Dr. Erkeda DeRouen talks to Dr. Janice Brown, a physiatrist who is certified in acupuncture and functional medicine. They talk about the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, functional medicine, and Dr. Brown's own way of practicing medicine.  [01:08] Introducing Dr. Janice Brown [03:43] Why Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation? [09:16] Functional Medicine [13:42] Practice Your Own Style of Medicine   Becoming a PM&R Physician Dr. Brown always regarded herself as a healer, but not necessarily a doctor. After college, she spent 6 years exploring multiple paths before deciding to pursue medicine. She chose to become a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physician because she is passionate about addressing the root cause of health problems, not just in managing symptoms. As a physiatrist, she can examine both the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to see what's causing pain or illness.   Functional Medicine  Unsurprisingly, Dr. Brown is certified in functional medicine, a field which focuses on why patients are unwell. Physicians look at the different factors such as sleep, diet, exercise, hygiene, stressors, relationships, and personal history. Dr. Brown also practices acupuncture which helps patients relieve pain and anxiety.   Practice Medicine in Your Own Way Regardless of what you've learned, you can always shape your own practice of medicine. Observe other doctors and emulate the traits and behaviors that resonate with you. Treat patients in the way that feels most comfortable and efficient for you.  But never forget that you are not just a doctor. It's easy to lose sight of your other identities when your identity as a physician takes precdence. To stay grounded in who you are, make sure to devote time to your personal hobbies and interests when you can.   You can reach Dr. Janice Brown through her website or send her an email at janice@betterhealthlifecoaching.com.  To learn more about how MedSchoolCoach can help you along your medical school journey, visit us at Prospective Doctor. Hi, good evening, everyone. This is the last podcast of the Beyond This World podcast. This is your doctor Janice Brown. The Beyond the Disability podcast was my passion project. For almost two years now. I published every other week. I looked for persons with disabilities who were doing amazing things. I was honored that they allowed me to tell their stories and get a glimpse into their lives. I was even more honored when my guests from the 4th episode became my first return guest on the 45th episode the ones who sparked the idea to create the podcast. And I am so proud of how far along she has come. What I have learned is that life happens. Any one of us can have an accident or an acute illness that robs us. Of some of our physical and psychological functions. What many of my guests taught me is that there is a choice to allow disabilities define to define them; or to move beyond their disability. In the world of physical medicine and rehabilitation. I have seen many people who choose to allow a disability to define them. I'm not here to judge. But I know it removes from them the power to heal. I hope these podcasts will help them see beyond their disability. And open their eyes to the possibility. I will continue to work with persons with disabilities in my practice. Advocating for them whenever I can. I will continue to offer non-surgical and non-opioid pain management to those who seek it. But more importantly, I now will place my energy on educating people. That chronic diseases are not the norm. And empowering them to take control of their health and well-being. We can no longer leave it up to the medical establishment to guarantee a quality of life. That is completely up to us. So many people are afraid to manage their chronic diseases. I'm not sure why, as a result, is a life that is more pleasurable and fulfilling. We are humans and death is inevitable. Your quality of life is a choice. I want to thank all my guests for their time. And again, for being vulnerable and being and telling their stories. All episodes of the podcast will be available to listen to. I welcome. All who are interested in my work reach out and connect with me via my website, betterhealthlifecoaching.com. You can contact me there as well as book a free consultation with me to see if I can help you achieve better health. Finally, share the podcast with someone you know who is struggling with their disability and could be uplifted by any of the stories told. As always, I am here to serve. And will continue to do so until the inevitable happens.

Sometimes we need to wait till the time is right...   Born and raised on the tiny island of St. Croix, Janice grew up with a love for nature. Her parents instilled in her the importance of whole foods and regular exercise.   She carried this with her through medical school, her residency in PM&R (the one specialty that still believes in examining patients through touch), and her training in Life Coaching, Acupuncture and Functional Medicine.   She finds creativity by combining her knowledge in these areas to formulate individualized wellness plans for people who are serious about optimizing their lives. In an age marked by racial division and political polarization, what visions and ideals can Americans share? When our national history is for many a source of shame rather than pride, how can Americans find a way forward to prosper and thrive—together? And when many thinkers and activists emphasize historical grievance and victimization, who can offer a more positive perspective without ignoring the injustices of the past? AEI's Academic Programs hosted a recent panel conversation on the 1776 Unites movement, a non-partisan and intellectually diverse alliance of thinkers, writers, and activists offering important answers to these questions by tackling some of America's biggest educational, cultural, and economic challenges. We were joined by AEI's Ian Rowe, the University of California, Berkeley's Janice Brown, Glenn Loury of Brown University, and Wilfred Reilly of Kentucky State University. In today's Episode, Janice Brown tells her own story. I knew from an early age I wanted to be a doctor. My path to medical school was the road less traveled have taken 6 years off between undergraduate and medical school. Growing up on the island of St. Croix, I had access to fresh air, outside activities, organic food, and unlimited imagination. One day when I was a teenager, my mom became bedridden from back pain. I instinctively thought to massage her back. The results were immediate, she was able to get out of bed. My experiences as a child followed me to adulthood. After I earned an undergraduate degree in Spanish at Columbia University, I pursued Massage Therapy at the former Swedish Institute in New York City. My fluency in Spanish led to my first job out of college as a Research Assistant at Columbia University Medical Center. All the while, I practiced massage therapy, learning various tools that would later serve me. In 2004, I started medical school at New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. I remained true to myself and applied for residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). It was the one specialty that allowed me to see patients get better and back on their feet.
