Evan Birch is a partner, father, friend, colleague and ultra runner who has been running his entire life, in more ways than one. While his accomplishments range from competing in the Sinister 7 100, the Canadian Death Race and the Divide 200, Evan's foray into ultra running began in 2017, born out of running away from a two-decade career in emergency services. He assisted thousands of people, saved countless lives and comforted many more on their worst days…until it broke him.  In January 2022, Evan finally asked for help and slowly developed a new relationship with running through hours of intensive therapy. He forged a path towards healing from a diagnosis of PTSD, anxiety, and depression and eventually found he was no longer running away. He was facing his trauma head-on, leaning into the storm and the fear. His goal is to show others that there is a path forward and that you are not alone. He believes that you are more capable than you perceive yourself to be and that stepping out of your comfort zone is the only way to grow. It is through shared experiences that we can make a difference for ourselves and others.Connect with Evan:Instagram: @ultrabirch Connect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookWe love hearing from you! Welcome to the fall edition of Catching Up With Kim and Carolyn, where we meander our way through various current events in the road & trail running worlds, including some of our own racing and pacing experiences. Kim kicks things off by sharing about her DNF at the Canadian Death Race, why that really concerned her and what she's doing to remedy her situation. She goes on to tell us a crazy story about pacing a former guest, Heidi Schmaltz, overnight at the Lost Soul Ultra 100M and why she was so scared for Heidi. Carolyn touched on her slow but steady comeback from injury that culminated in a few fall races, including her first cross country race in over 30 years! We cap things off with a discussion on Shalane Flanagan's challenging endeavour to complete all six world major marathons in under 3 hours, despite them all taking place within a six week period of time, and weigh in on Big's Backyard Ultra that was taking place live at the time of this recording. We referenced loads of past guest interviews that are all linked up in the show notes and talked about some heartwarming interactions we've each had with our amazing listeners recently. Brian Gallant is a full-time mountain trail race director from Crowsnest Pass, Alberta where he runs Sinister Sports, a growing operation that puts on trail races that many recognize and respect including the famous Sinister Triple: the Sinister 7 Ultra, Canadian Death Race, and the Black Spur Ultra.  Brian has been race directing for 20 years, and over that time he has developed a unique perspective on the sport, looking at it from an angle that, in his words, “nobody notices unless something goes wrong.” He shares why he does what he does, the core values with which he anchors his organization, and what it takes to remain sustainable in today's trail racing climate. He highlights the racer experience as his number one priority and Kim has personally both cursed him and blessed him as she's traversed his race courses. If you are a trail runner in western Canada, you've heard of Sinister Sports and no doubt have done or want to do one of Brian's races. COVID has taught us that having the opportunity to race is a gift and not a given. We hope that you will aspire to something “sinister” in 2022 and sign up for one of the six tempting trail races offered by Brian and his crew at Sinister Sports.Connect with Brian:Facebook: @SinisterSports (plus groups for each event)Instagram & Twitter: @sinister_sports Website: sinistersports.caResources we discussed in the episode:Favourite Mantra: Racing is 90% mental and the rest is in your headFavourite Place to Run: Around Kimberley, BCBucket list Race: Volunteer at Western StatesFavourite Running Resources: Race directing forums/articlesFavourite Post Run Indulgence: Sleep! Growing up in Germany, John Harrison Pockler’s introduction to running occurred at the age of 18 when his dad received an entry to the Berlin Marathon. John would end up participating in the race, finishing 13th in his age group! The experience made John realize how much he enjoyed running and running long and far was what gave him the greatest satisfaction. John would eventually make the switch from road to trail running where he competed as an ultramarathoner. His running resume includes the Ultra-Trail Cape Town 125 km and placing 1st at the Schinder-Trail Grauer Kopf 125 km. 5 years ago, John moved to Canada for work and set his sights on several great Canadian races including the Canadian Death Race 125 km in Alberta and the North Face Endurance Challenge - Ontario - 50K and Niagara Ultra 50 km in Ontario. John set his sights on a big goal for 2020 and with races being canceled, he decided he wanted to create his own race. John heard about the Bruce Trail from friends in the trail running community, so after consulting Christian Flugel, a friend from Germany, the decision was made to attempt the Fastest Known Time running the 890-km Bruce Trail from end to end. We’ll discuss everything from start to finish, including the approach he took to select a crew to support him, some of the challenges he faced, and why he chose to fundraise for The Bruce Trail Conservancy! How to lead. Born and raised in CT, Eric Kapitulik attended at the US Naval Academy, where he was a four-year varsity letter winner on the lacrosse team. Graduating in 1995, Eric went on to serve in the Marine Corps as both an Infantry Officer and Special Operations Officer. As a Platoon Commander, he led a team of 20 covert operations specialists on numerous Special Forces-related missions, including long-range recon patrols, hostage rescues, high-altitude jump exercises, ship takeovers, and gas-oil platform takedowns. In 1999, Eric and his platoon were in a helicopter crash that resulted in the death of seven Marines. In response to this tragedy, Eric created the Force Reconnaissance Scholarship Fund to benefit the children of his fallen men. In order to raise money for the fund, he has participated in eight Ironmans, The Canadian Death Race, The Eco-Challenge, and The American Birkebeiner Ski Marathon. Eric has also summited five of the Seven Summits including Mount Everest. Since leaving active duty, Eric has received his MBA and founded his company, The Program, with the goal of providing both athletic and corporate teams with the best leadership development and team building services in the country. His upcoming book is titled The Program, Lessons from Elite Military Units for Creating and Sustaining High-Performance Leaders and Teams. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re in the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes to reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You Are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle, and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far. “Once you push those boundaries of what's possible, they keep expanding.” – Norma Bastidas In 2014, Norma Bastidas, ultra athlete and single mother broke the Guinness World Record for Longest Triathlon after swimming, biking and running 3,762 miles (6,054 km) from Cancún, Mexico to Washington, D.C. Prior to that, in 2009, Norma became the fastest female in history to run seven of the planet's most unforgiving environments on seven separate continents in seven months. That in itself is remarkable but as a single mother, and a survivor of poverty, kidnapping, sexual violence and human trafficking, Norma's story is extraordinary. Norma views athletic feats as metaphors for the incredible trials faced every day by the survivors of sexual violence and for those people who are visually impaired. Norma's mission is to educate and empower, demonstrating to the world that one's past does not dictate one's future, and prove that everyday people are capable of making extraordinary strides in the fight against the problems facing the world today. Norma believes her work will show her children that we can all have a positive impact on other people's lives and change the world around them.    Show Notes [02:06] Patrick lets us in on a little background to his next interview: a stretch for him outside the typical TEDM conversation towards a topic he felt compelled to shine a light on. [02:43] An introduction to Patrick's next guest: Norma Bastidas [04:42] Norma and Patrick get their conversation underway. Norma challenges the traditional view of success to broaden that definition. [05:57] Norma shares what she does, what she stands for and why. She is still waking up with new dreams and passions. [08:39] Patrick shares a bit about how Norma came to be on The Everyday Millionaire. [09:21] Norma briefly recounts her story of where she has come from in Mexico to how she came to Canada. [11:40] Norma describes the betrayal that resulted in her being trafficked to Japan at 19 after escaping a kidnapping in Mexico when she was 17 years old. [13:36] Expanding on the story of her kidnapping, Norma talks about the trauma it left her with and the fearsome reality of the hometown she returned to after her rescue. Personal safety was like playing Russian roulette daily. [17:45] Limited options, desperation, and naivete at such a young age understandably obstructed Norma's ability to recognize the deception being presented to her as a modeling job in Japan. [19:28] Norma details the journey of being courted to escape Mexico. Promises of moving from her current circumstances of working in a gym and on television to modeling and greeting the wealthy in a Studio 54 style environment reveals itself as human trafficking and another kind of prison. [25:42] Norma talks about her experience to shine a light on human trafficking, what it really is and how it most often looks. [27:52] Even though it may look a little different, Norma talks about how this imprisonment shows up for indigenous women in Canada. [29:45] Norma wants to help people understand whether or not a person makes an unknowing choice as she did, whether it's legal or illegal, trafficking is still exploitation. She urges those who make the choice of engaging in prostitution to make it an empowered choice. [33:29] The story behind why Norma became a marathon runner. The difficult path of dealing with her son's cone-rod dystrophy diagnosis and how she coped with these significant challenges in a healthier way than vodka. [37:32] An invitation from a friend to qualify for the Boston Marathon was all Norma needed to commit. During the helpless time of her son's recovery, Norma found something she could be in control of. [38:26] After completing the Boston Marathon, Norma was fascinated with how she could further expand her limits and potential but closer to home this time. Enter the Canadian Death Race and her life's passion. [40:15] Norma explains how she tied together her passion to ...

The Canadian Death Race is a 125K ultramarathon held annually in August in Grande Cache, Alberta. It covers over 5000m in elevation, including three mountain summits, and as its name suggests, this race is tough.  Each year, up to a thousand runners sign up, and to no one's surprise, each year hundreds fail to finish. But in 2015 as the first runner crossed the finish line, everyone was surprised --including herself. On this week's episode of The Shakeout, we tell the story of how one ultrarunner not only survived the Canadian Death Race but unexpectedly came out on top.
