In this episode of The Object of History, we closely examine a portrait of George Washington in which he does not resemble the familiar face on the one-dollar bill. We discuss how this might be related to President Washington's longtime struggle with his dental health and the cultural significance of teeth in the 18th century. The Filmlosophers and Ensign Amy are blinded by the light -or should we say lens flare. Joined by host of The Capeless Crusaders David “Doc” Barrie, the crew “reflects” on the middle entry from J.J. Abrams' sci-fi trilogy as they dig deep in 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness. The Vulcanized Vulcans take a hard look at what could possibly be the beginning of the end for the director's efforts to reboot the beloved franchise. Has this sequel flown too close to the sun with its direct ties and parallels to its obvious inspiration, Wrath of Khan? Or has Abrams given fans a new perspective on this story? Revive your Tribbles and find out in this week's special episode of The Filmosphers!

When our inner being is filled with divine light, our eyes emanate that light, and help us navigate this life in truth and love. But when our inner being is full of darkness, our eyes will be equally dark, and everything we do will will be nothing more than stumbling in that darkness. Today we focus on the connection between being and doing, and keeping the inner fire burning so that we see clearly to light the world. Welcome to Screen Tea Podcast! This week, Lisha and Jules have a treat for you, in the form of the best-titled film in film history: John Ridley's 2021 romance/sci-fi/fantasy Needle in a Timestack! Yep. Needle. In a Timestack. Don't be too quick to judge; as much crap as your hosts give the title, they heap on the praise in equal measure. Listen up as Lisha dies on a few hills (and has an Orlando Bloom-related epiphany), Jules admires some stellar cinematography, and both of your hosts play spot-the-hidden-JJ Abrams (look, let's just say we found the needle, and it's a LENS FLARE). Watching the film Her will definitely bring about emotion with its audiences. It was just a perfect mix of great writing, great directing, and a great screenplay that gives us a deep and thought-provoking film. So join us this week as we discussed and talked about Her, the Her movie cast, the missing Her movie soundtrack, and giving our final Her film review! What is the film Her about? Spike Jonze (Source) Spike Jonze's film Her is about a recently divorced man named Theodore Twambly, installs a new personal assistant operating system. Eventually, he falls in love her (she names herself Samantha). They help each other grow as Theodore helps Samantha evolve beyond her programming and Samantha helps him navigate through his post-divorce emotions and loneliness. We think that one of the main messages this movie is trying to get across is that you are allowed to be more than what you are, especially if you are limiting yourself. Her Movie Cast Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twambly We think Joaquin did a fantastic job in this film, despite how odd he can be sometimes. The one thing we do know is that he really does commit to the roles he plays. Like many of the other cast members, he did a great job conveying the emotion and feeling of his character and the film to audiences. Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha Johansson was actually not the initial voice of Samantha. It was Samantha Morton who originally voiced this role. However, later on, Spike Jonze decided in post-production that Morton didn't provide what was needed for this film and with her blessing, Johansson was casted as the artificial intelligence character. (Photo by Gage Skidmore) Amy Adams as Amy While Adams has a smaller and supporting role in this movie, she did great just like Joaquin did by conveying the emotion her character was feeling to the audience. There was actually a bit of a side-story cut from this film about Adams' character's documentary that she is making, which obviously would've resulted in more screen time for Amy Adams, but Jonze had the original two and a half hour runtime cut down to 2 hours with the help of Steven Soderbergh. and... Chris Pratt as Paul Rooney Mara as Catherine Klausen Olivia Wilde as Blind Date Her Movie Soundtrack Arcade Fire and Owen Pallet composed the music and score for the film Her. For some odd reason though, there was never an official soundtrack released for this movie! Why not? Who decides these things? This music for this film was actually very good in our opinion and we think the soundtrack would have sold well! There have been rumblings of it being released, but no good solid leads at this point. The Her score was ultimately nominated for an Academy Award at the 86th Academy Awards show, but lost to Steven Price's score for the film Gravity. Scarlett Johansson Song in Her: "The Moon Song" "The Moon Song" was composed by Karen Orzolek and the lyrics were written by her and director Spike Jonze! During the film, Scarlett Johansson sings the song which fit perfectly within its setting. During the end credits, Orzolek can be heard singing it, though. It was nominated at the 86th Academy Awards show for Best Original Song. Unfortunately, this nomination lost as well. This time to the well-known and at the time over-play song from Frozen, "Let It Go" (rolling eyes, haha!). In any case, "The Moon Song" is a very soft and gentle song, but captures the theme of love very well. Take a listen below! Force Fed Sci-Fi's Lens Flares Sean's Lens Flare this week is the fact that nobody wears belts in the future in this film apparently. Chris argues that maybe that's just the style for that time, but Sean says that if you have them, why aren't you using them! So Chris says it's a fashion statement, but Sean's reasoning is sound as if we stop using them in the future, why would we include them on our pants anyways?
Welcome to Force Fed Sci-Fi! Meet The Force Fed Sci-Fi Team... Chris I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and developed a love for science fiction from marathons of The Twilight Zone with my dad and numerous viewings of Predator with his friends. I think sci-fi allows us to tell relevant and entertaining stories that are appreciated by everyone. Some of my current favorites include Black Mirror, Stranger Things and Blade Runner 2049. I'm also a fan of craft beer, Chicago sports, especially the Cubs, and all things that appeal to nerdy sensibilities. Sean In 1997 my parents bought us the Star Wars VHS trilogy set and instantly I became hooked on sci-fi adventure movies. That love for sci-fi transitioned into watching Star Trek Voyager, Independence Day, The Fifth Element and so much more. Sci-fi allows our dreams to become a reality. From films like Back to the Future 2 to Brazil, sci-fi is a genre that makes me feel like a kid again. Jeremy My passion for science fiction films and television was inevitable. My father was and still is a fan of many sci-fi franchises like Star Trek and Stargate. Naturally, I became a sci-fi fanatic as well since I was exposed to it growing up. Fast forward to today, and I can't wait for the next big science fiction film to hit theaters when I see the trailer. It's fun to immerse myself into a futuristic story that one day may be reality! Our Mission and Purpose... Our love for sci-fi is evident if you read our quick bios above. Our conversations about sci-fi films have always been fun and memorable. Then we decided we'd bring those conversations to you via the Force Fed Sci-Fi (Movie) Podcast as well as ForceFedSciFi.com! We uncover events leading up to these sci-fi films being released, hidden meanings and themes that might be lurking, our favorite and not-so-favorite parts of these films, nominations and legacies, and a few of our own quirky and unique picks from each film. Force Fed Sci-Fi Category Picks and Rating System! The Red Shirt of the Week... If you are a supreme sci-fi fan, you may know what a "red shirt character" from Star Trek The Original Series is. If not, it's simple. On quite a few episodes, if a landing party went down to a new planet, the team would consist of a few main characters, but also include a no-name character that wore a red shirt. If you haven't put the clues together by now, that no-name character often was the one to die in that episode. We try to pick out a no-name character with every sci-fi film we cover who dies. Sometimes there isn't anyone that dies, so in its place we may pick an animal that's killed or an object destroyed, and in rare instances, we may not have one at all. However, it is a fun element to include while we watch these films and to share those picks that we make with you and our audience! Family Guy touches on the Star Trek Red Shirt character briefly, but comically... The Lens Flare of the Week... Photo courtesy of Pkisme While many have been impressed with J.J. Abrams' versions of Star Trek and Star Wars, there was something noticed in these films that was included a bit much, especially in his Star Trek films. If you don't know what a lens flare is, it is when light enters the lens of the camera which is typically bright (sometimes blindingly bright) and in addition, the object producing light in the image or film is often blurry. While J.J. Abrams even recognized himself he included too many lens flares at times, we thought it might be fun to point out something in each sci-film that A) was included throughout the film too often, or B) did not really need to be in the film as it didn't add to the story. Force Fed Sci-Fi's Film Rating System... We have four categories a film can be labeled as: Wouldn't watch - watch it once and are comfortable never seeing it again Would watch - watch it if it makes it's way on television or Netflix Would own - adding it to your film collection in...

A popular buzz-term in the industry you may hear or see is “natural light photographer” and this means to primarily use the natural available light. Sometimes working with natural light and finding interesting shadows or glows is just about being at the right place at the right time. Being very perceptive about what is happening around you is important for finding the best light. Caleb and I wanted to share our techniques for using light; and we discuss the terms and phenomenas behind it. We discuss ambient light, dappled light, diffused lighting, back lighting, white balance, how to bounce or reflect light, how to use and play with shadows, experiment with light painting & lens flares, and how to create beautiful dynamic bokeh within your images. I included examples of the different lighting scenarios we talk about on the HouseFur.com Blog post for this episode. And! If you stay until the end; at ~43 minutes we discuss 3 tips for taking better photos with your iPhone or Smart Phone.Andddd .... if you stay until the very very end, you'll find out what Vík stole from our camera bag.Want to follow Us (Caleb & Me) on other platforms? Imagining an Abramsverse DS9. It's been five years since the reimagined J.J. Abrams Star Trek landed on the big screen. In that time we've only gotten two movies, but the alternate timeline has expanded greatly off-screen through IDW's Star Trek Ongoing comics. A visit by Q to the Abramsverse in The Q Gambit will send James T. Kirk on quest that will see the Enterprise joining forces with familiar faces from Star Trek lore, beginning with the crew of "a certain space station…" Could this mean DS9? And if so, how would that work? In this episode of The Orb we're joined by Drew Stewart of Standard Orbit and Daniel Proulx of Earl Grey to imagine what a J.J. reboot of Deep Space Nine might look like. How would the storylines change? How big would the station be? Who would play Captain Sisko? And what does Mall of America have to do with it? Join us for this debate that spans eras, timelines, and every part of the Star Trek franchise.
Gary Butterfield, Kole Ross, and Bob Mackey ask Zach whether or not Deadly Premonition is worth playing (it is). Continuing the WOLF (Watch Out for Lens Flare!) Initiative, we address the quirkiest survival horror game of the past decade. Francis York Morgan is an FBI agent who specializes in investigating the murders of young women. Oh, and red seeds. It gets much weirder from there. Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross hunch over and gruffle a can of Dishonored. Games aren’t very good at depicting nuanced ethics. Is it better to kill someone for revenge, or sentence them to a lifelong fate worse than death? That’s what we go through with Corvo, the disgraced royal bodyguard who has been framed for the Empress’s murder. Spoiler: we really love this game. This is part of our series on new games called Watch Out for Lens Flare! Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross drill deep into Bioshock. Somewhere under the sea, all hell has broken loose. In this first episode of our “Watch Out for Lens Flare!” series, we explore one of the most beloved games of this generation. This episode is sponsored by Dizzy Blonde Studios. "For beautifully hand-dyed yarns and inspired knit design." Catching Up: (0:45) Laura lost her dog Sabre. She is trying to keep busy, but it's been really hard. Jen's Stitch and Beach Group had a yarn swap. She got some different novelty yarn to play with (it will probably become charity scarves for Interval House). She also got some pretty purple laceweight yarn. Laura mentions the Cogknitive Fiber Retreat yarn swap. We talk about how useful yarn swaps are, both to give yarns you may not use a good home with people who really love them and to get yarns that you aren't used to working with (different colors and fibers) to break out of your comfort zone. We both both bought things out of our comfort zones on the Yarn Crawl. In the Knitting Bag (5:45) Jen cast on the Mysterious Shawl Knit-a-long by Romi Hill out of A Verb for Keeping Warm Floating in the colors Au Lait and Transnational Fury. Laura is still working on her Clapotis (or, as she calls it, her Sassy-tis, because the yarn was dyed to match her cat, Sassy). Laura is also working on a beaded choker design and trying to chart it and make the directions make sense and make it the correct size. Progress was a little sidelined by Sabre's passing, but now the pattern is off to the test knitter. Jen also worked on an easy scarf out of Lion Brand Homespun while watching the new Star Trek movie. She named the scarf "Chekov put on a Red Shirt" because she thinks Chekov is adorable. Jen mentions her knitting guilds: the El Segundo Slipt Stitchers and the Chocolate Martini Lace Knitters Guild. We mention designers Marnie Maclean and Janine le Cras, who does the patterns for the Unique Sheep. We digress about Chekov and Sulu in the original series and the animated series of Star Trek. Frog Pond: (15:56) Jen has had to rip back some of the bind off in the center section of her Madroña shawl because it was too tight. (Jen has issues with tight bind-offs and crocheting too tightly). Laura recommends wine to relax. Jen is hoping that beer and a marathon of Vikings with her friend will do the trick. Laura tried to substitute yarn on the Nine Dwindling Cables Beret by Yarn Owl. But math was not her friend. She's going to rip and re-knit a modified version. On Deck: (19:35) Jen is going to do a lace shawl for Camp Loopy out of Fleece Artist Saldanha Two in Vermillion color. She hasn't yet picked a project. She thinks the red color is wrong for Rock Island, so she will probably knit a pattern by BooKnits or the Romi Hill pattern Fire Bird (which she mistakenly calls "Firebrand"). Laura is going to handpaint some yarn to match Sabre and work on a scarf and fingerless mitts for her husband. This is her dissertation for Nerd Wars. Book Review: (23:58) We review 50 Sunlowers to Knit, Crochet, and Felt by Kristin Nicholas. (Full disclosure: Laura won this book in a contest from Vogue Knitting). Movie Reviews: (31:53) We give spoiler-free reviews of both Iron Man 3 and Star Trek: Into Darkness. TV Talk: (39:05) Jen talks a bit about the season finale of Doctor Who and the companions (no spoilers!). We digress into less geeky shows. Laura talks about the season ends of Grey's Anatomy, Castle, and Scandal. (All spoiler-free). We also discuss How I Met Your Mother. And then we get into the Big Bang Theory and being a geek. Also, we wish Tim Curry (star of Clue, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Oscar) a speedy recovery! We also mention the films Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Singin' in the Rain. Events: (49:22) The Knotty Girls are hosting a World Wide Knit in Public Day Event at the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa on June 15, 2013 from 1 to 3pm. No entrance to the park is required, and parking at Downtown Disney is free for up to three hours (five with validation from a restaurant or the movie theatre in Downtown Disney). There will be SWAG! Bring: 1. Your Knitting (or whatever else you want to work on) 2. Money for snacks and/or drinks 3. Any FOs you want to show off 4. A scarf for Interval House. Details: The scarf can be any yarn, any weight and may be knit, crochet, or woven. (Great for stash-busting if you want to do stripes!). The only guideline is that it be at least 4” wide and 60” long. A more open work scarf is preferred (i.e. not a heavy dense fabric) as this is for women in Southern California, but really, that can just mean using really big needles. I tend to do mine either in garter stitch or a simple rib or broken rib on big needles. Please bring the scarf in a ziplock or some other bag (the bag does not have to seal) with a paper saying your name, the yarn the scarf is made of (if you know it, if you don’t that’s okay), and any care instructions. Also please provide contact info (email and/or phone number). The contact info is just for us to get in touch with you if you win the drawing; we will not sell, trade, lend, borrow, fold, spindle, or mutilate your contact info and it will not be provided to my guild or to Interval House, I promise you. Multiple scarves = multiple entries in the drawing! KnitDizzney will be Sunday, September 8th, 2013. More details to come, but we'd love to spend a day at the Disneyland park with you!
