In this episode, Pastor Tim Bayly is joined by his son, Joseph (Senior Pastor at Christ Church in Cincinnati), and son-in-law, Lucas Weeks (College and Administrative Pastor at Trinity Reformed Church in Bloomington, IN) to discuss parenting. We often think that our parenting is a failure if we have to resort to authority. That attitude is foolishness and an abandonment of God's rules for parenting. Our fears and modern psychologists have trained us to believe that authority is antithetical to having your child's heart. We must be reminded that if we intend to hold on to our children, obedience to God is the only way. No one would deny that mothers and fathers have duties regarding their children, but many are willing to dispute that children have duties regarding their parents. Parents ought to serve and love their children, but also children ought to serve and love their parents. ***Mentions during the show:First, the podcast starts out talking about this book: Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peersby Gordon Neufeld and Gabor MatéSecond, we mention this book:Shepherding a Child's Heartby Ted TrippThird, I read from this book:The Thing (the chapter I read from is titled, “The Drift from Domesticity”)by G. Hidden sources of stress — and how to beat them. Also: the myth of normal, the necessity of being disillusioned, and the disutility of comparing your suffering.Description: There's so much to be grateful for in modern medicine. We can all agree that we would not do as well in a world with no Advil or dentistry. And yet, our guest today, who is a renowned doctor, says modern medicine is overlooking something crucial: the pernicious impact that modern living has on our minds and bodies. In other words, we are surrounded by these hidden societal and structural sources of stress and we aren't thinking about how to treat and prevent these factors that are degrading our happiness and our immune systems. In this episode I get to talk with my friend, Leslie Martino, wife, mom to 4, speaker, author and curator of relationships. I like to say that cultivating relationships is one of Leslie's superpowers. In what is becoming a trend, I was moved to tears multiple times in this episode. Talking with Leslie will do that to you. She is so calm, loving and warm. She is also honest and says the hard things. I absolutely loved our time together and I know you will too. Here's some more of what we talked about: I recommended this book to Leslie when I found out she loves miniature things: The Borrowers. Get the whole series here. We recently read this book in our kid book club: learn how to start your own kid, or adult, book club here. Leslie loves trying new things, which shows her kids they don't have to fear failure and that they are free to be a learner. Learn more about this idea here. Leslie and her husband intentionally pursued connection with their kids from the beginning, but she had a key insight early on: making mistakes as parents was their biggest motivator to pursue relationship with their kids. She realized that if she didn't make changes she'd destroy relationship rather than foster it: “I can do just as much good as I can do damage. I can be better.” Another key insight from Leslie into cultivating relationship with our kids: “Look at your children with a lens of gratitude” rather than as people we want to shape and change. A key word stands out as Leslie describes the way her parents cultivated connection with her as a child: available. Leslie's mother was physically and emotionally available. Cultivating a strong relationship with parents as an adult child has a lot to do with: forgiveness. Gratitude also changes a fractured relationship Leslie reminds us to include our parents: invite them because they might be wondering “where is my place in my adult child's life?” Everybody likes to be invited. A book that reminds us that connecting with our kids does not have to be complicated is: Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. More ideas for creating simple connection points with your kids can be found on Leslie's free downloadable 30 Days of Connection Calendar More tips for creating connection with your kids: connection can be body to body—hugs and squeezes. Be in their physical space—hang out in their room and talk to them. Make eye contact during a conversation. Invite kids into your space too—like cooking with your kids, telling them about the book you're reading, sharing your prayer requests, inviting them on errands, helping them with their chores. Give them your time. Give them your attention. We need to make sure we're seeing our kids! Leslie tells us she's chasing joy right now by learning about neuroplasticity and engaging in activities that grow and change her brain. Be sure to visit Leslie's website here to find more of her work. Follow along with her in Insta here. And don't forget to look for her book, coming this summer! Don't forget to like and subscribe to this podcast, and I'd be so very grateful if you leave a review of the podcast on iTunes. Reviews are incredibly helpful to me as a new podcaster. Thank you for listening and being part of my team. I love you guys! Greta

Chapter 1 Reveal the true moral of the Hold On to Your Kids bookHold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers is a book written by Dr. Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté. In this book, Neufeld and Maté explore the challenges parents face in modern society, where the influence of peers can sometimes outweigh the influence of parents. They delve into the importance of attachment between parents and children, and how to strengthen that bond to ensure children can navigate the world confidently and securely. The authors provide insight and guidance on various topics, including discipline, education, and technology, with the aim of helping parents reclaim their role as the primary influence in their children's lives.Chapter 2 Shall we Read the Hold On to Your Kids book ?Opinions on the book "Hold On to Your Kids" by Gordon Neufeld may differ among readers. However, it generally receives positive reviews and is considered a valuable resource for parents. The book argues that in the modern world, children are increasingly influenced by peer culture rather than their parents, leading to various problems such as early sexualization, bullying, and detachment from family. Neufeld offers practical advice to help parents regain their authority, strengthen their connection with their children, and promote healthy development. It is recommended for parents looking to deepen their understanding of parent-child relationships and find effective strategies for raising secure and resilient children.Chapter 3 Key Points of the Hold On to Your Kids book"Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers" is a book written by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté. It explores the importance of strong parental attachments and the impact of peer orientation on children. The book argues that traditional parenting is being undermined by societal and cultural shifts that prioritize peer relationships over parental connection. Neufeld suggests that peer orientation, defined as children looking to their peers for direction and validation instead of their parents, leads to various negative consequences, including adolescents engaging in risky behaviors and struggling with emotional and mental health issues.Neufeld proposes that in order to counter the influence of peers, parents need to establish and maintain a secure attachment with their children. He emphasizes the importance of a parent's role as a guide, mentor, and provider of emotional security. The book provides practical strategies and advice for parents to strengthen their connection with their children and nurture their attachment.Neufeld also explores the impact of technology, media, and the educational system on children's attachment to their parents. He discusses the role of parents in buffering the negative effects of these external influences and encourages them to provide a healthy and balanced environment for their children.Overall, "Hold On to Your Kids" presents a compelling argument for the crucial role parents play in their children's lives. It addresses the challenges and pressures faced by parents in the modern world and offers practical guidance on how to establish and maintain a strong parent-child relationship.Chapter 4 the Hold On to Your Kids book Author Bio The book "Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers" is authored by Dr. Gordon Neufeld, a developmental psychologist, and Gabor Maté, a physician. The book was first published in 2004.Apart from "Hold On to Your Kids," Dr. Gordon Neufeld has written several other books,...

Today we embark on a profound journey exploring the challenges of parenting a child experiencing Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD). Alan and I delve into the emotional rollercoaster that parents often experience when their child exhibits signs of ROGD, including stress, pain, and confusion, before embarking on Alan's experience pursuing psychedelic treatment for complex PTSD to alleviate the secondary impact of his trauma symptoms on his family. Alan shares his transformative experience with meditation, the relationship between meditation and spirituality, how spirituality can provide solace and guidance during challenging times, and how meditation can help parents build emotional confidence. We also delve into the connection between psychedelics and meditation in the context of healing and personal growth, Alan shares how insights uncovered during his psychedelic journeys inform how he navigates ROGD parenting. For those interested in this therapeutic path, we provide practical (not medical) advice on using psychedelics safely and effectively, addressing matters of harm reduction, micro dosing and guided journeys, along with important do's and don'ts of set and setting. Drawing parallels between the dynamics of cults and certain aspects of the transgender movement is a crucial part of today's discussion where emotional and psychological traits can make individuals vulnerable to both. This week's episode offers a comprehensive investigation into the challenges parents of ROGD children face, the role of trauma, and the transformative power of meditation and psychedelic therapy. Guests: Katie McDonald, Julie Hildebrand, and Gabe Boyd The book we all read is titled Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More than Peers written by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D., and Gabor Mate, M.D. This is NOT a recommendation of this book, but an in-depth exploration of the concepts of “attachment” parenting that are raised and an exploration of the idea that youth need to be more connected to their parents than to their peers. The “family dinner” is one of the strategies for building a meaningful relationship and connection between parents and children - don't take this important concept for granted. Bedtime routines can also be tremendously valuable in establishing and maintaining a meaningful connection with your child. “It takes a saint to not be alienated, but with our peer-oriented children, sainthood may be what we are called to. If that seems unnatural, it's because it is unnatural” (HOTYK). Establishing a meaningful relationship with your kids isn't just UNnatural, it's SUPERnatural!!! John 17 parenting - as Jesus prayed and let his disciples hear how he spoke to his Father about them, we need to let our children hear us pray for them, about them, with them…so they can hear what we think about them! Parents, be careful of “sleepovers” with friends - your children can learn a lot of bad things at homes and with “friends” who are not on the same page as you are! Parents, understand the incredible impact that other voices can have on the lives of your children - coaches, teachers, pastors, etc…and if you're one of those individuals, make sure you take that responsibility seriously to speak life into those around you! Parents, our primary responsibility is to raise our children so that they are connected to and find their identity in Christ! If you're connected to Christ and His larger story for your life, you'll want to share that with your kids…and your kids will want to be a part of something bigger than themselves! Special shout out to Jared Wood for allowing us to use his music - check him out at JaredWoodMusic!
What are the dangers of a child being attached to peers more than to their parents? Whomever a child is most attached to will have the greatest impact on their lives. Peers are not accountable for their impact on your children - you, as parents, are! “When peers replace parents as the dominant attachment figures, they become our child's models without, of course, assuming any responsibility for the end result” (HOTYK). “Sex becomes an instrument of peer attachment. They are using sex with their peers to try to satisfy their hunger for connection and for affection” (HOTYK). The book is honest about the power of sex to connect two individuals - and the pain that comes with separation when that relationship or activity ends. Bullying wouldn't be that big of a deal if the child is more concerned with what his father (in our case, our Heavenly Father) thinks of us! When you lose your attachment with your children, they'll go and attach and listen to someone else. Getting that attachment relationship back with your children will take time and significant effort. As parents, do we “over schedule” our children? Attachment isn't proximity, it's intentional investment into the lives of our children. “Children don't need friends, they need parents, grandparents, adults who will assume the responsibility to hold on to them” (HOTYK). A “friend” is someone who has your best interest in mind - who is willing to speak truth into your life and make whatever sacrifice is necessary to help you be the best version of yourself. Your children need friends like this and so do you! Special shout out to Jared Wood for allowing us to use his music - check him out at JaredWoodMusic!
“Attachment” parenting addresses the importance of the relationship between parents and their children as well as children and other things, especially the connection of children with their peers. Parents who are looking to foster and encourage peer relationships might need to reconsider the importance of these relationships - the MOST important relationship/connection that your children need to have secure is the relationship with you as their parent! Parents, we should want our children to “attach” to us IF we are attached to Christ - as Paul said, Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). Josh McDowell, “Rules without relationship leads to rebellion.” When a child is acting unruly, these behavioral issues are really, at their core, relationship issues. Benefit of having your children at PCA is that your child should have multiple attachments of like-minded, Christ-centered people in their lives! The secret of parenting is not what the parent does, but who the parent is, in the life of a child - that's a very profound point in this book! In this episode, I speak with Dr. Gabor Maté, a renowned author and speaker about ADHD and its impact on people's lives.Trigger warning: Because I'm dedicated to helping as many individuals with ADHD as I can, I push myself to the limit and brought someone to this space who has been a contrarian in the ADHD world specifically, in the origins of ADHD. I'll leave it up to you to decide which viewpoint you agree with. But what is noteworthy is that we can all learn from different viewpoints as we continue to explore our experiences with ADHD, what is, what isn't and how it shows up for each of us. You don't have to agree with my guest's viewpoints to reach the benefits of what he shares during this episode. Trauma is a very real topic for individuals and up to 70% of adults have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Do I agree with everything in this episode? This episode is a powerful and important conversation exposing the increasingly devastating impact of the conflation between gender identity theory and the experience of living with gender dysphoria. In this episode, Sasha & Stella speak with Rose who wishes to remain anonymous. Rose is the mother of two young sons and lives in the United States. In August of 2022, she published the piece “True Believer” on the Parents with Inconvenient Truths around Trans (PITT) Substack. She wrote “True Believer” to share her story and help other parents and concerned adults who are struggling to understand the dynamics underneath the current phenomenon of transgender children. Rose's first-hand perspective is unique in that she and her partner were "affirming parents" — they thought their four-year-old son could be transgender and chose to socially transition him, only to realize they were wrong.Rose's story is incredibly important because, at its core, it's a simple case of the best of intentions garnering devastating impact. This is a humanized account of the pain, distress, confusion, fear, and regret that so many families are facing in the wake of doing what (“experts” told them) was best for their child.Links:Rose's original piece published on Parents with Inconvenient Truths around Trans (PITT) Substack:“True Believer” — https://pitt.substack.com/p/true-believerRose's appearance episode of Triggernometry podcast — https://pdst.fm/e/audioboom.com/posts/8242143.mp3?modified=1675602742&source=rss&stitched=1Rose's follow-up piece on PITT provides further reflections on the Triggernometry interview:“A Return to Reality” — https://pitt.substack.com/p/a-return-to-realityHold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peersby Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté, MD https://www.amazon.com/Hold-Your-Kids-Parents-Matter/dp/0375760288/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1680628544&sr=8-1Eliza Mondagreen: https://twitter.com/elizamondegreen/status/1625925867053383700Neufeld Institute — https://neufeldinstitute.org/resources/free/Dr. Gordon Neufeld — “Becoming the Answer a Child Needs”A Map of Detransition Island — https://genspect.org/infographics/#island“Dear Theodosia”, from Hamilton (the Musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda)https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=TKpJjdKcjeo“The Way Forward Is with a Broken Heart” — Quote/Book by Alice WalkerIf you liked this episode, more episodes you might find interesting:“1 — Trans: Identity vs Dysphoria”
Exploring the causes of sickness, author and renowned physician Dr. Gabor Maté explores how the trauma ingrained in modern society manifests as illness and pulls us away from our authentic selves, and how we can lessen our attachment to “normalcy” in order to foster both individual and collective healing and create a more equitable and awakened future. Tune in to Point of Relation — The Undeniable Link of Illness & Wellbeing to Our Collective Ecosystem with Dr. Gabor Maté. Key Points To Discover: ✔️ In the revolutionary book "The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture," Dr. Gabor Maté argues that our culture has become so disconnected from the real needs of people that what we assume to be "normal" is, in fact, neither healthy nor natural. Dr. Maté distinctly articulates that "normal" is a myth. He presents that every individual's response to conditions, such as addictions, depression, and physical illnesses, are, in fact, normal responses to the abnormal social and environmental conditions they face. Therefore, the conditions that are the source of the abnormality need to be addressed instead of the individual. ✔️ We are co-creators of our reality. Connection is a necessity for human life that, when unfulfilled, brings about suffering. In the modern world, where we push and strive for the attainment of the individual, we must remember that we can only exist within the collective experience. ✔️ Do you feel that true healing is impossible for you? Dr. Maté shares that in his journey, he too believed that no matter how hard he tried, he was incapable of completely healing his pains. But he believes that healing is possible for all of us. In his words, “In order to accomplish that healing, we have to really come face to face with the depth and extent of the trauma in our world, not to despair over it, but precisely so that we can gain agency.” ✔️ The illness of an individual is the manifestation of a collective phenomenon. When an individual becomes ill, the Lakota tradition teaches that the community extends gratefulness and that sickness manifests to uncover shared dysfunction. This gives way to the belief that "Your healing is our healing." Dr. Maté emphasizes the traditional wisdom that works with interdependent medicine is just as applicable to our modern world as it was in ancient times. Yet, sadly, medical practice often fails to acknowledge the science that confirms this. --------------- Dr. Gabor Maté is an internationally renowned speaker highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, childhood development, and the relationship between stress and illness. Parenting is a challenging journey, full of uncertainty and self-doubt. It can be hard to know if you are doing the right thing when it comes to parenting your kids and loving them on an individual level to ensure all their needs are met both emotionally and physically. Welcome back to the Family Brand Podcast! Melissa here for another show and If you agree with the statement above, this episode will blow your mind. Fair warning before you dive into today's content, you may want to grab a pin and paper or your digital equivalent so you can take notes. This episode is packed with valuable tips all parents need to hear! Hit play to meet the one and only Crystal Haitsma. Crystal is known as the “parenting coach” and talks with us about how to trust yourself as a parent. Crystal has a unique approach to parenting and I was excited to hear more about it face-to-face. I stumbled upon Crystal's Instagram and after scrolling through a few posts I had to know more. I was immediately drawn to her connection-based parenting method. Crystal explains that the connection-based parenting method is all about building a strong relationship with your children and It's about being present, listening actively, and understanding your child's perspective. It's not about being tyrannical or controlling but rather about being a guide for your child and learning how to help and love them in the best way possible. For most of us, this approach to parenting is 100% the opposite of what we experienced growing up. Learning how to parent in a new way can seem daunting at first or your temptation may be to run out and grab every book you can find on parenting and self-development you can find. Either way, you'll learn during our conversation that building a better relationship with your child may be easier than you think. Why? Because you have everything you need to succeed inside you. Crystal reminds us of the fundamental truths of self-care and how if we take care of ourselves we can better serve our kids and families. You'll also hear her advice on how to trust your intuition, how to overcome the battles in your mind, how to not repeat the pain of your past and so much more. It's okay to make mistakes and remember that being a perfect parent is impossible. However, we know there is always room for growth! He is also the co-author of Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. His works have been published internationally in more than thirty languages.Dr. Maté generously shares his deep understanding of childhood trauma, vulnerability, grief, and emotional distress. He explains what real trauma is and how time doesn't necessarily lead to healing, how vulnerability is ingrained in us since we are young and the importance of these formative years to mold our emotional health, and the societal expectations we always try to meet but have never truly given us real fulfillment. We also exchange thoughts on dealing with grief, how we struggle to identify with the people we look up to, and how childhood experience varies for every child even when they are raised in a similar environment.Trauma is a wound that has not fully healed which can be triggered at any point in our life so it matters that we are able to find a common ground and stay firm in what can give us healing, emotional stability, and happiness. What We Discuss:00:00:00 Intro00:03:12 How do you define trauma?00:06:32 How is healing defined?00:08:45 Time itself does not heal emotional wounds00:11:38 We are all born vulnerable00:13:55 The inherent expectations we all have00:20:00 The societal standards we try to live up to 00:25:15 It's not possible to love kids too much00:29:35 Grief is essential for life00:32:19 When the past dominates the present reactions00:35:16 There is no healthy identification00:42:11 Why are we set on things staying the same00:44:38 No two children have the same childhood00:50:19 The difference between loneliness and being alone00:53:54 How do you see human nature?01:02:24 Suffering has to be acknowledged01:06:27 Getting closure and start moving on01:10:04 Spirituality becomes commoditized01:15:56 Dr. Maté on Final Five:Episode ResourcesGabor Maté | WebsiteGabor Maté | InstagramGabor Maté | TwitterGabor Maté | BooksThe Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic CultureDo you want to meditate daily with me? Today's episode features a conversation with Ashleigh Warner, holistic family psychologist and the woman behind @raisinghumanskind. Ashleigh's teachings on mindful parenting have blown me away. She shares so many tools to actively shift how we raise little ones, which (as we explore in the interview) reflects where we are at ourselves. Whether you're not a parent yet, or are already a parent: kids are such a potent mirror to help us better see our own inner world. Even if you don't have any desire to be a parent: we are all in the never-ending process of re-parenting ourselves. I hope this episode inspires you to (re)connect with your own inner child or real-life children in a way that provides opportunities for more growth, awareness, tears, play, and deeper connection. You can learn more about Ashleigh at: @raisinghumanskind https://holisticfamilypsychologist.com The book that she mentions is, Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté.
How do you feel when you are in between stages of life? Excited? Nervous? Afraid? Tweens - those kids in between childhood and adolescence - are capable, growing into their own thoughts and ideas and preferences, but not quite as opinionated as teenagers. In this “in between” there is plenty of room for curiosity and character development if we will stay connected to and interested in our kids. My guest this week is Charissa Lopez (she's gotten married since she was last on the show as Charissa Fry), a therapist and parent coach, and she encourages us that healthy attachment can lead to healthy individuation (that process of our kids distinguishing themselves from us). She helps us see that for the entire time we are in relationship with our kids they need comfort and encouragement and connection with us. Though we still have authority over our kids we, as parents, are transitioning out of such a hands-on role in their lives and Charissa helps us think through puberty and friend groups, and our tweens' spiritual growth. Sometimes parents come to realise that the affirmative approach hasn't worked out for their gender-distressed child and they could benefit from alternative approaches. In this episode Sasha and Stella discuss the many complicated reasons some parents reluctantly affirm their child's gender and how difficult and brave it can be to rethink the strategy. Parenting styles are explored, and Sasha and Stella point out the importance of finding your confident voice and parenting authority. They also offer tips and suggestions for steering the ship in a better direction once a family has gathered more information and observed an unfavourable outcome of the affirmative approach. These strategies include mitigating powerful influences on your child, broadening the family's perspective on what overall wellbeing looks like, and modelling that it's ok to change your mind once you get better information. It’s Throwback Thursday! Today’s clip is from episode 70 with Dr. Gabor Mate. So often we think our kids need to learn how to behave, when we really haven’t taken a look at what we’re teaching by example. When we don’t come to the relationship aware and healed of our own struggles, we pass those on—but if we begin to heal ourselves and change our parenting, we change everything. It’s part of the human condition to run away from pain. Most of us have habits that we acquired as a way to cope with painful childhood experiences or traumas, which unfortunately don’t serve us as adults. These habits can manifest as addiction in a wide variety of forms, from substance abuse to overworking. If you feel a sense of deep guilt, without recognizing the source of it, you’re not alone. As children we pick up the energy around us, start to think things are our fault, and we don’t know how to drop that feeling as we grow up. This has a very heavy impact on our emotional, mental, and physical health. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Gabor Maté, a retired physician who, after 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience, worked for over a decade in Vancouver’s Downtown EastSide with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness. Gabor is the bestselling author of four books published in twenty-five languages, and is an internationally renowned speaker highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, childhood development, and the relationship of stress and illness. His book on addiction received the Hubert Evans Prize for literary non-fiction. For his groundbreaking medical work and writing he has been awarded the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian distinction, and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver. His books include: In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction; When the Body Says No; Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection; Scattered: How ADD Originates and What You Can Do About It; and (with Gordon Neufeld) Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Maté talk about detangling our traumatic life experiences to live more aware lives. Dr. Maté and Dhru each open up about their own experiences with addictive tendencies and how those patterns were based out of a deep compensation and survival mechanisms that all of us can relate to. They also talk about what is happening in the addicts brain and how to unravel awareness to promote healing. In his famously insightful way, Dr. Maté discusses the true meaning of recovery and how we can all work through trauma to find our truest selves. In this episode, we dive into: -The pain-body concept (4:06)-Dr. Maté’s definition of addiction (9:57)-How a painful experience or trauma is at the center of all addictions (15:03) -Dr. Maté’s childhood trauma and how it led to his own addictive behaviors (22:01)-Understanding the difference between responsibility and blame, and why “it’s not all our parents’ fault” (30:29)-What is happening physiologically in the brains of addicted people (39:36) -The key to healing painful experiences (46:37) -What does it mean to recover (47:56)-How to approach the healing of behavior addictions fostered by our culture (51:11)-Dr. Maté’s non-negotiable self-care practice (1:00:03)For more on Dr. Gabor Mate you can follow him on Facebook @DrGaborMate, on Twitter @DrGaborMate, on YouTube @DrGaborMate, and through his website https://drgabormate.com/. #138 This week, I am here with the amazing Dr. Gabor Matéand a conversation about trauma, childhood development, and Ayahuasca and its effects on the body and mind. As an added bonus, Gabor also breaks down Donald Trump which was absolutely enlightening to hear. This episode is close to my heart as we discuss my effect on my new-born daughter Ava, and parents’ effects on their children’s development in general. Gabor beautifully explains how all the ideas we have as adults, were shaped as babies. To quote Gabor, “ideas are secondary, and an emotional stance is primary.” So whether you are a parent yourself, or just wish to know the origins of your thoughts and beliefs, give this episode a listen and let us know what you think. Gordon Neufeld is a developmental psychologist and the author of Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. In his forty-plus years studying child development, a few common threads have emerged. According to Neufeld, parents tend to be hyperfocused on socializing their children in order for them to be well liked and have plenty of friends. This good intention can cause children to become peer-attached—meaning they look to their peers instead of the adults in their lives for guidance, care, and stability. Having close peers is important, but the peer relationship shouldn’t be the most important one, says Neufeld. His work helps parents and caretakers maintain and strengthen relationships with their children, recognize when kids are pulling away, and reverse damage that’s already been done to the bond. His approach does not require us to do everything “right”—but it could shift the way we raise and relate to children for the better. (For more, see The goop Podcast hub.) So today we had the guys in to share their views and share they did. Both Anderson Rice and Adrian Green gave profound insights into the importance of understanding investments and peer attachment culture, among other things like patience and adjusting to having a family. Definitely some food for thought. and be sure to check out the book Adrian mentioned entitled, Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. We need to stay relaxed and understand our kids’ unique learning styles and personalities to engage with them in the way their brains are wired to receive direction. Dr. Gabor Mate explains that when we modulate our voice, get at their level, create the safe place, and show compassion, we create learning experiences that help to shape who our kids become. A year ago, my 16 year old son told us he is transgender. I was completely shocked, as he is not particularly feminine. My son was very emotional and begged us to allow him to use puberty blockers or estrogen. We managed to delay his pursuit through distraction and some bargaining, though I often feel like I'm lying to him or manipulating him. We are now in social isolation due to the coronavirus lockdown. My son actually seems happier than he has all year and, out of the blue, he went on a three hour walk with a girl, who he says he's now dating. My question is, what do I do next? Should I ask him if he's still transgender? I feel like I'm walking on a tightrope with him but, is this just what it's like to raise a teenager?” In this episode Lisa mentions the book, “Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers” by Gordon Neufeld & Gabor Maté: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hold-Your-Kids-Parents-Matter/dp/0375760288

EP18: Sil Reynolds on Mothering and Daughtering “Better” (Not Easier) with More Connection and Support You are really in for a huge treat in meeting Sil Reynolds. She and I have connected intermittently over the years. Although our contacts have been brief, she has given me gems that have stuck with me over time. At a time when I felt deeply insecure about mothering and especially single mothering, she told me, a child needs ONE person to securely attach to. And she is a person you listen to and trust when she speaks. She is a wise elder, a former women’s health nurse practitioner, a coach and teacher of women and mothers and an author, together with her stellar daughter, Eliza Reynolds, of the book Mothering and Daughtering. What Sil Shares: Why it’s our job to stay at the center of our daughter’s world How mothering and daughtering can get better (not easier) during the teen years - meaning more connected, deeper, and closer. And how conflict is an opportunity for deeper connection. Her choice to mother more consciously than her mother and the process of “growing up,” confronting undernourished places internally Her thoughts on rites of passage, attachment, dependence, and interdependence The Feminine rising in men and women = we need each other The wisdom of slowing down, connecting with other women, and creating creative containers Perspectives on mothering today. Is it really harder? How we deal with raising kids in a digital age What You’ll Hear: On becoming the mother of a daughter (6:23) As a mother, it’s our job to stay at the center of our daughter’s world and not believe peers will be a better influence (7:20) It can get better in the teen years. Better doesn’t necessarily mean it feels better…(8:12) Sil on “growing up” as a mother and finding mentors and guides (9:18) Life and death cycles and rites of passage (10:58) The story of Vasilisa: An old way of relating as a mother and daughter is dying and a new way is being born (13:04) Mothering is raising your daughter to become herself (14:15) Attachment objects; vulnerable attachment requests at any age (15:35) What kind of rituals can we provide to honor rites of passage today? (17:42) On mothering and daughtering, interdependence, and attachment (20:04) Describe Feminism (with a capital F) (21:19) Feminine rising in men and women says, “Bring it on need!” (24:00) When the tears come in the circle, there’s the oracle. Let your feelings catch up with you. (26:31) Sil sharing Marion Woodman’s quote (27:29) The antidote to so many things these days is slowing down, curing the “too much, too fast, too soon” to reveal a whole other level of understanding (28:33) Is mothering harder today than it ever was? (30:02) Motherhood is exhausting because we don’t get enough help. We don’t have the natural supports we’ve always had (31:38) Don’t miss this quote! (32:40) Attachment parenting doesn’t stop in adolescence. We need to be just as involved in a different way (34:04) Examples of missing containers in our culture: sisterhood, mothering circles, etc. (34:57) On “rupture and repair” and why conflict and communication are important (38:14) How do we deal with technology and mothering? (40:25) Perspectives on raising children in a digital age through the attachment lens (42:36) On setting limits with children (47:30) Attachment doesn’t replace limits (48:02) When you’re in right relationship with your child, there’s a natural hierarchy (48:18) “If you have your child’s heart, no discipline is necessary” (48:50) About Mothering and Daughtering mothering courses and upcoming events (49:04) https://motheringanddaughtering.com Video Blog on Tech Boundaries with Deborah McNamara: https://motheringanddaughtering.com/setting-real-tech-boundaries-kid/ Hold onto Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers by Gordon Neuf, Ph.D. and Gabor Mate, MD https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/120863/hold-on-to-your-kids-by-gordon-neufeld-phd-and-gabor-mate-md/9780307361967/
