Whilst in Hong Kong, she also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and and a Masters Degree in Lifelong learning. She continued to work in distance education online while the children were small, but 15 years ago, she decided to retrain to be a Homeopath and have now been qualified and practicing in Suffolk for ten years. Alongside Homeopathy, she also offers Bach Flower Therapy, Homeobotanical therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Kinesiology (using NAET which is an allergy elimination technique) and Presentchild® Translation. Medicinal herbs have been used for centuries to support our health and wellbeing. In fact, some Chinese and Egyptian texts about the use of herbs date back to 3000BC. In this episode I explore the role of herbs in menopause, and how to introduce them into our self-care programme to manage those pesky symptoms. My expert guest is medical herbalist, Hannah Charman. She brings 25 years of clinical experience to the podcast and supports her patients with a combination of herbal medicine, coaching and advanced hypnotherapy. Her specialist area of interest is menopause, and there really isn't much that she doesn't know about herbs and how they can help us through the hormonal upheaval during this phase of our life. Hannah explains the therapeutic history of herbs and how it has developed over the centuries. She calls it the people's medicine and she's picked out her top 5 herbs for managing the menopause. She takes us through each one in detail, explaining what it is, how it impacts the body, how it can relieve symptoms, where it grows, how it can work with food, and how you could use to support yourself. She also shares some very helpful advice on the use of herbs generally and how to ensure that you use them safely and effectively. It's a fascinating episode with a hugely helpful range of tips. In fact, it gave me a real urge to create my own herb garden! If you've enjoyed the podcast, make sure you subscribe so you don't miss the next episode and please give it a 5-star rating and a short review on Apple podcasts, or whichever platform you listen on, I'd be so grateful. And do tell your friends and family about it too. It really does make a huge difference to the visibility of the podcast, so that more women can find the show. After all, every woman deserves to have a happy menopause. ‘Destiny is not a matter of chance, it's a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for, it's a thing to be achieved'. I had this quote by William Jennings Bryan stuck on my fridge for decades, as I've often thought about the difference between fate and destiny. Maybe we can control our destinies, but not necessarily our fate. And the difference is what? Some would say that destiny means there are opportunities to turn right or left along the path, but fate on the other hand is a one way. So is my fate predetermined then, but the stops along the way are up to me? These are some of the questions that many thinkers throughout history have also asked themselves. Medical astrology was used by our elders to help decode this existential angst. Astronomy and astrology were combined with medicine for thousands of years, beginning in Mesopotamia about 4,000 years ago, the oldest recorded civilization in the world, now modern Iraq, and continuing well into the 18th century. In fact, ancient physicians were required to pass astrological exams within their medical training as physicians. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, based his medical theories on the relationship between the heavenly bodies and human bodies, stating, as a physician without a knowledge of astrology has no right to call himself a physician. Likewise, Galen, the Greek physician, writer and philosopher agreed, further developing Hippocrates' work. Medical astrology however, came later, reaching its epitome in Europe about 500 years ago. Part art, part science, and not without controversy, the use of astrology in medicine was by no way fringe. It was prominent in the training of physicians and lay practitioners alike by the end of the Middle Ages. This fascinating and ancient science illustrates centuries of connections between astrology, human personality, and health. Medical practitioners used astronomy and astrology as a key part of diagnosis and prescription. It's an ancient branch of astrology based mostly on the idea that various parts of the body, diseases and medicine, have an association with the nature of heavenly bodies, such as the sun, moon, planets, and the 12 astrological signs. It associates each sign of the zodiac with parts of the body, from head - Aries, to toes - Pisces, and everything in between. These associations and the impact of the heavens on the earth of us humans were believed equally by both the educated elite, and average working class folk for millennia. Centuries later, we're once again starting to study plants and their own individual embodiment of the planetary forces which are uniquely expressed in them. Once this plant to planet relationship was reintroduced to us, it enabled us herbalists and astrologers to not only better understand the plant, but helped us to understand how to strengthen its medicine and therefore healing capabilities on a profound level. To get a better understanding of all of this and how to relate it to Toxic Silence, I'm so pleased to introduce Naturopath, Herbalist and Medical Astrologer, Elizabeth Cowley. Elizabeth has been working with plants and planets for over 20 years so she knows this stuff on a deep level, and I'm thrilled to be allowed to pick her Mercurial brain. Yep she's got a Gemini sun. In today's episode Tatiana Dawn interviews Sue Evans: a respected herbalist, teacher and herbal historian on Wurrundjeri country in Melbourne. Sue has an incredible birds eye view on Australian herbalism over the past almost 50 years of her education and career, and when she did her PHD, she really dived into the herbal history of Australia since European settlement, and some of the challenges that herbalists have faced over this time. Sue herself has a rich history of herbal education, starting with training at the National Institute of Medical Herbalists in the UK. In Australia, Sue taught teaching at the Southern School of Natural Therapies. Later, she moved to Southern Cross University in Lismore, where she was part of the first university course in naturopathy in Australia. After nearly 20 years there, she returned to Melbourne and continued teaching online with the University of Tasmania. Throughout her career, Sue practiced herbal medicine for about 25 years, was part of the first integrative clinic in Melbourne, and was involved in the establishment of the Victorian Herbalists Association during a politically charged time when the Therapeutic Goods Act was introduced. Sue has been a huge advocate for herbalists rights, and also for the rights of the plants, promoting a more sustainable way of managing the industry that has emerged with the import of herbs for clinical practice. In this interview we explore the repeating patterns through history, of herbalists being oppressed by the government and allopathic medical industry. We discuss what history has been lost or misplaced, and Sue shares her wisdom that we need only to look to the landscape and the plants to find the history written. Sue also shares her story of being at the first ever meeting of the American Herbalist Guild, and how a previous conversation with Micheal Tierra catalyzed the AHG to form. We actually cover so much in this interview, and yet it feels like the tip of the iceberg. I really loved this chat with a herbal elder who I respect so much, and I hope that you enjoy. Deanne Apostolou is a Medical Herbalist, Iridologist, educator and speaker, with over 28 years clinical experience. She's a founding member of Estuary Learning, a collaboration of practitioners and mentors dedicated to enriching and supporting the art of natural earth medicine. Dee's also a mum of 3 adult children who have grown up with herbs and good nutrition. She loves it when she hears them spruiking the benefits of good food and a healthy lifestyle to their friends. Dee's very passionate about her profession. It's a lifestyle, not just a job, but that doesn't mean she doesn't drink wine and eat chocolate. She loves helping people on their health journey and teaching students so they can spread the word even further. During our chat, we explore the idea that the concept of self care has become more ‘acceptable' and we agree that there are many more conversations being had in this space now as compared to say 20 years ago. Dee and I look back at how the barriers to self care have shifted in this time and how our idea of self care and it's necessity is a reflection of the society in which we find ourselves inhabiting. Dee is all about helping her clients to make small, manageable change to help support their health and we dive into the psychology around the motivation that accompanies the wins from these small changes and how this can be applied to our own consistency with self care. Dee shares a great tip that she uses for checking in with both her clients and herself to monitor progress and celebrate the small wins of being consist over an extended period. Dee is an eloquent story teller and one of my favourite parts of this chat is her beautiful story of her morning walk through bushland with her pup, the kookaburras and rosella's and the very special plant friends she greets along the way. We chat about the value of surrender and a good ol cry- Dee shares the science about why we feel so good after we fall in a heap. One of Dee's favourite allies in a crisis is the Bach Flower formula, Rescue Remedy- she shares the very special joy of her children reaching for this remedy of their own accord after years of having mumma help support them this way. And, she also shares a unique way that she incorporates Rescue Remedy with other allies… Like most Herbalists, Dee found it impossible to share just one favourite herb, so we are lucky enough to have her share her wisdom on 3 of her favourites, including a lesser know ally- Rosehips. **CONNECT WITH DEANNE** The Nature of Health www.natureofhealth.com.au Estuary Learning: https://www.estuarylearning.org.au/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thenatureofhealth/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_nature_of_health/ Email: deanne@natureofhealth.com.au **CONNECT WITH JESS** Book an appointment: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=17239954 Buy handmade herbal products: https://jessbosscha-naturopath.square.site/ Join the waitlist for upcoming workshops and courses: https://linktr.ee/jessbosscha_naturopath **THE ELDER TREE TROVE PATREON COMMUNITY** You can join our Patreon here and gain a deeper connection to our podcast. Have you ever wondered what Ayurvedic medicine is? I have been so intrigued by this traditional form of medicine that stems from India and is estimated to be over 3000 years old, so I knew I wanted to explore and share this episode with you on the podcast!I am thrilled that we have Dr. Ashish Paul, an Ayurvedic physician with over 27 years of practice experience and a Medical Herbalist with over 19 years experience, on the podcast to talk about all things Ayurveda! In this episode we learn about how this ancient practice can help heal the mind, body and spirit. It was fascinating to learn about how purusha (male energy) and prakriti (female energy) come together and manifest the whole world. I also loved learning about the five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth) and how these elements make up our constitution and manifest in the body (from how the skin looks, passing of stools, levels of tiredness, and more).Vitality and gut health are other topics we explored as these are also key considerations Dr. Ashish and Ayurvedic practitioners consider when assessing patient's overall well-being. For anyone interested in learning about how Eastern medicine can complement Western medicine in a holistic manner, you need to listen to this episode! To learn more about Dr. Ashish and how she uses Ayurvedic medicine and practices to help her patients, please visit her website: https://ashishveda.uk/. You can also connect with her on IG: https://www.instagram.com/ashishvedafertility/ The book Dr. Ashish recommended reading is Vasant Lad's “Textbook of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles”.Keep envisioning and living your best lives EnvisionAirs!Lots of love,NicoleSupport the show

Menopausal symptoms can take a long time to resolve, this study was looking at 20% of women having hot flushes 8 year prior to their last menstrual cycle, that is far too long to be suffering, there are things you can do to improve your situation, you are worth it, please don't put your head in the sand and try to wait it out. There will be summer peaks and winter troughs along the way but as a general rule things are likely to get worse the closer to the last menstrual bleed before they start getting better, unless you take action! Have you considered the role of hepcidin in regulating your low iron levels? Hepcidin is the master iron regulating hormone. Hepcidin binds to and blocks ferroportin, an iron export protein, blocking it from iron and preventing it's absorption. In simpler terms it changes the amount of available iron receptors in the small intestines that can absorb iron. Regular physical activity, such as walking, can have several positive effects on overall health, including potential benefits for the menopausal transition. Why walking? Because walking is free, available everywhere, and has a really low risk of injury. You can do it by yourself, with your dog, or together with other family members or friends. You can use walking in three different ways. One for the reduction of symptoms you are currently experiencing, 2 for the prevention of future issues, 3 just for fun! Some of the benefits of walking can occur in as little as 10 minutes, with 1 walk, other benefits take much longer and need a greater frequency. This week's show is with Wendy Dooner. Wendy Dooner is a Medical Herbalist and Shamanic Practitioner from Scotland who is passionate about reconnecting women with the innate healing wisdom of nature and their bodies. Wendy graduated from university in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science (honours) degree in Herbal Medicine (Phytotherapy) and, more recently, a 3-year advanced Shamanic Practitioner course. Weaving back together the threads of science, magic and spirituality in herbal medicine has been a major focus of her practice recently and is a cornerstone of her teachings; she now practices what she has called Shamanic Herbalism. Through her online courses, workshops, or one-on-one consultations, Wendy ensures that this wonderful blend of ancient wisdom and modern science reaches all her students. At the heart of Wendy's practice is her profound connection with her native medicinal plants. She believes that these plants hold the answers to many of our modern ailments. In her practice, Wendy doesn't just prescribe herbs; she introduces her clients to a world where plants are people; they are teachers, guides, allies and elders. She believes that every plant has a story to tell and a lesson to impart, and it's her mission to facilitate these transformative conversations between nature and the individual. She lives happily in a small community in the foothills of the Cairngorms in Scotland with her husband and 2 young sons, where she forages in the wilds of the moorlands, grows herbs in her messy garden and skateboards at every spare opportunity. In this show, Lian and Wendy explored our experience and understanding of autistic people, and maybe especially women, being designed to be healers, how the very aspects of ourselves that have created struggles, can be used in service of helping others to heal, and what we've seen can be helpful to alchemise those challenges into gold. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: As both Lian and Wendy's experiences showed, being late diagnosed as a woman can bring its own emotions and challenges - there's a reckoning and grieving needed in order to move forward into claiming the gifts that autism brings Pattern recognition, empathy, adherence to ritual, openness to spirits and other realms, and attention to detail are all aspects of autism that can be used in service of supporting others in their journey to wholeness Diving into the work of reclaiming the unwanted and hidden parts of us is challenging for most people but maybe especially for autistic people for whom there has been an even greater challenge, necessity, and effort needed to fit in and function - it requires the right support and readiness, and we can be helped by understanding and using some of the very same gifts we will ultimately serve to others. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Wendy's story of beginning with a scientific, materialist approach to healing before then being called into a deeper spiritual connection is an arc that so many of us seem to be called to as healers and guides When we pay attention, the plant of our land are communicating with us constantly, they can teach us deep truths about the universe (such as Wendy's experience with the hawthorn giving her an embodied teaching about death and rebirth) or show us important breadcrumbs on our path (as the oak did for me, propelling me onto the shamanic path) Creating a true relationship between humans and other beings and spirits based on respect and reciprocity is vital - making offerings, asking permission, and asking what plants are beautiful ways to begin this kind of relationship Resources and stuff that we spoke about Visit Wendy's Website: wendydooner.com The Center for Shamanism: Shamanic Herbal 1:1 with Wendy Follow The Center of Shamanism in Social Media: Facebook: Wendy Dooner Instagram: @wendy.shamanicherbalist Thank you for listening! Dr. Christy Sutton is a chiropractor, who is interested in asking why health problems occur, what the root causes are, and what the safest and most effective solutions to health problems are the foundation of her writing, teaching, and clinical practice. Her personal health struggles and her desperation to find answers to her own serious health problems surrounding Crohn's and Celiac disease have led her down the alternative healthcare path and to look for ways to find and avoid genetic landmines. Her first book “Genetic Testing: Defining Your Path to a Personalized Health Plan”; and its corresponding “Genetic Detoxification”; report were the precursors to creating the Labrogenomics educational webinars and to write her upcoming book “The Iron Curse”. Her book “The Iron Curse”; is inspired by diagnosing her husband and many patients with hereditary hemochromatosis and iron-related health problems, and takes a deep dive into hemochromatosis and other iron-related disorders. Her husband's hemochromatosis led to liver problems and likely led to the development of a pituitary tumor that caused Cushing's disease. From her experience as a clinician, she has discovered that there is a silent epidemic of undiagnosed and untreated hemochromatosis, and this epidemic is being driven by myths, misperceptions, and a failure on the part of the medical community that should be diagnosing people with hemochromatosis: a disease that is easy to screen for, prevent, diagnose, and treat. “The Iron Curse”; course and upcoming book are powerful tools for ending the epidemic of undiagnosed and untreated hemochromatosis, and they give people the information they need to diagnose, prevent, and correct iron-induced damage. She has also created cutting-edge courses designed to help people learn more about labs, genes, and clinical pearls to optimize health. The topics include iron, gut health, immune health, Alzheimer's, and methylation. Read my review of the Iron Curse - Iron Curse Book Review My previous Iron Overload podcast episode was number 169. The Importance of Digestive Enzymes As we age, many women will start to notice a change in their digestive ability. Signs that your digestive system isn't optimally functioning include heartburn, burping, nausea, food intolerances, bloating, cramping, flatulence, and constipation. Several foods naturally contain digestive enzymes that can aid in the digestion process. Including these foods in your diet may help improve digestion and nutrient absorption. Here are some examples of foods rich in digestive enzymes: APRICOTS - Apricots contain invertase, an enzyme that assists with carbohydrate digestion AVOCADOS - Avocados contain lipase, an enzyme that assists in the digestion of fats. BANANAS - Bananas contain amylase and maltase, adding in carbohydrate digestion GINGER - Ginger contains a protein-digesting enzyme called zingibain, but it also stimulates the body to increase its natural production of amylase and lipase helping to also break down carbohydrates and fats. HONEY - Raw unprocessed honey contains diastases, amylases, and invertase enzymes helpful in digesting carbohydrates plus a protease that aids in protein digestion. KIWI FRUIT - Kiwi Fruit contains a protease enzyme called actinidin, which breaks down protein. MANGOES - Mangos contain enzymes like amylase, which helps break down carbohydrates, and proteases that assist in protein digestion. PAPAYA - Papaya contains papain and this helps to digest protein. The riper the fruit the less papain is present. Best to eat green. PINEAPPLE - Pineapple contains bromelain, which is a protease enzyme meaning it aids in protein digestion. NUTS & SEEDS - Sprouting seeds and nuts activate enzymes that aid in the digestion of proteins and fats. The more I learn about indigenous and traditional approaches to well-being, the more I understand that humans ARE nature, not something outside or above it. Shay Grant, an herbalist and yoga teacher who relocated to the UK from Canada, operates from a similar POV. As Anne discovers, the land around us has the power to enhance our mental and physical well-being. All we have to do is stop and smell the roses. Or the gorse. And here's the great thing: your locale doesn't matter. Urban, suburban, or rural, you're never more than ten steps from experiencing the emotional and physical support that plants provide. Shay believes in creating an empowering relationship between our bodies and the world around us, and her training perfectly combines ancient wisdom and modern scientific discovery. “I would not choose a world without modern medicine. I would not choose to live in that world,” Shay asserts. GUEST BIO Shay Grant (she/her) is a Canadian yoga teacher and Medical Herbalist living in the UK. She's been teaching yoga for 8 years and practicing as a herbalist for 2. Shay believes in creating an empowering relationship with our bodies and the land. Let's be friends!
