Today, I'm chatting with Emmy Award winner Kevin Spirtas about the debut of season 3 of his 6-time Emmy Award-winning digital series, After Forever. The show stars Kevin as Brian and Mitchell Anderson (Doogie Howser, Party of Five) as Jason, a "50-ish" gay couple living in New York City who appear to have it all -- until Jason's untimely death from cancer forces Brian to think about his future and ultimately his mortality, without the love of his life. Season three finds Brian exploring therapy as a means to help him move through his grief while he also attempts to address the idea of dating again. I've known Kevin since our early days pursuing acting in New York City when he was featured in several Broadway productions, including A Chorus Line, Meet Me in St. Louis, and was the official standby for Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz. Along the way, daytime TV fans came to know Kevin through his long-running role on Days of Our Lives as “Dr. Craig Wesley.” In 2014, Kevin ran into former Days Of Our Lives writer Michael Slade in a New York gym. Eager to create their own opportunities, the two set out to create a series about gay men over 50. In 2019, After Forever—Season 1 made history by becoming the most Emmy-awarded LGBTQ-themed drama series on any platform. Kevin received an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Digital Drama, along with three additional Emmys that he shares with Michael Slade for Outstanding Digital Drama Series 2019 and Outstanding Writing Team for a Digital Drama in 2019 and 2020. The series was also honored with a special recognition award in 2021 by the GLAAD Media Awards. Season 3 of After Forever is available now on Vimeo. He may be an actor, broadway star, and producer, but that doesn't mean he is immune from the every day challenges of love, fame, and loss. In this candid interview, Kevin Spirtas shares insights of being a gay man in limelight and how he learned to unhide himself. About Kevin KEVIN SPIRTAS has become one of Hollywood's most watched talents. From Broadway Star, to TV Heartthrob… From his humble beginnings on Broadway at age 18 in A Chorus Line, to ‘standby' for Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz— Spirtas is most recognized around the world for his eight year stint as Dr. Craig Wesley from NBC/peacock Daytime Drama: Days of Our Lives, as well as the cult classic film sequels: Friday the 13th – Part VII: The New Blood, and Wes Craven's: The Hills Have Eyes – Part II. Before departing the soap in 2000, Spirtas had great fun playing his DAYS character opposite Matt LeBlanc's ‘Dr. Drake Ramory' on FRIENDS: The One That Could Have Been- Part 1. In 2008 the 30-year acting veteran produced the NY Shakespeare Festival reading-presentation of Don Cummings': A Good Smoke, starring Academy Award winning actress, Meryl Streep, and directed by Tony Award winning director, Pam McKinnon. Shortly thereafter in 2009, Spirtas made his debut as a Broadway producer on the critically acclaimed revival of Finian's Rainbow, and in 2012 he co-produced the hit Broadway musical: Priscilla…Queen of the Desert. As Spirtas' success as a Broadway producer blossomed, and grew, his passion for acting, never stopped. In 2014, after running into Days Of Our Lives alum, Michael Slade in a New York gym, the two set out to create the critically acclaimed 6 x Emmy Award Winning Digital Drama Series: AFTER FOREVER… A story about love, loss, and new beginnings. In 2019, AFTER FOREVER– Season 1 made history by becoming the first LGBTQ-themed drama series to win six Emmy awards across any platform. Spirtas received an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Digital Drama, along with 3 additional Emmys that he shares with Slade for Outstanding Digital Drama Series 2019 and Outstanding Writing Team for a Digital Drama 2019 and 2020. No matter how many Emmys Spirtas has, it's pretty safe to bet that AFTER FOREVER just might have been the very inspiration for Days of Our Lives Writers to have his character, Dr. Craig Wesley return to Salem to ‘come out' of the closet. A full circle moment for the soap opera character… And Spirtas for sure. AFTER FOREVER Season 3 - The Final Season, Begins streaming on Amazon prime late spring 2024. Vampire Radu Vladislas Talks Horror, Character and The 2023 Release of Subspecies: BloodriseEvery generation has their monsters and while the 70's and 80's saw the monsters moving away from the gothic castles of Transylvania to the suburbs, there is one monster from the 90's that reigns supreme in the mold of the classic vampires going all the way back to Max Schreck's iconic performance as Orlok in F.W. Murnau's masterwork Nosferatu.Produced in 1991 by genre royalty Charles Band's Full Moon Entertainment and directed by Full Moon veteran Ted Nicolau, Subspecies has become a beloved franchise spawning multiple excellent sequels including series highlight Bloodstone: Subspecies 2 which may be Full Moon's best film. There's a lot about Subspecies to admire from Nicolau's assured direction to the stunning location shooting in Romania and the rock-solid performances from Denice Duff and Kevin Spirtas as the heroes but the star of the show is unquestionably the series antagonist, Radu.A centuries old vampire, Radu is grotesque and vile, usually gore dripping from his fanged maw while he speaks in a rasping, decrepit voice. No matter how many conversations I have with artists, no matter how many episodes this podcast releases, I'm amazed at the variety of insights and lessons that each person brings to these discussions. But in this episode, I think we hit upon one of the biggest obstacles, if not THE biggest, that holds us back as actors and creatives--and that is fear. Being afraid of vulnerability or not making enough money or not being cast or simply not being good enough. This fear is the cause of our self-doubt and uncertainty and it can hold us back or even paralyze us from moving forward. Today, I'm talking with David Dean Bottrell, who knows all too well what fear can do to us. Though he's been in TV shows like Boston Legal and After Forever (created by former guest Kevin Spirtas), David has also battled fear as an artist and has even written a book to help us navigate the ins and outs of this business to become a Working Actor. David joins the podcast to talk about three specific examples of fear... His upbringing and the strange reaction his family had to success. The book he wrote and how completely inadequate he felt while writing it. His desire to imitate and be someone else, rather than understand or even accept his own unique talents.  Support WINMI through donations or subscriptions - https://winmi.supercast.com Podcast hosted and produced by Off-Broadway actor and singer Patrick Oliver Jones - https://www.pojones.com    This week's Artist Resource - WORKING ACTOR This veteran character actor draws on his 35+ tumultuous years of work in the entertainment industry to offer a witty, informative and very honest guide to breaking in, making a living, and making a life in the fabulous trenches of show business.   "Both practical and inspiring...open-eyed and unsentimental...This is no guru-like tome, but a hands-on, working manual written out of true experience and enthusiasm for what can be achieved.” --Alfred Molina "Weaves a lifetime's worth of experience navigating the slings and arrows of the acting game into a compilation of personal stories and pragmatic lessons to enlighten, encourage and forewarn both the novice and more advanced performer." --The Los Angeles Times   The Final Five Questions Learn more of David's journey from Louisa, Kentucky to Los Angeles and New York, as he chronicles various roles and milestones. Today I'm talking to Emmy Award winner Kevin Spirtas - who has spent years, among many other roles, playing Dr. Craig Wesley on the iconic daytime drama "Days Of Our Lives." Kevin recently returned to "Days" for a storyline that surprised many fans and, in many ways, is groundbreaking in nature. As hard core fans know by now, Dr. Craig Wesley, after many years of being married - in a heterosexual relationship - comes out as gay. And ALL kinds of drama ensues. I think the storyline itself is important because I don't believe a longtime character on a daytime drama has ever come out in mid-life like Kevin's character does here. Not only does Dr. Craig Wesley come out, but along the journey so far we meet the man he's fallen in love with, and … well, so much more. Hit the play button to hear Kevin and I chat about all the drama in Salem on "Days of Our Lives." I want to remind folks you can catch up on this entire season of "Days of Our Lives" for free on PeacockTV.com. Back in January 2022, this podcast held its first ever live event. It was a night of conversation with Emmy-winner Kevin Spirtas. He not only shared stories and struggles from his time on Broadway and television, but he also sang five songs that evening highlighting the work he has done and moments that have meant the most to him throughout his career. And so on today's episode you're going to hear a portion of this cabaret performance and discussion that was presented here in New York City at the Green Room 42. In fact, BroadwayWorld was there that night and called the evening “entertaining and informative.” They were extremely complementary of Kevin and his performance and even had a few nice things to say about me (as well as some well-deserved critiques). It was a rare chance to see Kevin Spirtas in a candid interview, opening up about personal and professional experiences that he doesn't often talk about in public. I am immensely grateful to have shared the stage with Kevin and happy to showcase a portion of our honest and frank conversation with you today. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Kevin Spirtas, Star of “Days of Our Lives” and “After Forever”, Singer, Writer and ProducerAbout Harvey's guest:Today's guest exemplifies the word “multi-talented”.  He's literally done it all:  Broadway, movies, television, and web programming.  You've  seen him on the big screen in hit movies including “Friday the 13th - Part VII: The New Blood”, “The Hills Have Eyes Part II”, “Apt Pupil”, and “Daredevil”.  On TV, he starred as Tom Gallagher in “Rituals”, and as Tim Burke on “Valley of the Dolls”, and as Jonas Chamberlain on “One Life to Live”.  But he's most recognized around the world as the dashing heartthrob, Dr. Craig Wesley from NBCs daytime drama, “Days of Our Lives”.   But there's so much more to this man.  At the age of 18, he was already appearing on Broadway in “A Chorus Line”, followed by “Meet Me in St. Louis”.  And he's appeared on stage in numerous shows including “Hairspray”, “Bye Bye Birdie” and “Into the Woods”.  He's also an award-winning writer and producer.   And when he's not filming, he can be seen touring the country in his musical one man show: “Night & Days”.  If that weren't enough, he co-wrote, produced and starred in the critically acclaimed digital TV series, “After Forever”, which won 17 awards including 6 Emmy awards. On September 12, 2005, television audiences worldwide heard Spirtas introduce the song: The Sweetest Of Nights And The Finest Of Days, as he sang it at Chloe & Brady's wedding on Days of Our Lives. On the same day he released a CD single of the song and contributes a portion of each CD sold to the RED CROSS for victims of Hurricane Katrina.Spirtas can also be seen touring the country and seven seas performing his hit musical one man show: “Night & Days”. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/http://kevinspirtas.com/https://www.facebook.com/kevin.spirtas.3http://www.twitter.com/kevinspirtashttp://www.instagram.com/kevinspirtas#KevinSpirtas  #AfterForever  #DaysOfOurLives  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Why I'll Never Make It - An Actor’s Journey

After a few weeks off, I'm so excited to be back for another year of great guests and wonderful discussions. As you can see there's a new look to the WINMI podcast artwork and logo, the WINMI blog is coming back, and live events are coming, so here's a little preview of what to expect in 2022. Sign up for the monthly WINMI Newsletter. Why I'll Never Make It Stories This year will offer a slightly different approach to conversations with fellow creatives. Guests will now be sharing three specific stories or experiences that have affected them and their careers. These defining moments will uncover personal setbacks as well as professional failures. We'll find out what kept them going and how it changed them. WINMI Goes Live Another development coming in 2022 is the introduction of live events. That's right WINMI is gonna be ON stage. The first of which is a night of conversation and song with Emmy winner Kevin Spirtas. It'll be January 28th at The Green Room 42 here in NYC, tickets start at $19 and are available for both table seating as well as online streaming for those who can't be with us in-person. Next up is BroadwayCon, an annual gathering here in New York for all things Broadway. It was originally scheduled for February, but out of an abundance of caution they postponed the conference till July. I'll be there with 5 other previous podcast guests, hosting a panel discussion about their journeys to Broadway. Reserve your spots now to attend BroadwayCon and The Green Room 42! http://tickets.winmipodcast.com Help WINMI Make It As always your support of this podcast is both needed and appreciated. One of the changes I'd like to bring to the podcast is transcribing each episode for deaf and hard-of-hearing artists. But that costs time and money, and I just don't have the resources to do it myself at this point. So please consider making a one-time donation or subscribing monthly to help make this goal a reality.  The Final Five For several seasons now guests have answered five final questions at the end of their interviews, first as part of the main feed of episodes, then as bonus episodes for those who supported WINMI. Well, I'm taking a different approach this season by turning those questions into a blog post to coincide with each guest's episode. The WINMI blog has take a bit of backseat in the past year or so, but not anymore. These Q&A's will provide new ways to reach followers and share these conversations with listeners.  So as you can see there's a lot to look forward to in 2022. Why I'll Never Make It is now a production of WINMI Media and is hosted by actor/singer Patrick Oliver Jones. Contact the podcast anytime at whyillnevermakeit@gmail.com. “I started Women in Media in 2010 as a sort of community group. We talked about women above and below the line because there weren't any organizations or conversations really happening about women in the below the line positions, meaning women in the crew who are in the camera, art, grip and electronics departments. There were only conversations happening about more women directors and, being a scenic artist and production designer, I knew that there are so many women in the crew and there's only one director. So if we only aimed for one, we would never get to parity and there would never be room like myself who wanted to advance from these crew positions.”Tema Staig is the Executive Director of Women in Media, a non-profit organization that promotes gender equality in the film and TV industry. Today I'm speaking to the oh-so-charming Kevin Spirtas - one of the co-creators, writers and stars of the acclaimed LGBTQ TV series, 'After Forever.' 'After Forever' is the recipient of 6 Daytime Emmy Awards - the most Emmy-awarded LGBTQ-themed drama series on any platform. The first two seasons of the series received rave reviews for telling the rarely seen story of vibrant, active, diverse “grown-up” gay men... a group who tend to disappear from television and film once they are no longer 20- or 30-something, not returning until they are elderly and non-sexual. The producers of the series recently released a documentary-style special episode titled, 'Riley's Unforgettable School Project.' This unique installment of the series centers around the character of Riley (Finn Douglas) who, while attending school remotely due to COVID-19, is tasked with creating a project about the most unforgettable person he's ever met. The special was shot remotely throughout the Fall of 2020 while the country continued the battle against COVID-19. The creative team says they knew they couldn't film Season 3 as intended due to COVID and they wanted do something creative to keep the 'After Forever' family and fans engaged. The producers plan to resume production on Season 3 once it's safe to do so in late 2021. Also, the GLAAD Media Award nominations were recently announced including the news that 'After Forever' will be honored with a Special Recognition Award. Join me as I chat with Kevin Spirtas about the new special “Riley's Unforgettable School Project,” life imitating art, and more. You can find 'After Forever' on Amazon Prime video. TVC 526.6: Emmy Award-winning actor, writer, and producer Kevin Spirtas pays tribute to his colleague Michael Slade. Kevin and Michael co-created After Forever, the multi Emmy Award-winning digital series that has won critical acclaim not only for its portrayal of gay men in their fifties, but for its unflinching honesty in dealing with loss. In an untimely example of life imitating art, Michael Slade died from cancer on Dec. 27, 2020, a few days before the release of Riley’s Unforgettable School Project, a thirty-minute documentary-style stand-alone special that provides a bridge between the end of Season 2 of After Forever and the start of Season 3. Among other topics, Kevin talks to Ed about the blueprint that Michael left behind for Season 3 of After Forever, once it is safe to resume production of the series. As Brian puts his life back together, Jason periodically appears to help him focus on his new life and moving on, most notably with his new boyfriend. As Michael Slade told The Advocate, “We as gay men, after we're no longer 35, we tend to disappear from popular culture until we're Christopher Plummer — asexual down the hall with a cat.” The writing process was also cathartic for Slade, whose partner, Richard, died of cancer several years ago. Season One of 'After Forever' was nominated for 8 Emmy Awards and won five including Outstanding Digital Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Digital Drama Series, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 61 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! As we inch closer to October, how better to celebrate the spookiest of months than with a trio of vampire films? So, we’re looking at Playboy’s Embrace the Darkness series, back to back! We start, logically, with the first film, directed by the great Kelley Cauthen, in which a “performance artist” named Jennifer falls for a vampire who lives across the street from her named Galen. Bad idea? Sure, probably. But that’s not the big news - the big news is this episode’s guests. Many of you would know that Alistair, Siobhan and Drew all got their start in podcasting on the legendary Movies About Girls Show. Well, we’re joined this episode by Ken and Stacey, one time king and queen of podcasting, now the brains (and many other body organs) behind Boston public access superhits Heavy Leather Topless Dance Party and Heavy Leather Music Video! It’s just like the good old days! Plus, we also more or less get around to talking about the life and career of Kevin Spirtas, who plays the vampire Galen! You might know him as Kevin Blair, one of the stars of Friday the 13th Part VII. Or maybe you know him from his six years as Dr. Craig Wesley on Days of Our Lives. Or, from his webseries After Forever, which just won an astonishing six Daytime Emmys. Or, heck, even it’s possible you know him from his one man, all singing, all dancing stage show Night and Days!
