Ed Conroy, a Toronto-based cultural historian and the creator of Retrontario, joins the show for a look back at the 40th anniversary of Pay TV in Canada. On February 1, 1983, Canada's first Pay TV channels arrived on the airwaves to great fanfare: Competing movie services First Choice and Superchannel offered subscribers blockbuster movies "uncut and commercial free" while the more refined C Channel offered more highbrow fare: world cinema, opera, theatre and concerts. First Choice distinguished itself from the other services by offering adult entertainment (softcore nudity on the soap opera “Loving Friends and Perfect Couples” and late night Playboy Channel programming, co-productions that controversially qualified as Canadian Content). But Pay TV was not a success out of the gate, leading to C Channel going off the air within weeks and First Choice eventually having to merge with Superchannel (Canadians know the service now as Crave). Ed and I take the listener on a tour of this chapter in television history, when uncut movies in your home were a novelty in the days before VCRs were commonplace, and the thrill of being exposed to exciting illicit programming, bringing Canadian teenagers in the eighties an at-home crash course in high and low film culture. And while it may seem like Deborah's success came easy to her, nothing could be further from the truth. Rather, she's overcome a number of challenges in her life to get to where she is today but what is true, and a part of her character, is her willingness to take risks, maintain a positive attitude, and never take ‘no' for an answer.Deborah grew up as a latch-key in a broken working - class home but before her family fell apart, her earliest dream was to become an ice-skating athlete and to compete in the Olympics. From the age of seven when she first put on ice skates, Deborah was willing to practice each morning from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. and then again, after school, for several hours a day to master her figure eights.Unfortunately, her dreams came to an end when her parents divorced and she and her sister and mother were separated. All throughout high school, she worked at minimum wage jobs to pay for her clothing, school supplies and necessities as her father did not provide any financial support. Her first job was working in a flower shop at a cemetery, then as a fast-food waitress and a drugstore clerk. As these jobs took their toll on her ability to do her schoolwork, her grades fell and her almost dropped out of high school. However, she was able to negotiate a solution with her teacher and managed to graduate with the rest of her class. This was her first experience with learning to never to take “no” for an answer.Pursuing her interest in dance, Deborah won the audition to join the USFL cheerleading squad in their first year and then went on to join a professional dance company touring Japan. After that ended, she returned to Los Angeles and began her modeling career which led to the famous Playboy audition. This audition was a major game changer for Deborah. After being asked to pose as a centerfold, she was then invited to also grace the cover of the, then, leading men's magazine in the world for the March and April 1990 issues. These two projects launched Deborah's “star quality” and led to new opportunities as a Video Jockey (VJ) for the Playboy Channel's “Hot Rock,” and appearances in several rock videos.In order to improve her acting ability, Deborah signed up for the two-year Meisner Acting Techniques program at world-renown Baron Brown acting studio. After completing that program, she went on to new roles in TV and film as a member of the Screen Actors Guild.Marriage and children then followed and for a while, Deborah put aside her acting career to focus on her family. However, when her marriage ended, she found herself having to support her three children. Returning to the working world, Deborah took whatever jobs she could find in her new home of Park City, Utah. Over the next five years, she served as the manager of a day spa and then a residential realtor for the second home market -- until the market crashed in 2008.Realizing that she had to reinvent herself, Deborah took a big risk: after a chance meeting with an executive in the print procurement industry, she asked for the opportunity to try her hand in global print sales. For this, she used her wealth of contacts in the entertainment business to open doors for this company, and then followed that up with her persistent winning attitude. Her meetings with high-level power brokers paid off, almost immediately, and she was able to turn her part-time position into the role of Vice President of Business Development within a year, making inroads that the company had never before achieved.Deborah's transition into the insurance world started off in the same vein – with a challenge to herself. Despite her personal insecurities about being new in the business, Deborah put in long hours of study. Keying into her business contacts in the entertainment arena, she began to build her book of business very rapidly. By the end of her first year, she was a top producer, followed by ongoing years of membership in the Million Dollar Roundtable, Top of the Table, and as a contributing member in Leadership for Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU).Deborah's clients have included movie studio moguls, celebrities, Fortune 500 leaders, and high net-worth individuals. From what she has learned in her ten years in the insurance industry, and from where she has come, Deborah's goal is to provide financial guidance to her clients, treating each with respect and remaining available for their needs.Over the past two decades, Deborah has worked on her inner reserves, as well, participating as a member of Tony Robbins' Platinum Lions Partnership. So buckle up!Several years ago, my wife and I traveled to ten countries to make a documentary about human trafficking, followed by a 150-city LIVE tour and TV broadcasts in fourteen countries. During our film trip, we met former traffickers, formerly enslaved children, politicians, undercover pimp busters, all sorts.Two strange things kept popping up:Cops told us they often find video camera equipment when they raid brothels.Formerly prostituted women told us that men often came into their brothels with cell phones, showed them porn clips, and said they wanted to replicate certain acts.As people who cared a lot about preventing human trafficking, we knew we needed to go upstream and make a documentary about pornography addiction.So we did.We traveled all over America to interview some of the nation's top porn stars and former porn stars, neuroscientists, pro-porn industry advocates, former sex offenders, addiction therapists, politicians, elite researchers, child addicts, and more.The result was Over 18: A Documentary About Pornography.First exposureI first saw porn when I was ten years old.I was babysitting for a couple in our church. The kid was asleep, it was stormy outside, and I was watching the NBA All-Star game. Lightning must've hit a cable box somewhere because suddenly I was watching the Playboy Channel — and they didn't have the Playboy Channel.I turned it off and rushed to the front door to make sure no one was around. Coast clear, I returned and put on the TV, watching with fascination and confusion. About ten minutes later, it popped back to the All-Star game. I didn't see porn again until I moved out of home and got my own computer, but by then, I had the tools to protect myself from addiction.The simple scienceAccording to the neuroscientists we interviewed for our documentary, the science behind porn addiction is pretty basic. You aren't technically getting addicted to porn or food or gambling, it's the dopamine that your brain's after.When you watch porn, you get a nice little ~200% dopamine spike to your nucleus accumbens, your brain's reward center. It's roughly equivalent to a shot of morphine. It feels really nice.But here's the problem: the neuroscientists explained that the cerebral cortex — that forward-thinking, future-planning, self-defending bit of brain mush — doesn't fully develop in boys until their early to mid-twenties.The average boy first sees porn at age eleven, but his cerebral cortex won't fully form for another ten or more years, meaning he has no way to protect himself from addiction for more than a decade.So what do we do?We stuff a smartphone in a kid's pocket and tell them not to look at porn. It's worse than giving them a pack of cigarettes and telling them not to smoke.Porn todayPorn has always existed, but the commercial porn industry is just… wait for it… 69 years old.The first legal piece of porn in America was the inaugural issue of Playboy back in December 1953. It contained a few topless pinups.Today's average porn scene involves multiple men pounding a woman orally, vaginally, and anally before ejaculating on her face.And 93% of boys and 62% of girls see this before age eighteen.Not only is it illegal to show porn to children, but it's deeply harmful:The majority of porn scenes depict physical, verbal, or sexual aggression or violence toward women, desensitizing viewers to violence and normalizing subservient behavior.Some children take it offline. We've met a number of parents and have heard countless stories of children assaulting other children.Tens of millions of children have started sending and requesting sexts from their classmates, pressuring others while inadvertently creating and distributing child pornography.Sexual templating imprints attractions on young brains that can be hard to shake. The top number-specified porn search is age 13 — and when boys are imprinting their brains to sexualized images of children, some will continue to seek out those visuals when they're over the age of eighteen. (On a personal note, I've now met three men who've served jail time for past child porn offenses; all are now living in victory and recovery. But what of the victimized children?)When your brain is trained to love pixels on a screen, it can lead to serious offline challenges, including porn-induced erectile dysfunction — there are literally tens of thousands of young men who've lost the ability to perform with a real-world partner because their brains only activate an erection or orgasm to screen-based images.I've never seen porn on a cell phone… because I don't own a cell phone. But if my parents had foolishly given me a smartphone at age ten or thirteen, there's no way I wouldn't be addicted to porn today. Pornography is wildly addictive, and the draw is understandably strong for all of us. What will the future look like if we continue to allow porn addiction to secretly rule our societies?Where we go from hereWhile the DSM-5 doesn't yet officially consider porn addiction or sex addiction as true disorders — but it's a bit like the economist who's so deep into the data that they forget about money and how it affects people in real life. The millions of children and teens who are experiencing overwhelming cravings know the reality of porn's true power. Our best guess is that unbiased scientific research in the nascent field of addiction will almost certainly confirm the truth in the years ahead.In the meantime, there are three necessary components to ridding our society of the blight of commercialized screen-based pornography:Age verificationFirst things first: We need meaningful age verification. Even the porn stars we interviewed agreed that clicking the “Are you over 18?” button isn't enough. You can't buy alcohol or cigarettes or drive a car without real age verification, so why should children be allowed to addict themselves to hardcore sexual violence?No, this isn't a violation of free speech. But this doesn't have to be a privacy-violating nightmare where the government suddenly knows who all's looking at what.Interestingly, Mindgeek — the shadowy offshore monopoly that rules the world of pornography — has already invented a technology to safely and securely verify adults without compromising privacy. Every nation needs to mandate meaningful age verification immediately if we care at all for our children's mental health and long-term sexual wellbeing.EducationCurrent addicts, parents, and children deserve to know what they're up against. Porn, sexting, age verification, and addiction prevention should be a part of school curricula, regularly addressed in order to protect our children from a world of pain and regret.Cultural transformationWhat kind of a world do we want to live in?Clearly, homo sapiens are not adapted for screen technology and shouldn't center life around it, nor are we any match for the addiction algorithms that rule the Internet, or the buzzy dopamine hit that porn provides.Do we really want to raise a generation with such a low view of sex and humanity? Aren't we more than just sexual objects?Eventually, society will wake up to the realization that the pornography industry is just another capitalist trick, a way of commodifying the human body and hijacking our nervous systems for a quick profit.We'll also realize that pornography is deeply harmful to civil society and our children. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 65 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This time around, we dip into the weird and varied collection that is Playboy’s Inside Out anthology series, starting - appropriately enough - with the first volume, and joining us in this venture is the great Bobby, from the Grindbin Podcast. We talk about the background of the series, and its links to music videos, and music video legends like Nigel Dick, David Fincher, and more! Even more amazingly (for some of the cast, at least) we talk about its links to EA’s SSX snowboarding series of video games - the greatest snowboarding games ever made! Each of the four volumes released by Playboy contain 9 shorts. For one thing, this means that only 37 shorts ever made to home video, out of the 74 produced for the series when it aired on the Playboy Channel. For another thing, this means there’s a heck of a lot of actors and directors involved in even one of these videos, so in the interests of brevity, we’ve cut the Softcore Spotlight this time around. However, you’ll still hear about the background of creators like incredible writer-director Lizzie Borden, Hellbound: Hellraiser II director Tony Randel, Supergirl TV series creator Ali Adler, and Alexander Payne, who went on to direct Election and Sideways (also weirdly he co-wrote Jurassic Park III with Jim Taylor, who also works with him here). I had a conversation with Dan Cummins, a comedian whose work I've really admired for a few years now, and I walked away with an even greater admiration for the guy. He's a super-hard worker who has more than one pot cooking on the stovetop. Dan has a new album out this weekend, Don't Wake the Bear, and I fully expected our conversation to mostly cover comedy and the aforementioned project. Although we do get treated to a few behind-the-bits anecdotes (I'm still shocked at how much of his material is actually true and not just generated for the laugh), I had no idea what else Dan had going (perhaps a result of my minimal research). Dan pulls back the curtain and lets us know what it's like to work as a host for a show on the Playboy Channel, being a writer (yes, a writer) for reality TV, and his comedian-bingo confession at a now-defunct Indiana comedy club. It's a great conversation with a really good guy that I think you'll enjoy. .

It's Called A Heart (Extended) - Depeche Mode Notes and other random things: I hope this time around I will get to do some notes on some of the tracks in this episode. I'm guessing most would rather hear the music than read a bunch of ramblings from a guy stuck in the 80s, but I'll do my best to keep the total package intact. I do want to quickly point out to readers/listeners that this episode did manage to earn an "Explicit" tag due to some thematic issues in a couple of the songs. While the language is generally fine, there is one "slut" outburst in the Berlin tune and some sketchy noises in a couple of the songs typically associated with carnal activities. Just wanted any parents out there to be aware should you feel like playing this mix in the car or somewhere where inquisitve and/or impressionable kids might be within earshot. Berlin and Beloved are the problematic songs, so just fast-forward through those if you're concerned. On to the songs ... Leading off things is a Bomb The Bass remix of the DM classic, "Strangelove". It's an appropriate first track, I suppose, as the song was the first single off the Music for the Masses album, which was released in 1987. While eminently successful at that point in their career, it's probably the album that nudged DM toward super-stardom, an interesting turn of events considering the band chose the album name as a lark, a snide dismissal of the suggestion that they create more commercially successful music. While the compositions on the album were more sparsely arranged than previous albums and darker in tonality, the album was a critical and commercial success, effectively making DM a musical fixture among the masses, something they jokingly embraced in selecting the title. As for the song itself, it was originally a high-energy pop song, but Mute founder and producer Daniel Miller thought the overall feel of the track wasn't a good fit for the album. Miller's remixed version is the one that shows up on Music for the Masses. Bomb The Bass, by the way, is the one-man audio production team, Tim Simenon. Simenon found early success in the mid-80s as a musician creating drum tracks and basslines, then "bombing" them with a variety of samples and noises. His first single, "Beat Dis", which contained 72 samples including bits and pieces from Public Enemy to Ennio Morricone to anything in between, was one of the first tracks to introduce sampling into the musical vernacular. "World in Motion" was a song written by New Order in support of England's 1990 FIFA World Cup campaign. Believe it or not, the tune still stands as New Order's only #1 hit on the UK singles charts, holding the top spot for 2 consecutive weeks. The song is credited to ENGLAND New Order, most likely because members of that era's football (soccer) team, including left-winger and future hall-of-famer, John Barnes, contributed vocals and rapping to the song. Last year, a blog entry in NME magazine celebrated the 25th anniversary of perhaps the greatest sports-themed anthem of all time with a look at ten "geeky" facts about the song. I've reposted them below. 1. New Order drummer Steve Morris claims the band's manager, Tony Wilson, tricked the FA and the band into working with each other. "Knowing Tony, he probably sold them the idea of us doing a song and then told us the FA had come up with the brilliant idea." 2. In fact, he and instrumentalist Gillian Gilbert initially thought the offer of making the song was a joke. They had another offer of work on the table – with director Michael Powell – but eventually chose to delay that until the following year. Later, on the day they started recording 'World in Motion', they received a phone call saying Powell had died. "We made the right decision," they said. "We'd have looked like proper charlies working with a dead director." 3. Gilbert and Morris were actually pretty crucial to the song – the track was adapted from one of their compositions as The Other Two, which was originally written for BBC's 'Reportage'. 4. At the time, when NME asked footballer John Barnes how excited he was to be collaborating on a football song, he responded: "If I thought it was going to be the same as the usual crap, why bother? But this is alright." Barnes' rap was written by the man himself and performed - legend has it - in one take. 5. When the FA heard "love's got the world in motion", they asked the band to replace "love's" with "we've". The band refused. "It's an anti-hooligan song", they said. Too right. 6. Morris, in a crisis of ambiguity, called coming up with the lyrics a "nightmare", because he wanted to avoid any association with football violence while being cheeky enough that "if it all went pear-shaped, at least we could say it was a joke." He later said, "I couldn't imagine it being anything other than 'World Cup Willy', but Keith Allen got involved and made it funny." 7. Keith Allen, who co-wrote 'World In Motion', wanted it to be called 'E for England', with lyrics that ran: "E is for England, England starts with E / We'll all be smiling when we're in Italy." The FA vetoed the decision. Looking back at it in 1993, he was diplomatic: "I think at the time there were certain drug-related overtones that didn't appeal to either Top of the Pops or the record company." Allen was later involved in 1998 unofficial England song 'Vindaloo'. 8. At the time the song was released, lead singer Bernard Sumner told NME, "This should be the last straw for Joy Division fans." Make of that what you will. 9. Reflecting on the song years later, Morris said that it may have changed football. "It did come at a bit of a turning point for football. Until that point it was all very laddish. After 'World in Motion' everybody got a bit loved-up with it." 10. Barnes recently revealed that he had to do a rap-off with Paul Gascoigne, Steve McMahon, Peter Beardsley and Des Walker before he was picked to perform the rap. The question is - did Gazza cry when he lost out that time too? By the way, the song that would knock "World in Motion" from it's lofty perch at #1? "Sacrifice" by Elton John. For shame! Produced by the great Trevor Horn and appearing on the album Introspective, as well as being one of the longest tracks in their musical repertoire, "Left to My Own Devices" by the Pet Shop Boys was intended to be an "experiment in seeing how mundane a pop song could be, before setting it against extravagant music," according to lead singer Neil Tennant. No doubt, the song adds touches of classical music, specifically orchestral phrases culled from Claude Debussy's "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" ("Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun"), to the proceedings. However, this mundane song is rife with supposedly biographical or semi-biographical information from Tennant's youth that he ambiguously puts on display topped off with an idiomatic title. Whether lyrics about "roundheads" (a reference to Pro-Parliamentary forces in the English civil war) the sun and brochures and Che Guevara are self-referential terms about the Boys' "alternative" lifestyles is a matter of conjecture and I'll leave it to smarter people than myself to pour over the details. Frankly, I don't care what the meaning. I prefer just to listen and enjoy. In a previous episode, I mentioned the numerous contributions of Nick Rhodes to the success of Duran Duran. Perhaps his biggest was that of a visionary as he quickly seized on the potential of the music video. He was the one who pushed the band toward more elaborate productions, a somewhat questionable decision at the dawn of the 80s as the phenomenon that would come to be known as MTV was still months away from its eventual August 1, 1981 launch date. Not to mention, at that time, nobody could have actually predicted the overwhelming success of the network and the lasting impact it would have on the music industry. Released in July of 1981, "Girls On Film" was the third single from Double D's self-titled album. Interestingly, it was the band that chose the song to be their third single after a dismal showing by the second single, "Careless Memories", a song that had been selected by their label, EMI. Though "Careless Memories" reached #37 in the UK, it was perceived as a failure because the first single, "Planet Earth", had been a Top 20 hit. "Careless Memories" was also the song chosen to herald the soon-to-be released full-length album. That the band chose "Girls On Film", a staple at live performances, as the group's third single was fortuitous. It helped album sales overseas, though it did not initially chart in the US. After the follow-up success of the Rio album in 1982, their first album was re-issued in the states in 1983 and became certified platinum in 1985. While the song is no doubt a great one, it was the video, which was originally filmed in 1981 a few weeks prior to the launch of MTV, that made serious waves and caused serious consternation among parents and network censors. The uncut version circulated regularly on the Playboy Channel as it was deemed too pornographic for MTV. It was also banned on the BBC. A heavily-edited "day" version was created for regular airplay and is the one with which most of us are familiar. And though the song had already achieved chart success, it was that video, directed by Godley & Creme, that kept people talking and kept the band firmly in the public eye. Simon Le Bon would later lament that the scandalous nature of the video obscured the message of the song, which was about the exploitation of models in the fashion industry. To end this episode, I figured I'd include the most reviled song in the Depeche Mode catalog. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but both Martin Gore and Alan Wilder have, on numerous occasions, described "It's Called A Heart" as their least favorite single ever recorded by DM. Wilder admitted he was "anti even recording, let alone releasing it". So, why the high level of disdain for the song? Seems the band, especially Wilder, thought that the b-side, "Fly On The Windscreen" was a stronger song and should have been released as the band's next single at the time. Apparently, the record label didn't like the fact the first word of the song was "death". Yet Wilder argues: "I fought tooth-and-nail on behalf of the B-side Fly on the Windscreen which was far superior. To me, the whole thing was a serious backward step. I felt we'd worked diligently to build up recognition for a harder sound, with more depth and maturity, and here was this ultra poppy number that did nothing for our reputation." When asked in an interview if he could turn back time and do something over again, Wilder responded: "I don't think I'd change much, apart from some of the hair styles and those daft boots I wore in 101. Oh, and I'd also make sure that I missed my wake-up call on the day we made the video for It's Called a Heart." Wilder says of the video concept, "Quite how [Peter Care, the director] equated 'calling something a heart' with twirling cameras around on the end of a string in a field of corn in Reading dressed in a skirt, I'll never be able to tell you." Wilder hated the song so much that he answered the question "In your opinion, what makes up a true DM fan?" with "Anyone who still gives us the time of day after having heard It's Called a Heart". Remixes didn't fare much better in Wilder's eyes. He once commented on the "Slow Mix" version of the song, "...you do need to be particularly devout to endure it - slowing it down to half speed made it twice as long - probably not a very good idea - twice the agony." Okay, so Alan Wilder doesn't particularly care for the song, but I LOVE IT! And since I'm curating this podcast, I included all 7+ minutes of the Extended Mix for your listening enjoyment.
