He steps into the pen with us to check out Alan Rudolph's second film with Zalman King (happy Zalmanuary to those that celebrate). It's the horror sci-fi eco-thriller ENDANGERED SPECIES - we get into X-Files talk, Twin Peaks, 1982 horror, cattle mutilations, aliens, the CIA, other government ops, Gary Larson, Cow Tools, Robert Urich being a weird sex freak in the movie. So much to enjoy on this episode, and the movie is pretty cool, too! Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals, and a happy new year. We watched the final film of a master film maker, Eyes Wide Shut.  Where do we even start.  This thing took years to shoot.  The tabloids went crazy about the sex and relationships of the stars.  One of the best directors of all time stayed up all night talking to Zalman King to get the vibe just right for a weird dreamlike orgy.  Did we mention Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are in this thing. Welcome to the 2 hour 40 minute masterpiece? of Eyes Wide Shut.  Come along with us.  This misunderstood piece of film history gets digested and probably even more misunderstood by us.  We stay in our "barely legal" timeline of films that came out just as we were actually able to start seeing them for this one and hit up one of the Forbidden Cinema classics.

Thanks for coming along on this journey through early 90s cable erotica with us.  This week we take on the episode, Another Woman's Lipstick.  Hang on, it's going to be a bumpy ride. We have got lipstick stains, more of Zalman King's women-with-a-moustache cliché, and a wild dance with a full on floor lamp. We watch the things that were forbidden in our conservative childhoods and teenage years and comment on them now.  We had so much fun with a single episode, we are doing the whole series.

Peter gets to weigh in on some of his least favorite films from 2022 and one that pleasantly surprised him in 2023. They look back on a new edition from softcore master, Zalman King, as well as a barrage of new 4K releases that include a real gem from horror maestro, Wes Craven, working a bit outside his genre. But they most importantly include one of the great, still underappreciated, works from Walter Hill and a release over 20 years in the making that would have absolutely delighted our good friend, Sergio Mims. 0:00 - Intro 1:02 - Criterion (Last Hurrah For Chivalry, Inland Empire) 9:49 - Kino (Never Say Die, Thanks for the Memory) 13:06 - Warner Archive (The Prince and the Showgirl, Flamingo Road) 19:15 - Music Box (Leonor Will Never Die) 20:49 - Synapse (Phenomena (4K)) 28:09 - Ronin Flix (Wild Orchid 2) 35:18 - Lions Gate (Seriously Red, Alice, Darling, The Whale) 43:37 - Sony (A Man Called Otto) 46:27 - Universal (M3GAN, The Prince of Egypt (4K)) 53:50 - Shout! Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with actress Sherilyn Fenn. The sultry, versatile, petite (5' 4") beauty Sherilyn Fenn was born Sheryl Ann Fenn in Detroit, Michigan, into a family of musicians. The youngest of three children, her mother, Arlene Quatro, played keyboard in rock bands, her aunt is rock-star Suzi Quatro, and her grandfather, Art Quatro, was a jazz musician. Her father, Leo Fenn, was the manager of such bands as The Pleasure Seekers (the all-girl band formed by the Quatro sisters), Alice Cooper, and The Billion Dollar Babies. Fenn began her career with a number of B-movies including The Wild Life (alongside Chris Penn), skater film Thrashin' (opposite Josh Brolin) and teen-fantasy movie The Wraith (opposite Charlie Sheen). She had a memorable part in the cult teen-comedy Just One of the Guys in which she tries to seduce a teenage girl disguised as a boy, played by Joyce Hyser. Fenn landed her first starring role, as an engaged heiress to an old Southern family experiencing her sexual awakening in Zalman King's erotic drama film Two Moon Junction, after which she said she wanted to hide for a year. Fenn won her most outstanding role and made an indelible impression on the public when she was cast by David Lynch and Mark Frost as the tantalizing Audrey Horne, the high-school femme fatale from the critically acclaimed TV series Twin Peaks. The series ran from 1990 to 1991, and the character of Audrey was one of the most popular with fans, in particular for her unrequited love for FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) and her style from the '50s (with her saddle shoes, plaid skirts and tight sweaters). Sherilyn made a memorable impression as the cherry stem-twisting siren. Sherilyn is the lead actress for the hit new audio drama, The Last Saturday Night. She is also known for her roles on Twin Peaks, Of Mice and Men, Boxing Helena, Cave Dweller, SWAT, Goliath, Titans, The Magicians, and Shining Vale. Today we'll talk about why this intoxicating and troubling film is worth a second look, how to square away the arguably feminist finished product from a production process that robbed Basinger of agency, and we'll explore the film Rourke and King re-teamed on as a re-do, Wild Orchid. This week Val and Rachel and Special Guest (and Val's very own "pool boy")  Aaron Lange discuss Red Shoe Diaries, "an American anthology erotic drama series that aired on Showtime cable network from 1992 to 1997 and distributed by Playboy Entertainment overseas. It is a spinoff of an earlier film by the same name, also directed by Zalman King. Most episodes were directed by either Zalman King, Rafael Eisenman or both. The story-lines usually have a thin plot revolving around some intrigue and the sexual awakening of a girl or woman who often also narrates. Sensuous love scenes with nudity as well as sultry, moody music are characteristic for most episodes. There is no story arc or characters connecting the different stories other than Jake Winters introducing each episode." Hot Topics Include: 1.) The history and meaning of soft core porn and how it embodies the 90s zeitgeist 2.) Is erotica dead? 5.) Debate over David Duchovny's acting ability 6.) Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 88 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! We’ve been watching Zalman King films chronologically for the whole time we’ve been doing this podcast, and anyone who knows Zalman King knows there’s one big film that has to be talked about: the most Zalman King film of all Zalman King’s films. A movie in which King gets to once again show an upper class woman in a steamy affair with a blue collar worker, but also gets to throw in death, bucketloads of angst, and a climactic boozy basketball battle. Finally, we’re ready for 1992’s Red Shoe Diaries. Along for the very exciting ride is Cassie from Happy Hour Gets Weird podcast: she and her co-host had talked about actors appearing in softcore pre-fame, and said a few times they were curious about seeing Red Shoe Diaries, so we had a blast chatting about the experience with her. Plus, of course, we talk about the life and career of the film’s pre-fame star, David Duchovny! And there is much to talk about. There’s the unfinished PhD in English Literature, the recent ventures into music and novels, and of course, the universally recognised role for which everyone knows him: evil venture capitalist Brad in Beethoven. This week we have three very strange movies picked by the lunatics that are our Dom DeLuise Patreon donors!Up first, Roger Corman's New World Pictures serves up a rip-off of Alien that aims to be gorier and sleazier than it's source material with Galaxy of Terror from 1981, featuring an all-star cast of b-movie actors, including; Robert Englund, Ray Walston, Sid Haig, Erin Moran, Zalman King, Grace Zabriskie and Edward Albert. Then, Armand Assante plays hard-boiled cop Mike Hammer in an 80's-upped remake of a 1950's noir flick in which while investigating the death of his friend, he stumbles upon a sex clinic run by Barbara Carrera that's more escort service than medical practice and it has criminal ties that go all the way to the top in I, The Jury from 1982. And finally, Takashi Miike brings us a story about a four-generation family that despite their own personal issues, band together to open a bed & breakfast on the Japanese mountainside. However, their customers keep dying in odd ways, but instead of calling the cops, the family hides the bodies as not to hurt their already struggling business. Oh yeah, there's also claymation and musical numbers sprinkled throughout in the very weird The Happiness of the Katakuris from 2001.All this plus hot mask fashions, a call from The Fallen One, updates from the drive-in, film festivals coming to your house, this week's goofiest blu-rays and so much more! Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 67 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Every few months, we like to continue our chronological look at the career of the one and only Zalman King. We started with the delightful Two Moon Junction, then marvelled at the oddness of Wild Orchid, and this time we try to get our heads around in name only sequel/orphan prostitution period piece/high school drama epic Wild Orchid II: Blue Movie Blue, aka Wild Orchid II: Two Shades of Blue. Even with the added might of guests Cherrybomb and Holly, it’s not entirely clear if we really do manage to work it out. Zalman King is a super weird guy, and he made some super weird movies, and they’re probably not going to get any less weird as we keep looking through them. We definitely don’t work out what Tom Skerritt is doing in the movie. Did Tom Skerritt know what he was doing in this movie? Probably not. We also focus on the life and career of the great Nina Siemaszko, who plays the titular Blue. She experienced early career success in twin Corey smash hit License to Drive, but then evidently elected to play a character named Blue in a Zalman King movie, which is a thing you could do, I guess. After sharpening their double entendre game, the ladies hop to the discussion at hand, this week’s book, “Ignore the Guy, Get The Guy A Woman’s Survival Guide To: Mastering a Break-Up and Taking Back Her Power” by Leslie Braswell.Finding credentials on the author was a touch difficult but the girls examine the key reason the no contact rule works, answer the question, “Can we be friends?”, and what you can infer about a guy by how he breaks up with you. Spoiler alert, the emoji route isn’t the way to go… unless you know, taco emoji. Both of the ladies get real about past experiences on the emotional roller coaster, with extra special pit stop in depression. The author asks the question, “Is there a chance there is something better?” A better guy for you as each breakup teaches you something new. This leads the ladies to ask, “Do we really want the guy back?”A Kim Basinger quote enlightens the ladies on trusting their intuition and the difference between the way men and women view intuition, logic and trusting their gut. Carla and Delia get raw and real about shame, humiliation and embarrassment that not trusting intuition led them to. We went undercover, guys. It was awesome. We took a look at two great detective pilot TVMs: The House on Greenapple Road (1970), which would lead to the short lived series Dan August, and we also watched the second Harry-O pilot, Smile Jenny, You're Dead (1944). We felt Marion Ord's pain and we fell in love with Zalman King! We hope you enjoy! And one last mention of the Rondos (I swear!). We're up for Best Multi-Media Site, and Amanda has also been nominated for best Live Event ("Big Scares on the Small Screen" lecture for the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, which was hosted by the Brooklyn Horror Film Fest), and Best Commentary (Last House on the Left). You can see all the nominations here, and you can send your ballot to taraco@aol.com. Lots of great people on that list, so we won't be mad if you want to vote for someone else. Just vote!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 39 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks! We’re back to our very irregular look at the work of Zalman King. We started way back in episode 18 when we did his directorial debut, Two Moon Junction, so now it’s time for his infamous 1989 follow-up, Wild Orchid, aka the one in which Mickey Rourke and Carre Otis had real actual sex probably. Spoilers: everyone involved says they didn’t, and frankly if they did then they had some real boring and unenthusiastic sex. This is one weird, weird movie, and no one on the show quite knows how they feel about it until they have to actually give it a rating, although everyone agrees that actual Golden Globe winner Jacqueline Bisset and her crazy actual acting and, especially, her fabulous men's suit and drawn-on moustache (very proto-Dorian Electra!) is the unequivocal highlight. Also we didn’t really want to discuss the life and times of Mickey Rourke because that guy is a complete bummer. So, we talked about someone from the film with a much cooler and wilder life: Oleg Vidov! In the ‘70s, he was known as the “Robert Redford of Soviet cinema”. But then some craziness happened because his wife was having an affair with a dashing bearded foreigner you might be familiar with, he got a divorce, and the KGB and Leonid Brezhnev ended up significantly pissy at him, so he defected to the US, staying at Richard Harrison’s house in Rome for a few months on the way! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 2GO-GO69 or (724) 246-4669!

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 18 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks! This episode, we dip our toes into the heady world of Zalman King, and get classy as all heck with his 1988 Southern romance epic Two Moon Junction! Can Alabama senator's daughter Sherilyn Fenn resist the charms of frequently shirtless working class bozo Richard Tyson? Of course not - it's a Zalman King movie, and he's all about the delicious irresistibility of the working class man. As a bonus, IMDB's parents' guide says you can see Fenn's anus briefly, by the way. Since we recorded this episode, Drew's actually gone and verified that. So that's fun. We also chat about the life and times of the late, great Mr King, from his time as a commercial diver, through his years as an actor, and finally his years as a genre defining director. 'Soft in the Middle: The Contemporary Softcore Feature in Its Contexts' author David Andrews says, "more than any other individual”, King “facilitated the emergence of contemporary softcore". Good work, Zalman King!
