Do you have a book idea, but just don't know where to start? Hey there! Welcome back to the Have Good Ripple Effect podcast. Today, I want to let you in my my story and journey to writing my very own book. Now, calling myself an author feels a bit odd even now but I learned a few tips and tricks along the way to help get you started. :) Let's be honest; the thought of writing a book can be daunting. I mean, who am I to write a book, right? We all have to face that limiting belief but that's just it—each of us has something valuable to share. For me, it was about turning my scattered thoughts on finding joy into something solid that I could hold in my hands. It started with conversations, those little "aha!" moments where people would ask, "Lisa, how do you do it?" That's when I knew I had something worth writing down. With a whole lot of sticky notes and a fantastic book coach who was part therapist, part cheerleader, I started organizing my ideas. Imagine my desk—post-its everywhere, each a tiny insight into creating joy that would soon be chapters. And here's a little secret: I spoke most of my book before I wrote it down. Yep, I used a transcription app to capture my spoken words, turning them into the chapters of my book. (More about that tip in the episode!) If you're sitting on a book idea, thinking it's too big a mountain to climb, I'm here to tell you: just start. It's about getting those ideas out, however messy and unpolished they may be. Each word you jot down or speak into your phone brings you closer to sharing your story with the world. So, if you've ever thought, "Maybe I could write a book," why not start today? Grab that stack of post-its, or open a new note on your phone, and just begin. It's your thoughts, your story, your book. And trust me, it's worth sharing. Hit play now! Supposedly, 81% of Americans — around 228 million people! — think they have a book in them, and, that they should write one.Clearly, books are revered in American society. But what does it take to become one of the few people who actually do it?Nikki Groom is a brand strategist, the host of the Movement Makers podcast, and the author of A Power of Your Own: How to Awaken Your Potential, Experiment With Purpose, And Do Work That Matters. Having worked together in a coaching capacity, Nikki and Dave go behind the scenes to recount her book's slow formulation—and, how the expectation of what it means to write a book oftentimes differs in reality.Overcoming imposter syndrome, shame scripts, self-limiting beliefs, and a world of learned doubts from a society that tells many, especially those from historically marginalized identities, to remain small, Nikki shares how book writing was an invitation to learn, grow, and heal.Hailed as “a force of nature” and “a rising superstar”, Nikki is on a mission to help women entrepreneurs recognize their worthiness, own their power, and amplify their impact—without checking their integrity at the door. In this episode you're going to hear how my guest wrote a book that matters. For a full year, she sat herself down and focused in on this project which is now a significant part of her legacy. If you're considering writing a book or taking on any big and important project, you'll want to hear this. Laura Mae Northrup is an author, educator, somatic psychotherapist, and podcaster. Her book Radical Healership which came out in February is a spiritually-informed and anticapitalist guide for healing practitioners who seek to build a values-driven healing practice. She is the host and creator of the podcast Inside Eyes, an audio series about people using entheogens and psychedelics to heal from sexual trauma. Her work focuses on defining sexual violence through a spiritual and politicized lens, mentoring healing practitioners in creating a meaningful path, and supporting the spiritual integrity of our collective humanity. Here's some of what we talked about: Her reaction when people told her not to make a podcast about people using psychedelics and entheogens to heal sexual trauma How she got offered a book contract to write Radical Healership Writing the book during the pandemic Developing her writing rituals and building those muscles Having brutally honest people read her drafts How she found the time to write her book in a year Maintaining her writing practice now that the book is out Why we sometimes don't write the book or create our work: it's an emotional and spiritual issue Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/175

Gillian offers 3 tips for aspiring book writers on the heels of finishing her first nonfiction book. These concepts will make writing a first book feel both accessible to start AND possible to finish.1. Reduce the scopeTip success in your favor: limit the amount you're setting yourself up to do, AND limit the amount of it that will be new to you. First, figure out your goal and cut it in half. And, when doing anything for the first time, find a way to leverage skills and experience you already have.2. Start anywhereYou can write the first chapter at the very end. Don't break your brain trying to synthesize the whole framework before you've started. Start in the middle, then organize later.3. Incentivize finishingFind ways to lock in the outcome at the beginning, before your confidence wavers. Book a launch party, send your editor a deposit, anything. Get creative!Gillian's first book, 10,000 Doors: Finding your Life's Purpose Through Writing launches May 21, 2022. The Fat-Burning Man Show by Abel James: The Future of Health & Performance
How much time have you spent outside today? Hopefully, you're outside right now. But if you're not, I just want to say it's more important than ever to get outdoors, breathe some fresh air, take a break and enjoy some sunshine. But according to a survey by the EPA, the average American spends 93% of their time indoors, either in enclosed buildings or enclosed vehicles. Connection to nature shouldn't be something that's seen as dispensable, something that we can have or not have. It's an essential part of who we are. That indoor air is stuffy and terrible. There's a lot of off-gassing in cars, rooms, carpets, paints, things like that. And breathing that bad air can actually shave years off your life. So, to help us sort all of this out and keep things in perspective, we're here with one of my very good friends and former cross-country teammate from back in high school, Mr. Will McDonough. Will is a dad of three, a runner, writer and teacher who never stops moving. And today he's here to share with us the importance of systemization, letter writing, and getting outdoors. On this show with Will McDonough, you're about to learn: How to create time for your passions, even if you have 3 kids What it takes to write your first book or two How to run fast, even in your Tom Brady years The unique challenges facing the next generation of health nuts And tons more... Let's go hang out with Will.
What will you leave behind after you die? Sure, you'll leave memories in the mind of your loved ones, things you made and even businesses you built, but will your beliefs and ideas last? That's why I believe that everyone should write a book. In today's episode, I explain “why” behind becoming an author and the “how” of writing your first book. I promise it's easier than it appears—and more valuable than you could ever imagine. If you want to leave a never-ending legacy, press play now.
