Send us a Text Message.Remember those books you read in the summer when you were young? Kids fighting evil in their small town? Bikes, and blood brothers and promises to keep?  If you love those kinda stories then you're in good company. This week Jonathan Janz joins me to talk about the coming-of-age horror in his ongoing epic, Children of the Dark. Book One was rereleased earlier this year, just in time for the sequel The Nightflyer's to continue the story of Will Burgess and the monstrous secrets in his backyard.  As well as a whole lot of chat about favourite movies, a million book recommendations and Jonathan's beautifully wholesome horror movie bond with his daughter – we also discuss the canon of coming of age horror, how to write honestly about childhood, the role of theme in a story, and where Jonathan's monsters originated. Climb up to our treehouse. The basics of many songs we know and love…The bridge occupies a special spot in that structure as it is a musical idea that adds contrast from the repetitive verse and chorus sections by providing musical variation that makes a song more exciting. Think of it as a transitional section. The great songwriters have used bridges to make ok songs, into amazing and memorable ones.  And…. Those are the ones we are going to discuss today as we give you our favorite Bridges in Songs! Allison Russell & Aoife O'Donovan talk about the songwriting process as full-time moms. Hint: there's not a process.“We're working moms, so the best undisturbed time is between midnight and 4am.”—Allison Russell“I'm not the ‘lounge around' type of person. There's not one wasted hour in my day.” —Aoife O'DonovanRussell and O'Donovan are full-time songwriters of course, but they're moms first. So what you won't hear in our conversation is how wonderful it is to wake up, have a leisurely cup of coffee, lounge on the couch with a guitar, and write undisturbed. Songwriting ritual? What's that? What you will hear is the phrase “we're working moms” several times from both of them. You'll hear how Russell writes between midnight and 4am because it's often the only alone time she has. You'll hear how she develops melodies and plays beats on her body while she's in the shower—and how the shower was where she went to cry when she was a new mother. You'll hear how O'Donovan gets so many of her song ideas while she's running; sure, exercise spurs creativity, but it's also alone time. You'll hear how the practicalities of being a parent and full-time songwriter involve driving kids places and being without childcare and trying to help with schoolwork—all while trying to write an album. And you'll hear how during the early stages of the pandemic they were managing school lessons over Zoom, and how in the heck can you write songs when your kids are home and your time is someone else's? It's no wonder O'Donovan told me there are no wasted hours in her day and that she writes best while her body is in motion. Because when you're a working mom, when is it not in motion? Despite their limited time, both women have put out fantastic music recently. Russell's first solo album Outside Child has been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Americana Album, and the single “Nightflyer” has been nominated for two GRAMMYs in Best Americana Roots Performance & Best Americana Roots Song. O'Donovan has a fantastic new album Age of Apathy. The song “Prodigal Daughter” features Allison Russell.

The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, we launch season 4 of the show with a bilingual banjo-slinging singer-songwriter originally from Montreal and now based in Nashville: Allison Russell. After two decades of quietly creating heart-on-her-sleeve roots music in hard-touring groups like Po' Girl, Birds Of Chicago, and recently the supergroup Our Native Daughters - playing the guitar, clarinet, banjo and singing in English and French - the spotlight finally fell straight on Russell in 2021. With the help of her husband and longtime creative partner JT Nero, she released her visceral debut solo record Outside Child which confronts her traumatic childhood head on. Rarely has an album struck such a nerve in the Americana community, as songs like “4th Day Prayer” use the slippery soul of Al Green's best work and Mahalia Jackson's gospel inspiration to paint in white-knuckled detail how she escaped the abusive home of her stepfather for the graveyards and streets of Montreal. As she tells us in the intense conversation from her home in Tennessee, it was her songwriting hero Brandi Carlisle who went to bat for her (a bold Instagram DM set fate in motion,) helping get her raw, unreleased songs to Fantasy Records. Thankfully, they wanted to take a leap. Even President Obama noticed after the songs began to circulate and he put her ominous radio standout “Nightflyer” on his favorite songs of the year list. The album has since been nominated for three Grammy awards.  While Allison may feel like an “overnight sensation” to those just discovering her on AAA radio, hearing her soaring voice shining on stages from Carnegie Hall, Red Rocks and the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she's been playing hundreds of shows in small clubs and festivals around the world for twenty-two years and counting. It hasn't been an easy road, as she often had to her young daughter on the trail with her. With a new book deal in the works continuing her story where Outside Child left off, there is much more to come from Russell. A champion for the often forgotten victims of domestic and sexual abuse, listening to Russell speak reminds one more of a fiery community organizer than a singer. Did your host try and convince Russell to run for office? Maybe.Stick around to hear her dive into one of her favorite tracks from the new record, the hopeful clarinet shuffle “Poison Arrow."Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-show-on-the-road-with-z-lupetin1106/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

She'll discuss her debut solo album, Outside Child, her long journey in the music industry leading to this moment, and her escape from childhood trauma to find resilience, joy, and healing through the art of music. PART ONEPaul and Scott discuss the worst songs they love, pay tribute to the late songwriting legend Dallas Frazier, and revisit the idea of musical discovery's happy accidents. PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with three-time Grammy nominee Allison RussellABOUT ALLISON RUSSELLCanadian-born singer-songwriter Allison Russell released her debut solo album Outside Child in 2021, but has been part of the music world for many years. She formed the band Po' Girl with Trish Klein of The Be Good Tanyas in 2003 before launching the duo Birds of Chicago with her partner JT Nero in 2012. In 2018, she joined the musical collective Our Native Daughters, which also includes Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Amythyst Kia. Outside Child is a highly personal album chronicling Russell's formative experiences as a survivor of physical and sexual abuse, while highlighting themes of hopefulness and resilience that have resonated with fans and critics. The project earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album, while the single “Nighflyer” earned Allison nominations for Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song. Additionally, she has been nominated for four Canadian Folk Music Awards, two Americana Music Awards, and has performed on stages ranging from the Grand Ole Opry to the National Museum of African American Music to Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Brandi Carlile. Allison recently inked a deal with Flatiron Books, a division of Macmillan, which will release her forthcoming memoir.

During the episode Paul was drinking a Nightflyer Roastworks original from the farm Coco Caja in Ecuador. I was enjoying a washed Guji Ethiopian roast from Hubert St-Jean. The Coco Caja has sweet sugary notes while the Guji bean was strong note of berry with honey and tea notes. Jeff Tweedy doesn't spend a lot of time reflecting on the past. But he awakened a whole lot of it while writing his new memoir. That means he has fresh thoughts on his mind about Jay Farrar, Uncle Tupelo, the early days of Wilco, and coming into his own as a musician and producer, which is on display in his new solo album, Warm. Jeff also talks with Marc about his experiences with mood disorders, painkiller addiction, parenthood, and converting to Judaism. This episode is sponsored by YouTube Music, Nightflyers on SYFY, YouTube Music, Quip, and the New York Times Crossword App. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Martin Mull has many job titles in front of his name: Actor, musician, painter, writer, comedian. But when he was younger, struggling to make it as any of those things, he couldn't afford heat for his apartment and had to borrow an electric blanket, which he also could not afford. Martin tells Marc how things turned around, how he found himself in music circles with the likes of Harry Nilsson and John Lennon, how his comedy performances led him to friendships with the likes of Steve Martin and Fred Willard, and how he wound up acting in everything from Roseanne to Sabrina the Teenage Witch to his new show The Cool Kids. This episode is sponsored by Nightflyers on SYFY, The New Yorker, and ZipRecruiter.
