TIME KEEPS ON SLIPPING(SLIPPING, SLIPPING...INTO THE FUTURE)Back from the hectic holiday season, this week Sandy and Elisabeth discuss starting your New Year off right by acknowledging exactly how much time you don't have and what to do with the time that we do have.WHAT SHOULD WE DO WITH OUR TIME?EPHESIANS 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. MATTHEW 22: 37-40 And he (Jesus) said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”These verses are valid, full answers to the questions of what we’re supposed to do with our time. HOW MUCH TIME DO WE HAVE?So how much “productive” time do you have in a day? Obviously, your personal results will vary, but for working adults that go to a 9-5 , they’re only productive for around 3 hours.HOW DO WE DECIDE WHAT TO DO?EPHESIANS 5:15-17 Therefore, be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Paul is admonishing us to be WISE with the time we have, and to KNOW what the will of the Lord is.So when you commit to something, ask yourself, is this wise? Is this what God would have me commit to right now?Pray about it. When you look at your schedule, make a cup of coffee, sit with God, and go “What do you need me to Cut. Where should I let go? Where should I help more? Where should I build blanks into my schedule, so I can be available?”Practical advice: How To Make a To Do ListCONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE: LIVING A GRATEFUL LIFEThis week Sandy and Elisabeth discuss the Biblical principles of the 30 Days of Thankfulness trend, how it effects us physically and how we can accomplish not just 30 days but a lifestyle of gratitude.WHY SHOULD WE BE GRATEFULNUMBERS 14:1-2 That night all the people in the camp began crying loudly. All the Israelites complained [grumbled] against Moses and Aaron.Being ungrateful brought punishment for the Israelites. Severe punishment. In the form of wandering in the wilderness until all those that had complained had died.1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is GOD’S WILL for you in Christ Jesus.Grateful people are the ones that God chooses to accomplish His will.1 PETER 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.God wants us to live a life without anxiety.HOW DO WE DO ITPHILIPPIANS 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. THANKFULNESS JOURNALHow do you do it?Every day write down 3 good things that happened that day. They don't have to be earth shattering but they do need to be specific. The longer you continue the more benefits you seeBenefits:Increased happinessImproves self-esteemBetter sleepDecreased stress levelsMINDFULNESSHow do you do it?Do one thing at a timeDo it slowly and deliberatelyDo lessPut Space in Between ThingsSpend 5 Minutes Doing NothingStop Worrying About the FutureWhen You're Talking to Someone Be PresentEat Slowly and Savor Your FoodLive Slowly and Savor Your LifeMake Cleaning and Cooking Become MeditationKeep PracticingSO WHAT'S THE POINTCOLOSSIANS 3:16-17 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. If we want to live like Jesus we must be grateful. Jesus thanked God in prayer several times in Scripture, including at the Last Supper when He knew the hardest times were coming.2 CORINTHIANS 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.Being thankful is a big part of how we point people to Christ.CONCLUSIONIn order to speak life and truth and hope into the next generation we need to look undeniably different. We need to look and think and act like the hands and feet of Jesus on this earth and they way to get there is through gratefulness. GENESIS 16:13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.In the wilderness, God saw Hagar, and asked where she had come from, where she was going, and told her of Ishmael. He then told her to go back.GENESIS 21:17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.GOD SEES NINEVEHJONAH 3:10 God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways. These people were the worst of the worst. They worshipped false gods, they performed child sacrifices there were none that were righteous. God had already decided to destroy the city. They had 10 days left on Earth from the time Jonah entered the city. And yet God saw them. CONCLUSIONThousands of years after Hagar called God “The One Who Sees Me”, God’s Son (an equal part of the Godhead) would come to Earth to die for the sins of the world. Christ would not only see the people that society did not - the crippled (John 5, Matthew 12), the woman who was unclean or in sin (Mark 5, Matthew 26, John 8), and the poor - he would heal them and show those around them that they had value by treating these outcasts with respect. If we are to be a people of God, we must see those around us that are difficult to look at. We must minister to and love those who have been abused by God’s people, even when they’ve run away from the camp rather than endure more mistreatment.Being the Church as Christ called us to be requires humility and an attempt at reconciliation when we have done harm, and that begins by seeing and acknowledging those who are hurting. Looking directly at those that are harmed, particularly if we’re partly responsible for that hurt, is not easy or natural, but the impact of this on ourselves and on those who feel unseen cannot be overstated.Because we serve The God Who SeesCONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.CONCLUSIONMATTHEW 10:29-31 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Yes the entire chapters. We won't be adding any specific quotes in these notes because taking brief statements from Paul's letters have led to massively out of context dress standards and unBiblical ideas on modesty, clothing and wealth. Instead we go into an in depth explanation of the purpose, context and instruction that Paul gives us. Spoiler alert: It's NOT a checklist!!There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance. If you have lost a child they are in the arms of an angel.MATTHEW 18:10-11 See that you don't think these little children are worth nothing. For I tell you that they have angels in Heaven who are always in the presence of my Father in Heaven. The Son of Man came to save that which was lost.If you don't have any experience with this type of loss be joyful because you have hope, be patient when trouble comes and pray at all times.ROMANS 12:10-13; 15 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality... Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.If you aren't sure how to respond, the answer is always love. Not just in word but in action. Remember the broken hearted. Don't let the fear of saying the wrong thing keep you from saying anything. Your silence speaks so much louder.1 JOHN 3:18- My children we should love people not only with words and talk but by our actions and true caring. This is the way we know that we belong to the way of truth. This is what God commands: that we believe in His son, Jesus Christ, and that we love each other, just as He commanded. The people who keep God's commands abide in God, and God abides in them. We know that God lives in us because of the Spirit God gave us.CONCLUSION:If you are mourning this Sunday, you are not alone. Modesty Pt2: Who Told You That You Were NakedThis week Sandy and Elisabeth have a discussion on modesty, church dress standards and lust. MARK 7:20-23 And Jesus said, “The things that come out of people are the things that make them unclean. All these evil things begin inside people, in the mind: evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, greed, evil actions, lying, doing sinful things [indecency; lust; lewdness], jealousy, speaking evil of others, pride, and foolish living. All these evil things come from inside and make people unclean.”These verses are Jesus' response to the Pharisees when they tried to use their checklists to trap the disciples. This is something we see all over Scripture where the Pharisees look at someones actions but Jesus looks at their heart.GENESIS 3:9-11 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked?God didn't tell Adam and Eve they were naked. God didn't tell them to be ashamed. Every time the church tells a woman she is naked we are echoing the words of satan in the garden. PHILIPPIANS 2:5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.Whether you are male or female, in everything you say and do, in every action and reaction your attitude should be that of Jesus. If the attitude of our heart is in the right place it really just doesn't matter what you are wearing.CONCLUSION:If you believe that Christ dying on the cross covered our sins, once and for all, and you cannot add to that work, then we must get rid of the checklists, and we MUST be patient with people as the Holy Spirit leads them to places that may different than He is leading us.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? They have 2 children together, he has two adult children and he has two children in Heaven. He is a self-described "Christian mutt" as he was born into the Lutheran church, baptized in a Baptist church and attended Charismatic and Pentecostal churches with his family along with attending Catholic school for most of his education before settling into non-denominational churches in adulthood. In his professional life he is a manager in Information Technology, in his internet life he is the host of the Shooter's Nation Podcast and in his personal life he is a perpetual student of leadership, safety and self-defense.John is Elisabeth's husband of 8 years. They have 1 child together. He was raised primarily in the Baptist church. He felt abandoned by the church after his father passed away at a young age and spent a few years away from it before God called him back to the church. In his professional life he is in Information Technology, in his internet and personal life he is a self professed D&D nerd.DISCUSSION TOPICThis discussion was initiated because of a pastor who tweeted the following: "Your seasonal reminder, 'Women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel with modesty and self-control.' 1 Timothy 2:9. Leggings are underwear not outerwear, wear them properly." This was follow up to his tweet: "Leggings aren't pants. Wear pants. Leave the leggings at home." basically admonishing women for wearing leggings and yoga pants in public because he deems them immodest. He also defended his tweets saying that he was a shepherd shepherding his sheep.MODESTY, PURITY AND LUST OH MYWhen asked what they thought about these words here were the responses:Modesty: BehaviorPurity: ThoughtsLust: DwellingModesty has more to do with the behavior of the person wearing the clothes then it does with the clothes the person is wearing. Purity has more to do with a persons thoughts and motives. Lust is the act of dwelling and fixating on impure thoughts and is a sin.Modesty does not equal pure thought. Immodesty does not equal impure thoughts. The burden of purity falls to the person doing the thinking. You are in control of your actions and your thoughts and what a person does or doesn't wear is completely irrelevant to how you handle yourself.Placing the burden of controlling mens lust on the clothing of women is just an excuse to sin.Blaming someone else for your thoughts or actions is weak.TRAIN THEM UPWhat should we teach our sons? You are capable of controlling your thoughts and keeping yourself from dwelling on and living in those thoughts. You always have a choice to remove yourself from a situation. You may have to sacrifice something to do it but you always have a choice. Follow Christ's example and subject your thoughts to the same control that you would subject your body. What should we teach our daughters? Expect respect and not settle for anything less than that. Don't allow yourself to be treated as an object of someone's sexual fantasies. Don't settle for a guy that treats you like a possession and hides you away from the rest of the world but expects you to be the object of his sexual desires behind closed doors.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? 025 The Green New Deal – How Christians Should Care for the Environment

The Green New Deal – How Christians Should Care for the EnvironmentThis week Sandy and Elisabeth discuss the now defunct Green New Deal, it's importance to National politics, to the next generation and to God. And they dive deep into what it looks like to interact with the Earth in a Biblical way.GENESIS 1:26; 28 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image and after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over everything that creeps over the Earth"....and God blessed them and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the Earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the Earth."God tells us twice within three verses to have dominion. This repetition commands attention and emphasizes the importance. Aaron Armstrong from the Gospel Project put it very well: As God's image bearers in Creation, we were intended to act as His representatives. We were designed, in a very real way, to show the world what God is like. So when God gave us the command to rule over the earth, the expectation was to do so in a way that reflected His character. We were created to care for God's creation and we were commanded to do so. But if we refuse, and we do the opposite, will we kill the planet? The short answer is No. The long answer is that God designed all of His creation with a perfect balance. If we push that relationship out of balance then God's creation will no longer supply what we need to survive and the people will be scattered. We can see many examples of this in the Bible itself. From natural disasters such as the Great Flood to the direct hand of God in the Tower of Babel. And we can see more recent examples in the fall of the Mayan empire and the subsequent reclaiming of the land by nature. The point: As Christians, we know how the story ends. We aren't going to surprise God by ending things before His plan is ready to be executed. He is infinitely patient and His timing is perfect. He will not be rushed. He will not be scrambling. But if we do not follow His commands, we will be waiting, we will suffer and we will be scattered. Just ask the Israelites.2 PETER 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years is as one day.So why does the Green New Deal matter to Christians? The short answer is because people matter to Christians. And while the Green New Deal is extreme and misguided in some areas and completely unattainable in others, the heart of the document is trying to save people in the only way the world knows how.As Christians, we should care about the earth because it was our first commission. And there are some really easy ways that we can help our environment that will make very little impact to our daily lives.Check out the full episode for lots of fun and easy ways that you can follow God's command to care for the earth and be a witness to those around us by honoring God's creation. PROVERBS 31:8-9 Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.PSALM 140:12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and will execute justice for the needy. CONTENTMENT - BECAUSE YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANTThis week Sandy and Elisabeth talk about contentment, including the difference between the Biblical definition and the modern American definition, the difference between our needs and wants, and choosing contentment in good times and in bad.LESSONS FROM PAULPHILIPPIANS 4:11-13 Not that I am speaking of being in need for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I now know how to be brought low and how to abound. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.Paul is writing this from prison. He has by all standards every reason to be discontented and yet the message he sends back to the church is not to tell them how good they have it but to remind them that in all circumstances we must find contentment through Jesus.LESSONS FROM SOLOMONECCLESIASTES 5:19-20 God gives some people the ability to enjoy the wealth and possessions He gives them, as well as the ability to accept their state in life and enjoy their work. The do not worry about how short life is because God keeps them busy with what they love to do, the little pleasures are distractions from the meaningless worldSolomon uses Ecclesiastes chapter 5 to warn us that money does not buy happiness but more importantly he goes on to tell us that the ability to enjoy life and be content is a blessing from God. The little things are the most important things and give meaning to a meaningless world. Pay attention to the little things. Choosing contentment will lead to a joyful life.LESSONS FROM JESUSLUKE 12:25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his life. Here again we find another example of Jesus giving us a bit of science. It's almost as if He knew how our bodies were supposed to work.If you find yourself constantly having a negative attitude and feeling anxious every single day start a thankfulness journal. Every day write down 3 good things that happened that day. It doesn't have to be life changing or profound just 3 things that were positive in your day. Your brain will begin to look for these good things and focus on them and slowly your whole perspective will shift and you will find yourself seeing things in a different light. A positive light.CONCLUSIONEPHESIANS 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.Since we have eternal hope in Jesus we can be content with our circumstances in the here and now and we can do all things through Him because He created us to do good things and prepared those things for us so that we could walk through life according to His plan.So find the good you were created for and know that He will give you the strength to do it.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? Adulting and Jesus - Because We're All Just Winging ItIn this weeks episode Sandy and Elisabeth talk about their favorite tips to surviving life in general. Food prep, time management a little of everything in this listener requested episode.INTROLife is like a buffet. Not everything on the table is for you. Use discernment to choose what is beneficial to your life and what will just add more stress and make life feel even more overwhelming.FOOD PREP:Cook your meat. Ground beef, grilled chicken, taco meat, BBQ, whatever it is if you open your freezer and you see a week's worth of already cook meat to throw together a dinner you get back at least 30 minutes of your day in prep time and the busiest part of the day becomes more relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.Use Pinterest for good. There's tons of great recipes for quick dinners, crock pots and insta pots if you can stay away from the home decor, crafts and birthday party ideas long enough.Cook extra. Plan for leftovers. Sometimes heating it up in the oven instead of the microwave is all it takes to get your family excited about that leftover casserole.Preheat/Pre-chill coffee mugs, travel cups and kids thermos containers to increase the amount of time your food and drink will be at proper temperatures.Check your recipe before you start. That Pinterest meal will be a big Pinterest fail if you don't have baking soda so check the list and check your pantry before you set yourself up for disappointment or failure.TIME MANAGEMENT:If mornings are stressful for you pick out clothes and shoes the night before and have everything laid out and ready to go. No arguing over what to wear, no missing shoes, no trying to find two matching socks that are clean slowing down your morning.Leave the shoes at the door. If they get past the front door who knows where they'll end up. Get a basket or box and leave the shoes in one spot.If getting dressed is not a big deal in the mornings then think about what the biggest stressors of your morning are and spend 5 or 10 minutes getting those things ready. Set up the coffee pot, fill sippy cups and snack cups, get your grocery list written down, check the traffic patterns and the map for best directions.GETTING THERE:If there's one thing I learned in my 10 years of commuting in Nashville traffic it's that the fast lane is not any faster it's just the place where people want to drive the fastest. Drive steady and go with the flow. Playing lane change leap frog is not only slowing you down it's making everyone less safe.Love the zipper. Especially if you're in the South can we please exchange "manners" for following the rules of the road. You don't need to merge at the sign that says road work 10 miles ahead and you don't need to let 7 people over in traffic. Go to the merge point alternate every other car with the lane that's merging. Everyone will get there faster if you learn to zipper.Know how a 4 way stop works. If a stoplight is out it becomes a 4 way stop. It's not a game of chicken.CLEANING TIPS:Norwex cloths work better than anything for stainless steel without any cleaners or polishes needed.Silicone scrapers aren't just for dishes. They work on wood and tile floors or just about any solid surface that kids or dogs leave remnants. If you even get stuck with a vinyl floor that seems ruined. Grab some vinyl siding cleaner from Lowes and go to town on those floors. You'll be shocked how well it works and makes a nasty floor like new (or at least tolerable until you get to replace it.Fragrance free cleaning options: Seventh Generation, Biokleen, Charlie's Soap and MethodThe most important part about keeping a clean home is habits and pacing yourself. Some times you're house is just not gonna be your biggest priority and that's okay. Take care of people first and then stuff. If you're feeling overwhelmed and depressed about the state of the chaos try and get one thing accomplished from start to finish each day. If you can complete one task, clean one area, tidy up one room you will feel encouraged and successful.BUDGET:Online grocery shopping keeps you from impulse buying and makes price comparisons much easier.Budget realistically. Look at your actually expenses. Cut back where you need to, plan for what you really spend and be honest with yourself.Talk it over with your spouse. Not for permission but so that you can both be responsible for your financial well being.Dave Ramsey isn't for everyone. Find a budget style that works for your life and your family.LIFE IS SHORT:Don't participate in mommy wars. You don't know everyones personal, financial, emotional and medical needs. These decisions are as individual as the people making them. Just because something is the right choice for your family doesn't mean that it's the best choice for every family.Read more. Read for yourself. Not just self help but also for entertainment. Read to your kids. It may be the most impactful (and easy) thing you can do for their developing brain.Communicate what you need. To your spouse (and yes that includes sexual needs), to your kids, to yourself.Make big changes in small steps. Taking longer to reach a goal is 100% better than giving up after a week because you set unrealistic goals for yourself.Be patient. With yourself, with your kids, with your spouse.CONCLUSION:Growing up is hard and it's something we never finish doing. And for Christians, in this life, we will never stop striving to be more Christ like.ZECHARIAH 4:10 Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.HEBREWS 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that has been set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? THE TRUTH IN LOVEThis week Sandy and Elisabeth dig deeper into the topic of speaking the truth in love.GOD IS LOVE1 JOHN 4:16b God is love. Those who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. This is a concept that Christians are pretty comfortable with but how often do we really think about what that means in the context of speaking the truth.God is love. He is the originator of love, and it is an enduring attribute of His nature.LOVE IS A COMMANDMENTMARK 12:29-31 The Lord our God is the only one Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all you mind and all your strength. The second command is this: Love you neighbor as you love yourself. There are no commands greater than these. So when we say it's important to love. It's REALLY REALLY important.LOVE COMES FROM GOD1 JOHN 4:7 Love is from God; and everyone who loves others is born of God and knows God through personal experience. We were created in His image; in the image of love. Do not forget that even those who are not believers were still created by God and they too love because He first loved them. The ultimate common ground between Christians and non-Christians is love. It is the one thing that connects all of creation.SPEAK IN LOVE1 CORINTHIANS 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trust, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.CONCLUSIONBefore you speak, and specifically before you speak the truth in "love". Use 1 Corinthians as a scale to weigh your words and your intention.Always choose love. Love never fails.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? CONVERSATIONS FOR CHRIST - SPEAKING THE TRUTH OF ABORTION IN LOVEPRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, COMMON ABORTION ARGUMENTS AND RESPONSES:Argument: It's just a fetus.Response: Fetus is latin for offspring or little one. It literally means baby.Argument: It's just a clump of cells.Response: We are all just clumps of cells what we are arguing about is the point of dependency that it should be okay to terminate a human life.Argument: Well if you don't like it just don't have one.Response: I believe that the unborn are unique human beings so what kind of person would I be if I didn't speak out against their mass murder. It's no different to me than sitting silently while someone caused you harm and justify it by your perceived worth.Argument: But all GOP'ers are pro-war and pro-death penalty.Response: I don't know anyone who is "pro-war". Appropriate punishments for convicted criminals and appropriate treatment for innocent victims is a completely different conversation. I am anti-murder at any stage in human life. I would be happy to discuss my views on the death penalty another time but for the sake of this argument lets just say that I agree death by lethal injection is cruel and inhumane and should be outlawed.Argument: Well if you don't like abortion why don't you adopt every child, pay for every expense and give ALL the free things to babies.Response: Because I believe that women are intelligent enough to know that choices have consequences and not rut like bitches in heat. We live in a time when women are more educated, more in control of their own lives and bodies as they ever have been. But I also understand that life happens and I personally support pregnancy crisis centers, local food pantries and domestic abuse shelters and have no problem with the government giving someone limited welfare to help them get back on their feet.SIDE RANT FOR THE CHURCH:Christians sometimes to a TERRIBLE job with young mothers in their own midst. When their own children make a mistake and get pregnant they compassion not punishment ya'll. And if you are a Christian you are called to help the poor, the orphans, the widows and those who are sick and disabled so if you have a few buck left over every month you should be supporting pregnancy crisis centers and local charities whether you think they "deserve" it or not. Because if the church had done a better job over the years assisting people who are hurting and in need in their own communities we wouldn't need (at least some if not all) public welfare programs.WHEN TO STOP ARGUING:Some people you literally can't argue with. They will not trust any source that isn't Planned Parenthood or a liberal site whose statistics are skewed in favor of abortion.Do not lose your ability to witness to a non-believer because you disagree on a sin. You cannot be surprised when sinners live like sinners. There will be times when people are not ready to listen to the Word but that is not a reason to walk away from them and it is not a reason to push them to the point that they will no longer listen to anything you say. That is the time to step back and love them the way Jesus loves them and pray that there will be another chance for you to speak the truth and their hearts would be ready to receive it next time. Some people take years to come to Christ. CS Lewis was an example being raised in a Christian home but not coming to Christ until he was 33.CONCLUSION:1 PETER 3: 15 ALWAYS BEING PREPARED TO MAKE A DEFENSE TO ANYONE WHO ASKS YOU FOR A REASON FOR THE HOPE THAT IS IN YOU; YET DO IT WITH GENTLENESS AND RESPECT.Even if we sin differently we are not better. We are equals. We are equal in our fallen nature, we are equal in our need for Jesus and we are equal at the foot of the cross. You can't punch people in the face for Jesus and expect immediate repentance, conversion and reformation. Instead, let us treat each other with the immeasurable value they have within the eyes of Jesus Christ.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? NON-RELIGIOUS ARGUMENTS AGAINST ABORTION - USING HISTORY, SCIENCE, AND SOCIOLOGY TO DEBATE NON-BELIEVERS...part 2WHY DO WE KEEP TALKING ABOUT MARGARET SANGER?It's really important to know, understand and not deny historical context. You can't just take an idea or movement founded by evil, wait a few decades, and say it's suddenly not evil because you supposedly have better intentions. Every villain is the hero of their own story.PLANNED PARENTHOOD GOES ON THE OFFENSIVEA ruling in favor of planned parenthood in PP vs Casey in 1992 had the unintended side effect of the courts acknowledging the age of viability was significantly earlier than it was at the time of Roe vs Wade, allowing states to put restrictions on abortions earlier in the pregnancy. The results were that small independent clinics and physicians who performed abortions were run out of business by the new restrictions. So planned parenthood seized the opportunity and created surgical abortion mega-centers. The Walmart of abortion providers. The results? By 2011 they performed 2.5 times more abortions than they did in 1990 even though the overall abortion rate dropped from 1.6 million to 1.1 million and their market share increased from 8% to 33% with a revenue increase from 400 million to 1.3 BILLION.PLANNED PARENTHOOD CREATES THEIR OWN CLIENTSMore than half of women who have abortions give contraceptive failure as the reason for the pregnancy. Contraceptives that Planned Parenthood passes out with very little information beyond use this and you won't get pregnant. The frequency of contraceptive failure is not discussed and in both camps (Planned Parenthood and the Church) they are not giving comprehensive sex education. So Planned Parenthood is shouting the virtues of "safe sex" knowing good and well that if they encourage sexual activity they will gain new customers.PLANNED PARENTHOOD TARGETS POOR URBAN AREAS AND MINORITIESDespite Planned Parenthoods increase in access to "women's healthcare" and birth control in 2011 at the peak of their new business plan the unintended pregnancy rate for black women was 79 in 1000, the highest of any race or ethnicity, compared to 33 in 1000 for white women. From 1990-2008 the abortion rate for black women increased by 9% and for hispanic women by 7.6% while during the same period the rates for white women DROPPED by just over 11%.Blacks and Hispanics make up less than 30% of the population but they account for 55% of all abortions. You cannot ignore this disparity! These statistics are the exact same numbers you see when you compare the percentage of people incarcerated in our prison system. Just over 30% of the population in the country accounts for over 50% of the population in our prisons. We are (much too slowly) acknowledging that this is a result of predatory lawmaking, sentencing discrepancies and lack of other options for rehabilitation and support for the minority community. We have to see that the same exact thing is happening to women of color at the hands of Planned Parenthood. They are not "meeting a need" they are creating it by aggressively pursuing their target and then profiting from their desperation.SIDE TOPIC: SEX ED - TEACH IT!The only method of sex ed that has proven to delay the age of the first sexual experience AND increase the use of condoms/contraceptive AND be less likely to choose an age-discrepant partner is COMPREHENSIVE sex education including abstinence AND condoms/contraceptives.PLANNED PARENTHOOD ATTACKS OTHER AT RISK PEOPLE GROUPSGender and disability are widely used around the world as justification for abortion.Down syndrome is probably the highest on the list because we now have easy access to screening tests. Countries like Iceland, Denmark and Western Australia boast that they have "eradicated" Trisomy 21 from their populations when in actuality very few cases are inherited while the vast majority are spontaneous so there is no eradicating a genetic mutation there is only eradicating people with a genetic mutation.Margaret Sanger had the same vision for the world as Adolf Hitler she was just much more effective in achieving it.PLANNED PARENTHOOD SKEWS STATISTICS TO JUSTIFY THEIR WORKIn order to keep them from looking like they are targeting minority communities they published their own results about the number of clinics in urban areas using zip codes instead of mileage radius to make it appear that many of their clinics are not in minority communities when really they are within walking distance. They also use every occurrence of patient contact as a "service provided" and rank them equally to skew the percentage of their business that comes from abortions. For example, a woman receives a physical exam, a pregnancy test, a PAP smear, an ultrasound, an abortion and birth control and she has received 6 services. Only one sixth of her service was abortion.More information about Planned Parenthoods skewed statistics can be found here and here on the Test Everything blog by Rev Matthew Newsome.CONCLUSION:Child sacrifice is an ancient and hungry evil that existed long before Planned Parenthood. We must acknowledge that our sisters in Christ are being attacked, pursued and lured by this evil.We must fight for them as well as their children. We must be the pro-life generation.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? Non-Religious Arguments Against Abortion - Using History, Science, and Sociology to Debate Non-Believers...part 1Tonight Sandy and Elisabeth step away from the Scripture to discuss the evidence and defend the pro life position against abortion to help you strengthen and refine your argument when debating people who are not believers.KNOW YOUR BELIEFSTo someone who is not Christian, or of any other faith for that matter, "because the Bible says" is not a strong enough reason to combat thousands of years of lies to women and to families. You must know WHY you believe what you believe in order to defend why you believe it. And you must also know what the opposite side believes and be able to empathize with them as human beings before you will be able to speak to their hearts on such passionate issues as abortion.BE SINCERE AND EMPATHETICYou can start empathizing by not calling women who have had an abortion a murderer. That is not speaking in love and it will do nothing to change minds and save babies.Kimberly Ross from Redstate: Ben Shapiro says we shouldn't prosecute women who have had abortions and he's right.I am...someone who desires and strives to speak the truth while not forsaking compassion and most of all, a listening ear. Love is truly louder. The beauty of the gospel is that not only are we created equally in the image of God, but we are also equal at the cross. And because of that we can, and should, have compassion and empathy towards other sinners, even if their sin is very different from our own.RECOGNIZE THE HISTORYThis lie is not new. It is an ancient and powerful lie. Infanticide is not new it is just wrapped up in a shiny new package called women's healthcare. And sadly it will very likely exist in another form even if we are successful in creating legislation to protect life in our generation. There is new information that ancient cultures may have practiced infanticide simply to control the size of their families (Yewden Villa archaeology discovery)ACKNOWLEDGE THE SCIENCEYes the "S" word that so many Christians fear. Science is on our side! We have so much more evidence now to establish that babies in the womb are very much alive, can process their environment and feel pain than we did when Roe V Wade was decided. And while we can't force the courts to hear the case again in light of these advancements we can certainly make sure our friends and family are aware.HIGHLIGHT THE VIOLENCEAbortion is a violent procedure. There is no way around that. It is invasive and it ends a life. There are many people who care nothing for the word of God but will passionately demand that no violence against women should be tolerated. We have common ground with these people and we need to bring light to that and agree that violence against women should not be tolerated in any form.EXPOSE THE PREDATORSDid you know that North Carolina was still performing forced sterilization procedures as a way to control welfare spending until 1977.Abortion and eugenics proponents, including but not limited to, Margaret Sanger used programs just like this one to try and exterminate those with mental illness, low IQ, physical handicaps, low income and brown skin from the gene pool. They worked with the Ku Klux Klan, politicians and community socialites such as the heir to the Proctor and Gamble fortune (you know the company who owns Pampers).Organized charity itself is the symptom of a malignant social disease. -M SangerJoin us next week as the discussion continues and we move into the modern leadership, growth and mission of Planned Parenthood.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? Welcome to 2019!Sandy and Elisabeth are back for 2019. The first episode of the year is a discussion of how the modern tradition of New Year's Resolutions stacks up against Scripture.DO NOT DESPISE HUMBLE BEGINNINGSZECHARIAH 4:10 The people should not think that small beginnings are unimportant.Zerubbabel was instructed by God to rebuild Solomon's temple but the project sat uncompleted for 17 YEARS. That is a long time to complete a "mission from God". But an angel came to him to give assurance and let him know that he should not discouraged because of this unimpressive start because the temple he builds will be even greater than Solomon's.LET GO OF THE PASTPHILLIPIANS 3: Brothers and sisters, I know that I have not yet reached that goal but there is one thing I always do. Forgetting the past and straining towards what is ahead.Paul says that he counts the past as lost. Because we don't need to dwell on our failures anymore than we need to rest on our successes. Our mission is not complete until we are in our final home with Jesus. So do not let the accomplishments of today keep you from achieving even greater things tomorrow. And do not let the failures of today keep you from trying to succeed tomorrow.DO GOODEPHESIANS 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.We were created to do good. Not so that we could be prideful of our accomplishments or so that we could somehow save ourselves from condemnation but so that we could bring glory to our Father and so that others may see and know that He is God.CONCLUSIONGod's grace, the forgiveness offered through Christ, is not a result of your works - your failures OR your successes. You WERE created to do good and God prepared this beforehand. We want to encourage you to acknowledge the progress you've made, the progress you make this year and praise God for and in every small step.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? When Mothers Grieve - What Not to Say...to Anyone...Ever.Have you ever said the wrong thing? Don't worry we all have. This week Sandy and Elisabeth talk about the "wrong" things that were said to them in times of loss and look to Scripture for a better understanding of how to bring comfort to others in times of heartache.WHY TALK ABOUT IT NOW?Because it's gonna come up. Bad things happen to everyone and a little preparation now will allow you to console others in times of grief.1 in 4 women will have trouble getting pregnant, carrying a healthy baby to term or deal with a loss either through miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. This episode is framed around things that Sandy and Elisabeth heard throughout their journey to motherhood but they really apply to anyone who is struggling with loss of any kind.#1 "It's all part of God's plan"It's completely untrue and it hurts everyone, especially non-believers. I have personally seen people walk away from God and from their faith because they cannot fathom a God who would plan for our loved ones to suffer. This commonly used phrase is not only devastating for those grieving it is literally pushing people away from God.JEREMIAH 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future#2: "You're young, you can always have another one."This is just absurd and it is said ALL the time!! Having another child will not replace the one that is lost. A family who has lost a child will never again be complete this side of Heaven. It does not matter how many other children they have there will be an emptiness there that will never be filled. There is also no guarantee that is a possibility. See our opening statement about 1 in 4.MATTHEW 18:14 In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these children perish.#3: "God doesn't give you more than you can handle."This is standard Christian response to anyone going through a rough time but it is also completely false.God does not give you more than HE can handle! But there may absolutely be times that you are given more than you can handle alone.Your Scripture reference here is literally any story about the Israelites in the desert. They wouldn't have lasted a week. Seriously.#4: NothingThe right answer is NOT to say nothing, EVER!! Sure it's easy for you. But it is not what God calls his people to do. We are to reach out to the hurting and the suffering and the mourning.CONCLUSION:There are NO magic words. Nothing you say will suddenly take away the pain of losing a child. But you can make a difference with your words. Make it a positive one.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? Reaching Out: What All Christians Need to Know About SuicideROMANS 8:38-39 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.To believe that the act of suicide in and of itself condemns one to hell would require belief in one of two things: that in order for a person to be able to end their own life they were never a believer in Christ or that suicide is the one sin no covered by the blood of Christ. We don't believe either of those things. Join us as we discuss suicide inside the church, outside the church and in the Bible and how Christians should respond.PSALM 34:18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.Statistics About Suicide:10th overall cause of death2nd cause of death in ages 15-343rd cause of death in ages 10-14Women are twice as likely to attempt suicideMen are 4 times as likely to be successfulMiddle aged men account for 7 out of 10 suicidesAutism, Asperger's syndrome and chronic pain patients are all at higher riskLGBTQ rates are three times higher than national averages123 suicides every dayFor every 1 successful suicide 25 more people attempt it every dayAround 3000 suicide attempts per day or 1 million per yearROMANS 6:23 For the wages for sin is death, but God gives us the free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Bible doesn't promise we will no longer have struggles or pain or sorrow after we become Christians. Even after we accept the gift of our salvation we are still sinners and we still deserve death. It is a very physical problem and the only cure is for our physical death to occur so that we can be resurrected through the blood of Jesus Christ. We will be perfect in our new life. It doesn't happen in this one.SCIENCE OF DEPRESSION:There is no real quick version of the Science with Sandy rant here but very basically if you think that a physician and/or medications should be involved with the treatment of hypertension or obesity then you believe that a physician and possibly medications should be involved in the treatment of mental illness. Trust us, you do.THE CHURCH IS NOT IMMUNE TO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES:Why would it be? Even people in the Bible struggled with depression.PSALM 69:3 I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. -DavidRUTH 1:13 ...my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the Lord's hand has turned against me. -RuthJEREMIAH 20:14 Cursed be the day on which I was born! The day when my mother bore me, let it not be blessed. -Jeremiah (The weeping prophet. Wrote Lamentations.)There were also multiple documented suicides in the Bible. Including multiple Kings of Israel. Kings who were chosen by God to lead the people, Judas, Bathsheba's grandfather (King David's Bathsheba) and Samson.WHAT DO WE DO?SELF-CARE: Make sure you are getting the care you need (See episodes 005, 006 and 007)BE THERE: Physically if possibleLISTEN: It's very important for people to feel heardBE SERIOUS: Don't dismiss or try to "fix" it, just take their feelings seriouslyREACH OUT: Ask them if there is anything you can physically do for them. Create a safety plan.FOLLOW UP: Depression is cyclical. Check back with them, especially if you see them pulling back from activities, family or social media.PRAY: Focus on other people. THIS IS HALLOWEENTHIS IS HALLOWEENHALLOWEEN!HALLOWEEN!THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEENCeltic festival of Samhain, co-opted by the Catholic church as part of All Saints Day and All Souls Day celebrated as All Hallow's Eve.Trick-or-Treat started as an Irish tradition of going door to door collecting materials for a village feast and bonfire. (Sounds like a good ol' fashioned Southern Baptist pot luck to me.)Cover the whole thing with a coat of American Capitalism = HalloweenIn fact, Halloween and Christmas have remarkable similarities. Both were Christian substitutes for pagan festivals so that the Christians could participate in the celebration without worshipping false gods. (Basically a loophole.)Fun fact: The Puritans thought both holidays (All Saints Day and Christmas) were tainted and didn't celebrate them. They also allowed breast feeding in public. (Out of the three things I'm not sure why the modern church chose only to celebrate Christmas.)SO WHY DOES IT MATTER IF YOU LET YOUR KIDS CELEBRATE?1 CORINTHIANS 8:6-8 There is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. Food will not commend us to God.Paul tells us that it is okay to eat the meat that was sacrificed to false gods because we know that meat was sacrificed in vein. All things come from God. We come from God. All things come through Jesus Christ. We exist because of Jesus Christ. So don't waste food sacrificed to no one. Enjoy the food that God has provided for you.EPHESIANS 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. If you are going to forbid your children from doing something please make it a reason they can't disprove with a 10 second Google search.Halloween is NOT satan's birthday. I just had to say that.1 CORINTHIANS 8:9 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.Using arbitrary "Christian looking" rules to restrict or force your children to do anything is weakening their faith. If they cannot trust you to tell them the truth about something as trivial as Halloween how can they trust you to tell them the truth on the real important issues of our faith.CONCLUSION:The Bible has SO many important messages for us to teach our kids, but it says right there in black in white go ahead and eat the candy. God made it anyway.Don't make it harder on your kids to understand the important concepts of the Scripture by weighing them down with rules and restrictions that are not backed up by the Word of God.And don't worship by the devil by not worshipping the devil. It doesn't happen accidentally. The act of worship is an intentional act.So don't worship Satan and enjoy stealing your kids Halloween candy.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? 008 Church for the Whole Family: Biblical Requirements, Realistic Expectations, and Practical Tips

CHURCH FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: BIBLICAL REQUIREMENTS, REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS, AND PRACTICAL TIPSSince both Sandy and Elisabeth have found themselves in a place where they had to change churches recently this week they sit down and discuss what exactly the Bible tells us to look for in a church, what they look for in a church and what to do when you just can't go to church.HEBREWS 10:25 Do not forsake the assembly as some are doing, but you should encourage each other, and even more so as you see the day of the Lord, when Christ will return.CHURCH SHOULD PREACH THE TRUTH OF THE WORD OF GODEZEKIEL 34:7 So you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord God says.If your preacher does not talk about Jesus it is not where you need to be. The Bible doesn't rhyme and all the main points don't start with the same letter so let's go a little deeper than that folks.IT'S OKAY TO LIKE YOUR PASTORPeople flocked to Jesus. He was likable. He was loving. He spoke in a way the people could understand. You have to get something from the message for it to impact your mission and if you can't focus on what the pastor is saying then find someone you connect with better.CHURCH SHOULD SUPPORT YOU TEACHING YOUR CHILDRENPROVERBS 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.You train the child. Not the other way around. The church should be there to support you raising your children to walk in faith. They aren't there to do that for you and they shouldn't try.TRUST YOUR GUTThis should go without saying but we're saying it. Churches are full of strangers. Stay alert and keep your family safe.JESUS MAKES HOUSE CALLSMATTHEW 8:15 Jesus touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she stood up and began to serve Jesus. If you are in a place in life where the burden of church festivities is too much to bear, invite Jesus to come to you. He does not need a special building to speak to a broken heart, to heal the sick and comfort the hurting. Take the time to let Jesus touch your heart and then you will be ready to get up and begin to serve.CONCLUSIONWe are all created uniquely and will have different needs from our church leadership. Don't settle for anything less than what you need because it's difficult to go somewhere new. Church is not a checkbox it is a refueling station. Find the place that you can connect to and that will help you fill your cup to overflowing so that you can pour into those around you.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? Jesus Ate. Like, a lot: Wrapping Up A Month of Living Like Jesus. In this episode Sandy and Elisabeth talk more about living like Jesus and specifically how much He ate. Spoiler alert: It was a lot.Jesus AteJOHN 12:1-2 Jesus, therefore, six days before the passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with him.We know that Jesus ate a lot because it is talked about in the Bible a lot. It is not in there by accident. It's pretty clear that Jesus balanced marathon teaching and healing sessions with weekends away with close friends eating, drinking and relaxing. It's not in the Bible by accident. We are supposed to pay attention to it.Jesus Fed OthersJOHN 21:4 Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast.Jesus only spent so much time with the disciples after His resurrection. His message and His instruction in these appearances is vital to the mission of the first church and all of us that came after.Jesus Went To DinnerMARK 2:15 And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples. Jesus ate with sinners, and tax collectors, which apparently was even worse. He wasn't afraid to spend time with the people who needed Him the most.Jesus Is FoodLUKE 22:19 This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.Just as bread is vital to our physical life Jesus is vital to our spiritual life. Jesus not only commanded us to eat but He commanded us to think of Him every time we did. And I'm pretty sure He wanted us to think about that a lot.ConclusionLook to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith and do what He did.Now go have a snack and do something good.CONNECT WITH US AFTER THE SHOW:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? But he would withdraw to desolate places to pray.MARK 1:35-37 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.Mark 1:45 Jesus could not enter a town if people saw Him publicly. He stayed in secluded places where no one lived but people kept coming to Him from everywhere.HE SPENT TIME IN NATURE:MATTHEW 15:29 Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And He went up on the mountain and sat down there.MARK 2:23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and His disciples walked along.Science corner:Roger Ulrich published a study in Science magazine in 1984 that showed patients who could see leafy trees healed a full day faster, needed significantly less pain medication and had fewer post-surgical complications than patients who saw a brick wall instead.Nature has been proven to show improve mood, reduce stress, improve cognitive function and even increase activity in the prefrontal cortex which regulates emotions, makes decisions, controls impulses and forms memories.HE ATE:JOHN 21:9 When they stepped onto the shore they saw a fire of hot coals. There were fish on the fire, and there was bread...Jesus said to them come and have breakfast and He took the bread and the fish and gave it to then.Jesus ate. A lot. It's mentioned many times. It's the basis of multiple miracles both by God before Jesus and as part of His ministry while He was on Earth. Most importantly He uses food to represent His ultimate sacrifice and commands us to "Do This In Remembrance of Me" The "Do This" is literally Eat and Drink.HE WASN'T MANIPULATED:MATTHEW 16:23 Get behind Me Satan! You are not thinking about the things of God, but only about human concerns.HIS NO MEANT NO:MATTHEW 5:37 Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil.Don't be evil. Say no.HE DIDN'T TRY TO DO EVERYTHING:MATTHEW 6:24 No one can serve two masters.CONCLUSION:Jesus' focus was on serving His Heavenly Father.Do not let others' needs distract you from your purpose. The Problem with Proverbs 31…Part 3New Testament Examples:Mary (Sister of Martha) (Luke 10: 38-42): She chose Jesus and recognized it is more important than all the other distractions of lifeAnna (Luke 2:36-38): She announced the coming of the Savior - A prophetess in the temple where Mary and Joseph brought Jesus. She was chosen to announce the arrival of the Savior and she told everyone who came to Jerusalem about Him.The Damsel and the Maid (Mark 14:66-72): They were important to Jesus - Peter’s denial of Christ, which was prophesied by Jesus himself. The first 2 denials were to women (probably young unmarried women whose word would not have even been accepted as testimony in a court of law)Pontius Pilate’s wife (Matthew 27:15-25): Her husband listened to her - She suffered in dreams because of Jesus’ innocence and told her husband not to have anything to do with him. This is when Pilate washes his hands of Jesus’ sentencing.Women at the empty tomb (John 20:1-18): They believed - First to see the Resurrected Jesus; first to touch him; first to hear his voice. Again women whose word meant nothing by the law of the time were chosen to be the first witness to the Resurrected Christ.Rhoda (Acts 12:12-16): She was the first to recognize Paul when God released him from prison. Even years after Jesus’ ascension to Heaven women were still the first witness to miraculous events. (This time the men didn’t believe her and they left Paul knocking at the gate while she tried to convince them it was really him).Lois and Eunice-Timothy’s mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5-7): They were the Spiritual leaders of their home - Paul mentions the women by name and that Timothy’s faith started in them. Even though his father and grandfather were GreekThe care of widows (Acts 6:1-6): Women being mistreated and overlooked is the impetus for appointing the first deacons. This mistreatment of women in the church proved serious enough to warrant the ordination of seven men to prevent it—including Stephen. The letters of Paul (Romans 16:1-16; Colossians 4:15; 2 Timothy 4:19; 1 Corinthians 16:10): Of Paul’s four greetings that include specific names, a woman’s name is listed first in three of them. Conclusion: The Proverbs 31 Housewife is just one example of the many ways that God calls women to serve in His Kingdom. We are all different with unique gifts, abilities and callings. Are some of us given the same abilities and resources as the Proverbs 31 wife? Yes. Does that make the gifts and abilities given to any of the rest of us less important? NO!!We are mothers and daughters and sisters, yes, but we are more than that. We are children of God, redeemed by Christ, and God sees us as an individual, not a partner, a caregiver or a “helpmeet”, but as a child of His. We are an important part of God’s ministry, of His message and of His plan. And His plan for us does not begin or end with marriage or motherhood. It starts in the beginning and continues until our last breath.Connect with us after the show:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? (Spoiler alert – the WHOLE Bible) Old Testament ladies:Eve (Genesis Chapter 3): Chosen to bear life – she was the mother of all life but also responsible for the fall (Very interesting that God chose her to bring forth life knowing that she would break his command and that woman would be required for the saving of man later)Ruth (Ruth Chapter 3): The Hebrew phrase that’s translated “excellent wife” (NASB), “wife of noble character” (NIV), or “virtuous woman” (KJV) in Proverbs 31:10 occurs just one other time in Scripture outside of the book of Proverbs. It’s used to describe Ruth who was a widow with no children and no money and no business and no fancy meals or clothes; She was bold: She also essentially proposed to Boaz coming to him at the night and telling him he needed to follow the law and marry her.Miriam (Exodus 2:1-8): She was brave - she watched Moses in the river; approached the Pharaoh’s daughter; brought her own mother to nurse the babyDaughters of Zelophehad (Numbers 27:1-11): The were important to God - received their fathers inheritance of land in the Promised Land; Moses brought their cause before the LordDeborah (Judges Chapter 4): She was a leader - Judge and prophetess She instructed the men to go to war with the Canaanites, she went with them into battle, but warned that if she went then the war would be won by a woman, specifically Jael (with a tent spike to the head)Rebekah (Genesis Chapter 24): She faithfully followed Gods will - she was chosen for Isaac’s wife after pouring water for a strangers camels; she was given the choice to leave immediately or wait the traditional amount of time and she chose to go in faithEsther (Esther Chapter 4-7): She sacrificed everything - she was an orphan raised by her uncle, she was given to be a concubine of the King and when chosen by the King for his wife she risked her life twice by telling him she was Jewish and asking him to spare her peopleConnect with us after the show:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? The Problem with Proverbs 31…Part 1What is it?Proverbs as a whole is advice for a happy and prosperous life, but its intended audience is men.“Woman of valor” Advice from a mother to a son on what to look for in a wife (Possibly from King Solomon’s own mother)The 10th-31st verses are known as “The woman of valor”. It is advice from a mother to a son on what to look for in a wife.It was likely written by Solomon himself and could be advice given to him by his mother BathshebaIt was recited in Jewish households by the husband as a praise for his wife What it has become today? It has been elevated above all other scripture as the only example of a worthy wife. What’s so wrong with that?It is advice not a to do listIt is unattainable – we are not perfect (and we need sleep)It is a conceptual woman not a real personLimited view of the Bible – Old Testament teaching only (Acts 15:10 tells us that no one is strong enough to carry the load of the old ways)It limits women’s ministry and influence by dismissing any other spiritual gifts not exhibited by this woman She had servants. Do ya’ll have servants? Cause we don’t.Connect with us after the show:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode? Episode 0000: In the BeginningWelcome to Y’all Need Coffee… and Jesus.About the Hosts:Elisabeth was raised in the church, has been married for 8 years and has been with her husband for 10 years. They have one child and will likely only be able to have one without divine intervention. She suffers from PCOS, endometriosis and migraines. She worked for 6 years in a hospital dealing with insurance and patient billing until she had her daughter. She worked for the first year writing from home and is now a full time stay at home mom. She also loves to sew and bake but mostly she just enjoys hanging out with her kid.Sandy was also raised in the church and is a Christian. She has been married for 10 years and has been with her husband for 3 months longer than that. She has two children (one of whom is still an infant and will make some cameos on our recordings because he is a night owl). She has two stepchildren. She lost her first child in infancy and she has suffered three pregnancy losses. She has been a working mother both full time and part time, briefly a stay at home mother and is currently working from home part time. She has been a Registered Nurse for 14 years, previously certified in orthopedics and currently certified in dermatology. She has also been through divorce and is marred to someone who has been divorced. Sandy and Elisabeth are cousins by marriage and became friends through the magic of the interwebz. They have never met in person but are looking forward to doing so hopefully soon. They are both very passionate about their faith, their families and about our country. Why does the world need another Christian women’s podcast? We both looked around in a sea of Christian women/Christian mommy podcasts and despite the fact that so many of them claim to be “real” a lot of them seemed really really saccharine. We are not lifestyle bloggers, empty nesters or theologians. We do not have our ducks perfectly in a row. We are women that have struggled both physically with our bodies and in our marriages, and spiritually with our faith to get where we are now, and sometimes we still struggle and that’s okay.We want you to know that if you are struggling that’s okay. You are still important. You are unique. You are intelligent. You are strong. You are an individual child of God and you have a purpose in His Kingdom whether or not you have everything in order from day to day you are important to his work.We both have a heart to encourage women because we have both been in places before where we felt that we absolutely didn’t belong.Elisabeth is the mom in all black wearing a t-shirt that says I love Jesus but I cuss a little to a mommy group meet up full of cardigans and headbands. Sandy is the mom who was constantly asked when are you going to have kids even though she was quietly dealing with the painful loss of her firstborn child followed by two pregnancy lossesWe have both been through periods of rebellion, depression and exclusion and we have a faith that is hard won and steadfast to share with you.We want you to know that you have a place with God and you do have a place in fellowship and you do have a place within His body. God has plans for you and He has equipped you, whoever you are, whether you are a single woman, a mom, an empty nester, a woman who is married without kids, a widow or a student to do great things for God and for His Kingdom. We want you to know that, with help from God, you are equipped to minister to others and that it is not necessary for you to completely burn yourself out in the process of doing that.We hope to be an encouragement to those who have found themselves looking in the windows of the church and feeling like you don’t belong and maybe even share some tools to use if you are in the middle of those struggles to try and get reconnected with the church and more importantly with God.We believe that if you are a believer in Christ that the Holy Spirit is with you wherever you go and we want to talk about the real stuff we deal with when we walk out the door of the church. Sometimes light-hearted and sometimes more serious, but always brought to you through prayer and Scripture. We know that people are multi-faceted and sometimes their journeys are hard and we want you to know that we've been there and that you’re not alone and that God hasn’t left you in those moments. We also want to talk about things that are important to you. If you have questions that you feel are too personal to talk to your real life friends about or something you’re not comfortable bringing up with your pastors wife they wanna know about it. And while we are not scholars we are wives and mothers and women who have been through a lot and we are not afraid to go there… with Scripture… and not a PG rating.Connect with us after the show:Questions, Show ideas, Want to be a Guest or Sponsor an episode?
