Send us a textWelcome back to the Agegroup Multisport Podcast.this episode we have the pleasure of speaking with Natasha Pertwee, who got in touch with us to share her story on our Pod.Natasha says "I'm not sure that I'm really very interesting, so please don't worry if you feel I'm not suitable for this podcast!I live in Perth, Australia Quick summary of my mutlisport history:I originally started running after I had my kids. After a couple of marathons, I looked for a change and someone mentioned triathlon.I taught myself to swim from You tube and put road wheels on my mountain bike and made it through my first triathlon on a Wednesday evening at Hever Castle.I dabbled for a couple of years and then said to my friend that if I didn't get on a podium the following year, I would quit. She helped me with a bit of a training plan and I did indeed move up to podium places.I decided to try for age group. I joined a club and stepped up my training and went to Eaton Dorney via the Mallorca 70.3!! (Yes, I struggle to say no to things!!). I did well enough to qualify on roll down, but I wanted to be sure, so I drove to Strathclyde and qualified in 3rd place.Off to Mexico (2016) and managed a 9th place finish in the sprint. Shortly afterwards I moved to Australia. I'd got the bug and decided to fly back to the UK in 2018 to qualify for GB again. It was a double qualifier that year for Gold Coast and Lausanne.Meanwhile I was competing in Austalia and qualified for Ironman 70.3 worlds, but I decided not to go.Gold Coast sprint tri was in 2018 and after that I gave myself 10 weeks to go from sprint to full Ironman! I did Busselton Ironman in 11:30 (ish!!!).2019 saw me do the Etape de Tour and then Lausanne sprint worlds a month later. Still for GB. I finished 2019 with anther 70.3 and another world qualification.2020 and covid hit. We continued to race in WA and I did SEVEN gravel race, another 70.3 (and another worlds place) and the road cycling event called Tour of Margaret River.2021 was my citizenship and with that my first chance to qualify for Aus. I trained hard for the qualifying race in December and the week before I came off my bike and fractured my clavicle. Luckily in my warm up, I'd gone to the state championship for Duathlon and had won, so I redirected my plans to the Duathlon Worlds in Romania instead.2022 saw me shift to train running. I did my first 80km ultra in May and went to Romania in June (5th place) and first in the green and gold! I finished the year with UTMB Kosciusko 50km.2023 was the covid delayed 70.3 worlds in Finland for Aus. And another state duathlon championship.2024: I ran 2000km in the first 6 months to train for UTMB Verbier in July. It was cancelled the day before due to storms!!!Townsville Duathlon worlds 4 weeks later (4th)Now, I'm back to trail running and have UTMB Thailand in December and hopefully UTMB CCC in August next year!
This week go into the UTMB CCC 100k race that is happening next week! We talk a little more about the Olympics, our favorite ultra running moments so far this year, and then dive deep into the field at CCC.
Minha convidada jogou voleibol durante a infância e adolescência. In this episode, and on our very SMOGATHON special episode, we are joined by local running legend and ultra runner Victoria Henderson. Victoria has completed a number of very long races over the years since getting into long distance running back in 2015. Those races include UTMB CCC, Arc of Attrition and many of the Centurion races too. Victoria took part in the 2023 SMOGATHON and comes on to chat all about the run itself and about a topic I learned a lot about preparing for this show - female participation in ultra distance running and races. An absolutely fantastic chat with Victoria about this. Some links I wanted to include in the show notes about the topic if you wanted to read more are below: https://www.oureaevents.com/news/2023/3/6/female-participation-race-directors-blog https://www.sheraces.com/ Enjoy the show everyone and as always, happy miles! Emily Hawgood is a professional trail and ultra runner from Zimbabwe sponsored by Adidas Terrex. Emily is one of the most wonderful and cheerful people I know, not just in the sport of running, and she's one of the strongest trail athletes in the world, especially in the 100k-100m distance. She's also a running coach, a strength coach, she studied Exercise Science at the College of Idaho and she has a master's degree in High Altitude Exercise Physiology from the University of Gunnison in Colorado. In this conversation we talk about Emily and her very successful year, where she placed 5th at Western States and second at UTMB CCC, about how she's treating herself during her off-season, how she handles the pressure of training and racing at a high level and a bunch of other topics. My favorite part of the conversation was when we dived deep into training, talking about our relationship with training data, with our respective coaches, some thoughts on strength training, strength training periodization and altitude training. Hayden Hawks is the real deal. With wins and course records at races like UTMB CCC and the JFK 50, it's no wonder that Hayden is a strong contender for the win at the upcoming Western States Endurance Run 100 on June 24th. And it's something he has been dreaming about for a long time. But even with goals that big, it didn't take long to see that there is much more to Hayden than simply being a fast runner. He is a dedicated family man who holds tight to his faith, all while being a student of Ultra and sharpening his craft daily. He embraces the process as much as he savors the races, and his passion is contagious. Take us on your long run and hear what Hayden has been doing to prepare for Western States, along with his advice and tactical tips for being the best we can be out on the trail. Episode 35! We welcome back our Episode 31 guest, Jemma Purandare, to (finally!) run us through her trip to Europe and her experience of a long time in the making dream, running - UTMB's CCC, lining up to take on 100kms of brutal trail running through the Alps. When we spoke to Jemma last, she was on the brink of flying from Australia to Europe to toe the line at this huge race, after months of prep - while also juggling day to day life including work, a PhD and her Law studies. If you haven't listened to Jemma's pre race episode, we highly recommend you jump back to Episode 31 to hear more about Jemma as a person, and specifically her journey to qualifying for CCC. We're not going to give it all away in the show notes but, things didn't exactly go to plan, and altitude sickness and cut off times played a major role in that. If you're curious about what it takes to take on a major mountain race like this, and how it feels when you well and truly hit the pain/altitude sickness/tunnel vision cave - tune in to hear more. Since this experience, Jemma has jumped right back in with her running (with an incredible research/work trip to Mexico thrown in there for good measure) and has raced Ultra Trail Australia 50km, amidst other trail runs. Her determination to keep on keeping on; to learn from her CCC experience and to build into a year of solid 50km races, while also showing enthusiasm to step back onto that CCC start line again is inspiring! To see beautiful mountain images and to read Jemma's reflections, you can find Jemma online on Instagram at @littlegoatjem If you are keen to help keep the lights on for this podcast, you can support us on Patreon, or you can leave a review on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on like Apple or Spotify. Thank you for the continued support from all of our listeners and patrons - we love and appreciate you all!
Kieren D'Souza is one of the best ultra runners from India. It is difficult to put a tag like Ultra runner on him. He is much more than that. He finished 2nd in his category UTMB CCC in 2015, he is the first Indian to complete the 246km Spartathon in 2016, he finished 7th in Eiger Ultra and set course record at LA Ultra the High a 111km race in Leh Ladakh in the Himalayas. He is the first Indian to finish in top 100 at the Trail running World Championships where he finished 98th overall in his second appearance at the event in 2018. More recently he has been making his own races by setting FKTs or Fastest Known Times with speed ascents of many peaks in the Himalayas. In 2020 he set a speed ascent record of 5287m Friendship peak in 11hours 45m 50 secs, 6000m Deo Tibba in 19 hrs 38mins, Tripple Trouble course of 126km in 18hrs 58mins. He then went on to finish summit 10 peaks all of which were over 6000m in 26 days. We will probably need a separate episode to just list out all of accomplishments. But, he is someone who doesn't like to talk about his past accomplishments but wants to focus on contributing to the future of sport in India. We recorded this when he was in Bangalore for a few days just before he was to fly off to take part in 2022 Trail running world championships in Thailand. I'm glad we could make it happen. Jazmine Lowther is the ultimate mountain athlete. This British Columbian recently became sponsored by The North Face, and is dark horse-ing the heck out of the ultra circuit: not only did she earn a Golden Ticket at Western States, she recently placed fourth at the UTMB CCC, which was her first ever European race. We talk about magical running moments, her job as a professional Agrologist and Field Biologist, and what might be next on her list of accomplishments. Photo cover credit: Mathias Dumas
Episode 32! Firstly, apologies if this is a tricky one to listen to sound wise - our recording set up from three remote places didn't go quite to plan and our voices come through at different levels, with Sarah being quiet. The main thing we reckon though is you can still hear Cecilia well, and we hope it's not too annoying to listen to as it's well worth perservering with to hear from "CC at CCC"! We welcome back good friend of the show - Cecilia Mattas, to run us through her recent trip to Europe and how it felt to take on the epic trail race - UTMB's CCC, traversing over 100kms on foot, at speed, through the Alps. When we last spoke to Cecilia back on Episode 5, she was hot off the back of a win at Ultra Trail Australia 100km. Given COVID restrictions at the time, this opportunity at CCC was Cecilia's first chance to truly race on the world stage and kudos to her as she absolutely crushed it. While Cecilia has an admirable training ethic and inspiring attitude to her running, nothing can be taken for granted when racing such a long distance on such technical terrain at altitude. As ever though, Cecilia, while being crewed by her partner Tom, handled it with joy and grace - and she shares some fantastic insights into the brutal nature of this course and the real prep it requires. Humble and honest as ever, Cecilia shares with us how she'd considered a top 5 finish while signing up for the race, and on having the opportunity to recce the course pre race, realised it was going to be a huge experience and learning curve. Finishing narrowly outside of the top 20 in the female field is a truly incredible achievement for her first CCC and we can't wait to see what she brings in future! Tune in to hear about Cecilia's race preparation, including taking time out in Europe beforehand to train and see family and friends (and take on a swim run race with Tom); the CCC journey itself - including forgetting a piece of mandatory gear last minute (again!) and the massive toll that a mountain course like this takes on the mind and body. Plus upcoming plans, including Cecilia now crewing for her partner Tom on his first UTA 100km journey! All the best to both of you. You can find Cecilia on Instagram at @ceciliamattas If you are keen to help keep the lights on for this podcast, you can support us on Patreon, or you can leave a review on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on like Apple or Spotify.Thank you for the continued support from all of our listeners and patrons - we love and appreciate you all!
Microcosm Coaching Team Call 09/02/2022: First, I apologize for the length of this call. I know it's a bit longer than usual, but this was a big topic with many facets and nuances to touch on. Ok, so this week's call is an attempt at illustrating the long-term process involved in working toward big goals through the lens of my race at UTMB CCC. For those of you not familiar, this is essentially the world championship of 100km mountain running, with 62 miles and 20,000 feet of vertical gain. It's set in the most iconic location for mountain sports in the world, Chamonix, France. On this call, Coach Zoë and I take the team through the four year process of preparing for the event, through my recent build, UTMB week and talk a bit about the race too. There are a lot of great takeaways here, but the main points I want athletes to think about surround our timelines for big goals, the ever elusive balance between work, life and training- that is worth striving for balance but only when you have the understanding that it will never truly be perfect, and that you're capable of more than you believe, even in the face of a lot of information that might tell you differently. I hope by talking a bit about my experience at CCC we can further diminish some of the stigma around the incorrect logic that bad days and not hitting performance or outcome related goals on race day are the same thing as failure. They are not. I also want to diminish the stigma around how races are supposed to go even after incredible builds and great preparation. The course and the day don't owe us anything and therefore it's important to remember and emphasize the overall journey. As I mentioned in the call, I had one of the best, most fun builds leading up to CCC and that experience only helps to further fuel everything that will come after this. A good build should help feed your stoke- when it does you know your goals are truly in alignment with your values and WHY and you've created the intrinsic environment necessary for reaching that finish line. I hope you enjoy this episode and as usual, if you have any feedback, a question for a future call or are looking for support in your running journey, please visit us on the web at microcosm-coaching.com or contact us at microcosmcoaching@gmail.com

Episode 31! Enjoy this fantastic, fun and honest conversation with UK born, now Springbrook based, Jemma Purandare. Jemma is a wonderfully bubbly and engaging woman and shares with us how she's training for a dream race - CCC, as part of the UTMB festival, while also holding down a full time job as an Environmental Scientist; studying International Law and since that's not enough for one busy human (!) - working on a PhD looking at climate change and its influence on river estuaries on the Gold Coast. We hear about Jemma's background, growing up in the UK, studying Landscape Architecture (before two Masters programs to refocus on her interest in Environmental Science) at Edinburgh University and first coming to Australia to study, before relocating here full-time in 2011. From a sporting perspective, Jemma shares how she mainly played netball in school and started running as a means to meet people outside of work, how this turned into racing triathlon, all the way into the full IRONMAN distance in 2016. Recognising her ability for endurance, Jemma began to focus on trail running, as part of the inaugural Mountain Goat running crew in Brisbane. Jemma shares with us her preparation for CCC (100km and over 6000m of vert!); her experience of goal setting and qualifying for the race; an endemetriosis diagnosis and experience of fatigue, which led her to focus more on her health and nutrition and her experience as a woman in sport and science. Jemma was also mentioned in our last podcast episode as she travelled to the USA to crew for Meagan Brown at Western States Endurance Run - listen back to Episode 30 for more on that one! As Meagan shared with us in some of our pre-episode "research" work, Jemma is "one of the most kind, supportive, caring people you'll meet who will leave this Earth in a better place" and it was a pleasure to elevate her voice in this episode. You can find Jemma on Instagram at @littlegoatjem If you are keen to help keep the lights on for this podcast, you can support us on Patreon, or you can leave a review on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on like Apple or Spotify.Thank you for the continued support from all of our listeners and patrons - we love and appreciate you all!

Today's guest is Patrick Stangbye. Patrick grew up in the suburbs of Oslo in Norway, he's a creative director who works closely alongside brands to tell a story and communicate with their audience. Also, an accomplished runner after taking up the sport following his first marathon in 2016 he is often found on the trails in Norway hoovering up vert and pushing himself physically, taking on UTMB CCC in 2019 and again this year in August. In this conversation we talk about the simplest definition of what he does for a living, Norwegian food staples, technical outdoor wear as a reflection of our times and that sometimes ultra running is just plain hard. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebigrunpodcast/message
This episode of The Checkpoint is sponsored by adidas TERREX. Abby Hall is a professional trail runner for adidas TERREX. She started running at the age of 12 and has never stopped! She fell in love with running, both the pursuit and the community and – as an adult - continued running when she was living in Chicago and Los Angeles, working as a graphic designer. She started to make trips to the mountains on the weekends and moved to Boulder, Colorado with a view to be part of a community eager to explore the outdoors. In Boulder, Abby signed up for a number of ultras and attended every group trail run she could find, exploring the trails and mountains. She now lives in Flagstaff, Arizona and over the past few years has been racing all over the world. Recently, Abby has finished 1st at the Innsbruck Alpine Trail Festival 65k, 2nd at the 2022 Transgrancanaria Classic (126km), 2nd in the prestigious 2021 UTMB-CCC race and she has also finished Western States 100 amongst the top 30 athletes. Abby is part of the adidas TERREX ‘United by Summits' campaign and we discuss what that message means to her in this conversation. Kia ora e te whānau..This week on the podcast Eugene speaks with Hayden Hawks. Hayden is a professional runner based in Utah who famously won the first trail ultra he entered, the Speed Goat 50km in 2016. For those that know, this is not just any race. Hayden has a clutch of other races including JFK 50 Mile in a course record in 2020, Black Canyon 2020, UTMB CCC in 2017 in a course record. He recently won the Coastal Challenge in Costa Rica too. Apart from life as a professional athlete, Hayden is an exercise science graduate, loves to go on riding adventures, and is a father and husband. Eugene had a deep dive into his training methods - and, importantly, recovery - we talked about the idea that US male athletes seem to have a thing about UTMB, which Hayden pushes back on quite strongly. Importantly, too, (for Matt) they discuss whether Hayden will be rocking his mustache when he lines up at Western States in June to get some revenge for last year when he was running in second until mile 92 until things went south. In this episode Jemma Purandare talks about what running looks like in her life! She is a keen distance trail runner which works perfectly with her career as an environmental scientist! Signing up to scary running goals is her secret to getting out the door and training each week - this years scary races - the 6 foot track marathon (Blue Mtn, NSW) and UTMB CCC (for the uninitiated this is 101k ultra trail race around Most Blanc in France)… Like many of us, Jemma sometimes struggles with body image (especially at races), however she recently had surgery which has forced her to accept and be grateful for what her body can do thanks to running. She now works with her body and not against it. I hope you enjoy this delightful conversation as much as I did :) Jemma's running tips - just give it a go with no expectations on yourself, find a set route/loop nearby that you can do regularly (so you can measure your progress), don't get sucked into having to run faster or longer & don't something that brings you joy. https://fitmindfitbody.co/podcast/

O to väčšiu radosť sme mali, keď prijal pozvanie do nášho podcastu, hoci sme vďaka neznalosti terénu nevedeli čo čakať, ktorým smerom rozhovor potiahnuť.
