From a desperate existence in a Victorian freak show to his days as the toast of London high society, the life of John Merrick, the Elephant Man, has fascinated the world for well over a century. Though his disfigurement brought notoriety, it was his unblemished inner humanity that most astonished everyone he knew. Berkshire Theatre Group presents Bernard Pomerance's Tony Award-winning drama, “The Elephant Man,” May 28 - June 15 at the Unicorn Theatre in Stockbridge, MA.
Today Elaine chats with Isley Lynn and Libby Rodliffe the co-writers and performer of Jobsworth. We chat the inspiration for the show, shame around debt and our lack of honestly when it comes to finical maters, the comedy of bad bosses and we have a great laugh. Jobsworth - Pleasence Courtyard - Upstairs Dates: 31st July - 26th AUGUST (not 14th) @ 1.45 pm Tickets available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/jobsworth Jobsworth Bea's secretly working three full-time jobs. All at the same time. And she's still financially f*cked. Between looking after luxury flats and dogsitting the world's ugliest pooch, she's neck-deep in employers and it's only a matter of time until someone finds out she's breaking all her contracts. Armed with nothing but her smarmiest boss' dirty secret, can Bea get herself out of the red and into the black (and into the fit intern's bed)? Or will the plates she's been spinning come crashing down around her and her dysfunctional family? A riotous comedy about snakes and surviving capitalism. Handel completed the score only seven days before the premiere, at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket on 14 May 1723. There were eight performances in the premiere run. The work was revived on 18 April 1732, under the direction of the composer, for four performances. There were no further revivals until it was rediscovered and performed in Göttingen on 2 July 1967. The first UK performance since Handel's time was on 26 August 1969 at the Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon-on-Thames, England. As with all Baroque opera seria, Flavio went unperformed for many years, but with the revival of interest in Baroque music and historically informed musical performance since the 1960s, Flavio, like all Handel operas, receives performances at festivals and opera houses today. Among other productions, Flavio was performed at the New York City Opera in 2007 and by English Touring Opera in 2009.Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com

The Berkshire Theatre Festival Production of Nina Simone: Four Women imagines a conversation, often through music, between Simone and three African-American women. In the aftermath of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in 1963, Nina Simone rocked the nation with “Four Women,” her tribute in song to the four young girls lost in the tragedy. The production at the Unicorn Theatre runs through September 5th. To tell us more we welcome Music Director Dante Harrel, actor Felicia Curry who is playing Nina Simone, and actor Darlesia Cearcy who is playing Aunt Sarah.
The Berkshire Theatre Group production of Oscar Wilde's perennial classic, “The Importance Of Being Earnest” at the Unicorn Theatre tells the story of two bachelor friends as they take on double lives to court the attentions of the desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and the romantic Cecily Cardew. But the gallants must then grapple with the uproarious consequences of their ruse…and with the formidable Lady Bracknell, played by Harriet Harris. The results are a world filled with chaos, mistaken identity and lots of laughter. The much loved masterpiece is directed for BTG by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner David Auburn. David Auburn and Harriet Harris join us.

Quarantine Players, A New Play Podcast.| We'll Keep the Ghostlight on For You!
When the resident theatre at a Jewish Community Center commissions a new play about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a half-Jewish/half-Jordanian playwright, the Center finds itself pulled in several directions. The playwright was sent on a trip to Israel and came back with a story that only explored one side of the Westbank conflict. The playwright's narrative, told to them by a Palestinian family. Questioning the premise of the story and the balance of it becomes a point of conflict within the organization. One of the Center’s major donors, the Center’s Board President, the theatre’s Artistic Director, and the playwright each fight for a different outcome, while the Center’s Executive Director tries to keep the institution from falling off its foundation. SETTLEMENTS examines conflicts inside the Jewish community, the radicalization of young people's thoughts on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and how existing Jewish institutions are coping with these new realities. Before becoming Artistic Director of the Unicorn Theatre, the UK's leading professional theatre dedicated to producing inspiring and invigorating work for young audiences, Justin Audibert had established himself as a director, collaborating with organisations such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, Southwark Playhouse and Soho Theatre. Over lockdown, Audibert's calendar continued to be fully-booked as he directed the short film Joseph Knight for the National Theatre of Scotland and BBC Scotland, and wrote and directed the three episodes of Anansi the Spider Re-spun for the Unicorn Theatre Online and The Guardian. We caught up with Justin to find out what it's been like running a theatre during a global pandemic, and to find out more about the return of Anansi the Spider Re-spun to the Unicorn Theatre as part of its Black History Month programme. Anansi the Spider Re-spun is now available to watch via the Unicorn Theatre's Youtube Channel. Find out more https://www.unicorntheatre.com/anansi-respun (here).
Over the past 25 years, Uncle John’s Bakery has remained a staple household name within the Afro-Caribbean Community, with a community expanding across the UK as well as around the world. Founded by his parents, today’s guest is Samuel Mensah, the MD of the company. From the very start, the ethos of the business is the Ghanian saying “Obeyeyie”, which means “things will get better”. And amidst the pandemic, this ethos has been their North Star. Uncle John’s Bakery retails in major supermarkets such as Morrisons, and has collaborated with brands including Dropbox, Ghana Party In The Park, Unicorn Theatre and many more. They have also received positive recognition from major institutions such as GUBA, 10 Downing Street, British Baker and Time Out magazines. I’m excited to have Samuel on the show to learn more about running a family business. In this conversation we explore being digitally accessible, the future of the high street, his visit to 10 Downing Street – and their signature sweet bread. When we got a call from The Unicorn Theatre to take part in an R&D week to take it’s hit play “I Cinna (the poet)” and put it online, we jumped at the chance. It was a fascinating experience to see just what could be achieved on the Zoom platform, and it’s safe to say that today’s guest, lighting and video designer Will Monks, absolutely pushed the boundaries of what could be done remotely. It was a brilliant week and was so successful that they are putting the show on and have already extended the run after the initial dates sold out extremely quickly. You can see all that he’s up to by visiting his website www.willmonkstheatre.com.

War Horse has just won five Tony Awards; last year the RSC put on an acclaimed production of Matilda; and now Punchdrunk are staging their first show for children, The Crash of the Elysium. Is children’s theatre on the up – or is it still the poor relation of “proper” theatre? Where is the new writing among the successful adaptations? And what are the best shows on in Britain this summer holiday? Jan Dalley puts these questions to Tony Graham, artistic director of London’s Unicorn Theatre, Sarah Hemming, FT theatre critic, and Neville Hawcock, deputy arts editor – as well as to four budding young critics.
