When we wrote our book, ADHD Is Awesome, we got to meet a lot of you on tour. Many of you felt seen for the first time and many of you had no idea you had ADHD until you read it and got diagnosed. The majority of you were women. If we had one regret in writing our book, it was that we did not include more about how different ADHD presents in girls and women. But a big reason for that, is that it doesn't exist. There is very little research on how differently ADHD presents in girls and women. So we invited Dr. Jennifer Gierisch and Dr. Julia Schechter from the Duke Center for Girls & Women with ADHD to help us understand why that is and what is being done about it.    We are officially watching the death of "woke" in America and it's really accelerating post election.  Walmart and the University of Georgia are the latest as organizations everywhere now see the error in their ways being persuaded by the crazy left.  It's over.  And if Jaguar didn't get the memo... well... it's been nice knowing them.    Trump threatens Mexico and Canada to shore up the border by January 20 or it's going to cost them big.    Conservative culture is thriving everywhere including Hollywood.  I've got a clip to prove it.    KU and Duke take center stage in Las Vegas for a can't miss non conference game.   These teams couldn't be more different and I will tell you why that benefits KU.    The Chiefs have been hanging their heads a little after needing some drama to beat the Panthers.  That has to be a good thing.  Meanwhile, some fool lost $1 million at Caesar's Palace Sunday on the dumbest bet of the year and Alec Baldwin trashes America at an event in Italy.  ughh.

I'd Rather Be Reading

You may not know the name Judith Jones, but you've certainly felt this dynamic woman's impact and influence on culture. Judith Jones was the editor behind books like The Diary of Anne Frank and Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child; she was also behind authors like Sylvia Plath, John Updike, Langston Hughes, Sharon Olds, and so many others. Her work, as our guest today writes in her new book, was “unrivaled in the industry.” Book editors are kind of shadow figures—they're behind-the-scenes, unsung heroes, who, as Sara B. Franklin writes in her book The Editor: How Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America, which came out on May 28, are people who “work in the service of their authors, not themselves, and their touch is meant to be difficult, if not impossible, for readers to see”—a bit of an invisible hand, if you will. Judith Jones rose through the ranks of publishing when it was very much an industry still dominated by men; one of her gifts was the ability to see talent in women writers, especially women writers many had overlooked. It's hard to believe that, for example, publishers weren't chomping at the bit for the works of Anne Frank or Julia Child, but they weren't; it was Judith who saw their books through to the finish line. She is most associated with cookbooks, and Sara writes that Judith may never have fully gotten the respect she so deserved because “books about food were (and to some extent still are) treated with an air of condescension by the literary world.” Sara and I talk about that on the show today, as well as topics like Judith's portrayal in the 2009 Nora Ephron film Julie & Julia—which Judith didn't like so much—and some of Judith's misses, like with the aforementioned Sylvia Plath and The Bell Jar. Through Sara's book, Judith emerges from the shadows to the spotlight—the amount of passion and dedication Sara put into this bestselling book is remarkable. I can't wait for you to meet Sara and, through her, meet Judith. A little about Sara: she is a writer, teacher, and oral historian who teaches courses on food, writing, embodied culture, and oral history at NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study. In addition to writing The Editor, she also edited Edna Lewis, co-authored The Phenicia Diner Cookbook, and holds a PhD in food studies from NYU and studied documentary storytelling at both the Duke Center for Documentary Studies and the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. Take a listen to our conversation.   The Editor: How Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America by Sara B. Franklin

How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America Sarah B. Franklin Come join us as food historian and author Sara Franklin gives insight into Judith Jones, the visionary behind some of the most important authors of the 20th century, including Julia Child, Anne Frank, John Updike and Sylvia Plath. This iconic editor finally gets her due in Ms. Franklin's newly released book, The Editor. Ms. Franklin recounts that when Judith Jones began working at Doubleday's Paris office in 1949, the then twenty-five-year-old spent most of her time wading through manuscripts in the slush pile and passing on projects—until one day, a manuscript caught her eye. She read the book in one sitting, then begged her boss to consider publishing it. A year later, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl became a bestseller. It was the start of Jones' culture-defining career in publishing. Jones moved to Knopf publishing, and during her more than fifty years at that company, she published the who's who of food writing, including Edna Lewis, M.F.K. Fisher, Madhur Jaffrey, James Beard, Joan Nathan, and, most famously, Julia Child. Jones helped turn these authors into household names and changed the way Americans think about food, cooking, and culinary diversity. Ms. Franklin became friendly with Ms. Jones, conducted numerous interviews with her and studied her personal papers. And now she wants to share the life of one of our country's most influential tastemakers. Biography: Sara B. Franklin received a 2020–2021 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) public scholars grant for her research on Judith Jones and teaches courses on food culture, writing, and oral history at NYU's Gallatin School for Individualized Study and via the NYU Prison Education Initiative at Wallkill Correctional Facility. She is the author of Edna Lewis and The Phoenicia Diner Cookbook. She holds a PhD in food studies from NYU and studied documentary radio and nonfiction at both the Duke Center for Documentary Studies and the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. Our MBC Life

In this second of three episodes on managing bone metastases in MBC, we bring you a broad review of the major interventions to treat and manage bone mets. We explain the differences among the specialties of Radiology (think x-rays and PET/CT scans) vs. Radiation Oncology (external beam, Stereotactic Radiation Surgery (SRS) or Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Interventional Radiology (Biopsies, Cryoablation, Radiofrequency Ablation among others). The majority of patients with MBC have bone metastases and may have been treated with some form of radiation.  For patients with "oligometastatic" disease, where the number of distant sites of metastatic spread is generally considered to be 5 or less, radiation treatment may be “curative”. It gets a little less clear in those of us with heavier tumor burden and more widespread disease. In that case, radiation is often offered for pain and neurologic considerations, such as preventing a tumor from pressing on the spinal cord, possibly resulting in serious spinal cord compression. But, can different radiation strategies be helpful in disease management, beyond pain management? We ask these questions of both experts here – the first Dr. Shalom Kalnicki, Professor of Radiation Oncology and Associate Director of the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York City. Our second expert clinician is Dr. Rory Goodwin, who leads the Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis in Durham, North Carolina. He'll talk about this innovative Center's approach to managing bone mets, including offering some lesser-known treatment approaches like Cryoablation (freezing the tumor), and Radiofrequency Ablation (heating the tumor). We also address an emerging therapy called “Theranostics” which is when a radioactive tracer (like the ones used in PET/CT scans) is bound to a radiation treatment that can deliver a lethal dose directly to the bound cancer cell. So listen here and learn with us, and check out the more detailed show notes on our website for the links to what's covered in the episode.

The real issue for the justices is how to apply their new test, established in the court's 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, that requires courts to look for historical support for gun restrictions. BUFFALO, NY- October 4, 2023 – A new review paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 14 on September 28, 2023, entitled, “UDP-glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH) in clinical oncology and cancer biology.” UDP-glucose-6-dehydrogenase (UGDH) is a cytosolic, hexameric enzyme that converts UDP-glucose to UDP-glucuronic acid (UDP-GlcUA), a key reaction in hormone and xenobiotic metabolism and in the production of extracellular matrix precursors. In this review, researchers Meghan J. Price, Annee D. Nguyen, Jovita K. Byemerwa, Jasmine Flowers, César D. Baëta, and C. Rory Goodwin from Johns Hopkins Hospital, Duke University, Stanford University, Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis, and Duke Cancer Institute classify UGDH as a molecular indicator of tumor progression in multiple cancer types, describe its involvement in key canonical cancer signaling pathways, and identify methods to inhibit UGDH, its substrates, and its downstream products. “As such, we position UGDH as an enzyme to be exploited as a potential prognostication marker in oncology and a therapeutic target in cancer biology.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28514 Correspondence to - C. In 1994 the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed, in which Congress restricted certain people subject to final protection orders (issued after a hearing at which the respondent has an opportunity to appear) from possessing, receiving, shipping, or transporting firearms.  That law held firm until February of 2023, when the Fifth  Circuit ruled in USA v. Rahimi that the federal law prohibiting possession of firearms by people subject to domestic violence protection orders was unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.   In our previous episode we discussed the the long legal history that led to this decision (from Heller, to Bruen, to Rahimi),  but today hosts Kelly and JJ sat down with Ruth Glenn (CEO and President of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, author of the book Everything I Never Dreamed: My Life Surviving and Standing Up to Domestic Violence) and Rachel Graber (Director of Public Policy of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence) to talk about the practical implications (and effects) of this Rahimi decision. Together, we tackle what this ruling means for survivors of intimate partner violence, for folks currently being harmed, and what it signals for us all, as we move forward into 2023? Moreover, vitally, we cover what can you be doing to fight back against decisions that cause harm.Sign up to attend the NCADV Webinar, "United States v.
