Bradley Bostic, CEO of hc1, uses advanced data science, AI, and natural language processing to identify optimal patient testing, better predict disease development, and provide insights that can help prevent disease progression. The use of lab data is crucial for making diagnostic decisions, yet the potential of leveraging data is not being realized. Using technology to address issues like over-utilization of testing and data silos that prevent clinicians from seeing the complete story, hc1 is building a diagnostic insight network that unifies the provider and pharmacists to improve the patient journey and improve outcomes. Bradley explains, "We are transforming laboratories into strategic assets that improve patient care and boost the bottom line for healthcare systems. And really, the way that I came about this was having been in the healthcare industry for quite a while, most of my career, I started seeing this common fact that data was important. The largest component of the data that was used to make diagnostic decisions and diagnose patients was lab data. It's like 80% of all diagnostic decisions at least are informed by lab data. Yet, of everybody I saw out there looking to leverage data, there wasn't anybody that I saw who was hyper-specialized in how you can leverage signals from lab data to make patients healthier. I decided there was a void in the market and that we could be the best in the world. So that's what we've been working on here at hc1." "What we've been able to do is use these advanced data science capabilities, use artificial intelligence, use natural language understanding to not only be able to identify the optimal testing for patients at any given time to get to the best diagnosis faster. But also to become predictive - to identify those people in that constellation of signals who, for example, are trending toward developing chronic kidney disease or those people who are trending toward developing diabetes or any number of different disease states. We have created an artificial intelligence model that can identify individuals who are highly predisposed to developing cognitive decline well into the future without any sort of a specialized test, but just using routine test values all analyzed in this constellation." #hc1 #HealthTechLeaders #LabData #HealthTech #HealthcareAI #HealthAI #FutureOfHealthcare #HealthcareTech #LabDiagnostics #HealthcareAnalytics hc1.com Download the transcript here

Caleb Manscill, President of Vyne Medical, has a mission to present a holistic view of data, from origination to use, within a healthcare organization. The goal is to guide them to find ways to streamline the workflow, save time, reduce errors and costs, and improve patient outcomes. Using AI to handle faxes, data entry, and other administrative tasks can free up staff to handle issues that require human intervention. Vyne Medical provides insights about implementing technology and overcoming cultural resistance to changes in healthcare organizations. Caleb explains, "We've got multiple use cases, but I'll speak to two. The first one is the simple handling of faxes. There's lots of unstructured data coming into different points of care. In this case, I'll talk about the hospital, but there are lots of referrals being made. There are lab reports being sent and there's data that needs to be appended through HIM. Often, this data will come in through the fax machine as unstructured data, and individuals will pick up this paper. And we're talking, again, going back to the paper and picking it up and keying it in. There's the risk, not to mention miskeying it or accuracy. Still, that process is potentially taking place anywhere. If it's a simple patient order, it could take a few minutes. If it's an extensive lab report, it could take upwards of 20 minutes. The automation or AI utilized within our product suite and platform can take that down to 30 seconds or even just a few seconds, depending on the workflow that needs to be initiated." "That's why we exist in that very specific use case of fax management. The way that our solution works is it streamlines the whole process so that there isn't any paper handling. So it's almost as if it's being sent electronically, through the internet, or however you want it to be. What's most important to us is that if they're not going to change their behavior, at least we can meet them where they are and streamline it as if they had adopted the most up-to-date APIs or ways of sending those data." #VyneMedical #Workflow #Hospitals #Automation #HospitalWorkflow vynemedical.com Listen to the podcast here

Dr. Craig Joseph, Chief Medical Officer at Nordic Global, highlights the concerns and challenges healthcare professionals face when using health IT and the clinician burnout related to the administrative burdens of electronic health records. He addresses the obstacles to integrating IT into healthcare workflows, including cost, risk aversion, and resource limitations. He identifies areas where AI can have an immediate impact in reducing errors and biases. Craig elaborates, "In the past, we lived in a paper-based world, so it was pretty flexible. You could fill out a form or not fill out a form. You could give as much detail or as little detail. Often, especially physicians really couldn't read what they were writing anyway, so it was less important. All of that's changed now in the last 15 or 20 years since the advent of electronic health records." "What we've seen with large language models, like Chat GPT and other modern AIs, is the ability to do a lot of things with voice now, to be able to communicate directly with a patient, not have to look at the screen to either get information or to write a progress note. Lots of physicians have complained deservedly that they have to spend pajama time, time after they put their kids to bed at night, where they're not getting paid and writing their progress notes and office visit notes." "I think AI, like LLMs are going to really do a lot to help to rehumanize the interactions that we have. Although, there will be downsides. For that to work, there has to be a microphone in the exam room and it has to be listening to what you and the doctor are saying to one another. Folks are going to have to be comfortable with that to be able to leverage some of those things." #NordicGlobal #AI #MedicalAI #Hospitals #HealthIT nordicglobal.com Download the transcript here

OVERVIEW: Obesity is a disease. It's not just a lifestyle issue. Jason A. Duprat, MBA, CRNA, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Boss Academy podcast, sits down with Katherine Saunders, Co-Founder of Intellihealth, Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and Host of the Weight Matters Podcast. Join us in this episode as we debunk the long-standing stigma surrounding obesity and learn more about Katherine and Intellihealth's mission to bring accessible medical obesity care for all. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Katherine's mentor had a predecessor company which she and her husband transitioned into Intellihealth, wherein they aim to democratize effective obesity treatment. Serving as a Primary Care physician, Katherine was overwhelmed with her patients' weight-related diseases which inspired her to pursue Obesity Medicine. Physiological and pathophysiological changes occur with excess weight that make it very difficult to lose weight and easy to gain weight. Obesity Medicine is a newer field of medicine. There are only under 6,000 physicians who are certified in Obesity Medicine, which is astoundingly low considering how rampant obesity is in America. The cornerstone of the field is dietary strategies, physical activity, and behavioral change. Medications come in only after comprehensive evaluations and needs assessments. Katherine mentions the American Board of Obesity Medicine, Obesity Medicine Associate, and conferences available to learn more about the field. She works closely with Software Developers in Intellihealth, combining two vastly different fields to make Obesity Medicine more accessible for all. One of their goals is to break the stigma, to educate people that obesity is a disease and not dependent on willpower alone. TWEETABLE QUOTES “Obesity is a disease. This episode is sponsored by Charm Economics– data-driven solutions for digital health & MedTech businesses. Dr. Block and his guest, Dr. Ken Milne, delve into the concept of knowledge translation and the time it takes for new information to be integrated into clinical practice. They reference a famous paper that found it takes an average of 17 years for clinically relevant information to reach the patient's bedside. However, the hosts believe that this time frame can be shortened with the help of social media and evidence-based medicine. They emphasize the importance of evidence-based medicine but also note that it should not be the only factor in decision-making. The hosts also discuss their checklist for evaluating the validity of studies and how they use their podcast to share new information with their audience. Overall, the hosts believe that shortening the time it takes for new information to be integrated into clinical practice can lead to improved patient outcomes. The episode also touches on the potential benefits of vitamin C in treating sepsis patients. One study conducted at Dr. Paul Merrick's Institution showed a significant mortality benefit in patients who were given a cocktail of thiamine, Vitamin C, and hydrocortisone. However, the study was not a randomized control trial and was before-and-after observational, leading to skepticism about the conclusions. Over the next few years, properly designed randomized control trials were conducted and found that vitamin C had no significant impact on sepsis patients. Therefore, while there was initial interest in the potential benefits of vitamin C in treating sepsis, further research has shown that it is not an effective treatment. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an increasingly prevalent, chronic, T2 inflammatory disease triggered by food and/or environmental allergens. Due to underlying tissue inflammation, patients suffer diminished quality of life due to symptoms such as weight loss, difficulty swallowing, and heartburn. Patients can experience these symptoms for a long time before receiving a proper diagnosis. Once diagnosed, treatment options have historically been limited. Fortunately, therapies that treat other type 2 disorders are in development or are approved to treat EoE. At a recent live event, experts used patient cases to discuss the diagnosis, underlying causes, and the newest treatments for EoE, including biologic therapies. Watch this on-demand version now! Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: Distinguish signs and symptoms of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) among children and adults to enable an earlier diagnosis and minimize complications due to uncontrolled disease; Recognize underlying mechanisms of EoE, including the role of key cytokines such as interleukins -4, -13, and -5 as drivers of type 2 inflammation and how this relates to emerging treatment; and Apply the latest expert recommendations and clinical evidence to the treatment of patients with EoE, particularly as novel and emerging agents become available.

One of my greatest frustration with practicing medicine is poor patient compliance. You spend time educating the patient and discussing the treatment plan. When you see them back in follow up you discover they haven't followed through. If you are lucky, they are the same. Unfortunately, sometimes they are worse.Using FDA-approved devices, remote monitoring remote patient monitoring (RPM) and remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) patients can alert physicians to any concerning data between visits. That way, physicians can intervene before things spiral out of control. The goal behind remote monitoring programs is to improve patient care, decrease healthcare spending by being proactive and improving patient compliance. And while I'm sure that we are all for improved patient care and outcomes, I know that nobody wants to do more work. Or do it for free. Here's the good news: Implementing RPM/RTM does not require more physician time. When set up correctly, you only have to write the order. You can use your staff to do the rest. RPM/RTM can significantly increase your revenue. In this episode I'll tell you the key differences between RPM and RTM and how to utilize them in your practice. If you'd like to hear more tips on how to start, run and grow your practice and related medical businesses, please sign up for my newsletter at https://www.thepracticebuildingmd.com.
