Richard Ingersoll is the leading expert on America's teaching force. He examines teaching as a job, teachers as employees, and schools as workplaces. He frequently presents information to policymakers at the national, state, and local levels. Richard's research is internationally recognised; he was cited by President Clinton in a number of speeches announcing his teacher recruitment and training initiatives, and President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He has published over 100 articles, reports, chapters, and essays on topics such as the management and organization of schools; accountability and control in schools; and teacher supply, demand, shortages, and turnover. In this wide-ranging discussion, we talked about many things, including: Why authors John Goldsworthy and Kingsley William Amis have had such an impact on his life. Why he believes that there isn't a teacher shortage in America, rather it is a retention and turnover issue. The importance of challenging convention and assumptions with empirical and quantifiable data. The role of management, organizational and school culture Professor Ingersol was a delight to interview and his body and scope of works are simply breathtaking. I hope that you get as much out of this discussion that I did. Some teachers are uncomfortable working with grade-level “teams” or in PLC's as they believe that their voice and choice is limited with some decision that we all need to do the same thing. Steve suggests, “As a member of a PLC, a teacher can agree that the team will learn, plan, and work together to achieve agreed upon student learning outcomes. This does not mean that everyone is doing the same thing the same way.” A coach's question about time for conferencing with teachers is also included. View visuals and additional information here. In Episode 23 of The Staffroom, Chey and Pav revisit the #EducationNeverDies Twitter chat they moderated a few days prior. The chat was centered around Teacher Voice - how to amplify it, why it is meaningful, what areas of the school do teachers feel voice is most meaningful. The chat was highly successful, organized by the @EduNeverDies group of educators, focused on developing a culture of dialogue and conversation amongst all on Twitter. Chey and Pav found that there were three themes that emerged from the chat. The first one was the notion that Teachers want their voices heard in regards to student advocacy. Chey discussed that he found many teachers felt it was necessary for them to exercise their voices in order to help students get the resources and supports they need in order to succeed. The students needed teachers to advocate and be there for them to be able to thrive. Pav discussed next that teachers felt they needed their voices heard more so in regards to making changes regarding policy within the school. Teachers felt that there was more of a need to be involved in decision making within the school, and be a part of developing committees, school vision and mission statement, working as a part of staffing committee and developing the scheduling, and so many more areas of the school. Chey and Pav introduced their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Taylor Armstrong from Alabama, who talks about his "Be The Compass" initiative. Taylor is one of the founding members of the "Education Never Dies" group, along with Chey and Pav, and several other incredible educators. Pav comes back to discuss some of the ways that teachers can exemplify their voice with their administrators, since many of them might not feel comfortable with the idea of open forums to voice their opinions. They discuss how teachers can model Voice to their students as well before wrapping up. The unsung heroes and influencers of today’s teachers are the teachers from their own school years. Chances are, there was a teacher along the way whose care, creativity, humor, or persistence inspired them in some way and made them see teaching as a great option. In Episode 3 of Teacher Voice, we asked teachers on the first day of school, “If you could send a message to one of your former teachers, what would you say?” Listen in to hear what these teachers had to say to those teachers who inspired them.
In part 2 of our series, Teacher Voice, we asked educators on their first day of school to pause and reflect on a few questions. In the 15 minutes before the first bell rang signaling the start of a brand new school year, we asked, “What are you confident about, and what’s making you a little nervous?”
Let’s go back to the first day of school. The buzz of children slowly grows louder the minutes before the bell rings, disrupting months of relative silence in the halls. Wearing their brand new back to school outfits, students slam lockers and run to the first class of the day. Or, stumble around in small packs looking for it. But what goes on behind the scenes? Before the bell. Before the bus. When it’s just a teacher sitting in a classroom alone. Every fall, teachers across the country step into their classrooms and prepare for that first day with their students. Before that new class of students walk into that room, there are all sorts of thoughts, anxieties, and other feelings swelling in the mind and body of a teacher. This year, we caught up with a crew of teachers in their classrooms—15 minutes before the kids come pouring in—to ask them to share what they’re feeling. Listen in to hear their thoughts, feelings, and observations from the first day of school.
