Guest interviewer Robizon Khubulashvili is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of San Francisco. His research is at the intersection of theoretical, behavioral, and experimental microeconomics. A common question in his research is, how can we use a user's revealed preferences to improve the performance of online platforms? Robizon has studied this question in two settings: when monetary incentives are missing (an online gaming platform) and when monetary incentives are present (an online gambling platform). His work suggests that heterogeneity among users is an essential consideration in designing better online platforms; that is, a policy benefiting one type of user might harm the other. Author Roger L Di Silvestro is a professional conservationist, a former editor and writer for the National Audubon Society, and also worked for Defenders of Wildlife and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. On this episode of Nature Revisited, Roger discusses the topic of his latest book Return of the Bison, which tells the story of how this symbol of the American West was once almost lost to history and of the continuing journey to bring the bison back from the brink. Weaving in natural history and interesting historical contexts, along with the key role of America's Indigenous people, Roger describes the complex history of the bison's decimation and how a rising awareness of their possible extinction formed the roots of many modern wildlife conservation approaches. Foraging food can be exciting: searching for provisions, maybe discovering some sweet berries or nutty salad greens you've never tried before. Eating wild plants is fun… but if you're not careful, it can kill you.So when we wanted to learn the basics of foraging in Florida, we called Roger L. Hammer. He's an award-winning naturalist, botanist, nature photographer and survivalist instructor for the Discovery Channel reality series Naked and Afraid. He's also the author of several books, including Falcon Guides' Foraging Florida. Before you go gorging on handfuls of leaves from your backyard, you'd be smart to heed Roger's advice. He recently chatted with Dalia about guidelines for foraging legally, ethically and safely.Related episodes:Chef Sean Sherman, The Sioux ChefConscious Cuisine: Rob Greenfield on How to Live without Grocery Stores and RestaurantsThird-Generation Beekeeper Derek Lewis on Food Pollination, Bee Hotels and the Value of the “Sophisticated Little Creatures”

Discernment of spirits used to solely mean "diagnosing" whether someone was led by the Holy Spirit or the enemy. But it's more complicated than that, isn't it? The same person, even holy people, can be influenced by both the Holy Spirit and the enemy. Ignatius of Loyola compiled and systematized the Desert Fathers' tradition of discernment, so that now we understand "discernment of spirits" to mean deciding for oneself or another what must be attributed to the Holy Spirit, and what comes from one's own imagination or the suggestion of the enemy. Because St. Ignatius of Loyola's rules for discernment are so substantial, I have included a simplified version specific to discerning whether we are hearing from the Holy Spirit or not. Frederick Watts came to prominence during the nineteenth century as a lawyer and a railroad company president, but his true interests lay in agricultural improvement and in raising the economic, social, and political standing of Pennsylvania's farmers. After being elected founding president of The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society in 1851, he used his position to advocate vigorously for the establishment of an agricultural college that would employ science to improve farming practices. He went on to secure the charter for the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania, which would eventually become the Pennsylvania State University. This biography explores Watts's role in founding and leading Penn State through its formative years. Watts adroitly directed the school as it was sited, built, and financed, opening for students in 1859. He hired the brilliant Evan Pugh as founding president, who, with Watts, quickly made it the first successful agricultural college in America. But for all his success in launching the institution, Watts nearly brought it to the brink of closure through a series of ruinous presidential appointments that led to an abandonment of the land-grant focus on agriculture and engineering. Roger L. Williams served as Associate Vice President and Executive Director of the Penn State Alumni Association and as Affiliate Associate Professor in Penn State's Higher Education Program.
