I'm excited to share my conversation with Stuart Phillips, where we dive deep into muscle building science - a topic that generates endless debate on social media. As someone who struggles with gaining muscle despite consistent training, I was shocked when Dr. Christopher Gardner told me muscle growth is "10% nutrition and 90% exercise." This contradicted everything I thought I knew, so I had to bring in Stu - widely considered the foremost expert on muscle development - to separate fact from fiction. The most fascinating insight for me was discovering that effective muscle building can happen across a wide range of repetition schemes - from as low as 3 reps to as high as 25 reps per set. This challenges the rigid "strength/hypertrophy/endurance" continuum that's dominated fitness advice for decades. I'm excited to share my conversation with Dr. Scott Sherr, where we dive deep into methylene blue - a compound you've probably seen all over social media lately (those blue tongues!). As someone whose primary research focuses on Alzheimer's disease, I was fascinated to explore the science behind this molecule that dates back to the 1870s and was actually the first drug registered with the FDA in 1897. The most fascinating insight for me was learning how methylene blue can serve as an electron acceptor in our mitochondria - essentially functioning as a substitute for oxygen when our cells are under stress. This explains why it shows promise for everything from traumatic brain injury to cognitive enhancement and even as a potential alternative to stimulant medications. If you're interested in optimizing brain performance, understanding mitochondrial health, or simply curious about this blue compound that's suddenly everywhere, this episode provides both the scientific foundation and practical applications you need. Alzheimer's doesn't just “happen” later in life—it's a slow, silent process that can begin decades before symptoms appear. In this solo episode, we challenge the myth that Alzheimer's is purely genetic, and break down what the science really says about your risk. I explore the role of the APOE4 gene, how it interacts with lifestyle and metabolic health, and why women—especially during and after menopause—may face a unique vulnerability. Most importantly, I introduce three cutting-edge blood tests that can detect the earliest signs of Alzheimer's, long before memory loss sets in. We'll also talk prevention: from blood sugar and insulin resistance to inflammation, hormone balance, and brain energy metabolism—everything you can start doing right now to safeguard your cognitive future. This is more than a conversation about Alzheimer's—it's a roadmap for taking control of your brain health. SponsorsA huge thank you to my sponsors for supporting this episode. Can AI ever replace the human connection at the heart of therapy, or are we losing something essential in the process? I'm sitting down with my friend and colleague Dr. Sue Varma to talk about something that's been on my mind. Artificial intelligence is making its way into mental health, offering quick answers and structured advice. But can it truly replace the depth of human interaction? Sue shares why the connection between a therapist and client isn't just helpful. It's the foundation of real change. We also dig into some common misconceptions about therapy. Many people think it's just talking instead of an active process of insight and growth. Sue introduces her “four M's of mental health”—mindfulness, movement, meaningful engagement, and mastery. These simple habits help us stay grounded in an increasingly digital world. As AI continues to reshape mental health care, how do we embrace new tools without losing what makes therapy work? Let's get into it. One year ago this month — February 20, to be exact — the world was introduced to Dr. Sue Varma's landmark book Practical Optimism: The Art, Science, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being. Its tagline certainly speaks to our modern times: “A practical program rooted in optimism to help you live fully and joyfully in an imperfect, turbulent world.” Yes, please! Sign me up. Sue has a fascinating story — she is a board-certified psychiatrist with a private practice in Manhattan, and was the first medical director and attending psychiatrist at the World Trade Center Mental Health Program. Through this experience, Sue worked directly with civilian and first-responder survivors in the aftermath of the attacks of September 11, 2001, and through this, she saw both devastation as well as resilience and growth. Through this experience, she asked herself how some people survived and even thrived, despite immense challenges, and how can we optimize what we have control over and block out stressors as much as possible? That was the genesis of Practical Optimism, the book we are discussing today. This book combines Sue's own personal experiences with the latest research in psychology, psychiatry, medicine, and neuroscience, and teaches us that cultivating an optimistic mindset makes all the difference — and is something that can be done by anyone, even if you're not a naturally born optimist. Sue has eight pillars to help us cultivate practical optimism, and her research shows that optimists aren't just happier, but they're also physically healthier, too. Optimism is a practice, something we can all get better at each day, and Sue's book teaches us how. If you're looking to boost your happiness, health, longevity, resilience, and success — and who among us isn't? — then today's conversation is tailor made for you. Dr. Varma is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York University and teaches both medical students and residents; she's also a highly sought after and award-winning national medical contributor for major news outlets, and today we talk about topics like kintsugi — totally fascinating — as well as healthy pride, cultivating an aloneness practice, and how, in her words from the book, “It doesn't matter whether the glass is half full or half empty — it's always refillable.” So good. Practical Optimism: The Art, Science, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being by Dr. Sue Varma

There is power in having a positive mindset, even if you have a negative perspective right now.No, I'm not talking about toxic positivity, which encourages people to always look on the bright side (often ignoring or glossing over loss, pain, grief, etc.).I'm talking about practical optimism, a concept I learned about from the book Practical Optimism by Dr. Sue Varma.Practical optimism is a way to change your mindset that holds space for negative feelings and experiences, while equipping you with skills to deal with what you are facing and even possibly turn your challenges into opportunities. This may seem impossible, especially if you are dealing with mental health challenges as a result of debilitating chronic skin rashes. But I encourage you to give this episode a listen with an open mind!Joining me to discuss this concept and how to develop a positive mindset is Dr. Sue Varma who is a distinguished psychiatrist and cognitive behavioral therapist based in New York City. With over two decades of private practice experience, she has made significant contributions to the field of mental health, including serving as the pioneering Medical Director and Psychiatrist for the esteemed 9/11 mental health program at NYU for which she was awarded the Mayoral Proclamation. She's also the author of the book Practical Optimism: The Art, Science, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being.In This Episode:The devastating situation where Dr. Varma discovered optimismAre optimism and a positive mindset genetic?Toxic positivity practical optimismPessimism vs skepticism: what's the difference?Which personality type are you?The eight pillars of practical optimismHow to change your mindset even if you feel like you are “broken”How to know if you're emotionally dysregulatedBenefits of committing to therapyQuotes“A lot of times people dismiss optimism as a variety of things. It's woo-woo thinking, it's pollyannaish, it's very naive, it's toxic positivity, or it's something you're either born with or not. So why do we bother studying it? And what I found instead was that optimism, yes, there is a genetic component, but the reality is that only 25% of it is genetic. Seventy-five percent of it is learned.”“Practical optimism…says, ‘I invite space for your loss and your grief, but I'm also going to equip you with skills that will help you deal with what you're facing right now, but also in the future, and help you prevent some of the bad things that might be coming your way.'”LinksFind Dr. Varma online | InstagramGet Dr. Varma's book Practical Optimism HERE!Healthy Skin Show ep. 131: Mindset: What To Do When Nothing Seems To Help Your RashesHealthy Skin Show ep. 361: How To Change Your Mindset (So Your Skin Doesn't Control Your Mood) w/ Brad Bizjack

Imagine being at the forefront of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's research, holding hope for millions of patients. That's where Eliezer Masliah stood—a top neuroscientist and key figure at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), responsible for overseeing billions in funding intended to push groundbreaking research on these devastating diseases forward. But things weren't as they seemed.Recent investigations, including one published in Science (Vol 385, Issue 6716), have raised alarming questions about Masliah's research. Over 100 of his studies may contain falsified data, including duplicated or manipulated images, claiming to reveal critical insights into how Alzheimer's and Parkinson's impact the brain. If this sounds eerily familiar, you're right. Just two years ago, another scandal rocked the Alzheimer's research world. Sylvain Lesné's 2006 Nature paper was considered a landmark in Alzheimer's research—until 2022, when it was revealed that the paper was tainted by manipulated data. That revelation sent shockwaves through the scientific community, throwing years of research and drug development into doubt. And now, we're facing a similar situation again. The implications of these new allegations against Masliah are massive. His work has shaped entire fields of study, influencing experimental treatments like the Parkinson's drug prasinezumab. But with these revelations, years of research and billions of dollars in funding hang in the balance. What's most heartbreaking? Real people—those battling Alzheimer's and Parkinson's—are caught in the middle of this scandal. They've been placing their hopes in breakthroughs, trusting science to provide answers and relief. If the very research supporting their treatments is compromised, the cost isn't just in lost time and money—it's a betrayal of the trust placed in the system by millions of patients and their families. We have to demand better. Science, and the people depending on it, deserve better. The Neuro Athletics Newsletter Instagram: @louisanicola_Twitter : @louisanicola_YouTube: @Louisa NicolaThe Neuro Experience Podcast is proud to have hosted: Dr Andrew Huberman, Dr Gabrielle Lyon, Dr Layne Norton, Thomas DeLauer, Shawn Stevenson, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Saad Alam, Uma Naidoo, Dr. Lanna Cheuck, Angela Lee Pucci, Jillian Turecki, Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, Dr. Darren Candow, Dr. Sue Varma, Evy Poumpouras, Dr Casey Means, Renee Deehan, Dr Chris Palmer, Dr Charles Brenner, Dr Joe Zundell

Dr. Vivian Chen, a passionate advocate for recognizing the impact of environmental toxins on health, has a rich background in medicine, specializing in internal medicine and family medicine. Her journey into environmental health was personal, driven by her daughter's health challenges which were linked to dietary allergies and, she suspects, environmental toxins. This personal experience shifted her focus towards environmental toxins and their broader implications onhealth. In the podcast, Dr. Chen discusses the pervasive issue of aluminum exposure through everyday items like cookware and antacids, highlighting its potential to cause oxidative stress and DNA damage at the cellular level. She notes the broader health implications, such as increased risksof chronic diseases like Alzheimer's. The conversation extends to endocrine disruptors andobesogens, chemicals that interfere with hormonal activities and metabolic processes, emphasizing their significant yet underacknowledged impact on health.Get $260 off LUMEBOX red light therapywww.thelumebox.com/neuro Sponsors: Maui Nui Venison - Use code NEURO to get 20% off your first order of fresh venison, jerky, broth, and ‘ohana subscription while supplies last. https://mauinuivenison.com/pages/NEUROZocDoc- Use code NEURO - https://www.zocdoc.com/neuroConnect with Vivian:InstagramLumebox: Chapters:00:00:00 - Importance of Avoiding Endocrine Disruptors00:02:36 - Aluminum in Antacids and its Potential Health Risks00:05:21 - The Dangers of Aluminum in Antacids and Cookware00:08:06 - Effects of Aluminum in our Blood00:10:42 - The importance of hormones and the impact of environmental toxins00:13:12 - Obesogens and their Impact on Weight Gain00:15:52 - The Role of Obesogens in Weight Gain and Obesity00:18:38 - Disrupting Hormones and Health Compromises00:21:31 - The Impact of Decreasing Estrogen00:24:26 - The Impact of Plastic Exposure on Overall Health00:27:10 - The Risk of Microplastics in the Body00:29:46 - The Dangers of Plastic Contamination00:32:41 - The Leeching of Chemicals00:35:18 - The Importance of Liver and Gut in Toxin Elimination00:37:51 - Importance of Fiber for Proper Digestion00:40:37 - The Dose Makes the Poison00:43:21 - Challenges in Studying Environmental Toxins00:45:46 - The Future of Medical Tests: Measuring Detox Organs?00:48:32 - Dr. Chen's Daughter's Medical Journey00:51:06 - The Link Between Environmental Toxins and Allergies00:53:40 - The Benefits of Red Light Therapy00:56:18 - Study on Skin Elasticity and Fine Lines00:58:59 - Portable Red Light Therapy Devices01:01:27 - Where to Find More InformationThe Neuro Athletics Newsletter Instagram: @louisanicola_Twitter : @louisanicola_YouTube: @Louisa NicolaThe Neuro Experience Podcast is proud to have hosted: Dr Andrew Huberman, Dr Gabrielle Lyon, Dr Layne Norton, Thomas DeLauer, Shawn Stevenson, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Saad Alam, Uma Naidoo, Dr. Lanna Cheuck, Angela Lee Pucci, Jillian Turecki, Dr. Jordan Feigenbaum, Dr. Darren Candow, Dr. Sue Varma, Evy Poumpouras, Dr Casey Means, Renee Deehan, Dr Chris Palmer, Dr Charles Brenner, Dr Joe Zundell

On today's solo episode....Neurodegeneration and brain aging affect millions worldwide, with numbers expected to triple by 2050. While pharmaceuticals offer limited solutions, lifestyle choices, especially exercise and diet, are vital for brain health.Study 1: Chronic Inflammation and Cognitive Performance The CARDIA study tracked inflammation in young adults and found chronic inflammation can impair midlife cognitive performance. Participants with high CRP levels were significantly more likely to have poor processing speed and executive function. Early management of inflammation is crucial for cognitive health.Study 2: Smoking and Cognitive Decline A Nature Communications study of 32,000 adults revealed smoking accelerates cognitive decline by up to 85% over 10 years. Smokers who adopted healthy behaviors like exercise and socializing had cognitive decline rates similar to non-smokers, highlighting the importance of quitting smoking and healthy living.Study 3: Diets Rich in Omega-3s and Antioxidants A study found older adults with diets rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and vitamins show slower brain aging and better cognitive function. Nutrients like alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E, and choline are crucial for brain health, emphasizing the role of diet in cognitive maintenance.Sponsors:ZocDoc- Use code NEURO - https://www.zocdoc.com/neuroBioProtein Technology - Use code LOUISA to save 10% - https://www.bioproteintech.com/shop/biopro-plus-cortisleepStudies:1. With so many conflicting views on which nutrition route to take towards staving off Alzheimer's disease, there is too much confusion so Max provides a great overview of what route to take according to clinical data.Alzheimer's disease, one of the most dreaded conditions of old age, is unfortunately made even more of a burden by a gene called ApoE4. With two copies of this gene, you can double your risk of developing this devastating condition, proving that life isn't always fair. Even if you don't have the gene, aging still increases your chances, making it seem like no matter what you do, Alzheimer's will still creep up on you. But don't lose hope - animal studies have found that heat shock proteins can at least offer some protection against it. Distractions while driving can be dangerous. Good drivers know they need to minimize distractions. However, some things that are intended to deliberately distract drivers, such as billboards. And it turns out certain types of billboards can be REALLY distracting. Listen as I explain. And why do some people see the glass half empty, and some see it half full? It turns out that the science of optimism is fascinating and there is a lot we can do to become more optimistic about the world and our lives. Joining me to explain how is Dr. Sue Varma. When you search online for something whether it's a movie on Netflix or a screwdriver on Amazon, the choices you see are determined by an algorithm. In other words, you don't see every screwdriver in the world, you see the ones the algorithm has determined you might like. While that may be good for a screwdriver, it may be very limiting when it comes to other things. Here to explain why this is important is Kyle Chayka. He is a staff writer at The New Yorker, where he writes a column on digital technology and the impact of the Internet and social media on culture and he is author of the book, Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture (https://amzn.to/4bSgpj6). Everyone knows that it is dangerous to drive if you have been drinking. However, driving when you're sick may be even more dangerous. Listen as I reveal how even a slight cold can affect your body and put you at risk when you drive. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2283323 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!
