We Do This Till It Free's Us. Exploring Mariam Kaba's book on Abolition as a Practice and Transformative Justice

It's Black History Month and I'm sharing 4 Authors who wrote 4 books who have impacted my personal and professional life. This week we are exploring Mariam Kaba's book We Do This Til It Free's Us. It offers an excellent overview of Abolition, why it's important, why defunding the police is practical and necessary and why and how we can use transformative justice in our own lives to create the world we want to live in. It's a great book with several facts and figures. New York Times Bestseller “Organizing is both science and art. It is thinking through a vision, a strategy, and then figuring out who your targets are, always being concerned about power, always being concerned about how you're going to actually build power in order to be able to push your issues, in order to be able to get the target to actually move in the way that you want to.” What if social transformation and liberation isn't about waiting for someone else to come along and save us? What if ordinary people have the power to collectively free ourselves? In this timely collection of essays and interviews, Mariame Kaba reflects on the deep work of abolition and transformative political struggle. With a foreword by Naomi Murakawa and chapters on seeking justice beyond the punishment system, transforming how we deal with harm and accountability, and finding hope in collective struggle for abolition, Kaba's work is deeply rooted in the relentless belief that we can fundamentally change the world. As Kaba writes, “Nothing that we do that is worthwhile is done alone.” You can find out more about Ms. Kaba here https://bcrw.barnard.edu/fellows/mariame-kaba/ and her book here https://amzn.to/3l65UTB Let me know what you think on social media and take a peak at my other offerings here https://linktr.ee/cloudedcompass

It's Black History Month so I'm sharing Author's who have impacted my life significantly and sharing them with YOU. bell hooks has influenced my life for the last 20 years.  This book, however, is an underutlized resource for how to heal the lack of compassion and hope we have in our world.  A New York Times bestseller and enduring classic, All About Love is the acclaimed first volume in feminist icon bell hooks' "Love Song to the Nation" trilogy.  All About Love reveals what causes a polarized society, and how to heal the divisions that cause suffering. Here is the truth about love, and inspiration to help us instill caring, compassion, and strength in our homes, schools, and workplaces. “The word ‘love' is most often defined as a noun, yet we would all love better if we used it as a verb,” writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love. Here, at her most provocative and intensely personal, renowned scholar, cultural critic and feminist bell hooks offers a proactive new ethic for a society bereft with lovelessness--not the lack of romance, but the lack of care, compassion, and unity. People are divided, she declares, by society's failure to provide a model for learning to love. As bell hooks uses her incisive mind to explore the question “What is love?” her answers strike at both the mind and heart. Razing the cultural paradigm that the ideal love is infused with sex and desire, she provides a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for individuals and for a nation. The Utne Reader declared bell hooks one of the “100 Visionaries Who Can Change Your Life.” All About Love is a powerful, timely affirmation of just how profoundly her revelations can change hearts and minds for the better. Today I'm introducing you to Adrienne Maree Brown and her book, which can be found here: https://www.akpress.org/we-will-not-cancel-us.html I do so in effort to raise consciousness of our collective Soul Wounds and how they are expressing themselves in our current environment. "Cancel or call-out culture is a fraught topic these days. Originating as a way for marginalized and disempowered people to address harm and take down powerful abusers, often with the help of social media, it is seen by some as having gone too far. But what is “too far” when you're talking about imbalances of power and patterns of harm? And what happens when people in social movements direct our righteous anger inward at one another? In We Will Not Cancel Us, movement mediator adrienne maree brown reframes the discussion for us, in a way that points to possible paths beyond our impasse. Most critiques of cancel culture come from outside the milieus that produce it, sometimes even from its targets. Brown explores the question from a Black, queer, and feminist viewpoint that gently asks, how well does this practice serve us? Does it prefigure the sort of world we want to live in? And, if it doesn't, how do we seek accountability and redress for harm in ways that reflect our values?"
