For this podcast, I've interviewed lots of Venture Capitalists, who talk about their portfolio of investments in companies, but where does this capital come from? When a VC firm announces it's latest fund of $100M or $1B, who is providing this capital? Well, It's typically pension funds, university endowment funds, family offices, or high net worth individuals. The investors in these funds are called Limited Partners or LP's for short and they are the end client for a VC that is ultimately expecting a return on the capital that has been allocated to a fund. Thus, I was excited to speak with Sara, who has a lot of experience in the venture industry as an LP and her current firm Recast Capital is a fund of funds, meaning she has raised her own fund that in return provides capital to VC firms. The firm's strategy is to invest in and empower emerging managers in venture with a focus on diverse partnerships. The goal of the firm is to provide exceptional returns by investing in diverse emerging venture managers. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Is the VC industry making progress in terms of having more diversity? * Sara's educational background and her experience joining an early stage startup and how her career progressed over this period of time. * How Sara transitioned into the investment side of the equation and her experience at CNF Investments & Greenspring Associates. * What led Sara and her Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Courtney McCrea, down the path of starting Recast Capital and how they go about making investments into VC funds. * Details on how the VC industry works and how to get a venture capital fund started. * And so much more. Welcome to Bride To Have Been, a StudioPod original podcast hosted by Emily Lewis, with the purpose of building a community by sharing the reality of this new normal in the wedding industry. Let’s keep inspiring each other and celebrate the thing we treasure the most: love. Miss Rona couldn’t keep wedding photographer Sara Nobel down for long. Even though nearly 20 of the weddings she had booked last year were cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic, Sara got creative and loaded up her schedule with family photo sessions and found new ways to find last minute wedding bookings. Take a listen to her interview with host Emily Lewis as she explains why low expectations are the key to less disappointment and shares other unexpected outlooks on the global crisis we’ve all been bobbing and weaving our way through over the past year.  Jump straight into: (02:38) - Sara on how she got into wedding photography - “When I realized that you could get paid to go to people's weddings and hang out and take pictures, that was kind of it for me.” (06:34) - Sara’s wedding schedule for 2020 - “I was supposed to have 30 weddings. I was like, ‘This is my year, baby! Let's go!’” (07:04) - How Sara stays positive - “That sadly has been my motto since the third grade, ‘Low expectations, less disappointment.’” (08:29) - How Sara’s year ended up playing out - “I ended up actually shooting like 16—I'm using air quotes—weddings. Some of them five people, some of them 150 people.” (16:36) - Marketing during the pandemic - “A lot of people find me on Instagram. It was a combination of word of mouth, very Yelp and a little bit of Instagram.” (25:37) - Trying to stay safe while working - “I did end up photographing a wedding that I honestly didn't feel super comfortable with.” (28:35) - Trends Sara sees sticking after the pandemic - “It's not about the wedding, it's about the marriage. What is your first step on the path to forgiveness? Sara has experienced many traumas and shifts in her own life, most recently ending her marriage of 20 years to her best friend and husband after finding out that he was gay. Sara’s own personal healing journey was accomplished through her passion for hiking, climbing, paddling and running. Physically discharging the trauma and pain, she was able to attain clarity, emotional strength and resiliency in order to forgive her husband. Forgiveness became the foundation that enabled her to build a healthy interpersonal relationship with her ex-husband and keep her family intact. In this episode, Sara dives deep into the inspiration for her new book, Walk Through This. On Sara’s path to forgiveness, she just put one foot in front of the other; that is how Sara has survived today. We all create our own trail in life; sometimes, we get diverted in ways that we don’t expect. However, it’s all about taking the steps forward and enjoying the journey because our destination is never-ending. That way, you can find true joy every single day.  Later, Sara speaks about how she healed her deepest traumas. In order to feel rebirth, we have to feel all of the feelings. Also, Sara explains how she found the healing power of nature. Through the process of experiencing nature, Sara realized that all you have to do is listen. It’s time to be in a place of acceptance and surrender on your forgiveness journey. Nature will shift how our brain operates, so get out there and enjoy the beauty. Plus, Sara explains the best way to find your inner freedom and peace.  Tune in as we talk about nature-deficit disorder, how to experience nature when you’re not “outdoorsy,” and the ways we can start to forgive ourselves. Sara is the founder and president of deepSEE Consulting and has worked with companies as large as Coca-Cola, General Mills, 3M Company, AARP, and numerous others. She has a new book, “Filter Shift: How Effective People See the World,” that explores how our unconscious is actually making choices and decisions for us, all without our knowing — and how to change that. What you’ll learn about in this episode: Why equality and equity are very different concepts, and why working toward equality rarely creates equal results Why equality doesn’t take into account of individual bias, structural bias, systemic bias, and lack of cultural competence How individual bias can begin to create patterns that impact different social groups in profound ways How the two types of individual bias (stereotypical and preferential) are magnified when we come together in groups How Sara believes structural bias and systemic bias differ, and how both are challenging to recognize How systemic bias is impacting the world of education, and how the global pandemic is amplifying this bias and its impact on students and teachers How systemic bias touches almost every aspect of our lives and our society, from economics to healthcare to criminal justice How the five stages of cultural competence interact with the dynamic of equality versus equity Why we only focus on equality within the first three stages of cultural competence, and why it is only in the last two stages that we can shift our focus to equity Why we must begin recognizing and addressing disparities now, and how deepSEE Consulting’s Equity Framework can help Additional resources: Website: www.deepseeconsulting.com Twitter: @deepseesara

Sara was born in a refugee camp in Sudan after her parents escaped a civil war. Being birthed in such conditions showed Sara the firsthand reality of life, and immediately inspired her to want more. After moving to America and receiving an education from the University of Missouri, Sara's life changed yet again when her first child was born and shortly after she experienced a heart attack. Such major health concerns at an extremely young age, forced Sara to take her health and wellness more seriously. Because of her desire to live for her children, Sara was inspired to create a life full of health, happiness, and wholeness. Now being a mom of two and her first-born being diagnosed with Autism, Sara's advocacy extends to many different areas of passion. The 'Lovestyle' name was born out of Sara's love for the many hats she wears - a mom, a wife, an entrepreneur, and an advocate. Sara has dedicated her entire platform to sharing her experiences in hopes that it will inspire someone else to live their best 'lovestyle' life as well, on their own terms. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/majesty-acheampong/support

Did you think you’d be in a relationship by now? Being single longer than you intended can mean that you have let go of hopes that came along with having a spouse or partner in the picture. This can certainly include having a family. But my guest and dear friend Sara Sweat decided that she wasn’t willing to give up on that desire. Instead, she decided to reimagine her future, and pursue that dream, while accepting the challenges that come with solo-parenting. In this episode, Sara helps us understand the distinction between single parenting and solo parenting and why even on the hard days, it has been 100% worth it.    Because Sara is a tribe sister and soul mate, I have had a front-row seat to the unfolding of the miracle that her son is. We talk about the way she relied on her village from early pregnancy until now. Though taking such a non-traditional route like solo-parenting can be scary, Sara was delighted to discover how many people were so eager to support her. We also talk about the interesting challenge of dating as a solo parent. Sara shares how dating is both trickier and simpler in this season of her life. If you’re single and the dream of having children is not something you’ve been able to release, I challenge you to listen to Sarah’s story and consider the possibility that you might not have to let go of that dream.  In this episode we’ll explore:    Why solo-parenting implies intentional acceptance  What unique challenges and joys a solo parent encounters  How Sara’s community plays a critical role in raising her son How Sara can vet a potential dating match in just one conversation If you enjoyed this episode I invite you to take a screenshot and tag me on your Instagram stories @realtalkaboutthesinglelife and tell me what you think! What you’ll learn about in this episode: Sara discusses the impact of a recent post listing the names of Black individuals who were killed or experienced racism during everyday activities like walking home How Sara’s pain, frustration, and anger after George Floyd was murdered caused her to feel a rawness that her family’s loved ones didn’t understand the pain they were experiencing How Sara’s unique perspective as a white woman married to a black man with a mixed-race family has shown her two distinct worlds, with privilege and advantage when she is alone and a world of racism when she is with her family Sara shares her own list of the places and situations in which she has experienced bias and racial discrimination with her family How Sara’s own son was stopped and questioned by police simply for walking, on an almost weekly basis Why the fact that it isn’t every walk makes systemic racism all the more insidious and traumatic and make it easy for outsiders to dismiss and victims to second-guess themselves Why there are distinct parallels between systemic racism and familial dysfunction, and why gaslighting plays a major role in both Sara shares the definition of gaslighting from Wikipedia and explains why it applies both to disfunction within families and racial disfunction in society Why recognizing racism and acknowledging that it happens is the key to fighting back against the collective gaslighting Additional resources: “It’s Not All Walks”, source unknown: https://whatsthedifferencepodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/image001.png Website: www.deepseeconsulting.com Twitter: @deepseesara

I wanted to bring this encore conversation with Mothers Against Police Brutality’s Sara Mokuria in a week where so many of us have been grappling with the issue of police violence and what we can do about it. I know many of us have been searching for some action we can take about this issue and I want to encourage you to listen to this conversation with Sara Mokuria, one of the co-founders of Mothers Against Police Brutality. She will give you insight and advocacy steps from her own experience losing her father. And then, make a donation to Mothers Against Police Brutality, an organization that is seeking change by addressing policy and building police accountability, beginning in Texas but with nationwide impact. As you listen, I hope you’ll consider making a donation as well and I also challenge you to identify just one person who you can share this episode and this call to action with; together we can start to take steps in the direction of police accountability. Now here is my conversation with Sara Mokuria. ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES It’s an honor and responsibility to share this Episode #33 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with Sara Mokuria, co-founder of Mothers Against Police Brutality. It’s the third and final in a series I recorded as part of the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative and it comes to you with a call to action to get involved with this issue today. This episode was dedicated by Collette Flanagan, the founder of Mothers Against Police Brutality, who turned her grief from the loss of her son, Clinton Allen, into fuel for change. In her dedication, Collette reminded us of our common humanity as mothers and that an insult to one mother is an insult to all mothers. It is this knowing that caused me to record this series after I saw the heart-breaking video of Diamond Reynolds and her then four year old daughter after they witnessed the killing of Philando Castile. Philando was like a father to this little girl, was unarmed and was complying with the police officer’s requests when he was shot. Seeing the trauma and heartbreak endured by this four year old girl, who was the same age as my son when I saw this video, became a catalyst to face the epidemic of police brutality in our country, and to begin taking action, however imperfect. Much like Diamond Reynold’s daughter, Sara also endured trauma and heartbreak when she watched her father get shot and killed by police at her home in Dallas when she was 10 years old. Fueled by her own experience, Sara joined Collette along with another co-founder, John Fullinwider, in creating Mother’s Against Police Brutality, as a multi-racial, multi-ethnic coalition uniting mothers nationwide to fight for civil rights, police accountability and policy reform. Sara is a mom herself to a seven year old boy.  And, in addition to her work with Mothers Against Police Brutality, she’s a sought after educator, community organizer, project manager, and facilitator, currently working as Associate Director for Leadership Initiatives with The Institute for Urban Policy Research at the University of Texas at Dallas. She has two masters degrees, has taught both high school and college at the University of Texas at Dallas and currently serves on the International Mechanism Coordinating Committee for the US Human Rights Network. She came to the conversation with an open heart she told me, and I felt her generosity and honesty throughout as she shared how police violence changed her life forever, discussed the trauma of being black in America, how the institution of policing and the prison industrial complex contributes to that trauma, and the ways in which an investment in Mothers Against Police Brutality can change policies and systems to reduce violence and create more accountability. As compelling was Sara’s exploration of the vision she has for our future… of vibrant communities where we invest in our young people, lean into and value our differences, and where each of us taps into our own unique magic to get us there. We ended our conversation with a co-created prayer, a wish for ourselves as much as for all of you listening, to move into greater responsibility for this work from wherever we are, to have the courage to go to those difficult and painful places so we can create a freer future, and to take this moment right now to support this cause. I’m doing that today by making a financial contribution to Mothers Against Police Brutality and putting my resources with the mothers, like Sara and Collette, who are closest to the problem and who can see the solution. I hope you’ll join me. This episode dedicated by Mothers Against Police Brutality founder Collette Flanagan, whose son, Clinton Allen, was shot and killed by the Dallas Police in March of 2013. Topics discussed in this episode Sara’s joyous childhood which changed forever when her father was killed by Dallas police officers when she was just 10 years old How Sara’s mother was her fiercest advocate, even as her mother grappled with the deeply traumatic effects of her husband’s killing and the lack of support as a crime victim. Disturbing facts about our current law enforcement policies, lack of accountability, the militarization of police, and budget allocations that favor the prison industrial complex over investments that would build a vibrant community The New Jim Crowe and the War on Drugs and how it has played out as a war on people of color White privilege and how to move from shame and guilt to responsibility and action How Sara teaches her son to understand injustice, the history we don’t learn in our schools, and how tenderness, love and joy can be an act of resistance What happened when Sara met with the officer who killed her father years later and how that shifted her perspective about what the problem really is How women make up half of the world’s population and how we birthed the other half, therefore we are the world. And, the power of mothers to chart the direction of our families and communities. The importance of finding your own unique magic to make a difference and why Sara keeps her heart open to welcome people to this cause when they come to it Our prayer and invitation to you the listener Resources mentioned in this episode Women Podcasters in Solidarity Mothers Against Police Brutality The Movie 13th, directed by Ava Duvernay The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander Drug Policy Alliance EP31: Brave Spaces and Solidarity with “Rad Women” Author Kate Schatz Ep 27: Courageous Conversations about Race with Nicole Lee Ep 07: Living Out Loud with Jenjii Hysten How the Irish Became White by Noel Ignatiev Dallas Woman Turns Tragedy Into Conversation About Race, an article where Sara talks about the system and not police officers being the problem Stride Toward Justice: 9 Steps to Change Policing in America – policy recommendations from Mothers Against Police Brutality The Movement for Black Lives Campaign Zero This Week’s Three-fold Challenge Have courageous conversation about these issues with your families during the holidays. Episode 117 Today I am speaking to Sara Willerson and we have an amazing conversation about how horses heal humans. Sara B. Willerson, LCSW is a private practice therapist and life coach in North Texas. Horses have always been part of her life. After completing a Masters in Social Work from Smith College School for Social Work she was given a book by her father, The Tao of Equus, by Linda Kohanov. Upon reading this book, Sara knew that her passion and purpose had finally joined up! After completing an Equine Experiential Learning apprenticeship program with Eponaquest in 2003, she created Horses, Heart & Soul®, an Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy and Life Coaching practice for teens and adults located at WolfTree Ranch in Pilot Point, TX. Sara’s professional experience has focused on working with clients who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, and life transitions. Her program offers individual, family, couples, group, and workshop sessions for adolescents and adults. We talked about how Sara sees horses as natural healers who help us reconnect to our entire being – spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. And how horses remind us there is more to us that what we present to the outside world. Their unconditional awareness and acceptance of our experience is felt from the moment we step into the pasture with them. Horses are natural geniuses when it comes to identifying and sharing those pieces we keep to ourselves. Through this awareness, they help us reconnect with our heart and soul. I invite you to listen in so you can discover how horses heal humans, a magical story of love and wisdom. Highlights you won’t want to miss: Why Sara made the decision to spread the message of the power of horses. How Sara discovered her love for horses. How at the age of 14, Sara was finally able to have her own horse (Pooh). How Sara knew at a very young age that there was something very special in her relationship with her horse and why she kept this to herself. How everything shifted for Sara when she was introduced to the work of Linda Kohanov about the benefits of partnering with horses in a therapeutic setting. Why Sara trusted her new path and how that trust gave her power. How Sara made her dream come true when she was able to have her own place to live with her horses and create a healing space for people to come to. Sara’s horse shares a message about the role of horse wisdom in healing humans. Why the heart and not the mind is what helps you connect with who you really are. Why it’s key to embrace your weird because when you don’t it constricts who you really are. Sara shares a live meditation inspired by horse wisdom. How each horse has their own gift to share with the world. The lesson you can learn from horses about letting go by getting out of your head and connecting to your heart. Understanding that unconditional love only happens when learn to respect our boundaries as humans. The importance of remembering every day to slow down and stay in the present.   Shareable Quotes: “I think horses all have their own gift that they're here to share in this world and they're all very, very unique in terms of the gifts that they are asked to share.” - Sara Willerson “My weirdness slash gift is I hear what horses are saying.” - Sara Willerson “It can be so hard to slow down when we are sort of brought into this formula of what life is supposed to look like. And we just keep walking that walk and we don't stop to ask questions or to breathe.”- Emily Aarons “In doing healing work, I have zero expectations for what's going to happen in a session, because of every situation, every session even if it's the same person 10 times, it's entirely different based on their energy and what they need at that time.” - Emily Aarons   Resources to Take You Deeper: Free Resource: 5-minute "Pasture Meditation Moment" video with the Horses, Heart & Soul® Herd Sara's Website Find Sara on Facebook Find Sara on Instagram Watch Sara's episode on Youtube Sara's Choices and Recommendations: Horse Movies: Secretariat, Seabiscuit, Black Beauty, and Black Stallion; Book: The Tao of Equus Book by Linda Kohanov

NOTHING SHOULD STAND IN THE WAY OF YOUR STORY. We've had some pretty amazing women on The School of Greatness. I've learned a lot from each of them. In fact, I learn a lot from all the women around me (almost my whole team is women). Today's guest is no exception. Male, female, old, young - we could all learn from this incredible businessperson. Not only is she the youngest self-made female billionaire in America (wow, right??), she is also the mother of four young kids, the wife of another podcast guest, Jesse Itzler, and the founder and CEO of the massively popular women's apparel brand SPANX. In this episode, I got to sit with and learn from a legend among entrepreneurs: Sara Blakely. During this interview, I kept finding out new things to admire Sara for. She struggled a lot in school (me too!). She sold fax machines door to door FOR 7 YEARS before she had the idea for Spanx. She was rejected by every manufacturing company she took her idea to. But she didn't let any of that stop her. Sara's hustle and can-do attitude is just one thing I learned about her in this interview. We dive into dealing with grief, how to scale companies the right way, what it's like to be mentored by Richard Branson, and much more. Welcome to an inspiring interview with a powerhouse in Episode 893. Some Questions I Ask: How did you meet your husband Jesse? (30:12) How do you stay so grounded and calm with everything you have going on? (32:00) What did you learn from being mentored by Richard Branson? (44:47) What is more challenging for you – running a billion-dollar brand or being a mom? (49:46) In This Episode You Will Learn: What happened in Sara’s life to prepare her for entrepreneurship before she had her big idea (7:12) The list of possible product names Sara considered before she decided on Spanx (11:46) The hardest part of getting her company off the ground (15:55) How Sara guerrilla-marketed her first order of Spanx in Neiman Marcus (20:01) Why being kind to yourself is so important (32:15) How Sara got Warren Buffet to paint his belly for her new book (36:32) What grief and loss can teach us (43:01) Plus much more… If you enjoyed this episode, check out the video, show notes and more at http://www.lewishowes.com/893 and follow at instagram.com/lewishowes

I’ll be back in two weeks with a new episode, but I wanted to bring this encore conversation with Mothers Against Police Brutality’s Sara Mokuria in a week where so many of us have been grappling with the issue of police violence and what we can do about it. This week, our consciousness has been focused on the tragic deaths of two black people, Botham Jean and Atiana Jefferson, who were murdered in their own homes by police officers. Botham was in his own apartment when an off duty police officer shot and killed him, allegedly mistaking him for an intruder in her own apartment. Recently, the woman who killed him was sentenced to only 10 years in prison for his killing. Atiana Jefferson, who was playing video games with her nephew in her own home at the time, was murdered when an officer sent to the house by a neighbor because of an open door, immediately shot and killed Atiana instead of checking on her wellbeing. I know many of us have been searching for some action we can take about this issue and I want to encourage you to do two things: first listen to this conversation with Sara Mokuria, one of the co-founders of Mothers Against Police Brutality. She will give you insight and advocacy steps from her own experience losing her father. And then, make a donation to Mothers Against Police Brutality, an organization that is seeking change by addressing policy and building police accountability, beginning in Texas but with nationwide impact. Inspired by my last conversation with trust-based philanthropy thought leader Pia Infante, our family committed to an ongoing monthly donation to support their work over time, and made the donation in honor of two men who lost their lives to police violence over the last year in my own area, Chinedu Okobi and Miles Hall. As you listen, I hope you’ll consider making a donation as well and I also challenge you to identify just one person who you can share this episode and this call to action with; together we can start to take steps in the direction of police accountability. Now here is my conversation with Sara Mokuria. Much appreciation, P.S. Know someone who would love this conversation? Click forward now to pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. Make a donation by visiting http://mothersagainstpolicebrutality.org/donate/. As compelling was Sara’s exploration of the vision she has for our future... of vibrant communities where we invest in our young people, lean into and value our differences, and where each of us taps into our own unique magic to get us there. The importance of finding your own unique magic to make a difference and why Sara keeps her heart open to welcome people to this cause when they come to it Our prayer and invitation to you the listener Resources mentioned in this episode Women Podcasters in Solidarity Mothers Against Police Brutality The Movie 13th, directed by Ava Duvernay The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander Drug Policy Alliance EP31: Brave Spaces and Solidarity with “Rad Women” Author Kate Schatz Ep 27: Courageous Conversations about Race with Nicole Lee Ep 07: Living Out Loud with Jenjii Hysten How the Irish Became White by Noel Ignatiev Dallas Woman Turns Tragedy Into Conversation About Race, an article where Sara talks about the system and not police officers being the problem Stride Toward Justice: 9 Steps to Change Policing in America - policy recommendations from Mothers Against Police Brutality The Movement for Black Lives Campaign Zero This Week’s Three-fold Challenge Have courageous conversation about these issues with your families during the holidays. Highlights Sara’s passion of helping her students read books they’re actually going to love How bookstagram pushed her to think about how she could get her students to enjoy reading outside of school. How much say Sara has in the books she includes on her curriculum. The volume breakdown of classics vs. contemporary literature she teaches in her classes and whether she’s happy with that number. How Sara feels about the idea that there are certain books every single student needs to read. Sara’s favorite contemporary books that she teaches. Contemporary books Sarah would love to teach, but can’t for whatever reason. Classics that Sara thinks should always be taught in classrooms. Classics Sara thinks should be eliminated from school curricula. Whether Sara and I actually did our high school reading. I learn a lot from all the women around me (almost my whole team is women). But today’s guest is extra special. Not only is she the youngest self-made female billionaire in America (wow, right??), she is also the mother of four young kids, the wife of another podcast guest, Jesse Itzler, and the founder and CEO of the massively popular women’s apparel brand SPANX. Yes, Sara Blakely is a legend among entrepreneurs. When we got to sit down and talk for the podcast, I kept finding out new things to admire Sara for. She struggled a lot in school (me too!). She sold fax machines door to door FOR 7 YEARS before she had the idea for Spanx. She was rejected by every manufacturing company she took her idea to. But she didn’t let any of that stop her. Sara’s hustle and can-do attitude is just one thing I learned about her in this interview. We dive into dealing with grief, how to scale companies the right way, what it’s like to be mentored by Richard Branson, and much more. By making it very easy for the editor to work with her. She keeps in touch with editors to foster a relationship, and she lets them in early in the process, sharing vision boards so they know what she’s working on for their upcoming editorial calendars. How does getting published change things? The short answer from Sara is that it doesn’t. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t been good for business, but she says she hasn’t seen any clients come through her door saying, “I saw you featured in this magazine.” But the benefits go beyond direct client bookings. For instance, Sara throws events in her hometown, so people can “meet the designer” who has just been featured in a magazine. She’s licensed in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Kansas.   After losing her best friend to an accidental drug overdose in 2015, Jen was completely devastated and needed to find a way survive her broken heart. In 2016, a new job opportunity led her from a large law firm in Boston to an in-house position in Overland Park, Kansas. While she didn't know a soul in the entire state, Jen knew she needed her life to be different, and she jumped on the opportunity.   Within a month of moving to Kansas, the thought came to Jen one day - seemingly out of the blue - that she had to find a new way of creating her own happiness. So, she bought a farm and started a senior dog rescue. At this point, Always & Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary has been up and running for 14 months and has saved the lives of over 350 dogs.   Jen was featured on the “Messages of Hope” radio show with Suzanne Giesemann, she was visited by famed Kansas City Secret Santa, and Always & Furever has been featured on local news stations and is to be featured in an article in The Kansas City Star.   Jen has only just begun this incredible Always & Furever journey, and she can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of the precious souls that have touched so many lives, making their way in and out of a little red barn, in a small town in Kansas, filled with so much love.   Connect with Jen and Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary: Website:  alwaysandfurever.love Instagram: www.instagram.com/alwayandfurever Facebook: facebook.com/nevertoolateforhappilyeverafter   Connect with Sara McArdle and Women Who Went for It: Facebook: www.facebook.com/womenwhowentforit  Website: www.womenwhowentforit.com  Nominate a Podcast Guest: www.saramcardle.com/podcast-guest  Email: womenwhowentforit@gmail.com  Phone: 503.893.2043   Want to make your own career change? Today’s episode is with Sara Garnier, a massage therapist focused on craniosacral therapy. Her business is called Presence Bodywork, which, once you hear from her, you’ll see why that’s the perfect name. After dealing with Lyme disease a few years ago, Sara went through a transformation which left her much more rooted in intuition, embodiment practices, and the most intensive self-care we’ve ever heard about! We have deep conversation about so many things, including how she moved from a more general massage therapy background to specializing in craniosacral therapy, how we often work too hard in an effort to prove our worth, and how she determines her personal energy capacity, which is all very inspiring. TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: Sara’s background in massage therapy and how she came to specializing in craniosacral therapy Her first time turning down a client and how that made her feel Famine/scarcity mindset Allowing space for transformation in her clients and herself The importance of knowing her limits That no one really prepares you for the emotional side of being your own boss How Sara transitioned from being an employee to being her own boss Getting embodied (paying attention to bodily signals) Committing to listening to intuition is its own accomplishment The “hustle” and not listening to our bodies is destructive Working to prove one’s worth (subconsciously or not) The slippery slope of working constantly How Sara determines her capacity and creates her schedule accordingly, even quantifying the hours of rest needed to preserve her energy Sara’s self-care practices (truly next-level!) Practicing present awareness and being “ridiculously tender” with herself Drawbacks and benefits of social media (“a socially acceptable form of addiction”) What she’s intentionally stepped away from and released, in order to make more space for what matters Sara’s spiritual practices and how they’ve impacted her life, business, and how she interacts with clients and others in her life The power of the somatic meditation retreat that she had just returned from Giving ourselves more credit when dealing with traumas of all sizes It’s okay if all of this spiritual stuff is difficult - it’s all a practice! Meeting everything with presence as it shows up, and not turning away Sara’s astrological chart and how it reflects in her business and personal life Friendly reminder: we are okay the way we are, and we don’t need to be fixed - we can hold space for each other! In-person and virtually, she coaches women to find the work that delights and energizes them, and aligns with their purpose. Sara wasn't born with an obvious "calling.” In fact, while she knew when she started working as a professional graphic designer that something was missing, she waited nearly 20 years to make a change. In 2013, she began practicing Compassionate Communication—a discipline that helps people transform negative self-talk, identify what matters most to them and take steps toward a more wonderful life. Her experience of empowering herself and others was so transformative that she pursued a Whole Person Coach® certification and launched a business to help women recognize and make the most of their unique gifts, and—like her—spend the rest of their lives doing work they’re madly in love with. Sara Dant is a historian, professor, and chair of the history department at Weber State University. She’s also the author of one of my new favorite books: Losing Eden: An Environmental History of the American West. Sara’s work touches many of the topics we discuss regularly on this podcast, including conservation, water, public lands, building consensus around divisive issues, historical figures of the West, and much more. As you’ll hear in our conversation, Sara has a unique ability to explain complex and potentially dry topics regarding the American West in an engaging and easy-to-understand manner. • Whether you’re like me and have read dozens of books on the history of the West or simply have a general interest the subject, I think Losing Eden should be mandatory reading. It lays out the history of the region, starting with human migration into North America 15-30,000 years ago and ends in the present-day West with our scramble to find solutions to natural resource shortages and climate change. For me, the book connected many different time periods and concepts into one cohesive narrative, while simultaneously introducing me to new ideas and people, all in just under 200 pages. • Sara and I had a great conversation covering key concepts from her book, as well as her life as a historian, teacher, and life-long Westerner. We chat about the concept of the "tragedy of the commons,” conservation versus preservation, and the myth that the West was a sort of Garden of Eden prior to European settlement. We also dig into some of the key historical figures of the West, including Brigham Young, John Wesley Powell, Theodore Roosevelt, and John Muir. Most of you know that I’m weirdly obsessed with Teddy Roosevelt—I’ve got a life-sized cardboard cut-out of him in my office, for Pete’s sake—so Sara gently offers a more “balanced" examination of his conservation legacy. Listen Here: iTunes | Overcast Keep Up with the North Star Podcast Introduction My guest today is Sara Dietschy, a YouTuber and content creator based in New York City.  With more than 300,000 subscribers, Sara’s created a docu-series, a daily vlog and recently launched a new podcast called The Creative Exchange. Sara is one of the most inspiring people I know. Before she moved to New York, Sara grew up in Dallas, went to college to study computer science, dropped out, and moved to Nashville. Through her work, Sara explores the intersection of technology and creativity. Sara rocks the YouTube scene with her sincerity and a contagious zest for life.  The internet spells the end of oppressive creative regimes, the death of gatekeepers and the fall of Hollywood. On the Internet, agility is essential. In this day in age, vlogs showcase the everyday experiences of real people with real stories that exist in real life.  We live at a time where people have deep and intimate relationships with their favorite YouTubers — people they’ve never met before that feel like their best friends. Millennials and Gen Z have the luxury to ask what is my passion and use the internet to build a career. On the internet, people want to connect with individuals, not massive companies or a bland television ad. They want to connect with people, not companies, and it’s influencers like Sara that are leading the charge. In this episode, Sara explains how she rose to Youtube stardom and the characteristics she’s noticed between herself and other successful influencers.  Sara and I go back to her time as a musician — an on-stage performer who played in front of large audiences. We talk about all the Sundays Sara spent at a local Megachurch in Dallas, where she played in a band and was blown away by top-notch production quality.  We discuss what it means to do work you love, and the power of staying busy, how Sara’s built a career around the vlogosphere. Finally, we talk about her first viral moments, how she forced herself to become extroverted and the takeover of new media.  Links Sara’s Youtube Channel Sara’s Podcast, The Creative Exchange Sara’s Instagram Sara’s Twitter Sara’s Facebook Sara’s Website Sara on Medium Time Stamps 1:27 Sara talks about who she is and what to expect from her Youtube channel 2:14 How Sara turned from a basketball-loving tomboy into a musician 6:39 Sara’s first love and how it gave her the most creative highs of her career thus far 7:28 Her transition from music to videography and how her church was the driving factor for her moving behind the lens 10:08 Her move to Nashville and how she leveraged value in turn for artist’s time for her first docu-series called Creative Spaces 11:35 Sara’s belief that the harder you work the luckier you get and how she notices serendipity in her life the more she works towards her goals 12:50 Sara’s, very calculated, first viral moments featuring TWO shoutouts from Casey Neistat 17:01 Sara talks about her passion for creativity and what motivates her throughout the process 18:20 The one characteristic Sara has found in common amongst all of her passionate friends and interviewees 24:36 The three pillars Sara believes makes a good Youtube channel 26:26 Sara’s Youtube career, from 0 to over 300,000 followers 33:09 Sara talks about why audiences relate to an individual over a brand 36:22 The clear divide between Hollywood and new media, as proven by the Cannes Film Festival 39:52 Sara’s rule to always be working on something or learning about topics outside of her job in order to have that essential escape 45:40 The changes happening in New York City and Sara’s prediction that Hudson Yards is becoming the next Midtown 50:32 How our ecosystem is built around cars and how storytellers may impact the sharing economy 51:41 Where Sara’s inspiration comes from and how she works with deadlines 55:53 How Sara trained herself to become more extroverted so she could meet more creatives 58:32 Sara’s vision for the future and her perspective to see it as a never-ending journey 1:00:24 How Sara sees her future on Youtube Quotes “Serendipity I think is huge. Being in a place where things are happening is a big deal. If you want to make music videos for country stars for the rest of your life, you have to be in Nashville. If you want to be a creative business type and you want flavors from different industries, be in New York. If you want strictly entertainment and acting, you have to be in LA. I fully believe in location helping tremendously.” “Everyone who is doing something that they love, and it’s never all rainbows and butterflies, but to the people who are doing what they love-it’s because they have gone through so many things before that to figure out what they want to be doing now. I think a lot of people wait around, and wait for something to hit them. They wait for their passion to hit them and it so doesn’t happen that way.” “I myself, as much as a person who creates it and consumes it, am so much more motivated by people in the real world. Instead of watching Wolf of Wall Street, I’m going to watch a couple of Gary Vaynerchuk Vlogs. I am way more inspired by seeing the behind the scenes of a CEO in real life than a fabricated story of this crazy Wall Street dude.” “I think if you just have these huge massive goals-like one massive goal every five years-I don’t think it’s the healthiest thing. If you don’t achieve it, you’re destroyed. If you do achieve it, you’re going to be empty inside and be like, what’s next? I always have these miniature things in my head, I want to meet these five people, I want to do these five things. If they happen sick, if they don’t, move on to the next thing. It’s taught me to be stoked on the journey because you’re never going to arrive.” Conclusion You can support the North Star Podcast by leaving a review on iTunes. In 2013, she began practicing Compassionate Communication—a discipline that helps people transform negative self-talk, identify what matters most to them and take steps toward a more wonderful life. Her experience of empowering herself and others was so transformative and inspiring that she pursued a Whole Person Coach® certification and launched a business to help women recognize and make the most of their unique gifts, and—like her—find work they’re madly in love with. Today, she works one-on-one coaching women, she hosts workshops and events, and she chairs the board of a youth organization which builds interfaith communities that embody a culture of peace. More than anything, Sara loves to help others connect more deeply with themselves and each other to make the rest of their lives the best of their lives.  Connect with Sara on her website @ https://www.saramcardle.com/Sara’s Podcast: Women Who Went For It On Facebook: SaraMcArdle Coaching & Women Who Went For It  On Instagram: Sara McArdle Coaching

It’s an honor and responsibility to share this Episode #33 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with Sara Mokuria, co-founder of Mothers Against Police Brutality. As compelling was Sara’s exploration of the vision she has for our future... of vibrant communities where we invest in our young people, lean into and value our differences, and where each of us taps into our own unique magic to get us there. This episode dedicated by: Mothers Against Police Brutality founder Collette Flanagan, whose son, Clinton Allen, was shot and killed by the Dallas Police in March of 2013.    Topics discussed in this episode: Sara’s joyous childhood which changed forever when her father was killed by Dallas police officers when she was just 10 years old How Sara’s mother was her fiercest advocate, even as her mother grappled with the deeply traumatic effects of her husband’s killing and the lack of support as a crime victim. Sara Shepard is the author of the popular NYT bestselling series "Pretty Little Liars" and "The Lying Game". She takes us behind the scenes of her newest book, "Follow Me", the second book in "The Amateurs" series. We unpack how ghostwriting can help hone your craft and develop your own novel, and how ghostwriting created opportunities for Sara to develop the “Pretty Little Liars” book series with Alloy Entertainment. For “Pretty Little Liars” fans, we dive into detail about the book series and Sara’s thoughts on the TV series adaptation. Further into our conversation, we talk about coping with imposter syndrome as a writer,  ways to overcome writer’s block and unlock new plot lines, how outlining can help you keep track of complicated plot lines during your writing process, and how to manage the pressure of strict deadlines. We also talk about how to protect your emotions when writing about dark and intense scenes or characters, how to create a villain readers won’t forget, and how to write action scenes that will captivate your readers.
