Charting is neutral. It's because we can each have different thoughts about it. It restores a certain amount of agency and empowerment so that you can choose how you want to take that next step in your life. Join me in this episode as we take a moment and think about how you can finish your charting at work. Finishing that charting at work involves achieving a level of charting mastery. Sleep deprivation is detrimental to physical health, mental health, and learning, but it's harder to notice. It can affect your creativity and thinking skills. The best way to know if you are not getting enough sleep is to look at a time when you should have peak awareness. If you feel like you are tired, yawning, or need a cup of coffee to function, that is a good indicator that you are not getting enough sleep. Becoming self-aware of what sleep deprivation looks likes for you can help you advocate and correct it. Everybody sleeps, and everyone needs sleep, and the more you are able to advocate for yourself, the more other people understand that they are not alone in their struggles. Join the conversation with Dr. Audrey Wells as we discuss the importance of sleep and how we can take control of our sleep to feel more awake and improve our mental wellness and productivity. If you have irregular sleep schedules because of work obligations, focus on light exposure to help you sleep and be awake when you want Even the dim light and the night-time settings you can engage on your screen are not significant when reducing the impact on sleep. The more we engage with screens, the less we sit down with our minds and are mindful of our thoughts. Physicians are the first ones who care for other people's health. However, they have difficulty taking care of themselves and their wellness. The medical profession is under immense pressure to perform more and more while sustaining the same level of quality, which can create a desire to place work above all as they care for patients and others around them. Yet, physicians need to prioritize their self-care, provide for themselves, and find time for rest. Join the conversation with Dr. Alicia Shelly as we discuss running from burnout to wellness with mindset and margin. She enjoys running, traveling, and spending time with family in her free time, and by making some changes in her charting, she has been able to create the margin to continue her outside pursuits as she trains for an Ironman triathlon. Most of us see burnout as a physical, emotional, and mental state that occurs when we feel depleted or overwhelmed, but it actually affects our brain. It has been shown that when we have chronic burnout, our hippocampus gets thinner, and the prefrontal cortex is affected, making it more difficult for us to focus, make good decisions, and remember information. This impacts our physical, emotional, and mental wellness, which makes us more likely to be stressed out by non-stressor situations, very reactive, easily upset, and more irritable. Eliminating burnout is key to optimal performance, and to achieve it, you need to make yourself a priority and re-evaluate what works for you and what doesn't. Practicing self-care, mindfulness, and looking out for yourself can help you feel better, make better decisions and perform better. Join the conversation with Dr. Puja Aggarwal as she shares more about mindset, meditation, and mindfulness, from a neurologist's perspective on burnout. Dr. Aggarwal is a certified burnout and stress management coach, and a board-certified Neurologist and Epileptologist. Dr. Aggarwal experienced burnout as a physician five years ago when she was overwhelmed, overworked and tired. Through coaching, she learned how to change her mindset and became more self-aware to realize her priorities and boundaries. She now runs Zenful Brain Coaching to help female professionals overcome burnout and lead empowered lives with fulfillment, fun, and freedom. Dr. Aggarwal uses a science-based approach to help her clients to optimize the use of their brains, and she has her own podcast, Zenful Brain, where she discusses ways to optimize our brain to live a more mindful and empowered life. There is no one perfect answer to what makes a great medical practice. Many different factors come into play when creating the ideal practice for yourself and your patients, but self-care is one of the key buzzwords that cannot be left out of the equation. Selfcare is not just about eating well and taking rest. There is more to it, especially when it comes to identifying what the ideal way of practicing medicine looks likes for you. n addition to prioritizing yourself, you have to advocate for what you believe in, be intentional about setting healthy boundaries between your practice and personal life, and learn to be more present in each of them. This will help you bring the highest value as a clinician and enjoy your personal life alongside your professional life. Join the conversation with Dr. Emeka Obidi as he shares how you can create an ideal medical practice atmosphere for you, your team, and your family. Dr. Obidi is a pediatrician, and he has been practicing for over 17 years in western Maryland. He is the founder and CEO of Partners Pediatrics and Family Health, a family medical practice where he leads a team of four medical providers caring for both pediatrics in adult patients. Dr. Obidi is also the CEO of Newborn Prep Academy, where he runs an online course called newborn preparation course that guides new, expectant, and recently delivered mothers on how to care for their newborn babies and what to expect so they can feel confident, empowered and ultimately enjoy their babies. Doing it all by yourself is holding yourself back from being efficient. To enhance your efficiency in your workflow, you need to think about what you can delegate, how to delegate, and why you want to delegate a task. Delegation is important, but also it calls for effective closed-loop communication with your team along with respect and kindness. Addressing someone by name and being kind when assigning a task is usually received in a much better way than just assuming that they should have seen your new order. Delegating is not easy, but it's worth it for you to grow. Join the conversation with your host Dr. Ryan Stegink as he shares more about how delegation in medicine can help you in improving your efficiency in your workflow and wellness. Closed-loop communication matters in patient care, reducing errors and helping teamwork with communication and workflow, particularly in situations where there is increased variability. It ensures that the message is properly received by exposing deficiencies that we may have in describing what we heard, which can reflect distraction, confusing terms, or different literacy levels. Using closed-loop communication will not only save you from making errors but also creates an opportunity to teach and empower your medical teams to know why they are doing certain things rather than just following protocols. Join the conversation with your host Dr. Ryan Stegink as he shares more about closed-looped communication, how you can make a difference in your patient care, and how you experience your critical workflows. Charting in the room can help you, as a physician, stay on track, improve patient care, take less work home, and make a difference in your workflow. It's possible, and you can make it happen by charting in the room, finishing notes in the room, and coming prepared to go from room to room, patient to patient. Leveraging electronic communications will indicate things have been done, empowering the staff to take care of some things more quickly. The principles of charting in the room work for all physicians, even those in procedural specialties or primary care. These principles, however, are part of continuous growth and improvement. An effective charting process is important for physicians because it helps them get more out of their work. Your input and those from other stakeholders need to be recorded in the notes. This makes easy documentation and charting efficiency crucial in creating a congruent, transparent, and flourishing system. There are so many things that you can do as a physician. Some you can implement yourself, and others are outside your control, but you can advocate for them. However, to create quick wins for you, your patients, and your critical team, focus more on what you can change. Join the conversation with your host Dr. Ryan Stegink as he shares more on medical charting, why, where, and some of the things we need to change to improve efficiency in clinical workflows and, ultimately, wellness for medical teams.
