Send us a textGerard Charlton has had a pre Ultraman sporting career and post Ultraman sporting career.Like most athletes, pre Ultraman, Gerard was all about racing Ironman in Penticton (11 times) and just trying to get a little faster. In 2005, with some prodding from Steve King, Gerard took on Ultraman Canada. At that time in his life, his sports became more about meeting the challenge and doing it for a greater good. These challenges included him becoming the third ever Uberman finisher and completing the Canadian Death Race. In this engaging podcast episode, Matt delves into the world of polyphasic sleep – the practice of dividing sleep into multiple short naps throughout the day. The episode starts by exploring the historical origins of polyphasic sleep, from the concept of phases within a 24-hour sleep cycle to the motivations behind adopting unconventional sleep patterns for increased productivity.Matt explains various polyphasic sleep schedules, such as the Uberman, Everyman, and Triphasic schedules, which involve segmented sleep periods interspersed with short naps. While proponents claim benefits like enhanced sleep quality, improved brain function, and better health, Walker breaks down the scientific evidence to reveal a different reality. Multiple studies suggest that polyphasic sleep doesn't offer the promised benefits. Instead, it often leads to disrupted sleep stages, impaired cognitive function, mood decline, and adverse effects on health, including blood sugar and cardiovascular issues. In conclusion, Matt emphasizes the importance of prioritizing traditional, consolidated sleep patterns and warns against the potential pitfalls of attempting to hack the sleep cycle. While individual experiences may vary, the weight of scientific evidence suggests that polyphasic sleep might be more of a sleep-hacking myth than a genuine solution for better health and productivity. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way. This week we bring you a replay of one of our favorite recent guests, Mel Urie, who conquered the grueling Uberman triathlon. The 556 mile course goes from the Mists of Avalon to the Snows of Mount Whitney. Starting on Catalina Island, participants swim 21 miles in the open Pacific Ocean to the shores of Palos Verdes. The 400 mile bike route leaves the city of Angels and climbs 20,000 vertical feet before descending to Badwater basin, at 200 feet below sea level, the lowest point in North America. From Badwater, athletes run 135 miles through Death Valley before ascending 13,000 feet to the trailhead @ Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States.” You are going to LOVE this episode, so sit back and enjoy. “The only limits to human capability are those we impose on ourselves.”Mel UrieOver the last few months, I've had the privilege of hosting conversations with an impressive litany of powerhouse women breaking paradigms across a wide swath of disciplines.Mel Urie has more than earned her spot amongst these powerful boundary crushers. And I for one am here to celebrate her.Devoted listeners will recall Mel’s first appearance on the show (along with fellow endurance fiend Danielle Grabol) a little over a year ago (RRP 421) wherein these two badass athletes discussed becoming the first two females to ever complete EPIC5 — a race I helped pioneer that involves completing 5 Ironmans on the 5 Hawaiian Islands in just 5 days. But then Mel had to go and just completely outdo herself (and embarrass the rest of us) by becoming the first female to not only attempt but to actually complete the fatally absurd ultra-endurance fever dream known as Uberman -- a 556-mile self-supported freak fest Outside magazine dubbed “The World’s Hardest Endurance Race”.Kicking off with a brutal 21-mile swim from the island of Catalina to the Southern California mainland -- a feat most swimmers can only dream of accomplishing -- athletes then endure a 2-day, 400-mile bike ride from Los Angeles to the edge of a barren desert, climbing 20,000-feet before descending into Badwater Basin, the hottest and lowest point in North America.Ready to kick up your feet and crack a cold one? Not so fast. The celebration comes only after lacing up the running shoes and facing down the Badwater 135 course. Considered the world's most difficult footrace, it entails a quick 135-mile run across Death Valley and up a good portion of Mt. Whitney.Mel didn’t just survive this endeavor. She absolutely crushed it, completing the course in stunning fashion under 136 hours. This is a conversation about Uberman of course — why Mel wanted it, what happened and what she learned doing it.But more than anything, this is a master class on mental toughness. It’s about putting limiting beliefs in the grave. And it’s about what it means to live a 'No Excuse' life. This conversation isn’t just for women. And it’s not just for athletes or those interested in exploring the world of mind-bending endurance sports. This one is for anyone and everyone looking to break the glass ceiling on human potential. The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. This stubbornly courageous woman deserves far more credit for her accomplishments than the media has delivered to date. I feel an obligation to change that.May her testimony leave you inspired to finally put your excuses in the rearview. Because the time is now to create the aspirational life you deserve.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsOuterknown: Founded by pro-surfer Kelly Slater, Outerknown creates high quality, sustainably produced, and great looking men’s and women’s clothes, ethically manufactured in the world’s cleanest solar-powered factory. In October 2019, Melissa Urie became the first woman to line up at the start of Uberman. Described as the world’s most challenging ultra triathlon, it consists of a 34km swim, 644km ride and 217km run which Mel finished - becoming the first woman to do so - in a total of 135hr 15min - that's over 5 1/2 days! In the process, she also set a new swim course record for the event, finished second overall and smashed the previous course record by 31 hours. A long race requires a long conversation; Mel and I spoke for 2 hours about all-things Uberman so I have divided this conversation into two parts. You can find Part 1 of that conversation here. In it, we covered her preparation and training, the logistics of the event and how the swim leg unfolded - here. This is the second half of our conversation, in which Mel and I cover how the 644km bike, the 217km run leg and her recovery. We have been following Melissa’s journey since February 2019, when Melissa did a Facebook Live for the Tough Girl Tribe - this was then turned into a Tough Girl Podcast EXTRA episode. Uberman is described as the world’s most challenging triathlon. Consisting of 34km swim, 644km ride and 217km run, the race takes competitors from the Catalina Islands off the California coast to the trailhead at the top of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in Continental USA. Until 2019 when Melissa Urie lined up at the start, no woman had ever attempted the event. But 135 hours, 15 minutes and 55 seconds after she started, Mel became the first woman to finish the race! In the process, she also set a new swim course record, finished second overall and smashed the previous course record by 31 hours. And she returns to Sparta Chicks Radio this week to share the story! Melissa Urie is in an entirely different category of ultra-endurance athletes. Getting her start in the endurance world to lose weight and get into shape, she’s now broken several world records. Melissa has completed the Epic 5 in Hawaii, 3 Ultraman triathlons, and is now the 1st female to have ever completed the Uberman, which she did just a couple of weeks ago. Melissa said that Uberman was always about the adventure… not so much the race… and she held onto that adventurous spirit for the entirety of the challenge, which took her 135 hours to complete. Melissa gives much-deserved credit to her crew members who were incredible, each one being integral to her success. After completing the Uberman, Melissa can now claim to be the: - 1st female ever to line up - 1st female ever to complete Uberman - Swim course record holder - Second fastest overall finisher When it was all said and done, Melissa smashed the previous course record by approximately 31 hours. I know you will be just as fascinated by Melissa’s story as I was.

Imagine your next triathlon starting at 10 pm in the dark, deep waters of the Pacific Ocean. Imagine burning your mouth so severely from the saltwater intake of your 11+ hour swim that eating during the 400-mile bike leg becomes unbearable. Then imagine after 2-days of riding your bike and climbing 20,000 feet that you lace up your shoes for the final leg — a 135-mile run through Death Valley. Imagine the years of preparation, enduring patience, and unwavering faith that it takes to show up day after day. To not just hashtag, but live, a "no excuse" life. This story is the one of Mel Urie, the first female to attempt and complete Uberman. Mel is of the character that describes the culture of ultra-endurance athletics. Stubborn, for as long as she can remember, she knows that once the adventure begins, she will not stop until the finish line. She watches closely for limiting beliefs and tests strategies to overcome them in her training sessions. There is no time off from training the mind, and Mel is one of the few that embodies this truth on our planet today. From fatigue to extreme heat, Mel has re-programmed her brain time and again to ensure that she is always moving forward. To say that this conversation is epic, informative, inspiring, is to try to describe in indescribable. Mel Urie shares her experience, her techniques, her gratitude, and grit with us today. We are honored to have connected with her and her husband, Michael, shortly after her Uberman finish. Thank you, everyone, who is supporting the show on Patreon, we are in sincere thanks. Please subscribe to this podcast (below) and leave a review for us to gain even more power for our collective mission to create a better world. Namaste - Jess

Since finishing ‘dead last’ in his first Half Ironman, Michael has gone onto finish 9 Ironman triathlons as well as multiple 24-hour mountain bike races and ultra-marathons. He is also married to 2x Sparta Chicks Radio guest and ultra-endurance athlete, Melissa Urie! (Mel was on the podcast in 2017 to share her experience at the Epic 5 LINK and again early in 2019 to discuss competing at the Ultraman World Championships). Over the last few years, Michael’s racing career has taken a backseat while Mel pursued her ultra-endurance goals, which have included Ultraman races in Canada, Australia and at the World Championships in Hawaii, the Epic 5 as well as her upcoming race at Uberman. So in this episode, Michael and I discuss what it’s like to be on the flip side; how to crew for, live with, support and encourage the endurance athletes in your life. And this topic isn’t complete also without discussing why it’s important for the athlete in the household to be aware of the impact their sport has on the family (in ways you may not have anticipated). This is a very different conversation from the ones we’d usually have, but it is I think just as important. Dr. Kirk Parsley is a former SEAL, served as the Undersea Medical Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group One from June 2009 to January 2013. Dr. Parsley shares his insights on how to optimize sleep as a high performing professional, using peptides, hormones, and the issues with sleep deprivation. Who is Doc Parsley? Kirk Parsley served as an Undersea Medical Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group One from June 2009 to January 2013. While there, he led the development and supervised the group’s first Sports Medicine Rehabilitation center. He is a former SEAL and received his Medical Degree from Bethesda, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in 2004. He interned in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Balboa Naval Hospital San Diego in 2005 and subsequently completed a Navy residency in Hyperbarics and Diving Medicine in 2006. Doctor Parsley has been a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006 and served as Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine. In addition, he is certified in hormonal modulation (Age-Management Medicine). After leaving the Navy he went into concierge medicine and consulting. He continues to consult for multiple corporations, and professional athletes/teams. Doctor Parsley lectures worldwide on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization and is currently completing a book on sleep and health optimization. His philosophy for wellness is simple; in order to optimize our health and get the most out of our bodies and minds, we must live more closely to the way we evolved as a species. He believes that many diseases and disorders that we accept as “inevitable” in modern society are unnecessary complications of poor sleeping habits, living in a toxic environment, eating foods we were not designed to digest, and allowing stress to overwhelm us. His passion is to help his patients and clients achieve the highest quality of life possible, and realize their health, performance, and longevity goals. Dr. Parsley spends as much of his spare time as possible with his three beautiful children (Hayden, Cole, and Harper). He has been a competitive athlete his entire life and enjoys nearly all outdoor activities and sports. Highlights [1:31] Dr. Parsley's background in the Navy Seals [3:00] B.U.D.S. Melissa was first on the Tough Girl Podcast back in 2017 where she shares more about her life, how she got into fitness and doing ultra challenges, such as EPIC 5 (the what, the how, the learnings & the challenges faced and overcome). This audio was taken from a Facebook Live I did with Mel in Melbourne from February 2019. This episode is broken down into 2 parts, with the first part focusing on ultra man and the second half focusing on her training for ultraman, we talk a lot about food, nutrition, and the mental and physical aspects of training. Melissa also provided lots of top tips and advice for you to help you train for your next challenge. Show notes PART 1 ULTRA-MAN - Hawaii Melissa living in Melbourne, working as a mental health nurse, 34 years old How she started doing endurance racing Deciding to focus more on herself and making sure she was looking after herself Being inspired by her friend who did a triathlon How she fell in love with the sport How she progressed in her running and cycling Dealing with stress Finding the right distance for you and why it matters EPIC 5 - 5 Ironman in 5 days on 5 different islands (This was covered in the first Podcast episode) Ultra-man Hawaii (Nov 2018)- what’s involved No comparison allowed!!!! The challenges on Day 1 Dealing with changes which happen on race day Not worrying about things which are outside of her control Working with a coach and having complete faith in them Working on her running strength and getting back into the gym Pace and feel training while running Keeping going when she’s not in the mood Keeping moving no matter what! Not making day 2 bike cut-off Nutrition and still trying to figure it out Cycling and vomiting for 4 hours…. Part of the fun is figuring out your body and what works for you Dealing with not achieving the goal and how she deals with it personally (and why she doesn’t care about what other people think) PART 2 - UBERMAN What is Uberman (33km swim - 633km bike - 240km run) Where do you start with a challenge like this Why it is not ridiculous in her mind Reframing the challenge Training for a challenge like this…. Having 8 months to train Dealing with a week’s training at a time Focusing on what you need to do now Working full time and fitting in training Waking up at 4.35am…. Going at bed at 8.30pm Trying to spend time with her husband Having company while training Night time routine and being a good napper Being a vegan - How do you get your protein? Chocolate and ice-cream….. What she eats during the day and why Go to naught snack (but no food is naught FYI!) Vegan gels…. Do you like vegemite???!! Focusing on real food while riding on the bike Refuelling while swimming - what she has and how feet zones work Mental Preparation - how to get your head in the hame and why reflection is very important Never taking her mental strength for granted Visualisation…. and picturing the finish line Vision boards…. Biggest challenge/what she’s most concerned about Managing sleep during Uberman and why she won’t know how it’s going to be until she’s in it Why it’s ok not to know 3 guys have done it in 6/7 days No other women have completed it 10th October start date Can we track her during the race? Man-Talk About Motors. Under the hood, we are over our pistons. Stick shift. Cylinders in the thousands. Sometimes a man’s got to walk away from what drives him. So ride on the bike at the back. This week we have special guest Juan Guevara, Owner of The Running Elements on discussing the latest trends in shoes and technology and the future of where the endurance sports are going.
Dr. Benjamin Smarr returns for a deeper dive into sleep physiology, wearable technology, social jet lag, and the missed opportunities in health innovation. “If people have been doing rotating shift work, the longer that they've not been doing it, the more all these bad effects tend to go away...which is amazing and wonderful. That's for adults. That's not for developing kids. But even so, I think saying I'm pregnant so I can never fly is probably overblown. I think it's more an issue of the chronic daily insults where you just don't get time to recover.” Dr. Benjamin Smarr Who is Dr. Benjamin Smarr? Dr. Benjamin Smarr studies the temporal structures that biological systems make as they move through time. An NIH research fellow at UC Berkeley, his work focuses on understanding how physiological dynamics like sleep, circadian rhythms, and ovulatory cycles are shaped by the brain, and how disturbances to those cycles gives rise to disease. Dr. Smarr is also an advocate for scientific outreach, and routinely gives public lectures and visits K-12 classrooms to help promote the idea that by understanding the biology that guides us, we can live more empowered lives. Highlights on Sleep [4:59] The importance of sleep cycles [6:36] Is any sleep stage more important than another? [11:04] Uberman, or Polyphasic sleep [14:40] Social jet lag [20:45] Circadian rhythms and pregnancy [24:18] The role of circadian rhythms and inflammation [27:40] Social jet lag, chronotypes, and student performance in the classroom. [32:50] Testing your chronotype without genetics [34:27] Dr. Smarr's take on the wearable market and the current best of breed. I do a deeper dive on this here. [37:54] If Dr. Benjamin Smarr designed his own wearable, what would it look like? [41:19] Global healthcare, data privacy, and other issues deterring health innovation [43:59] Why do we know so little about sleep? Episode 35: Scott Sambucci Today’s featured guest is…. me! – Scott Sambucci – your podcast host and Sales Geek extraordinaire. I’ve spent more than two decades building and selling technology products, leading three Silicon Valley startups each to their first millions in revenue. Now with SalesQualia, I’m the Founder of SalesQualia where I work with enterprise/B2B startups on achieving scalable revenue growth. I’ve authored two books on Startup Selling, spoken at a TEDx and presented at The Lean Startup Conference (to name a few accolades I’m awfully proud of…) Outside of work, I tackle crazy long endurance events, including three Ironman triathlons, marathon swims across The Catalina Channel, Uberman and most recently, the Tahoe 200 – a 200-mile foot race circumnavigating Lake Tahoe. Call or email anytime at scott@salesqualia.com or (415) 596-0804. With SalesQualia, I help early stage B2B enterprise startups achieve scalable revenue growth. Find our website here: www.salesqualia.com Follow us on Facebook here where I host a weekly Facebook Live Sales Q&A: https://www.facebook.com/salesqualia Our clients span across several verticals and industries, including AI, FinTech, EdTech, RetailTech & HeathTech, to name a few including companies like Octane, Butter, Shift Messenger, Kanopi Studios, Better Manager & Data Dwell. Our clients include graduates of accelerator and incubator programs such as Y-Combinator, TINC and All-Turtles. Show Notes & Topics: Why me this in this episode? What is the ONE sales activity in your company that matters most? I've worked with hundreds of startups either in a 1:1 relationship, and via live webinars workshops. And almost in every single case, as I'm first starting conversations with startup teams, I hear are things like, "Hey, I need to work on my pricing, and I need to work on my slide deck, and I need to work on my demo, I need to close more deals, I need to do a better job prospecting, I'm trying to figure out cold emailing." Obviously there's a lot of places in your sales process, but… The reason, that I'm asking the question I’m asking in this episode is that in every case with clients and workshop attendees, there is ONE specific sales activity that matters most. The problem is that most startup teams fail to 1) Recognize that ONE activity, and 2) Focus on that activity as a key driver to growth. In this episode, I’ll dive deep into three startups where I’ve worked as examples – Altos Research, Aplia and Blend – to illustrate this point. By recording this episode, my hope for you is that you can begin to identify the ONE sales activity that matters most for YOUR startup, so that you can achieve sales velocity and scalable revenue growth. Stang lets his Texas accent go hogwild in this one, riding a bucking bronco of Texanism while reading a funny piece by James Moore about Jade Helm 15. Stang also reads a rant by Rev. Fidd Chewley, "What's Gonna Happen to the Church in the Future? (Humbug!)" We hear a new song, "Uberman," by Hombres del Mar, an adaptation of The Brag of the SubGenius. We hear a 10 minute rant-n-blues jam by Einstein's Secret Orchestra with Dave and Stang from 1,000 shows ago, in 1996. Stang reads sex advice to the romantic SubGenius Monster Hunter regarding Mounting. Then, Lonesome Cowboy Dave calls in. Among the issue's discussed: our friend Rev. Onan Canobite's art that was displayed in the infamous Texas Muslim-Hater's Cartoon Show and Botched Terror Attack.
At Nuremberg after the end of World War II, an army psychiatrist interviews the most dangerous and powerful war criminal ever captured: the dread Nazi codenamed "Überman."With a villain like that in the story, Big and Rish had no choice but to talk about all-time great villains.
