An incisive case study of changemaking in action, Stuck Improving: Racial Equity and School Leadership (Harvard Education Press, 2021) analyzes the complex process of racial equity reform within K-12 schools. Scholar Decoteau J. Irby emphasizes that racial equity is dynamic, shifting as our emerging racial consciousness evolves and as racism asserts itself anew. Those who accept the challenge of reform find themselves "stuck improving," caught in a perpetual dilemma of both making progress and finding ever more progress to be made. Rather than dismissing stuckness as failure, Irby embraces it as an inextricable part of the improvement process. Irby brings readers into a large suburban high school as school leaders strive to redress racial inequities among the school's increasingly diverse student population. Over a five-year period, he witnesses both progress and setbacks in the leaders' attempts to provide an educational environment that is intellectually, socioemotionally, and culturally affirming. Looking beyond this single school, Irby pinpoints the factors that are essential to the work of equity reform in education. He argues that lasting transformation relies most urgently on the cultivation of organizational conditions that render structural racism impossible to preserve. Irby emphasizes how schools must strengthen and leverage personal, relational, and organizational capacities in order to sustain meaningful change. Stuck Improving offers a clear-eyed accounting of school-improvement practices, including data-driven instructional approaches, teacher cultural competency, and inquiry-based leadership strategies. This timely work contributes both to the practical efforts of equity-minded school leaders and to a deeper understanding of what the work of racial equity improvement truly entails. What's the value?
"Grace" - Decoteau Irby

"Grace is giving people permission to be human...and it provides people the opportunity to have dignity, regardless of their circumstances." Insights like these make all the time I spend doing this podcast worthwhile. The opportunity to take a concept like "grace", that we all hear all the time, and to force ourselves to reflect on what it actually means. To challenge ourselves to understand why it is so important but also why it is so hard to practice. That is what it is all about for me. Decoteau, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and founding member of Derute Consulting Cooperative (where he focuses on how to create and sustain organizations that ensure Black people's self-determined well-being), had such an interesting and thoughtful perspective on the topic. Through the discussion we started to uncover that grace is a bit of a "numbers game." Often the challenge people have exhibiting grace is that it is too scary. They are worried that they might get burned or end up worse off. And the truth is, they very well might. But what Decoteau explained is from a long-term, portfolio view, we are net better off as a society if we exhibit more grace. So the challenge becomes how do we change the conditions and systems that exist today to allow people to realize the long-term advantages of grace? As we discussed across multiple topics, housing insecurity, racism, reconstruction, the prison system; human nature seems to lean away from grace. We are engrained with a coding that pushes us towards safety and security. So in many ways it might be unrealistic to expect individuals at scale to evolve to embrace a mindset of grace. Philosophically that becomes a really interesting dynamic, because it suggests we might need to push people towards grace, even if they don't want it. "We", who believe grace is the answer, need to find ways to influence society to buy into it. But anytime we "push" people towards something we believe is "right", it creates an opportunity for exploitation and abuse of power. I loved the opportunity to get to explore these types of topic with Decoteau and hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did.

My guest today and I worked together in Club Med Paradise Island during the Winter 2002/2003 season, but his first season was in Club Med Sandpiper in February of 2001 as a Golf G.O. Originally from Vermont and now living in Indianapolis, please help me welcome, Cory DeCoteau! Cory got into golf at 10 years old because it was the family business: his parents managed a golf course. Later on, Cory played golf at a Division II university called Mercyhurst in Erie, Pennsylvania and then attended the Golf Academy of America in Orlando, Florida. Cory worked for Club Med from 2001-2005 and even went to one of my favourite villages, Club Med Ria Bintan in Indonesia, and of course we talk about our shared experience in Asia. As you can imagine, Cory has amassed lot of stories along the way and he does not hold back. Granted, his funniest stories involve injuring himself in some way, but they are worth a listen! One funny story takes place in 2002 in Cancun during a “High Potential” (hi-pot) team-building weekend that involves Cory and a once-in-a-million occurrence that I do not want to say anymore for fear of spoiling the story. And needless to say, we both think that “Caddyshack” is the greatest golf movie ever! **My First Season podcast has always been free to listen to. EASTER DREAM (1990) + THE PASSION: A BRICKFILM (2018) + JEHOVAH WITNESSES - SHOULD CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE EASTER (Web, 2014) + AN EASTER BUNNY PUPPY [TRAILER] (2013) He is risen! Is Easter Sunday one of the holiest and most treasured days of the Christian calendar, or does it represent a corruption of the church by pagan values meant to expose our kids to dangerous sex magick? We've selected a diverse program of films to help us grapple with this spiritual crisis. Our discussion begins with a handwritten letter the Jehovah's Witnesses sent to Bible Boy Scott to invite him to their “Memorial for Christ's Death” — a non-celebratory Easter alternative by the strictest of the Christian sects. Eager to know more, we watched one of the Jehovah's Witnesses' insane, text-heavy video slideshows to learn about Easter's pagan origins. We were shocked by this new information, but as media researchers, we'd be remiss to not explore different perspectives. Next we go to the Mormons, who offer one of their trademark schmaltzy, glittering, and sentimental takes on the resurrection with a family-friendly VHS tape called EASTER DREAM. We combined this with a more typically Protestant, yet decidedly atypical Easter story — Christian LEGO enthusiast Josh Carroll's notorious THE PASSION: A BRICKFILM, which uses LEGOs and copious amounts of fake blood to bring the dark story of Christ's death to the playroom floor. Finally,.we splurge on a demented, fully secular Easter romp: AN EASTER BUNNY PUPPY by David DeCoteau. DeCoteau is one of our favorite filmmakers of all time, so we take great pleasure in finally introducing our gentle listeners to his bizarre body of work. We hope this Easter Special will entertain while providing a sober reminder about spiritual vigilance on this controversial holiday. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 82 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This episode, we’re joined by our good bud Carlo, from Crud Buddies and the Notes From the Back Row podcast. And all of us are wrapped up into a fatal cuddle from the master David DeCoteau, as we check out his 1989 proto-erotic thriller Deadly Embrace! It’s sort of like an erotic thriller, in that it’s about an affair that turns deadly - a very familiar erotic thriller plot - but also there’s about 50 minutes where people mostly just talk on the phone to each other. On the plus side, it does star Jan-Michael Vincent, Linnea Quigley and Ken Abraham, and DeCoteau’s camera is all about Ken Abraham in this movie, so that at least is a lot of fun. And we talk about the film’s female lead, Mindi Miller (aka Ty Randolph). Miller was not only an actor, but also a stunt performer, model, bodybuilder and - more recently - a skin care esthetician. She also had a rather famous boyfriend in the ‘70s! As a bonus, not only do you get to hear all about that, you get to hear her (in a clip from another podcast) talk about how her ex-boyfriend can still time travel and visit her in dreams even though he’s long dead. Raiders of the Podcast

This week the return of a prolific auteur and Disney's latest butchery of a beloved modern YA classic.     Travel back with us to 1989 when David  DeCoteau had a still nice but much smaller house. The days when he would invite scream queens and their friends over to make movies in a weekend. Okay, he still totally does that but this is before he found his true niche. It doesn't make a lot of sense how Lyle Waggoner is there. Help us try to find the why of Murder Weapon.     The House of the Mouse has a long history of buying and then completely messing up well loved and known YA properties. After the ear fucking they gave Ella Enchanted trying to make it Shrek and the long weekend they kept Percy Jackson and the Olympians locked in Goofy's sex dungeon until poor Percy lost all sense of self and tried desperately to be "Harry Potter Jr"... they finally unleash their version of Artemis Fowl. SPOILERS- Your kid will hate you for making them watch it and you will hate yourself for having Disney+.... remember when everyone loved that Baby Yoda and thought signing their life away to Mickey was the best idea ever?      All that and Kevin lets his classy habits go to his head, Tyler makes his own private oasis in Idaho, Dave wonders what sin against her agent could Judi Dench possibly have committed, and Craig finally gets a Texas catheter. Portsmouth Recreation Director Rus Wilson says even rescheduling wasn’t an option. “Yeah, we get close to 20,000 people in Portsmouth,” Wilson says, “so we're not going to go anywhere near that while this is going on.” In Waterville Valley, Town Manager Mark Decoteau says he and his team tried to figure out some way their fireworks show over Corcoran Pond could go on. “Trying to control the number of cars that came into town,” Decoteau says, “having the drive-in movie approach where they could see the display and stay in their vehicles. But the bottom line was, none of them were really practical.” Director of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Kathleen Flammia, says her town is crossing its fingers and simply postponing the

Focusing on breaking down any barriers that keep new patients from coming in the door, Peter recognizes that the first barrier for a majority of people is simply knowledge – not enough people know what physical therapy is, thus your message has to recognize that. He shares aspects that make these technical such as location, insurance, and those can be further addressed after you’ve captured their attention. This time around, we're joined by Jaymz from the NBA-Straya podcast, and Josh from the terrifically popular rock and roll band Househats! And we all check out David DeCoteau's 1996 film Bikini Goddesses, in which a hapless American teenager is sent to work at his father's hotel on the Greek seaside, and manages to free three Greek demi-Goddesses from millenia of imprisonment. Except, being a DeCoteau film from the mid-'90s, Greece is actually Romania, and the teen in question is in his late 20s. Also there is literally only one other actor credited in the film and everyone else is a local whose name DeCoteau quickly forgot. At least some of the dialogue is completely unintelligible. Most of the plot happens in the first 15 minutes, and then the last 15 minutes, and the rest is interminably lengthy sex scenes. Of course, considering there were few other people of note involved, how could we do our first DeCoteau film without talking about the great man himself? Charles Band continued his father's theatrical tradition, enlisting his brother for soundtrack composition and establishing first his own Charles Band Productions, then the even more successful Empire Pictures and finally the label he's best known for, Full Moon! With a history of highly entertaining films produced on a low budget but with aesthetic values and quirky concepts that belie their financial origins, Band produced and directed over a hundred films between his late 70's debut and the early millenium, and remains active in more of a niche, rather un-Full Moonlike market to this day. We get plenty of requests here at the ERITFM ranch, but no film gets suggested to us more often than David DeCoteau’s talking animal masterpiece A TALKING CAT!?! But did you know that before A TALKING CAT!?! Eric Roberts also voiced a talking.. dog!?! Its the battle of the David DeCoteau-directed, Kristine DeBell-starring, Eric Roberts-voiced animals with A HALLOWEEN PUPPY facing off against A TALKING CAT!?! We needed to knock this one out of the park, so we recruited producer, film festival programmer and all-around movie guy Peter Kuplowsky to lend his voice – and expertise – to this deep digging discussion of DeCoteau. Grab your favorite pet and snuggle up in front of the podcast box, because it’s time for episode 9 of Eric Roberts is the Man. As always, check out ERIC ROBERTS IS THE MAN on Twitter, or come chat ER (or anything else) on our Facebook group.            There’s plenty more Peter Kuplowsky to enjoy out there! Follow him on Twitter @PeterKapow and, of course, keep your eyes out for his work at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Toronto After Dark Film Festival.
