In this plenary session from Theology Beer Camp 2024, John Thatamanil explores the future of religious identity in an increasingly pluralistic America, arguing that multiple religious participation will be the defining feature of North American religious life. Drawing from his personal journey as an Indian Christian immigrant who also practices Hinduism, and Wilfred Cantwell Smith's provocative question about how Christians explain the existence of other scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita, Thatamanil challenges "Christian supremacy" and its colonial legacy. He distinguishes between harmful forms of religious mixing (particularly the worship of both God and capitalism) and life-giving forms that promote justice and liberation, proposing that the real theological problem isn't practicing Buddhism alongside Christianity, but trying to serve both God and mammon in a capitalist society. The talk culminates in a call for "fluid and dynamic integrity" rather than impossible homogeneity, suggesting that being "spiritually fluid" - like being gender fluid - represents a faithful response to divine truth revealed across traditions. Dr. Thatamanil is Professor of Theology & World Religions at Union Theological Seminary in NYC. So many of us have been challenged and shaped by the witness and work of Gustavo Gutiérrez, the Father of Liberation Theology. Few theologians have shaped theology in the 20th century and beyond as much as Gutiérrez, so I asked my friend Dr. Joerg Rieger to join me in reflecting on his life. Joerg is not just a fellow scholar of liberation but was blessed to work and interact with Gustavo personally. In our conversation, we introduce some of his most important theological contributions and let Joerg share some stories to give us a window into his powerful personality. He is also the founding director of the Wendland-Cook Program in Religion and Justice. For more than two decades, he has worked to bring together theology and the struggles for justice and liberation that mark our age. His work addresses the relation of theology and public life, reflecting on the misuse of power in religion, politics, and economics. His main interest is in developments and movements that bring about change and in the positive contributions of religion and theology. His constructive work in theology draws on a wide range of historical and contemporary traditions, with a concern for manifestations of the divine in the pressures of everyday life. I'm excited to welcome back Sissy Goff and David Thomas to the show to talk about helping our kids foster friendships. As licensed counselors, working at DayStar Counseling Center in Nashville, they provide support, encouragement & compassion to children, adolescents & families in need through counseling. We talk about the nuances of boys vs girls in friendships, what to do if your kid is the bully, helping kids when friendships change or friends move, and how to take cues from our kids when it comes to their friendships “It is really more important to prioritize teaching kids to be friends than to be concerned with them, having friends. And when it comes to our worries and fears about friendships, we can't have more emotion than they do over whatever's going on for them relationally. Often that will make them either feel like we're not safe to talk to, or it'll just make them dam up these feelings.” Connect with David & Sissy: Website: raisingboysandgirls.com Facebook: facebook.com/raisingboysandgirls Instagram: @sissygoff & @raisingboysandgirls Podcast: raisingboysandgirls.com/listen Previous Podcasts with David & Sissy: [Ep 119] The Art of Nurturing Boys :: David Thomas [Ep 141] Raising Girls :: Sissy Goff [Ep 160] Emotional Milestones :: Sissy Goff & David Thomas [Ep 311] Getting Brave About Anxiety :: Sissy Goff [Ep 315] Understanding Boys Better :: David Thomas Links Mentioned: BOOK: Are My Kids on Track? This week's podcast is quite a bit longer than usual, because it goes DEEP into the subject of historical criticism of Islam. I unpack much of the latest evidence that we have about the very obscure origins of Islam. Following the data and evidence that Dr. Jay Smith from Pfander Films has collected, I unpack the issue of Islam's origins through 5 specific polemical lines of attack - as he calls them, the 5 Qs: The Qiblas; The Qira'ats; The Qur'an; The Coins; The Quest for Muhammad; There is a HUGE amount to explore here, and I've barely scratched the surface. On this episode, Marcela reads from Sayed Kashua’s fourth, and latest novel, Track Changes. The novel was published in December by Grove Press. Kashua’s protagonist is a nameless “I” who shares considerable biographical overlaps with the author. This suggests, perhaps even implies, the so-called truth of Kashua’s first-person fiction. Yet his character, whose job is to transcribe others’ memories onto the page, repeatedly reveals his elisions from and additions to strangers’ memoirs-for-hire, often inserting his own memories as their own, thereby erasing his life in scattered pieces. The narrator’s confessions are hardly reliable, making every level of his storytelling suspect, which Kashua further visually underscores by “track changes”-style crossed-out text. Text: Sayed Kashua, Track Changes. Translated by Mitch Ginsburg. Grove Press, 2019. 2 Weeks Ago in Sweetwater Earlier we wondered if Dolores and Wyatt would get equal time running the show. Apparently not. Wyatt's in control. 2 Weeks Ago in Shogun World So much happened here. Mostly, we learned that Sizemore plagiarizes himself in the various parks AND Maeve has continued to evolve her unholy abilities. Now Strand, Bernard and the rescuers make their way back into the Mesa and start cleaning up. Costa introduces a small new mystery. Pre-Season 1 All the Robo-Jim stuff happened between the years immediately following his death (30+years ago) and right before Season 1 started. During Season 1 The sequence where Bernard goes robo-cidal happened somewhere toward the end of Season 1, when Bernard was completely under Ford's control. Two Weeks ago Man in Black and Lawrence rediscover a shred of William's humanity in Lawrence's besieged hometown. This week's episode was more straightforward timeline-wise, but we took the same approach as last week. We split up the show into timelines (or storylines in the case of newcomer Grace), and explore them in sequence before moving on to the next one. Now Timeline: We find out if Hale survived the 2 weeks ago timeline and whether or not anybody kept track of Abernathy. Two Weeks Ago Timeline: Hale and Bernard search for Abernathy and find Rebus' gang. Dolores/Wyatt makes a deal with the Confederado Colonel and then alters it. Hale makes a play for Abernathy leaving Bernard behind. Maeve and her crew encounter some very out of place hosts that use swords more than words. Pre-Season 1 Timeline: We meet Grace vacationing in India-world and find out where the tiger came from. Previous Podcasts: 201 | 202 101 | 102 | 103 | 104 | 105 | 106 | 107 | 108 | 109 | 110

Ronit Matalon's Bliss: A Novel revolves around two friends: Sarah, a politically active photographer, and Ofra, a selfless graduate student. The story is told in flashbacks as Ofra is summoned from Tel Aviv to a provincial township near Paris for a funeral. While there, Ofra, and we, the readers, learn about the collapse of Sarah's marriage. Here is an excerpt from the novel: Sarah closed her eyes in surrender to the music. “It really is unlike anything else,” she said. Michel and I exchanged glances. She was completely tone-deaf and couldn’t tell the difference between the theme song from the nightly news and Bruce Springsteen, a Hebrew folk song and the overture to Don Giovanni. She heard it all as one cacophonous mess. “It’s because she has so much inner noise,” Michel explained. On one of his previous visits a few years earlier, he had accepted an invitation to join her on a tour of Gaza and had endured Channel 2 and Army Radio the whole way. Text: BLISS. By Ronit Matalon.
