In 2020, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya emerged as a powerful voice for change in Belarus when she ran against President Alexander Lukashenko who has led the country since 1994 with what some call "an iron hand." The controversial results led to the largest protests in the country's history and pressure on Tsikhanouskaya to leave Belarus. As her country continues to face political turmoil and international condemnation for siding with Russian in its war on Ukraine, she tells host Steve Paikin that the fight for democracy remains at the forefront of mind.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ben and Tumaini wrap their U.S. Open coverage with a look at the women's and men's singles finals, in which Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner both completed a sweep of the hardcourt majors this season. The finals were both fairly straightforward, which leaves us for some time to cover related topics and listener questions including the intense celebrification of the U.S. Open (hello, Taylor Swift), Sabalenka's career vs Azarenka's, the shadow of Sinner's anti-doping saga over his win, and Olympics skipping paying off. We also zoom out a bit to discuss the total, generational European domination of men's tennis, and if a man born in the 1990s is ever going to win another Slam. Thank you for listening!
Sabalenka and Azarenka are out and Alcaraz and Sinner are through and we are here on the grounds at The Championships! Day 1 of Wimbledon is in the Tennis Weekly books and there is plenty for Joel and Chris to catch-up on. Newly crowned World No.1 Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz both had to overcome early battles whilst Britain's Emma Raducanu got the Brits off to a flying start along with her compatriots Lily Miyazaki and Sonay Kartal also through to Round 2.Naomi Osaka also won her first match at Wimbledon since 2016 whilst Coco Gauff banished her demons from last year's exit at the first hurdle. However there was heartbreak for Sabalenka, Azarenka and Alexandrova who all withdrew through injury to blow the bottom half wide open.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Toby is in Ibiza and James is in a funk as the diet he's on fails to really kick in and that leads to a discussion on DNA, genetically altered mosquitos, Bill Gates, lost friends and cocaine. Yep, it's quite the journey. On a serious note the lads take on the immigration crisis taking place all across Europe and especially the riots that have rocked France. In Culture Corner we begin with Wimbledon and the crowd's treatment of Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who was booed off the court after losing to the Ukranian Elina Svitolina. And since it's summertime we concentrate on books instead of television.Opening sound this week is Azarenka in her post match press conference.
As summer is in full bloom, we can't say the same about the sports world, but you know I'm more than capable to keep you abreast of what's gone on as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck: (3:31) After a few words about how the sports landscape is a little barren as we approach the middle of July, baseball has come to its All-Star Break as the Home Run Derby will take place tonight, followed by the Midsummer Classic tomorrow night in Seattle. Does the actual Derby generate more buzz and attention that the All-Star Game itself? I'll share a little synergy with the past two prior games that were played in the Pacific Northwest. As the 'first half' concludes, I'll discuss the big series that took place over the weekend (i.e. Braves-Rays, Orioles-Twins, Cubs-Yankees, Mariners-Astros, Reds-Brewers, Mets-Padres, Dodgers-Angels) NOTE: I failed to mention Phillies-Marlins. My error and apologies there. Have no fear. You can get my analysis of that series on my YouTube channel @JAYREELZ. I'll also talk about the top two picks of the MLB Draft as history was made between two teammates (LSU's Paul Skenes & Dylan Crews) drafted 1-2 respectively. (32:07) The NBA has announced their in-season tournament on Saturday night, where it'll culminate in an NBA Cup come December 7th in Las Vegas. Is this a gimmick? Too early to tell? I'll talk about Gregg Popovich's extension with the Spurs, his player Victor Wembanyama has been in the news for a rough outing Friday night, a bounce back performance on Saturday and a brief encounter with Britney Spears, which was much ado about nothing. (41:38) A big trade took place in the NHL over the weekend as former Ottawa Senator Alex DeBrincat was shipped to Detroit for players and picks. Longtime LA King forward, Anze Kopitar re-up for three more years as he'll likely end his career with the only team he played for. (42:50) Some controversy has surfaced at Wimbledon as the fans booed Victoria Azarenka after losing to Elena Svitolina after their match yesterday. Was it warranted? Was it unfair? Plus, a very disappointing defeat to Francis Tiafoe getting served in three quick sets. And the Carlos Alcaraz-Novak Djokovic finals match up is still in tact as we're into the second week of the tournament, hoping that we'll see both players go at it for a Grand Slam title.
