Overlapping Dialogue

Anchors aweigh on 2021 as we deliver our very last episode of the year with Otto Preminger's colossal 1968 "comedic" misfire Skidoo! But before we steer directly into the iceberg, this week's Blue Plate Special has us parsing the Matrix sequels (Reloaded, Revolutions, and the latest Resurrections) for meaning and edification, followed by an outright celebration of Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film Licorice Pizza. Upon finally arriving to the Mad Magazine-esque pastiche that is Skidoo, we critique the ways in which television began altering the stylings and aesthetics of film comedy in the 1960s and beyond, question the decision making of dramatic filmmaker like Preminger endeavoring to direct a comedy as scattershot and misguided as this, and in general mourn the presence of stars (in this case from the 1930s) rapidly approaching their expiration dates. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 66 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! Long time listeners may recall back in episode 27 we looked at Gary Graver’s unjustly forgotten 1973 weirdo classic ...And When She Was Bad. It’s one of the most incredible films we’ve looked at on the podcast, but one of the craziest things about it is that Graver later remade it in 1991 or so as Angel Eyes (with the great Fred Olen Ray producing). 1991 was slightly less receptive to 5+ minute electro-prog soundtracked psychedelic sequences though, so Graver had to jam in a subplot in which Erik Estrada plays a loan shark/drug dealer (whose boss is Richard Harrison, of all people). Also Monique Gabrielle stars this time around, so it’s less clear how old the main character Angel is meant to be - is she a teenager like in the original, or is she in her late 20s like Gabrielle was at the time? Impossible to know. Plus, we focus on the life and career of one of the film’s other stars - the legendary, late, great John Phillip Law! You probably know him from the two films he made in 1968 while in Italy, Danger: Diabolik and Barbarella! He never quite hit the big time in the US - possibly because he turned down Jon Voight’s role in Midnight Cowboy and missed out on Nicholson’s role in Easy Rider due to scheduling issues - but he never lacked work overseas. In fact, he estimated later in his life he made films in 24 different countries! Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724) 246-4669! "Don’t come near, honey. Molten gold wouldn’t suit your skin." Creating a movie from a comic book has obviously become a huge way to make money at the box office these days, but back in the late 60s, it seemed a bit riskier. Dino de Laurentiis wanted to make a film out of the incredibly popular Italian comic “Diabolik”, but the first try was bad and not worth finishing. It took a bit for people to really connect with the vision. So he dumped it and started again. Luckily, his second go-around – this time with director Mario Bava – worked. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our series celebrating 50th anniversaries of 1968 crime films with Bava’s Danger: Diabolik. We talk about the crazy tone the film gives off and how it feels so much a part of its period while incredibly unique. We look at the over-the-top nature of the performances and how they work in the film, starting with John Phillip Law as the title character. We chat about the phenomenal production design and lively camera work, and how well the film works visually. We debate the quality of Ennio Morricone’s music and wonder if we’ll ever get the theme song out of our heads. And we wonder what other Bava films we need to see to really feel like we get what he’s going for in his body of work. "Don't come near, honey. Molten gold wouldn't suit your skin." Creating a movie from a comic book has obviously become a huge way to make money at the box office these days, but back in the late 60s, it seemed a bit riskier. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our series celebrating 50th anniversaries of 1968 crime films with Bava's Danger: Diabolik. We debate the quality of Ennio Morricone's music and wonder if we'll ever get the theme song out of our heads. And we wonder what other Bava films we need to see to really feel like we get what he's going for in his body of work. And what the ever-loving shit was John Derek thinking with that snake fight? PLUS: Drunken explorers tell tall tales at the U.K. equivalent of Applebee's—whatever that is!Tarzan the Ape Man stars Bo Derek, Richard Harris, John Phillip Law, and Miles O'Keeffe; directed by John Derek.

The future never looked so good. Join Invasion of the Remake in their fur lined spaceship as we strip down, rethink, and remake Barbarella (1968)! Based on the Jean-Claude Forest comic series, Roger Vadim brings Barbarella to the big screen in what would be the first time a science fiction comic character had a feature film. It was also near the end of Jane Fonda's "first act" and one of the last of her sex kitten films. She would go on to Oscar winning films, political activism, and be a famous fitness advocate. But she wasn't alone in Barbarella, she was also joined by John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea, and the legendary Marcel Marceau! So come on board, stay away from the Excessive Machine, and join us in remaking Barbarella! The NaschyCast returns with a French produced gem from the 1970's. Paul Naschy's role in this action adventure is pretty small but the film is well worth seeing for the rest of the cat and the fun story. DOCTOR JUSTICE is based on a series of French comic books that were very popular at the time. Dr. Benjamin Justice is an humanitarian doctor and works for the WHO (World Health Organization) tackling medical problems all over the globe. He is an expert of judo (6th dan), ju-jitsu and karaté. In the film he is played by John Phillip Law as an incredibly optimistic force for all that is right and good (justice, no?) with a will to put every bit of his abilities in the service of bringing criminals to heel. In this case the (very) good Doctor is up against some very clever oil thieves who have found a way to highjack an entire tanker of the black gold while the ship is still in transit - and without the crew even knowing the oil is gone! These criminals are lead by Gert Fröbe who will be instantly recognizable as Auric Goldfinger from the Bond film, of course but the rest of the bad guys a prove to be of interest as well including a martial arts expert that makes the numerous fight scenes very entertaining. Troy and I are happy to be back in the saddle with a Naschy film to discuss even one with as little of our hero as this. We keep the show on track for the most part but there are the usual side conversations about what we've been watching and reading lately as well as some music talk. The Mail Bag this time out gives us some food for thought but we are always hungry for more feedback so if you wish please contact the show at naschycast@gmail.com to add your musings to the proceedings.
