The tag line of the Norseman Triathlon is “This Race is Not For You.” The Norseman is a full distance triathlon in Norway comprised of a freezing cold 2.4 mile swim, over 10,000 feet of climbing in 112 miles, and a marathon with a hill called “Zombie Hill.” Over 5000 people apply each year for only 250 slots. So what motivated Frankie Forzoni, as a newbie triathlete, to enter the lottery and claim her spot? Her story is incredible. She was hit by a car in 2020 and had serious injuries, began swimming in her rehab, and decided to jump into triathlon. The Norseman was her FIRST long course triathlon and not only that, she trained for this race in hot and flat Singapore. But once you hear Frankie talk in this podcast, you will realize why and how she succeeded in one the hardest triathlons in the world. This is a great race recap, from her build to equipment, to race day. Have a listen!

Be smaller. Be lighter. For our entire lives those messages have been drilled into us from every angle, including very often from those in our sports. We hear we need to be at “race weight.” We're shown “idealized” images of what female athletes “should” look like. It's all incredibly damaging, especially as we hit menopause and midlife and our bodies start to change. It's also based on BS. Women with cellulite and extra body fat win races. Women who are well-fueled outperform those who are not. There is no one magic number on the scale or body fat percentage that makes us a success. All the destructive messages that make us hate our bodies feed the diet culture machine. This week we sat down with coach and sports dietitian Marni Sumbal to dismantle that machine and help us find body peace, so we don't spend the next chapters of our lives in an endless war with ourselves. Marni Sumbal MS, RD, CSSD, LD/N is the owner of Trimarni Coaching and Nutrition, a coaching and nutrition company based in Greenville, South Carolina, which she runs with her husband and RETUL bike fit expert, Karel Sumbal. Marni is a 3x author, board certified sports dietitian and holds a master of science in exercise physiology. She is a 19x Ironman finisher, 2x XTRI finisher, and 6x Ironman World Championship finisher. You can learn more about her and her services at trimarnicoach.com.

Another race which is fast becoming a bucket list event is the Patagonman in Chile. In this week's episode I chat with Scott Whittlestone who finished 3rd overall, and his 2 support crew members, Grant Carter-Moore and Mark Taylor about last year's event. We talk about the Xtri concept, training for events like this, the essential and valuable roles of the support crew and the event itself, as well as: Cold water swim training in 3ºC Want to be part of the support crew - how much pressure do you like?

Port Macquarie local Melinda Cockshutt, racing in the female 30-34 agegroup took out 3rd female overall in a time of 9.50. Melinda works, she is a mother of two young children and not only that, her husband Todd was also racing and he finished in 10.55. What you can say, except for WOW? I love the show!! Thanks and keep up the great workWebsite of the WeekToby sent through this weeks website: www.responsiblesporting.org Here’s what he said. Hi guys ... not ironman specific, but a good initiative in the US - and they're starting with triathlons (think the guys who set it up seem to be triathletes mainly so they're starting there). Press release (see bottom of this email) was reported on Xtri two weeks ago. The Council for Responsible Sport is setting up a set of standards for races to be stamped as environmentally responsible. Great news, as to my knowledge most races DON'T do this kind of thing yet, certainly not formally. Would be good to see a few of the IM distance races looking at this kind of thing.
