The kidnapping of June Robles rocked the nation in 1934. The six-year-old from Tuscon, Arizona was abducted on her way home from school one afternoon and held for ransom. Her kidnappers and whereabouts remained unknown for weeks. And then a strange tip led to a huge break in the case. This unique kidnapping story has a happy ending, but still remains unsolved today. President Donald Trump has refused to release his tax returns. He has sued his former accountants and Deutsche Bank to keep them from releasing his returns after they were subpoenaed to do so. And his treasury secretary has refused to provide the returns to Congress. But bit by bit, The New York Times’ Susanne Craig and Russ Buettner have been gathering returns and tax data from Trump’s earlier years. In the latest installment, they show how Trump claimed over a billion dollars in business losses from 1985 to 1994. In some years, he lost more than any other taxpayer. In this Trump, Inc. podcast extra, we speak to Craig about how she got the story, what she found and what to look for if and when the president’s tax returns are released. “You don’t lose this much money unless you’re a really bad businessman,” Craig told us. In a severely over-budgeted and tragically lost filmed sequence, Ol' Matty slew Breaderick the demon, who turned out to be a lousy side-kick, friend and understandable co-host. Our hero now follows the advice of Jules Verne's subterranean adventurers, delving deep into the earth, the courage of humanity, and his own snickers bar food reserves in an attempt to finally escape the catacombs. I keep telling him Snickers weren't a good food ration for his journey (other than his delicious word sandwiches), but he keeps bringing up that they're full of nuts. Well, so is he. His spirit has somewhat returned since slaying Breaderick. It was brutal. I wish you could have seen it. I think at one point Ol' Matty literally consumed all of the souls Breaderick himself had harvested. I guess that makes Ol' Matty a demon as well as undead, but who's counting? Me. I'm counting. The idiot is going to become a God with his lunacy, while me, with my stupid sane and responsible decisions, shall die a sane mortal, and he'll be all like, "The key is just enjoying yourself" as he ascends to Valhalla and Olympus at ONCE. Despite losing oxygen and a lot of bread, Ol' Matty explores every layer beneath Verne's earth's crust. He always was one to eat the whole pizza. With neither Hemingway or Plath to guide him, Ol' Matty returns to the glamorous whimsy of French literature of his youth, and using a variety of sources, spelunks through bread (Background), meat/meat-substitute (Story), cheese (Characters), sauce (Themes) and seasoning (final thoughts/feelings). It's not easy to make a sandwich out of a story that takes place 20,000 feet below the earth's surface, but by gum my boy did it. A Journey to the Centre of the Earth is the second of Jules Verne’s “voyages extraordinaires,” a vast project entailing nearly a score of novels about adventures on, beneath, and above the earth and seas. By combining diligent research into scientific fact and hypothesis with his natural bent as a storyteller, he moulded a popular form of narrative which appealed to his nineteenth century audience’s appetite for tales of wonder.Keeping with the theme, somehow, of The Bell Jar and The Snows of Kilimanjaro, the story is yet another journey through the darkest layers of the human psyche and back, as well as a ripping story of adventure. Yes, Ol' Matty, I know you wanted more swords. Science was their sword, sir! ...no, you're lame. Love stories? Love hearing about the tales of old with Ol' Matty but want to know them yourself? I must say, my Quixotes, that I think Jules Verne himself would be proud of this somehow at once fresh, faithful and buoyant revival of his story, and would laude the use of technology to listen - so by no means feel unfaithful or less legitimate by taking in the story with Audible's production of Journey to the Centre of the Earth, read by Tim Curry in a way that makes every layer of Verne's first iconic world bloom into life. The 2008 adaptation of Journey to the Centre of the Earth I will confess got me through purely on the shoulders of the mighty Brendan Fraser, however I did very much enjoy the concept of Vernians, a secret society that function on the premise that Jules Verne's works were non-fiction. Like the rest of the world, the 4D gimmick I found pretty lacklustre alas. The 1959 adaptation did its best but hasn't aged well, but if you really don't want to read I would say is the better bet, being labelled, "a silly but fun movie with everything you'd want from a sci-fi blockbuster – heroic characters, menacing villains, monsters, big sets and special effects," which ain't half bad at all and can scratch a mighty grand itch. The Demon Breaderick has run off with Ol' Matty's Kilimanjaro Sandwich, severing our hero's hand and hope in the process. In his despair, Ol' Matty finds an understanding voice in Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar", a hearty and heartfelt coming of age story about growth through pain and suffering.Published in 1963, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is Ol' Matty's only hope for survival as he lies desolate and bereft in the catacombs that may well soon become his own tomb. Breaderick, eating the Snows of Kilimanjaro sandwich, has also taken Ol' Matty's hand and his spirit. The bastard. It is both a blessing and a curse that The Bell Jar was so rich for analysis and such a challenge to translate into ingredients on every complex layer. Indeed, so raw and intense it was, that Ol' Matty tried to "DiCaprio my liver", in hopes for an accurate bloody sandwich and an Oscar to beat Breaderick to death with. So, yeah. He's mad. In every sense of the word.Now venturing beyond the comfortable shores of his Isle of Hemingway, Ol' Matty uses both his Pinky and his Brain, and a variety of sources, to tear into bread (Background), meat/meat-substitute (Story), cheese (Characters), sauce (Themes) and seasoning (final thoughts/feelings), and amazingly managed to incorporate a vegetable. My boy's growing up. Should have had a demon eat his hand and steal his lunch a long time ago.The Bell Jar is the only novel written by the American writer and poet Sylvia Plath. Originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963, the novel is semi-autobiographical, with the names of places and people changed. Nevertheless, it rings so earnestly it's like having stolen into her most personal journals. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef because the protagonist's descent into mental illness parallels Plath's own experiences with what may have been clinical depression or bipolar II disorder. Plath died by suicide a month after its first UK publication (believing her novel a failure due to its lukewarm initial reception). The novel was published under Plath's name for the first time in 1967 and was not published in the United States until 1971, in accordance with the wishes of both Plath's husband, Ted Hughes, and her mother.In a way, it's a psychological journey to Hell and back, how Esther loses her mind, soul and identity and then through a personal odyssey filled with blood, lightning and ghosts from her past returns from the darkest depths unto a new dawn. Tech News Apple recently submitted a proposal to add 13 new emojis to the Unicode Consortium. They include a prosthetic arm and leg, hearing aids, as well as people using sign language and a wheelchair. Apple worked with the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, the American Council of the Blind and National Association of the Deaf, to develop the emojis. For more information: https://www.theverge.com/2018/4/3/17193020/apple-emojis-disability-representation-media-carrie-wade-interview Featured App: Spending Tracker Available for iPhone, iPad, Windows and Android I use Spending Tracker everyday to increase my awareness of how much my family is spending and how much we are saving. Spending Tracker is easy to use and helps me feel more control over my money. I track expense by the month but the app allows you to choose to track expenses weekly, monthly or yearly. You can also set a budget in the app. You can schedule repeated transactions daily, weekly or monthly as well as export data to CSV for use in a spreadsheet or export the data to a PDF for viewing and printing. I was able to edit expense and income categories and add custom categories. I can also sync my entries on Spending Tracker on all of my iOS devices. The data can be backed up on Dropbox. Tech Tip Wrestling with AutoCorrect? I often find that autocorrect changes my words incorrectly. I finally found out how to correct this! This article says that the keyboard’s dictionary file may have saved incorrect entries. If you do not have a lot of custom words you have saved and want to start over so the auto-correction tool learns new words from now on, you can delete the old dictionary. To do this, open the Settings app on the home screen. Next, select General and scroll to the bottom of the list. Select Reset and then Reset Keyboard Dictionary. You may be asked to enter your passcode. Then delete the old dictionary. If you do not want to delete the current dictionary, you can turn off the auto-correction tool and make other adjustments in the iOS keyboard settings. Tap the Settings icon on the iPhone’s Home screen and choose General. Scroll down the screen and select Keyboard. If you have a tendency to repeat typos in certain words or want to expand abbreviations into full phrases, tap Text Replacement to set up automatic replacements as you type. Tech Tip Preserving Your Child’s Artwork We have all had the experience of feeling overwhelmed with the clutter of our kids’ artwork and simultaneously feeling guilty for getting rid of it. Your phone or tablet can solve this problem for you. There are several mobile apps that allow you to photograph your children’s art work and archive them. This can be a convenient way to save (and share) the memories. Keepy (for Android, iOS and Kindle) is one app in this category and offers the ability to record audio and video on the saved schoolwork from the child. Canvsly (for Android and iOS) is another app for saving and organizing your kids’ art and school projects. Swype is a popular Android app that allowed you to type by swiping your fingers across the keyboard. This gesture typing app has been extremely popular. It was also a great keyboard for many users with special needs and was easy to use w a single hand. LifeHacker suggests that Android users who liked Swype use SwiftKey or the default Google keyboard. For iOS, iPad and iPhone, users, they suggest SwiftKey or Google’s Gboard. LastPass allows you to share passwords for single websites with your family or coworkers without jeopardizing security for other sites. Tech Tip: Moving your landline number to a mobile phone is possible! This is great news for me as we are about to (finally) get rid of our landline. If you are staying in the same area, your cellphone carrier can move your landline number over to mobile for you. Google Drive is Google’s cloud storage service. It works well with the rest of Google’s system. Within Google Drive you can store, organize and share documents of all types. You can also store photos and videos. Google Drive syncs across almost all devices making it very convenient. You can also share documents and work on them at the same time from different devices. This makes it a great tool for group projects at work or school. It is also convenient for shared home documents. We used a shared document in Google Drive to coordinate flooding claims after Harvey. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Google Drive. It is extremely convenient when used correctly. I, however, have multiple Google accounts and can never figure out exactly where my documents are stored. My advice is to only have one Google Drive account! Tech Tip My tech tip today is about language translation tools. This tip is from the New York Times. Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s Bing browsers have built in translation function for web pages. Look for the “translate this page” link. Microsoft’s Translator app and Google’s Google Translate app are both available for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android and can be used to translate portions of websites and documents as well as verbal conversations into many languages. We're living in an age of “subjective sovereignty,” where life is “all the feels” and emotional offense is king. It is a time less describable by policy discord and differences of opinion, but instead by vindictive joy and holy rage. Arguments are couched in first-person noise—disagreements have the sting of personal attacks—which means the arguments are, on the whole, harder to argue or critique. As we've become “touchier” about the things we care about, the logic behind those sensitivities has also faded. This trend goes hand in hand with another trend that's been provoked, namely, that America is only becoming more spiritually bankrupt/unmoored. David Brooks recently wrote along these lines, that Religious frameworks no longer organize public debate. Secular philosophies that grew out of the Enlightenment have fallen apart. We have words and emotional instincts about what feels right and wrong, but no settled criteria to help us think, argue and decide. You'd think this would lead to the age of great moral relativism, where all the objective strictures are let go and the only mantra remaining is “You Do You.” But this hasn't happened. Instead, Brooks writes, “society has become a free-form demolition derby of moral confrontation.” It seems we feel so much, but we can't seem to agree on why we feel it and who's to blame. So the answer, of course, is to get some Truth, right? Get to church! Fall on the Rock! God provides the mooring—the why behind your hurt—and the cross gives you your scapegoat. The Good News gives you your needed justification. But what do you do with all that rage? Therapy? I don't know about you, but the term “therapeutic” has always bristled—it sounds like the hippy-dippy opposite of “grounded” or “objective.” It sounds a lot more like “You Do You”—do what feels good to you. But this is largely a misunderstanding, mostly because of counseling that truly hasn't helped. Just as God gives us the Good News, God also administers his healing in the gracious counsel of another. With the help of some of our favorites, let's look into the relationship between the objective News of the Gospel, and very subjective (though no-less-real) needs we carry around with us every day, and how those needs are addressed within the realm of pastoral care and counseling.
