics, he worked for banks and hedge funds, including Goldman Sachs.  In the first day of his AI event, more than 25 countries and the European Union signed the Bletchley Declaration, agreeing to work together to create a united approach to oversight in efforts to deploy AI technology in a “human-centric, trustworthy and responsible” way, underscoring the “potential for serious, even catastrophic, harm” that many tech leaders have expressed concern over.  Musk and world leaders  Musk's conversation with Sunak is one of numerous chats with world leaders the SpaceX and Tesla CEO has joined in the past few months. It showed his growing influence in geopolitical affairs as well as various technology and industrial sectors.  Musk met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in September, weeks before the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. Netanyahu met with Musk to discuss artificial intelligence and antisemitism on the Musk-owned social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, at a time Musk was warring with the Anti-Defamation League.  Musk also sat down with French President Emmanuel Macron numerous times in the past year. Other big names that recently made time for Musk in their schedule include Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in June, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September.  At the event Thursday, Musk noted that if the AI powerhouses such as the United States and the UK “are aligned on AI safety, that is a good thing.” And he suggested other global powers such as China should also remain involved in discussions.  He compared AI to a magic genie and noted that fairy tales with magic genies that grant wishes “don't end well” and cause people to “be careful what you wish for.”  Musk has increasingly become a fixture in international affairs, making headlines not only for his meetings with heads of state but also for the provision – or lack thereof – of SpaceX's Starlink satellite services in war-torn regions.  Starlink in war zones  The billionaire received backlash this week for pledging to provide aid organizations in Gaza with Starlink satellite service as the besieged strip struggles with internet connectivity. The Israeli Minister of Communications Shlomo Karhi said on X that Hamas “will use it for terrorist activities.”  “Perhaps Musk would be willing to condition it with the release of our abducted babies, sons, daughters, elderly people. All of them! By then, my office will cut any ties with starlink,” Karhi posted.  Musk made the announcement on X after US Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that “cutting off all communication to a population of 2.2 million is unacceptable.”  “Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza,” Musk said in a post replying to Ocasio-Cortez.  In Walter Isaacson's new biography of the eccentric billionaire titled “Elon Musk,” it was revealed that Musk secretly ordered his engineers not to turn on his company's Starlink satellite communications network near the Crimean coast last year to avoid supporting a Ukrainian sneak attack on the Russian naval fleet.  “There was an emergency request from government authorities to activate Starlink all the way to Sevastopol. The obvious intent being to sink most of the Russian fleet at anchor,” Musk posted on X in September.  Musk's decision, which left Ukrainian officials begging him to turn the satellites on, was driven by an acute fear that Russia would respond to a Ukrainian attack on Crimea with nuclear weapons, a fear driven home by Musk's conversations with senior Russian officials, according to Isaacson.  “If I had agreed to their request, then SpaceX would be explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation,” Musk tweeted in September.  Sunak's AI Summit  The billionaire's presence at the UK's summit brought an increased level of media attention to the event that is key to Sunak's hope for global AI regulation.  Sunak and Musk discussed how digital super-intelligence could affect the public and require regulation the same way industries such as aviation and cars require regulation.  “I agree with the vast majority of regulations,” Musk said. “A referee is a good thing.”  At the same time, Musk reiterated his “fairly utopian” belief that AI could create an “age of abundance” with “no shortage of goods and services.” He says AI could lead to a future where “no job is needed” and people enjoy a universal high income. He mentioned a world of AI tutors and companionship for people like his son who has learning disabilities and difficulty making friends.  The next AI safety summits are set to be hosted by Korea and France and are scheduled for 2024.  - by Jennifer Korn, CNNSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(AURN News) - As the conflict between Israel and Hamas rages on in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack by Hamas, prominent world leaders have joined forces to express their unwavering support for Israel. President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a collective statement over the weekend, emphasizing their solidarity with the Israeli people. This display of international support comes after Hamas carried out a deadly terrorist attack on October 7th, escalating an already volatile situation in the region. The release of two hostages by Hamas marked a potential step toward de-escalation. The joint statement, released by the White House, underlined the leaders' shared commitment to encouraging the release of more hostages. The statement went on to further say that Israel has a “right to defend itself against terrorism," also calling for "adherence to international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.” The White House further expressed the leaders' dedication to continuing diplomatic coordination as they work collectively to find a resolution to the ongoing crisis. The Wilmington documents are the second stash of Obama-era classified documents to be uncovered. The first collection was found at the Washington office of the Penn Biden Center, a Biden-aligned think tank. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/washington-secrets/more-americans-id-as-republicans-than-democrats More Americans identify as Republicans than Democrats For the first time in decades, more people identify as Republicans than Democrats, a striking change that bolsters polls showing that the United States is a moderate-conservative nation. In the latest massive Gallup survey of 10,000 adults, 45% identified as Republicans and 44% as Democrats. That’s a tiny edge for sure, but it’s the first time the GOP has had the lead since former President George H.W. Bush launched the Gulf War in 1991. Gallup said: “A virtual tie in party identification and leaning represents one of the better outcomes for the Republican Party over the past three decades.” However, when the choice of independents is thrown in, more U.S. adults picked that label. “Since 2009, independent identification has grown and reached levels not seen before. Now, political independents (41%) greatly outnumber Republican (28%) and Democratic (28%) identifiers,” said Gallup on Thursday. In a related survey, the polling giant also said that America politically is a moderate-conservative nation. When asked to describe their political views, 47% of adults said moderate, 30% conservative, and 21% liberal. That survey also revealed that the Democrats are more liberal than ever. “After hovering near 50% in recent years, the percentage of Democrats who identify as politically liberal rose four percentage points in 2022 to 54%, a new high for this group,” said Gallup. https://www.based-politics.com/2023/01/11/these-5-states-lost-the-most-population-in-2022/ These 5 states lost the most population in 2022 Another year is in the books, which means there’s another year of data to analyze, too. And the Tax Foundation just published an interesting analysis shedding light on which states gained the most population in 2022—and which ones saw residents leave in droves. The analysis examined the time period between July 2021 and July 2022 and found overall US population growth was at 0.4%, but some states’ populations shrank while others grew. As it turns out, the state that gained the most population was Florida, which saw 1.9% population growth. Other states that gained 1% population include Idaho, South Carolina, Texas, South Dakota, Montana, Delaware, Arizona, North Carolina, Utah, Tennessee, Georgia, and Nevada. Meanwhile, the 5 states that lost the most population were: New York (-0.9%) Illinois (-0.8%) Louisiana (-0.8%) West Virginia (-0.6%) Hawaii (-0.5%) Noticing any trends yet? Generally speaking, the states losing population are blue states with high taxes and heavily restricted economies. On the other hand, the booming states, like Florida, South Carolina, and Texas, are red states with lower tax burdens and less-regulated economies. That’s just speculation, but it’s borne out in the data. “People move for many reasons,” the Tax Foundation explains. “Sometimes taxes are expressly part of the calculation. Often, they play an indirect role (by contributing to a broadly favorable economic environment). And other times, of course, they don’t factor in at all. The Census data and these industry studies cannot tell us exactly why each person moved, but there is no denying a very strong correlation between low-tax, low-cost states and population growth.” It really is becoming so glaring that even New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently admitted their state needs to address its population drain—months after telling Republicans to “get out.” As twitter user Jim Stinson tweeted: If you tell people to leave, they will. If you over-regulate them and overtax them, they will leave faster. https://www.dailywire.com/news/out-of-left-field-uscs-school-of-social-work-bans-the-word-field-because-its-racist-apparently USC’s School Of Social Work Bans The Word ‘Field’ Because It’s Racist, Apparently Have you ever aspired to be the best in your field? Did you ever refer to doing a job outside of the office as “field work?” Well, if you answered yes to any of those questions, then you may unwittingly be promoting racism and bigotry — according to the University of Southern California School of Social Work. It seems wokeness knows no bounds — which is entirely the point of those who promote it. They have no limit in their zeal to assert power and are willing to coerce you into following along with their plan. On January 9, the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work sent an email to faculty, staff, and students notifying them that the department has new speech code guidelines in order to ensure “inclusive language and practice.” “Specifically, we have decided to remove the term ‘field,’ from our curriculum and practice and replace it with ‘practicum,'” the letter explained. What is so egregious about the word “field”? Well, according to the brainiacs out on the West Coast, it is offensive to black and immigrants everywhere. “Language can be powerful, and phrases such as ‘going into the field’ or ‘fieldwork’ may have connotations for descendants of slavery and immigrant workers that are not benign,” according to the letter. If a word isn’t “benign” that would mean it is malignant. Per the letter sent around, the word “field” is so malevolent that merely using it promotes “white supremacy, anti-immigrant and anti-blackness ideologies.” So, the school is beginning to put its words into action by banning the term altogether. In doing so, of course, they are unwittingly revealing their own racism by implying that only black people and immigrants work in “fields.” It doesn’t need to be said, but of course, every civilization on earth has had “fields” in one form or another and somebody who worked there. https://humanevents.com/2023/01/11/italian-mp-giorgia-meloni-mimics-desantis-sends-migrants-to-left-run-cities?utm_campaign=64487 Italian PM Giorgia Meloni Pulls a DeSantis, Sends Migrants to Left-Run Cities The government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing a fierce backlash from their left-wing detractors after directing NGO ships carrying illegal migrants to ports in cities governed by pro-migration mayors, a move immediately compared to a policy ordered by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, As part of a recent security decree, authorities are now redirecting vessels that pick up migrants in the Mediterranean to ports located farther away from the search and rescue area, frequently opting for cities governed by leftist mayors. the decree has been met with opposition from the left-leaning Democratic Party and the mayors of the affected cities, both of whom argue the measures are excessive and go against the supposed advantages of mass illegal migration. However, these concerns were rubbished by Wand Ferro, the undersecretary at Italy’s Interior Ministry, who said: “The left protests because NGO ships are finally disembarking in other regions of central Italy and no longer only in the South. Evidently, on the left, they would like to transform Calabria and Sicily into the refugee camp of Europe, a completely unacceptable prospect.” Ferro stated that the asylum centers in southern Italy have faced persistent strain for years and that the government's action to alleviate that pressure amount to a necessary response. She also dismissed the criticisms from NGOs who operate the migrant transport ships, pointing out that it is not unusual for these ships to keep refugees at sea for extended periods while waiting to pick up more migrants, adding that these ships have a tendency to take migrants to European ports instead of closer ports located in North Africa. “Perhaps the left suffers from a sort of NIMBY [not in my backyard] syndrome, preaching welcome as long as it is away from their backyard,” Ferro continued. However, NGOs who help facilitate these routes of illegal migration complained in a joint statement that the policy is hindering their efforts to save stranded migrants. “Among other rules, the Italian government requires civilian rescue ships to head to Italy after each rescue immediately," the statement reads. "This delays further lifesaving operations, as ships usually carry out multiple rescues over the course of several days." The policy of the Meloni conservative government, which came to power in last October's general election, immediately drew comparisons to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who last year sent illegal migrants to the wealthy, heavily liberal island enclave of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. The move sparked outrage from wealthy residents, with local authorities opting to activate the National Guard in order to have the individuals quickly removed. Today I open with the following three topics all entwined: virtue-signaling, Tesla and Volkswagen. What ties them altogether? Alyssa Milano. Over the weekend, Milano tweeted: "I gave back my Tesla. I bought the VW ev. I love it. I'm not sure how advertisers can buy space on a Twitter. Publicly traded company's products being pushed in alignment with hate and white supremacy doesn't seem to be a winning business model." I wish I could blame her utter stupidity on youth, but that option is way back in the review mirror for Alyssa Milano. The genius who through a crocheted facemask would keep her safe from an aerosol virus not thinks ditching an American car company is her way of fighting hate and white supremacy. Maybe someone needs to let the stunningly ignorant actress know that Volkswagen was started and financially supported by Adolf Hitler. That's right, in an effort to virtue-signal to the world, Milano ditched an American success story in favor of aligning with the Aryan Nation. You just cannot make this stuff up, folks! Moving into topic two, it seems Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, helped get $16.4 million dollars of federal money for his good friends Columbia Ventures. They are the same people who partnered with Warnock and Ebenezer Baptist Church to fun the low-rent apartment that has people living in squalor and horrible conditions. For a revered, it seems he's more interested in counting the money over saving souls. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni plans to revoke financial benefits to Italians who refuse to find a job. Good for her! She's taking a page out of the Governor William Bradford playbook (checkout my Thanksgiving Day special from last week if you missed it) and getting rid of communalism. She wants to stop rewarding people for not working. What a bold idea! We are on the cusp of a railroad strike and Joe Biden tells reporters he is not directly involved in the negotiations. Unfortunately for him, his Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre spent time two days earlier telling the press he is directly involved. Once again, this White House shows how one side has no idea that the other side is doing. Finally, Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) deserves some mockery after saying that "...words nowadays can actually break your bones." So, be careful when speaking to someone, you may "actually break" their bones with just the sound of your voice. Who knew we humans had evolved to such capability. The non-binding deal was struck at the same time as state representatives attended climate talks at COP27 in Egypt, which is set to end on Friday. In 2021, an $8.5 billion deal was announced at last year's COP26 to help South Africa drop its reliance on coal. Macron calls to 'pressure' rich non-European states at COP27 French President Emmanuel Macron wants to put pressure on China and the US to help poor countries that suffer the greatest consequences of climate change, the president said at the start of the COP27 summit in Sharm-el-Sheikh on Sunday. EU backing Indonesia currently relies most heavily on coal for its energy consumption (37%), with its coal production growing by 105% over the past decade. However, under the Just Transition Partnership, Indonesia intends to reduce its dependence on coal resources earlier than previously announced. According to the deal, it has pledged to bring forth carbon neutrality for its power sector by 10 years. The same goes for the year it pledged to achieve peak emissions for the sector, winding back its goal to 2030 – seven years earlier than previously announced. At the same time, the deal states that Indonesia will reduce peak emission levels for its electricity sector by 19%, from 357 million tonnes of CO2 to 290 million tonnes emitted over the year – requiring the government to reduce subsidies for coal supply, or even reserve them for the development of low-carbon energy. To show Indonesia's commitment, President Joko Widodo is expected to issue a decree in the next few days that aims to double the rate of renewable deployment to at least 34% of the electricity mix by 2030. “They will be the ones reaping the benefits of the transformation of their economy, as Indonesia becomes a renewables hub,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following the announcement. The EU is investing €4 billion in renewable energy worldwide as part of the Global Gateway to develop new infrastructure in developing countries, the Commission chief said on Twitter. So far, only children and people with medical issues have been allowed to leave the ships in Sicily, but everyone else is still stranded.  UK correspondent Gavin Grey explained why this is harmful for the migrants in question, especially with supplies running low as possible diseases spreading within the ships.
