Long time friend of the show, Rebecca Parker, joins us from New York for Episode 26 of Tales from the Fandom. We first start off talking about the accessibility of fandoms and how it has changed over the years since the internet has taken shape.  From Prodigy and AOL to Livejournal and Myspace to Twitter, Facebook and more. While Rebecca has hundreds of fandoms she's into, we decided to split up our discussion to two main 'verses. This part covers what is known as the Abramsverse.  All things JJ Abrams. Rebecca runs us through the main Abramsverse shows - Felicity, Alias and Lost before we take a detour and talk about Fandom and how the interaction between fans and creators/actors of movies/TV shows has changed to being extremely toxic at times. We then jump back on the Abramsverse train and finish up with Fringe and the new Star Trek movies.  When this episode was recorded, Star Trek Beyond had just come out, so you'll hear us talk about it, even though now it's out on DVD. Part 2 will cover the Whedonverse.  All things Joss Whedon.

Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

Star Trek INTO DARKNESS. In this episode of Standard Orbit, your Refit Crew continues their voyage through the Original Series “Kelvin Era” Movies with Star Trek INTO DARKNESS; the much anticipated sequel to Star Trek 2009. For the past few months, the Refit Crew has been discussing at length, the Original Series Era movies while navigating towards their final destination of BEYOND at temporal coordinates 07.22.16. After nearly 4 years of the critical and financial success of the 2009 Reboot, INTO DARKNESS roared back onto the big screen. Even though it was the highest ever grossing Star Trek movie, earning over $467 million dollars worldwide, many “Trekkies” believed that this movie was the furthest from Gene Roddenberry’s original vision. The themes of this movie were of a darker tone, challenging not only veteran Trekkies, but a modern audience as well as INTO DARKNESS presented a future that was quite different from The Original Series source material. INTO DARKNESS definitely ushered in a new era of Star Trek cinematic storytelling. And then there was the "wrath" of Khan...or was it the "wrath" of the fans? To The Journey: A Star Trek Voyager Podcast

Voyager in the JJ-Verse. Star Trek loves playing with timelines. We have seen every incarnation of the franchise play with possibilities outside of what we consider "our" timeline, from Edith Keeler in the 1930s to Captain Janeway on in the 29th century. Aside from the "prime" universe and the Mirror Universe, we now have the Abramsverse. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan envision what Voyager and her crew would be like in the timeline created in the JJ Abrams-produced films. They discuss the likelihood of a Vulcan on the ship, a CGI alien as a regular cast member, the aesthetics of key areas of the ship, and much more. And yes, lens flares are still a thing in the 24th century. Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast

Alternate Realities vs. Alternate Timelines.   In this episode of Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling have a followup discussion on the distinction between an "alternate reality" and an "alternate timeline" in response to a challenge by Norman Lao and Jeffrey Harlan on their recent episode of Standard Orbit (Standard Orbit 115: "Wibby Wobbly Primey Wimey").  Mike and Zachary provide a philosophical analysis of different senses of the terms "alternate reality" and "alternate timeline," while also exploring and contrasting key examples of these senses in Star Trek. Examples covered in this episode of Meta Treks include the prime timeline vs. the Abramsverse timeline, the episodes "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "Parallels" from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the Mirror Universe as seen in The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, and Enterprise. The Visitor. One of Deep Space Nine's most loved episodes is an enigma in and of itself. Focusing on just one main character, played by someone other than the normal actor, “The Visitor” highlights the power of DS9's concept to tell character-driven stories that transcend the usual Star Trek formula. This tale of Jake Sisko's life after losing his father in a freak accident tugs at the heartstrings for so many viewers—and the intensity of this effect depends on your own life experiences. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Will Nguyen, Phillip Gilfus, and Jeremy Reed to discuss the unusual concept, the performances of Tony Todd and Rachel Robinson, the father-son relationship between Benjamin and Jake Sisko, how Star Trek uses the future time frame, and much more. Developing the Transporter. Even those who have never watched Star Trek know about “beaming” from place to place. A fictional technology originally created to deal with the reality of television budgets, the transporter has become known to pretty much everyone; and for Star Trek fans it’s part of everyday life. But in the 22nd century, transporters were used only for cargo. The idea of beaming humans around was a frightening one, and it took some time for the crew of the NX-01 to warm up to the idea. Literary Treks: A Star Trek Books and Comics Podcast

The More Things Change. Spock's encounter with V'ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture had a profound impact on the Vulcan and his interactions with those around him. We didn't get to see this effect on screen, but Scott Pearson's new eNovella The More Things Change gives us a glimpse of Spock's life six months after TMP. With an ailing Audrid Dax in need of medical treatment from Trill doctors, Spock and Doctor Christine Chapel must transport the mysterious alien commissioner to a rendezvous with a Trill medical ship. The journey is not an easy one, however, and an alien attack puts the relationship between Spock and Chapel to the test, while at the same time forcing Christine to violate another culture's rules and uncover a shocking truth about the Trill—they are a joined species. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones are joined by Dan Gunther of Trek Lit Reviews to discuss The More Things Change, whether the eNovella format gives Pearson enough room to explore his concept, why Dax is in the story, and whether the real purpose is to explore Spock and Chapel or merely Chapel herself. In our news segment we take a look at the Star Trek Pop-ups book and review the first issue of The Q Gambit, IDW's crossover of Q and the Abramsverse.

Star Trek: The Compendium to combine both J.J. films plus bonus features When Paramount released Star Trek Into Darkness on home video, the fanfare that the studio had hoped for was replaced by outrage. For those who enjoy bonus features—one of the key reasons to buy Blu-rays—there was no way to get all of the content that was produced. By splitting up the bonus content amongst various retail outlets, Paramount angered fans and shot themselves in the foot. Finally our voices have been heard and a new collection coming in September will bring both Abramsverse films and all existing special features into one box. A rebate offer is even in the works. IDW takes you to Deep Space 9… Abramsverse Style Fans of Q will interested in what IDW has in store for us starting in July... of maybe not, depending on how you feel about the Abramsverse. Issue #35 of the Star Trek Ongoing series begins a six-part series titled "The Q Gambit." The series, which begins in July, finds the mischievous Q sending James T. We've speculated on Literary Treks that "a very familiar space station" referred to DS9, and the cover art just revealed for Issue #36 confirms this. How do you feel about an Abramsverse DS9? Imagining an Abramsverse DS9. It's been five years since the reimagined J.J. Abrams Star Trek landed on the big screen. In that time we've only gotten two movies, but the alternate timeline has expanded greatly off-screen through IDW's Star Trek Ongoing comics. A visit by Q to the Abramsverse in The Q Gambit will send James T. Kirk on quest that will see the Enterprise joining forces with familiar faces from Star Trek lore, beginning with the crew of "a certain space station…" Could this mean DS9? And if so, how would that work? In this episode of The Orb we're joined by Drew Stewart of Standard Orbit and Daniel Proulx of Earl Grey to imagine what a J.J. reboot of Deep Space Nine might look like. How would the storylines change? How big would the station be? Who would play Captain Sisko? And what does Mall of America have to do with it? Join us for this debate that spans eras, timelines, and every part of the Star Trek franchise.

The Captain's Daughter. Star Trek Generations brought us a number of shocking moments—the death of Captain Kirk, the destruction of the Enterprise-D—but one with less severe consequences was the revelation that Hikaru Sulu had a daughter. It was just a nod to the passage of time and a nice tidbit for fans that created a connection between the Enterprise-A and Enterprise-B. But did it really make sense? Kirk certainly seemed surprised by it. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones discuss Peter David's solution to the Demora Conundrum, which came in the form of the 1995 novel The Captain's Daughter. We discuss each of the story's five main points—Death, First Date, Memorial, Parenthood, and Life After Death—and whether or not the solution adequately and believably fills in the backstory of that moment in Generations. In our news segment we take a first look at the upcoming Ships of the Line art book, an attempt to reach younger fans with pop-ups, IDW's plans to bring Q to the Abramsverse, and the Starfleet Medical Officers special comics collaboration between IDW and the Tricorder X-Prize called Flesh and Stone.

Starship Mine. Life and death situations and small talk go together like Picard and Earl Grey, Troi and chocolate, or Geordi and PowerPoint presentations. Right? Well, they do in “Starship Mine,” a sixth season TNG episode that features a never-before-heard-of particle, a horse saddle, and possibly the most annoying commander in Starfleet. But "Starship Mine" is much more than a bad party with The Hutch. It's also Die Hard in Space. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Darren Moser, Mike Schindler, and Max Hegel to discuss Morgan Gendel's second TNG outing, how it uses the Die Hard framework without imitating it, the difference between trilithium and trilithium resin (hint: there may not be any), and why it may be a better episode than Gendel's more famous episode "The Inner Light." In our news segment, we read a letter from one Captain James T. Kirk to a Captain James Kirk in the US Navy, find out what award the Boston chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has for Leonard Nimoy, Oculus Rift's virtual trip to the USS Voyager bridge, and colliding timelines that combine Q and Guinan with the Abramsverse.

Faces. We all have different sides that make us who we are. The Original Series explored this masterfully in Richard Matheson's story of Kirk's struggle to live with only his good or evil half in “The Enemy Within.” When Voyager rolled around nearly 30 years later, the writers once again took us to the realm of Jekyll and Hyde incarnate with “Faces,” the story of B'Elanna's struggle between her Klingon and human halves. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt and Mariel Keeran to discuss what the story has in common with “The Enemy Within” and where it differs, how the loss of each side affected the other as B'Elanna coped with being fully Klingon and fully human, and how the writers could have taken a bold step on Voyager and turned the actions of the Vidiians into an incredible character arc. In news we examine the winners of the WeLoveFine Star Trek t-shirt design contest, get you ready for Star Trek Online's debut on Mac, learn about the return of Michael Dorn as Worf in STO, share our thoughts on the rumours of Joe Cornish directing the next Abramsverse film, and get the details of the Japanese Blu-ray release of Star Trek Into Darkness (are all the extras available in one set?). Indiscretion. The intricacies of Deep Space Nine are astonishing. By the fourth season, many relationships between members of the crew, residents of the station, and even old enemies had evolved into the rich tapestry that both kept fans engaged and made DS9 less accessible to newcomers. One of the most interesting relationships was the one between Kira and Dukat. Despite having been on opposite sides of a battle, the two found themselves forced to cooperate on more than one occasion. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Ben McCormick of Dork Trek and Tristan Riddell of Hyperchannel to discuss the episode “Indiscretion” and how it evolved the Kira-Dukat relationship. Vulcan's Vengeance. One of the most unexpected turn of events in the J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek was the destruction of Vulcan, one of the founding worlds of the Federation. The two-hour movie didn't offer enough time to explore the repercussions of this event, but IDW has been expanding the Abramsverse in comic form through the Star Trek Ongoing series. Launched in autumn 2011, Star Trek Ongoing has mainly put an Abramsverse twist on classic TOS stories. That changed with issues #7 and #8. Titled “Vulcan's Vengeance,” this two-part story plants the seeds for what could be a significant change in Vulcan philosophy in this alternate timeline. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Sean Tourangeau as we discuss this comic and the ideas that it explores. In addition to the comic itself we talk about the future of the Romulan-Federation relationship, the changing face of Vulcan, and the possibilities of a jump from paper to television. Encounter at Farpoint. When Star Trek returned to television on September 28, 1987, no one knew for sure if this experiment was going to work. Could you really capture lightning in a bottle twice? While the ship still carried the same name, the cast was completely different—and the actors relatively unknown. What's more, the show was syndicated. That doesn't seem like a big deal now, but at the time it was unusual and not known as a recipe for success. TOS vs. the Abramsverse. Few things have divided the Star Trek fan community like the J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek. Many embrace it as a needed shot in the arm that has revitalized the franchise.
