The Brownble Podcast is an incredible resource for anyone on the journey towards a vegan lifestyle. Hosted by Kim, the podcast offers a wealth of information, inspiration, and support for those looking to make a positive impact on their health and the planet through plant-based living. One of the best aspects of this podcast is Kim's warm and encouraging nature. She genuinely believes that every step towards veganism is important and she cheers listeners on every step of the way. Her authenticity and non-judgmental approach make her feel like a supportive friend who is there to guide you through your journey.

Another great aspect of The Brownble Podcast is its holistic approach to health. Kim covers not only physical health but also mental well-being, recognizing that both are essential for sustainable change. She provides practical tips and resources for incorporating plant-based meals into your diet, as well as advice on navigating social situations and overcoming challenges in a non-vegan world. The podcast also includes delicious recipes that are both inspiring and easy to follow.

One potential downside of The Brownble Podcast is that it may not appeal to everyone. While it offers valuable information and support for vegans, some listeners who are not yet fully committed to a plant-based lifestyle may find it less relevant. Additionally, the podcast primarily focuses on cooking techniques, meal planning, and personal stories rather than delving into more complex topics related to animal rights or environmental issues.

In conclusion, The Brownble Podcast is an exceptional resource for anyone interested in adopting a vegan lifestyle or simply incorporating more plant-based meals into their diet. Kim's genuine enthusiasm, authentic approach, and wealth of knowledge make her an excellent mentor on this journey. Whether you're new to veganism or have been practicing for years, this podcast provides valuable information, inspiration, and support to help you live a healthier life while making a positive impact on the planet.

Season Finale! What is MBSR Mindfulness? A Beginner's Guide to Mindfulness and Mindful Eating

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 31, 2025 45:52

Many years ago I was in a cycle of a certain kind of stress that was bubbling just beneath the surface, in a way that didn't scream urgency as you would perhaps feel during a big life transition, exam season or project deadline season, the illness of a family member, but rather, the kind of daily stress that keeps you on a hamster wheel, moving through your day scratching things off to-do lists, with your mind firmly on the next thing. I started having this very uncomfortable feeling that I was ending my day and when my head hit the pillow, even when I had gotten a lot of things done that day, I felt as though I had missed the whole day. I felt as though time was rushing past me and twirling me around as if caught in the force of white rapids. Had I even taken a conscious breath in the entire day? Had I really been present in my conversations? Had I even looked at my dogs as we were going on our long walk that I looked forward to so much? Had I even looked at the beauty of the woods we were walking in? As it tends to happen, when I looked at my food choices that day, I had similar questions. Why did I eat that food I really didn't feel like eating just because it was easiest? Did I even taste my food? How long did it take me to eat? How was it? What was my favorite part? The answers to all of these questions were either a mind left blank, or a big, no. As in no I hadn't been present in anything I had done that day, only in the race to get everything done. Something had to change, and I did a little Google search and found something that changed my life forever. A free, open sourced, no email required course on something called mindfulness, MBSR mindfulness to be specific. What happened during the next few weeks was so astounding, and it still keeps me company to this day, it has changed my relationship with food, and it has been, above all else, a time stretcher. In today's episode, I give you a beginners guide to MBSR mindfulness and how it connects to mindful eating and veganism. I'll provide you with resources, courses, apps, tools, videos and especially, a guide for getting started. For the videos and links mentioned in today's episode click here or visit brownble.com/blog

In today's book club episode I'll be talking about the book Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationship with Food Through Myths, Metaphors, and Storytelling by Dr. Anita Johnston. It has been a go-to resource in the field of eating disorder recovery since its original publication in 1996, and I found it so eye opening and helpful that I felt I had to give it special attention in the podcast and tell you a bit about what you can find within its pages. I can't recommend this book enough for anyone who has or is struggling with an eating disorder, for parents, siblings or partners of people with eating disorders, even for clinicians. Through stories and metaphors Anita guides us to the deeply rooted issues associated with our relationship to food, our grasping of disordered habits as a defense mechanism, and how the same folk tales that have been passed down from generation to generation can be used as tools to understand disordered eating and move towards a better relationship with food. We'll explore the psychological discomfort that arises when our beliefs and actions don't align and how this can bring up challenges when attempting any changes that are so deeply linked to our value systems (veganism and our love of animals is one example but not the only one we discuss in this episode). We'll also discuss strategies for accepting and moving forward in spite of experiencing cognitive dissonance as imperfect vegans and making the shift towards a more ethical and sustainable way of eating, a kinder way to view imperfections or stumbles, a kinder way to view our bodies and improve our relationship with food, and more. Whether you're a vegan looking to understand your own thought processes or a curious observer interested in psychology and change, this episode is sure to offer valuable insights and practical tips for moving forward as well. Taylor Wolfram RDN on Navigating Food Fears and What to Supplement as a Vegan, Part 2

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful end to 2024 and start to the new year, that you're reenergized, and excited for anything you've set out to do this year. January is such a strange month, it's filled with that new start, new you energy, and all the feels because of the Holidays coming to an end, it's also Veganuary and the month of so many new year's resolutions when it comes to our habits, and so many people (myself included), chose this time of year once upon a time to make the change and go vegan or at lest start taking more steps in that direction. So to start off the year I thought I'd bring you part 2 of our much anticipated conversation with registered dietitian nutritionist Taylor Wolfram, to continue where we left off in part 1 discussing how to build balanced vegan meals and navigating common food fears associated with vegan eating, and because Taylor is Taylor, and she is such a pro at making sure people are getting everything they need, it again turned into a masterclass of so many of those vegan nutrition basics. In part 1 which I highly recommend listening to first if you haven't already, Taylor talked about her own path to going vegan and becoming a dietitian, she gave us the lowdown of how to build balanced meals and a method for meal building that is as simple as it gets while still covering all your bases, and we began discussing common food fears like oils, vegan processed foods, grains and more. In today's episode we continue talking about common food fears like the fear of too many carbohydrates in a vegan diet, or eating carbohydrates and starches at night, our consumption of fruit, more on oils as in, whether there are some she recommends more, and a big one, the fear supplementing within a vegan diet. What I wasn't expecting within this episode though, is that when talking about that last fear, Taylor gives us a master introduction into supplementation for vegans. Perhaps one of the biggest questions we get on a regular basis, “what should I supplement as a vegan?”, Taylor talks about it all in this episode. Taylor Wolfram is a licensed registered dietitian nutritionist, a long-time vegan and owner of a weight-inclusive nutrition therapy practice. She is a Certified Befriending Your Body Teacher and works with adults who are interested in ditching the diet mentality, reconnecting with their bodies and learning to trust their inner wisdom. She also specializes in vegan nutrition and created the Anti-Diet Vegan Nutrition Online Course, which I am a student of and can tell you, it's amazing and covers so much when it comes to vegan nutrition without fear or obsession. I thought Taylor was the perfect way to bring in the new year, because I'm pretty certain I can speak for both of us when I say, we can have fantastic nutrition as vegans, without the added obsession, fear or worry, with a little education, which in my opinion is Taylor's superpower, other than teaching the internet her amazing nooch tofu which I make on a regular basis. End of the Year Episode: Reflections, Purpose, Resolutions and a Little Stoic Wisdom

It's our last post and episode of the year, and with these sort of time markers, no matter how present I always try to be, there's no way to not catch the end of year bug and look back or look forward. Growing up I had a huge new year's resolution tradition with my mother. We'd sit in our living room, put on some music and write down a list of all the goals we wanted tor each the following year. We'd cut up the list into little strips of paper and stick them in a box or in our Christmas stockings to find the following year and see how we did. There was a big flaw in our tradition, in that if a goal is set and put away with Christmas ornaments in a box in the basement, never to be checked back into again until it's time for the final test, most plans dwindle. You've heard me talk about focusing on systems rather than goals before, and I believe this is the secret sauce to getting anything done, not to mention the full practice of presence and mindfulness in action, not to look ahead at what the dreamy end will look like, but to be in the here and now taking action on the tools and practices that will get us there. We have a full episode on goals and systems in our post and episode titled 4 Key Habits of Habit Formation and Maintenance for more on this topic and lots of examples, but one thing that is key when talking about those systems and the goals they'll guide you to, is that you need reminders. You need to keep them where you can see them, touch them, play with them, so that they stay in your surroundings as guiding lights and reminders of what's important to you. In today's episode I look back and forward, sharing the lessons this year brought and turning them into resolutions for next year. Each of them, perfectly aligned if your goal is going vegan in the new year, or taking more steps in that direction. To end the episode I share three pieces of wisdom from Stoic philosophy to help with the three biggest sticking points when going vegan. When it comes to sitting around that beautiful Holiday table, something happens when we're surrounded by people who love us, where the invisible adult line called independence and autonomy is blurred, wiped out somehow, and all topics seem like fair game. As vegans we need to deal with conversations about why we aren't eating the non-vegan apple pie and what's the difference if you just have "a little butter", navigate questions about grass fed beef, animals who are treated well, mom and pop farms, and the carnivore diet. If you're in recovery from an eating disorder or disordered eating you may have to listen to people talking about their exercise regimes and what diet they're on. If you're just a regular human, you may have to navigate comments on your single status, or your childless or child free status, your child raising ways, your job status, how your body has changed. Mix a large family gathering with some extended family you haven't seen in a while, alcohol, traditions and especially food traditions, and you'll find yourself in conversations around the table where you might need a few skills that run along a spectrum of brushing it off, to a little grace and understanding, to a big dose of boundary setting. This is what we'll be talking about in today's post and episode, how to set boundaries in conversations around the Holidays, whether these surround the topics of being vegan, or any other life choice or change. Today I have a total treat for you in that you'll get to meet one of my favorite podcasters, Michele Olender, vegan life coach and host of the Vedge your Best Podcast. You know me and the way I talk about veganism, I meet people where they're at, I respect the journey and timing of each person, I understand and have empathy for the fact that this change happens differently for different people. I'm not a proponent of adding shame, blame or guilt, or the idea of reaching perfection when you're on this journey to eating more plants and living vegan. I'm telling you all this because although I listen to a ton of podcasts, I don't listen to a lot of vegan podcasts. It's a short list of timeless shows from advocates who I feel talk about these issues in a way that is actually practical, joyful, doable and fun, without excessive fear mongering and like you're talking to a knowledgeable friend. All this to say that Michele's podcast is all about the motivation, all about the inspiration, she has the best voice in the podcasting universe, so soothing that listening to her is like meditating. Most importantly, she talks about these issues and making the transition to veganism in a way that is truly inspiring and refreshing. In today's conversation we talk about her own journey into this lifestyle and why being an advocate for her daughter started a path of her own that transformed her life (we wouldn't have her incredible podcast without it!). We talk about life stages and going vegan later in life, aging, and what different life stages brought to the table for her. We discuss that process of embracing that we're getting older, and we swap opinions of the current focus on longevity. She shares all about the role of a coach and how she supports her clients in making big changes, we get into hot territory discussing ex-vegans, and she gives us some great takeaways when it comes to what to expect when going vegan or making any big life change. Michele Olender is a Podcaster and Vegan Life Coach with a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and eCornell. She specializes in helping individuals to start, RE-start, or re-energize their vegan or plant based practice at any age. Vedge Your Best Podcast has published an episode every week since September 2020, and it's the only podcast aimed at teaching midlife women how to limit and eliminate the consumption of animal products without feeling deprived, overwhelmed or unsupported, even if no one you know is vegan. She shows you how living vegan is the superpower that will unlock your possibilities and give you the confidence to take on your next impossible goal, by doing it YOUR way. That is perhaps, the quality I admire most about Michele, she skips the dogma and goes straight to meeting people where they're at, while still challenging you, as all good coaches do. Jenn Friedman, Author of the Book Veganism and Eating Disorder Recovery on Being Vegan in Recovery

I still cannot believe that I got the chance to talk to the guest you're about to hear. I found Jenn thanks to the magic of Google, possibly over a decade ago, when I was looking to see if anyone was working on or talking about veganism and eating disorder recovery. Back then, Jenn was speaking about her own journey of recovery from an eating disorder and was using her beautiful music to help inspire and support fellow people in recovery. For the first time, I heard an echo of what I had been feeling, that being vegan, in the deepest sense of the word aka coming from a place of ethics and a desire to protect animals, isn't an automatic link to developing disordered habits with food or an eating disorder. Although it involves inherent restriction, there is much more nuance than what you might take at face value, and although it is the case, and you've heard me mention this many times before, that for some people struggling with an ED it is best to push the pause button on going vegan, for many others, respecting their deep desire to not eat animals, can be incredibly important in their recovery journey. It's been a long journey since I first found Jenn. Since then she's helped so many people, vegans and non vegans alike by becoming a mental health counselor. On a personal note, I have to tell you that from the very first time I sat down to write lists of potential guests, Jenn's name was right there, in a paragraph titled DREAM guests, which in my mind meant guests I thought were such a long shot but a girl can dream. Lo and behold she is here. I still can't believe it even though I should, because Jenn is the most approachable, kind, compassionate, knowledgeable and generous person. Jenn Friedman, MA, MHC-LP, is a Mental Health Counselor with a Masters Degree in Counseling from Goldsmiths University of London where she trained in psychodynamic therapy. She also holds a Mental Health Counseling Advanced Graduate Certificate from the University at Buffalo and a certification in Creative Arts and Health from the New School for Social Research. She works with adults of all ages who present with a variety of issues, including relationships, career transitions, eating disorders, substance misuse, anxiety, depression, grief, and loss. She has specialized training working with dementia patients and their families. Because of her specialized interest in eating disorders and veganism, Jenn published her book, Veganism and Eating Disorder Recovery in 2022 (Routledge), which aims to improve the discourse about veganism in eating disorder recovery. In her book, Jenn proposes a vegan-informed treatment model, adapted from the existing trauma-informed approach. In this conversation we talk about all the nuance involved in the intersection between being vegan and in the process of recovery. It's a conversation that will be so helpful for people in treatment to feel seen and heard, for new vegans, for anyone who might be feeling that something is slightly off with their relationship with food, but it is also in my opinion, so important if you are a clinician and work with this demographic. Best Books on Veganism: Hungry Beautiful Animals by Matthew Halteman, a Book Club

It is rare that after 12 years of being vegan I come across a book on veganism that surprises me with such a jolt that I find myself dedicating not one podcast episode to it but two. If you missed last week's episode of the podcast I sat down to have the most thrilling chat with Matthew Halteman, author of the book Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan, professor of philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and fellow in the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, UK, and although he articulates the essence of this book much better than I ever could, I wanted to do what we do with the books we find to be incredibly inspiring, to beg the people that sit in a circle in our figurative living room, all clutching their own paper gems to discuss, and beg them to make this the next book club pick. The great news is that when we have a book club episode in the More Plants Podcast, we have no one to convince, other than all our listeners when I say, whether you're a new vegan, veg curious, a seasoned vegan, or someone grappling with the ethics of eating animals, you must get this book, and I'll share why in today's episode. Seeing Ourselves as Aspiring Vegans: A Radical New Approach to Veganism with Hungry Beautiful Animals Author Matthew Halteman

Every now and then I read a book that creates such an impact in the way I see things that I can't keep it to myself. I feel the need to reach out from my microphone and into your headphones and lure you with an invisible finger with the smell of fresh vegan croissants, out of your chair, only this time, to your local bookstore, to get what I now consider to be the best book on veganism I've ever read. Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to Matt Halteman author of the book in question: Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan. He is a professor of philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan and fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, UK. You've got to leave it to a philosopher to connect our inner world, ethics, activism for animals and the practicalities of life and our messy habits in such a way that you'll feel yourself entering the pages of his book and wondering if the room has started spinning or it's your entire inner world, readjusting itself piece by piece, thinking of your daily choices in an entirely new way, where also, finally, shame and blame have no place on the page. I don't know how he did it, but only a true master and teacher of philosophy can take a framework many of us find intimidating and present it in a way where you feel you're more in a pub and less in a lecture hall, with someone who is wicked smart, telling you a story with so much wit and perfect writing you'll wonder why you ever thought philosophy and ethics could be a dry subject. Today's conversation with Matt, was exactly that, a perfect example of what you get in the pages of the book: an inspiring and hopeful talk about the choices we make, the belief systems we have, and how we can take steps to align our values and ethics with our daily habits. We talk about his own journey of going vegan after having three catalysts, including a four legged friend named Gus, he shares how his family's animal farming background inspired his own path in an unusual way, why going vegan, being an aspiring vegan is a headspace we all want to hang out in, whether we've been vegan for 2 months or 2 decades. The role of comparison, shame and blame and why it's time for a shift in vegan advocacy and in our own view of a beautiful and possible world where we go from scarcity to flourishing. We get into those vegan ethical conundrums, how we can navigate relationships with loved ones who eat and live differently through knowledge and full acceptance of our “inner family” (perhaps the best part of this episode for me). More so than anything else, Matt will leave you intoxicated with joy and hope for the animals, our own inner peace and our place on this planet. When I sat down to record with Matt he was sitting in his office with the most impressive bookshelves filled with titles from one end to the other, but you'd never guess that a professor, a writer, a philosopher, can take you on a ride so fun and engaging that he has without a doubt developed one of the skills I admire most in a human, to take excessive amounts of interesting and intricate knowledge and centuries old wisdom, and give it to you straight. I loved his book so much we'll be having a separate installment with a special book club in depth look in our next episode, something you know I reserve for books that have made a profound impact in my life and have stuck with me in a way where, when someone asks that cruel question of “tell me what your top favorite books are”, the cover just appears in your mind's eye as if betraying all the others. In one of the most fun conversations I've had in our podcast, enjoy Matt Halteman, and his Hungry Beautiful Animals. I'm so thrilled to introduce you to our first restaurant owners and cookbook authors ever to be on the show! Their story is so inspiring. There is no question that starting a restaurant is capital R risky, stressful, scary and overwhelming, but what if it included the arrival of a hurricane two weeks later, then a pandemic, then the ebbs and flows of any business. How can you go from two friends who had a similar and separate dream to a partnership that takes you from cooking in a studio apartment, to pop ups to being showcased on the Food Network, YES! A fully plant-based restaurant made it all the way to Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Then take this to creating products, then to writing your own cookbook. Alex Mazzucca & Cara Duerr, the chefs, co-owners, and visionaries behind Seed to Sprout, have turned their passion for plant-based cuisine into one of the most celebrated brands on the Jersey Shore. What began as weekly pop-up dinners in 2011, quickly evolved into their restaurant Seed to Sprout — a must-visit destination for food lovers nationwide. Known for their inventive, flavor-forward dishes and welcoming atmosphere, their restaurant draws in both vegans and non-vegans alike. Their success has even caught the attention of Food Network's Guy Fieri, who featured them on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, praising their food as "delicious" and calling them true "pioneers" in the plant-based culinary scene. Join us today in talking about what it was like to cook and share food for first responders and a community in need after hurricane Sandy, just two weeks after opening their doors for the first time. Alex and Cara share with great honesty about the hardships and the joys of opening your own restaurant, how sometimes you need to backtrack on an expansion to reconnect with the other things that are important to you, how you can stay true to your vision no matter what your accountant says. They talk about their incredible restaurant on the Jersey shore, Seed to Sprout, their connection to the community, their drool worthy dishes, how their customers include everything from the yoga crowd to business men to construction workers, all looking for a different food option that is both tasty and that feels so good. It's one of those days folks. One of those days in which I get to interview one of my dream guests in the podcast, someone who you know well if you're a long time listener, reader or student because to me she is one of the top experts in vegan nutrition out there. I found her years ago thanks to the magic of google in an article she had written and immediately started following her. I've read perhaps most of her blog posts, I'm a die hard subscriber of her newsletter and a student of her incredible vegan nutrition course who you'll hear all about in today's episode. Something I've always loved about Taylor and that brought me great relief when reading her content is that although she's an advocate for veganism, an ethical vegan, a protector of all animals and anyone who doesn't have a voice, she is also a science nerd (I'm calling her that, and I love her for it), her articles have always had the most up to date research, if a new paper had come out and I had come across it, Taylor had written about it two days before. So all of her work is evidence based, but explained in lay person's terms (which you know is one of my favorite qualities in a ny communicator (the knowledge and the simplicity all wrapped up together). On top of it all Taylor is one of the few voices in the vegan movement who also specialize in that intersection of veganism and eating disorder recovery, and her content, although based on all the research that is out there, isn't about instilling fear, but rather, uplifting you into knowing what you need to know about vegan nutrition while supporting you to develop a positive and healthy relationship with food and body, that is above all, centered around peace. She also specializes in vegan nutrition and created the Anti-Diet Vegan Nutrition Online Course, which I am a student of and can tell you, it's amazing. In today's episode Taylor shares about her journey into veganism and then into the field of dietetics, she teaches us what to her is the meaning of good nutrition, and she gives us the simplest way to think about a “balanced plate”. We talk about food groups, we talk about protein needs, recommended servings and how you can start building delicious meals, and then we get into hot territory: food fears. In a time in which fears over specific foods run rampant, Taylor helps to set the record straight on what the research actually says and what her clinical experience brings to the table in discussing things like oils, vegan processed foods, grains, and much more. This is part 1 of my conversation with Taylor and part 2 will come your way really soon in which we go deeper into some of those food fears, all in the hopes that you learn some basics, meet those nutrient needs as a vegan and then your mental and heart space is free and peaceful to go about your life, without excessive worry or obsession. As a RDN, Amanda finds it rewarding to share her love of nutrition, fitness, and plant forward eating with others and help them reach their own wellness goals. You are also welcome to work with her if you aren't plant-based. She'll never pressure you to go plant-based in session. Our messages and views on veganism are so aligned and focused on progress and not perfection that you'll find a session with her, informative, educational and so supportive you'll feel like I feel after every time I talk to her, like someone just gave me a big comforting hug while inspiring me to up my game and reach for my goals. In our conversation we talked about her own journey to vegetarianism and then to veganism while in college, and how going vegan helped her have her best season as an athlete, and qualify for the Boston Marathon. We talk about how plants can fuel athletic performance and even run of the mill exercise for us non athlete folks (although she has a slightly different perspective on what constitutes an athlete that I think you'll love). Outside of athletics we talked about the role of a registered dietitian nutritionist, why it's a professional that might just change the moment of eating for you and arm you with knowledge and support tailored specifically to you. Amanda was also gracious enough to give us answers to so many and I mean SO many of your nutrition questions including talking about carbohydrates, calcium, magnesium, supplementation, how to fuel before and after exercise, the soy myth, whether it's safe or not to eat and how much we should be eating, the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to nutrition when they go vegan, where to get enough choline, protein powders and their place, whether we should exercise on an empty stomach, taking multivitamins and so much more. She is so knowledgeable, and because of her background in education, she gives it to us in digestible and easy to apply tips and suggestions and she is there for you for whenever you decide you'd like individualized care and support. It's not a common event at our podcast that we get to sit down and put our business shoes on, and yet, we constantly encounter listeners that are either thinking of starting a business, already have one, or are simply entrepreneurially curious and love to hear stories of how the vegan sausage gets made. I could think of no better person to scratch the itch of the vegan business and marketing talk than Sandra Nomoto, author of the fantastic book Vegan Marketing Success Stories, the first book to highlight the marketing tactics of vegan businesses around the world. If you have a business, or are thinking of starting one, her book is a must read, filled with inspirational stories of how brands and businesses have managed to do what they do and thrive. It's the book you have to read when you feel it can't be done, that you can't stand out as yet another vegan business, where you feel you're in an online sea of options for every niche imaginable, or for when you've started your business, and have no idea where to start with marketing or how to take your business from obscurity and into the proverbial main street where everyone that walks by can take a peak and come inside. In our conversation we talked about her journey through veganism and through business and marketing, about how she ended up an expert on vegan marketing specifically, and whether the strategies if you have a vegan business are similar or different to the marketing strategies for non-vegan businesses (a little spoiler, there is a lot of overlap, except for one key aspect many people forget about when planning their strategies). We get into all the nitty gritty of marketing through social media, and all those specific questions of which social media networks to be on, how often you should post, whether you can repurpose content, and whether you should focus on having a website and newsletter presence, or on posting on social channels. We also talk about marketing on a limited budget for small businesses, paid advertising and more. I loved talking to Sandra, and I know you'll find this episode filled with practical tips, and a great starting point for upping your marketing game from a business and PR pro. I hope you love this episode! For all the links mentioned in today's episode, click here or visit brownble.com/blog

In today's episode we're learning how to grown our own food, veganically, aka organic fruits and veggies that don't need a single animal product for fertilizing, all thanks the wonderful work of Meg Kelly, gardener and farmer extraordinaire, helping people and animals through her incredible work. Meg Kelly is an advocate for veganic gardening and farming. In 2008 she co-founded the Veganic Agriculture Network to promote organic food production that uses fully plant-based fertilizers, without any animal byproducts. She also teaches the Learn Veganic online gardening course to empower people to grow their own fruits and vegetables at home using sustainable vegan techniques. And Meg is organizing the upcoming Veganic Summit, a free 3-day online event about veganic gardening and farming happening from November 8th-10th, 2024.
An avid gardener, Meg has been growing food veganically for 15 years in backyards, on balconies, and in the countryside. In today's episode she teaches us how she found her way to being vegan and to gardening, how so much of the food that is grown uses animal by products that come from factory farms and how there is a homemade alternative that goes straight to the plant source. Plants feeding plants if you will. She teaches us how to compost, whether you have a big back yard or just a balcony. She gives us so many practical tips it was hard for me to look at her for 2 minutes straight as we talked because I was so busy taking notes. From what to grow as a beginner, to how to know what specific nutrients your plants are asking for, to how to find store-bought plant based fertilizers, how to grow food even in the smallest of balconies, how to save seeds and create your own heirlooms, how to know when to plant what and so much more. Through her content and coaching, Carly encourages individuals to embrace imperfection while exploring how individual action can make collective change for all. But aside from all her expertise and knowledge, Carly was a gem to talk to, so fun that I know without a doubt she will be a return guest so we can expand these topics even further. In this conversation we talk about how she found veganism in the first place, and navigating this change in a family where the bonding and time shared happened while hunting and fishing. How the patience others had with us, is an important reminder of why we need to have patience with our loved ones too. We talk about mindfulness, anxiety and depression, about navigating the harsh reality of what happens to animals, living in a non vegan world with non vegan friends and family, the big "should I date someone who isn't vegan" question, and finding our own way to advocacy. I had such a fun time with Carly and her enthusiasm is palpable, contagious and invigorating, and I can't wait for you to listen to her and get to know her in what I know will be just one chat of many. In today's instalment of our “Why Vegan” series, we'll be talking about another one of those big reasons why so many people are opting for more and more vegan meals and choices, and why so many have decided to go vegan. As I've been saying throughout the series, it doesn't matter if you've decided to make this change because of animals, or the environment, or your health, no matter what your personal reason why is, eating a vegan diet helps create wonderful changes in all of these areas, and the lives and rights of our fellow humans are no exception. As you know, my personal reason why was the way animals are treated in our current animal agriculture system. What I hadn't realized when I first went vegan, was that in all these industries that include so much mistreatment and cruelty to animals, there is also inherent violence present for our fellow humans who work in these facilities, in the communities surrounding places like slaughterhouses and factory farms, as well as many problematic issues for people who live in impoverished communities that have been affected by our high and growing consumption of animal products. In today's episode we talk all about these connections between the foods we eat and the rights of our fellow humans, and I'll share why this decision of switching to a vegan or plant-based diet can create such an impact in the lives of many, not only the non-human animals who we share this planet with, but our fellow humans as well. A little trigger warning before today's episode: Keep in mind that in today's episode we'll be talking about some difficult issues including violations of basic human rights, domestic violence, PTSD, poverty and food insecurity. If you feel this isn't the right time for you, know that the information will be here when you're ready. We're back with another podcast episode of our “Why Vegan” series, newly revamped and updated, exploring the reasons why making more vegan choices, and of course going vegan, can have such a positive impact in the world we live in. In this series on the benefits of eating a vegan diet we've covered the impact on our health, the environment and finally we've reached the reason I made this change over a decade ago, the animals. In our last installment we talked about meat, and how our food choices impact the animals raised for its production. In today's episode which is again all about the animals used for food, we'll talk about fish and other sea animals. It's such a common question, “why don't vegans eat fish, or prawns, shellfish or other seafood?”. Today I do my best to answer this question, specifically in regards to the animals. We have this image of fish living in freedom until they're caught, then going through a quick and less painful death than other animals killed for their meat. For other people, it's also hard to see fish as they do mammals, or even birds. Today we'll talk about fish, and I'll share the research and information that helped me make up my mind when I went vegan, when I also had these prior beliefs, deciding that I would finally leave fish and other sea animals out of my plate. As you know, we've started a brand new series in the podcast titled the “Why Vegan” Series, a newly revamped, re-recorded and updated version of our most beloved and downloaded series in the podcast. Through these episodes we're going to share those big reasons why more and more people are deciding to move towards a more plant-based way of eating and going vegan. We've discussed the effects on going vegan when it comes to our health, our environment, and now it's finally time to begin with what was my personal “why”. When I went vegan many years ago, it was learning about what happens to animals in our modern agriculture system and the meat, dairy and fishing industries that did it for me. Today I share a bit of what that journey was like, and I go deep into helping you understand what's wrong with our treatment of animals in these industries. In today's episode, part 1 on animals, we'll begin by talking about meat consumption, with fish, dairy and eggs to follow in the next few weeks. If you're not sure if hearing about what happens to animals is something you're ready for, I ask that you at least listen in to the first part of the episode. I'll explain why this was such an important part of my journey, and I'll also explain why I think that listening to these issues as a first approach can set you on your journey without it being as painful as watching graphic images, while definitely arming you with all the motivation needed to stick with this change. The next few episodes are very deep and personal to me, and I hope that you love them too. They're also a great resource to share with friends or family who ask you questions about the way you eat, as it's as kind and compassionate towards the listener as it is towards the animals. I finish the episode by talking about what happened to me when I saw these images and learned what I now know, and what made me make the connection that changed my life and my way of eating. In today's post and episode I'll be sharing some beginner tips, suggestions and practices that can be helpful when you're first getting started on this journey to eating more plants, to going vegan, to making as many plant-based choices and animal friendly choices as you can. It's important to remember that veganism, or the choice to go vegan extends well beyond the plate. If you've listened to our previous episodes you know that I always bring it back to the animals, because it was my own motivation for making this change, and so for me, going vegan encompassed so much more than just switching ingredients, it was about seeing all my consumer habits and a way of seeing all my actions through the filter of wanting to help animals in the best way I could. The food however, was and I believe still is the main focus point and sticking point for most people, since it's not only a part of our day, but also the place where our Venn diagram will collide most often with that of our loved ones. It's the activity most of us share most often with the people around us, and it's also where we have to make the most purchasing decisions. Although veganism isn't only about the food, when people I know in real life, or our students ask us for support, it's always in relation to the food and experiences with others where food is present. It's on tips around food and eating where I'll be focusing on today, as well as an important one on surrounding yourself with support, and one where we'll be fine tuning our reason why we're making this change and why it's crucial for success. When we talk about the basics regarding vegan diets and making the transition, it's important to talk about those first few days, weeks and months into going vegan. I know that I personally had so many questions regarding some of the physical symptoms I was experiencing when I went vegan, and this is completely understandable, as with any dietary change, we are bound to experience differences in the way we feel especially those first few weeks as a vegan. Today I'll be talking about the side effects we can experience when we first adopt a vegan diet. By side effects I'm simply referring to those physical symptoms we might experience as part of the transition to a plant based diet. Feelings in our bodies and minds that will soon find their perfect peaceful place of equilibrium once we understand what could be behind them and what we can adjust until we feel comfortable. Making more vegan choices or going vegan is also all about the formation of so many new habits, often a huge change from the way we've eaten before, or the way our family members or friends eat. This means it can come with challenges as we get acquainted, which is why the mindset we have while making this change is so important, and I'll share some thoughts in this regard as well, towards the end of episode.
