The one and only Robbie Koenig returns to the show to discuss a dramatic time in pro tennis, with Matteo Berrettini among several players to hoist a title. Koenig recaps the Italian player's triumph in Gstaad, a pair of first-time title winners in Marcos Giron & Nuno Borges, and the form that Rafael Nadal had in a run to the final in Bastad. The commentator also breaks down how Arthur Fils stood tall over Alexander Zverev in his home tournament, Diana Shnaider winning a title on all three surfaces in 2024, and why Ben Shelton has to work on one tricky area of his game to realize his full potential. And then Brett Connors joins from Connecticut, where he's producing Olympic tennis beginning on Saturday. Connors previews all of the top storylines in the Paris games, from Rafael Nadal & Carlos Alcaraz's potential as a doubles team to Andy Murray's final event of his career. The TC producer and host of the "Advantage Connors" podcast also assesses the women's field with Iga Swiatek as a prohibitive favorite on the Roland Garros courts, and he examines Novak Djokovic's pursuit of the only thing missing from his trophy case, an Olympic Gold Medal. Lots of beautiful tennis this week! Arthur Fils became the newest exterminator and won Hamburg for his second ATP title. But it wasn't without its drama. In the coastal Bastad, we saw the man, the myth, the legend, Rafael Nadal, putting in the hours. But ultimately, it was Nuno Borges who took home the trophy! Of course, most of our episode is dedicated to Matteo Berrettini's win in Gstaad! He defeated Quentin Halys (Con-ton, Al-ees) in less than an hour. And finally, in Newport we had an all-American clash but Marcos Giron wins his first title and right in time for his 31st birthday! Plus, we can't help but speculate on the room assignments for the Olympics and talk about the Forty-Love deuxmoi story that took Twitter by storm this week. The Daily Dog is your home for Underdog picks for Thursday. Each day host Britton Hess gives you his favorite Underdog plays for MLB, tennis, UFC, NFL and more! Subscribe for your Daily Dog! Today's show features Underdog Picks for Thursday July 4th, 3024 in Major League Baseball and the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament. The first target is top five player in the world Alexander Zverev and his match against American, Marcos Giron. Zverev is a massive favorite in the match, but he is not favorited to win in straight sets... I believe there is somewhere in the middle that will be lucrative for our Underdog picks slip. Next I find a way to go back to an old well in a new way. The White Sox are still terrible versus right handed pitchers. Ben Lively is not an elite pitcher, but I think he can take care of business... for at least an inning. Lastly, I cannot stop taking Yordan Alvarez in my slips. He is dominating in the Astros road trip to Toronto and I do not think the gravy train is going to stop against right handed pitcher Chris Bassitt. These three plays together yield a 2.73x return on your money! Lets make it THREE show slip wins in a row! The Daily Do(n)g list features some old faithful dongers and a fresh face for the list. I believe YorDONG Alvarez can make it FOUR games in a row. Manny Machado makes the dong slip for the second day in a row versus old foe Max Scherzer. Finally, its time for Ryan McMahon to go yard versus Tobias Myers and the Brewers. This Dong Flex Play yields a 53.62x return on your money if it goes 3/3, and around 9x if it goes 2/3! Aidan and Erik give a recap of the three tournaments that have happened in the weeks following the Australian Open, and discuss the unfortunately boring time of tennis that occurs after the Australian Open and before the sunshine double begins. Tennis sits in a time where small tournaments occur but with little hype or buildup for them. After discussing Tommy Paul's win in Dallas over Marcos Giron, and Ugo Humbert's win over Grigor Dimitrov, Aidan and Erik discuss what is to come in the upcoming tournaments and preview what they will be watching for. Be sure to check back next week for another episode!
On this week's Monday Match Analysis, Gill Gross dives into the championship Sunday action in Marseille, where Ugo Humbert beat Grigor Dimitrov, and Dallas, where Tommy Paul took out Marcos Giron. We'll talk about what it means that Humbert is top-10 in ELO and how he bothered Dimitrov tactically. We'll discuss Paul's elite court coverage and how he's trying to close the gap to the top-10. Finally, we'll cover a surprising title run for Cordoba qualifier Luciano Darderi. 00:00 Intro 00:45 Humbert Marseille 18:00 Paul Dallas 29:33 Darderi Cordoba
American Tommy Paul won a title on home soil as he prevailed in the Dallas Open Final against fellow countryman Marcos Giron. Listen as Jimmy Arias, Nico Pereira & Brett Haber recap Paul's victory, and what it means for the 26-year-old going forward. The hosts also recap Elena Rybakina's triumph over Daria Kasatkina in Abu Dhabi, already her 2nd title of 2024. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
VOTE FOR US, because time is running out to help us win best tennis podcast at the Sports Podcast Awards: https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/sports_category/best-tennis-podcast/ ** Tonight, James is joined by Eleanor Crooks of the Press Association to talk through the day's play. Here are the highlights. ** Australian Open, Day 3 Jack Draper required five sets to beat Marcos Giron, needed his blood pressure checked mid-match and had to seek out a courtside bin to throw up immediately after sealing victory. "I kind of felt bad because I obviously just beat the guy, and I was saying, 'I need to shake your hand, mate, but I need to get to that bin'," Draper said. Iga Swiatek came through an opening test of fire in her hunt for a first Australian Open title on Tuesday. Poland's world number one Swiatek had been handed a stern opening draw in hot and blustery conditions that made things difficult for players across the grounds. But the four-time Grand Slam champion responded in style and twice fought back from a break down to win 7-6(2) 6-2. "It wasn't the easiest first round," said Swiatek, who is now on a 17-match winning run after triumphs in Beijing and the WTA Finals last year as well as her United Cup heroics where she won five successive singles matches. "I felt off in terms of the timing. For sure the temperature was higher than any match I've played here and I needed to adjust as the balls were flying in these conditions." Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz wrapped up the third day's play with an entertaining victory over French veteran Richard Gasquet on Tuesday. Alcaraz was spared the worst of the heat as he made his return to the tournament after missing it last year. Concluding a balmy night session on Rod Laver Arena against a man who won his first ATP tour match a year before he was even born, the 20-year-old Alcaraz won 7-6(5) 6-1 6-2. The young Spaniard, wearing a sleeveless vest top, was given a run for his money by 131-ranked Gasquet who produced some signature backhand winners to get within two points of taking the opening set in the tiebreak. But Alcaraz responded to reel off three successive points and once he had the first set in his pocket he cruised. "I didn't have good run the years that I played here but I felt really well today," Alcaraz, who is making his third appearance at the year's opening Grand Slam, told American former great John McEnroe on court. "I struggled a bit in the first set and Richard was playing great but in the end I think I played quite a good level." He will face Italian Lorenzo Sonego in round two. And former US Open champion Emma Raducanu made an encouraging return to the Grand Slam stage after surgery as she outplayed American Shelby Rogers for a 6-3 6-2 win. Double Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka was made to work hard by Italian Camila Giorgi before the 18th seed from Belarus prevailed 6-1 4-6 6-3. Learn more about your ad choices. With the first ATP Masters 1000 of the year, the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells just around the corner, this week we are all-American. We here from in-form Tommy Paul, we go behind-the-scenes with Sebastian Korda and start with a California native who recently reached the quarter-finals in Acapulco and before that the semi-finals in Dallas, Marcos Giron. Finally, in the week where so much has gone on in eastern Europe that so many of us are struggling to comprehend, we have a deeply personal piece with Serb Dusan Lajovic remembering his war-torn early years.
Rafael Nadal, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, has taken out Marcos Giron and Yannik Hanfmann in straight sets, and now stares down Karen Khachanov in Round 3 at the 2022 Australian Open, after an extraordinary run-up to the tournament that saw world #1 and 9-time champion Novak Djokovic deported from Australia. Nadal has looked sharp if not perfect in his first two matches, but does he have a chance to win and overtake Djokovic and Roger Federer in the Grand Slam tally? Gill, Amy and guest host Alex Gruskin of Cracked Racquets break down Nadal's matches so far and draw ahead. Then they discuss Rafael Nadal's pressroom response to the Novak Djokovic saga. We have a North American feel to things this week as we gear up for life in the desert and Indian Wells in October! Throughout the course of the show we will hear from two Americans both putting together very impressive seasons in Brandon Nakashima and Marcos Giron and we're also in the Tennis United camp where American WTA star Jennifer Brady joined forces with Canada's top ranked player Felix Auger-Aliassime to swap coaching tips, but first and on the theme of coaching, Jill Craybas has been spending time with Team Korda. Seb's parents Petr and Regina are always on hand, that is no mean team in itself, Andre Agassi is on speed dial, but the man looking after the day-to-day with Seb is Dean Goldfine and he's been speaking with Jill.
