In this episode of Visual Intonation, we dive into the world of interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker Anita Safowaa, whose work captivates with its profound exploration of under-documented cultural moments. Anita's multifaceted approach bridges film, audio, immersive experiences, and archival research to create deeply personal yet universal stories. Known for her thought-provoking projects like A Single Bracelet Does Not Jingle and To Those Before Me, her works have resonated with audiences at prestigious platforms like BBC Arts, Channel 4 Random Acts, and Dazed. Anita's storytelling is driven by an exploration of memory—both collective and individual—and the ways in which silenced histories can be preserved and reimagined. In our conversation, she shares how her British-Ghanaian heritage shapes her perspective on diasporic identity and how she uses mediums like VR, animation, and reflective writing to offer new ways of engaging with the past. Her commitment to preserving cultural narratives is evident in her ongoing projects, including A Journey to Stillness, a work-in-progress that promises to continue her exploration of migration and belonging. Through her role as both a second unit director and a creative producer, Anita brings a unique voice to the intersection of art and storytelling. As we talk about her experiences, she reflects on the role of the artist as a documentarian and the delicate responsibility of representing communities that have often been marginalized or overlooked. Her distinct approach encourages listeners to reconsider the power of memory and the potential for art to act as counter-history. Join us as Anita Safowaa guides us through her creative process, discussing her most impactful works, her contributions to the global conversation on migration, and her vision for the future of interdisciplinary art. Tune in for a thought-provoking conversation on the intersections of culture, history, and innovation. Anita Safowaa's Website:  https://anitasafowaa.co.uk/ Anita Safowaa's IMDB:  https://www.imdb.com/name/nm14668627/ Anita Safowaa's LinkedIn:  https://uk.linkedin.com/in/anitasafowaa Anita Safowaa's Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/anitasafowaa/ Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

Over the week/weekend just passed, the world recognized International Women's Day (https://www.internationalwomensday.com) as well as Ghana's 68th Independence Day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFioERq8Xfc). Both happenings inspire thoughts, reflections, and movement in my heart and mind especially as I, we sit in constant review of the world we are making, remaking and re-imagining for our now. My conversation this week, in our continued March Herstories Month series is with British-Ghanaian, Elvina Quaison (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/elvina-quaison), is with a diaspora working intently with and within communities engaged in this re-imagining. Reggie Nelson grew up on an East London council estate in a British-Ghanaian family that struggled with alcoholism, domestic violence and money worries. After a brush with the law at a young age, he found direction through his Christian faith and then, as a teenager, being signed to play professionally for Woking Football Club.Following his dad's sudden death on Father's day in 2013, Reggie had to quit playing football and look for a more stable career to support his family. Inspired by words from the Bible "seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" and his sister's favourite reality TV show 'How'd You Get So Rich?' starring Hollywood comedian Joan Rivers, Reggie set out on a mission to discover exactly how wealthy people got their money. He headed to one of London's most affluent areas, Kensington and Chelsea and started knocking on doors, boldly asking residents his million-dollar question. A number of chance encounters that day took him on a whirlwind journey involving; cash, an Aston Martin and the door that would take him on a path to a dream career in the world of finance.Reggie's autobiography is called Opening Doors. Media depictions of Black men historically have been centered around not so flattering stereotypes: unintelligent, lazy, prone to violence, hypersexual — and worst of all, criminal and dangerous. When he's out in public, acclaimed actor Eric Kofi Abrefa tells I SEE U he has to be make himself small and always be conscious of not appearing too aggressive. He's garnered a growing fanbase because of his breakout role as the villain in the STARZ hit crime-drama series, BMF (Black Mafia Family). He explains that a white actor is given the opportunity to portray any — and every kind of role and the audience ‘won't bat an eye' or think twice about that depiction. But when a Black actor walks on stage, without uttering a word or reciting a line of script, he is a “walking political statement.” Does this mindset unknowingly restrict audiences' thinking of what Black actors can achieve or accomplish?      Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats with the man BMF fans “love to hate:” British/Ghanaian actor, Eric Kofi Abrefa. Curators Osei Bonsu, Jess Baxter, and Genevieve Barton cross the diverse landscapes, borders, and generations of contemporary African photography, exposing how the past, present, and future can co-exist on camera. Plus, contemporary artist Ndidi Dike revisits the ‘living archive' of colonialism in Nigeria, from Independence House in Lagos, to London. Since the invention of photography in the 19th century, Africa's cultures and traditions have often been seen through Western lenses. By 1914, European powers had colonised 90% of the African continent, often using the media to construct Africa and Black diasporas, in opposition to whiteness. But photography - and photographic traditions of preservation - has long been used by artists on the continent, whether in the pioneering work of studio photographers like James Barnor in pre-independence Ghana, as a means of anti-colonial resistance and political protest in the 1950s, or powerful shots of modern Nigerian Monarchs. Tate Modern's A World in Common platforms how artists are reclaim Africa's histories and reimagining its contemporary place in the world. Curator Osei Bonsu connects show how masks, removed from their ritual context for display in European museums, can also address contemporary questions of restitution, highlighting Edson Chagas' passport-style photographs connecting Portugal and Angola. Jess Baxter and Genevieve Barton look at how globalisation, inequality, migration, and urbanisation, are differently experienced across the continent, and how their ‘hopeful' exhibition focusses as much on climate activism as climate change. Moving beyond Afrofuturism and pan-Africanism towards ideas around ecology and global solidarity, we see how artists exercise agency in ever changing cities, and through boundary-pushing practices of ‘expanded photography'. Plus, moving from the diaspora London to practice in Lagos, multimedia artist Ndidi Dike explains what discarded files and archive documents from Nigeria can reveal about the post-colonial government. Greetings Glocal Citizens! My guest this week is another long-time friend with a transformational vocation--helping leaders meet the challenges of high impact leadership. A British-Ghanaian, Michelle Awuku-Tatum has been based in the US for the majority of her professional career, particular in New York City. From her early school days managing fitting in when her family moved to Ghana from the UK and then back again, Michelle has always been fascinated by mysteries. She loves decoding situations and analyzing people. As a Professionally Certified, Executive Coach, every day she finds herself conversing with amazing leaders and executives, as they gather clues to help reshape their leadership approach and improve their skills. During her corporate career, she honed her detective skills; creating innovative processes, customer experiences, business strategies and models for global companies in Biotechnology (@lonza), Energy ( @bp Oil & Gas) and Financial Services (@Citigroup). Working with different personalities and cultures in companies that were sometimes slow to embrace change or undergoing rapid transformation, enables her to share lessons learned and relate to what her clients may be experiencing. As founder of myfactor Coaching & Consulting which she founded in 2007 her firm is contributing to a world where high-achieving leaders can show up as their best selves and create workspaces that inspire, motivate, include, develop and show care for the teams they lead. Kwame Anthony Appiah is a British-Ghanaian philosopher, the Ethicist columnist for the New York Times Magazine, and one of today's deepest thinkers about the nature of identity. His scholarly writing, journalism, and novels help us to envision a world in which our professed categories enrich rather than impoverish—or, in his terms, a world which reveres “universality plus difference.”  In this week's conversation, Kwame Anthony Appiah and Yascha Mounk discuss neutrality as a liberal ideal, the limits of identity politics, and the merits of race-abolitionism. I am British-Ghanaian, born and brought up in London, and currently located in Virginia. I have spent a lot of time in Ghana and speak 2 Ghanaian languages, as well as French and Spanish. I moved to the USA in 1986 to work for an international organization. An avid traveller, I have visited over 60 countries and love learning about different cultures. I started writing poetry and lyrics in primary school, often inspired by something I had seen, felt or heard, or, just because. And the words literally flow from my lips…. Find More of Josephine: Instagram: @armarjosephine A Statement from Josephine: "I wrote this poem in 2014 as I lay wide awake one night and found myself thinking about a host of things. Life appeared somewhat bleak, yet, when I looked out of the window the whole street was white. I hadn't remembered it was supposed to snow and I was pleasantly surprised. Suddenly, I started wondering why things happen, and why we always want answers, yet how, sometimes, it's really neither here nor there. Sometimes, not knowing is a gift. It is an honour to have my poem featured in A Moment in Time. Funnily, I was browsing Backstage looking for auditions for acting roles, having decided when I retired in 2019 to pursue my dream to be an actress. I was intrigued by the description of the project, and its purpose, and I immediately thought of this particular poem, which, for me, is soothing and may speak to others and encourage them during these turbulent times." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Created during a time of quarantine in the global Coronavirus pandemic, A Moment Of Your Time's mission is to provide a space for expression, collaboration, community and solidarity. Jedu is a proud British-Ghanaian, and was inspired to start Paradise Sun Snacks after having several fascinating conversations with his grandfather about sun cooking, life, and Africa's bountiful natural resources. During the episode, we chat about his experience growing up in London, coming to the US for college, and why he decided to return to Ghana after graduating. We also discussed what doing business in Ghana is like, and the hoops he had to jump through to get FDA approved. Tune in for more of our conversation! Quote: “I want to be a celebration of this continent. I want to celebrate what we have. I want to give the world a true taste of Africa in an incredibly eco-friendly and sustainable way.” – Jedu Armar  Resources mentioned in this episode:   Paradise Sun Snacks Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/paradisesunsnacks/

In continuing our season-long exploration of the question “What makes great art?” co-hosts Lauren Wetmore and Sky Goodden speak to essential voices about what are we seeking – and so often missing – in our experience of art. What follows is an interview with the British-Ghanaian curator, critic, and art historian Osei Bonsu. Based in Paris and London, Bonsu focuses on transnational histories of art. In conversation with Lauren Wetmore, he contemplates how we have exchanged a generosity of thought for a culture of transaction, and how the experience of meeting great art can be ahistorical – out of place and out of time. Momus: The Podcast is edited by Jacob Irish, features original music by Kyle McCrea, and assistant production from Mitra Shreeram. We would like to thank Esker Foundation for their support. And, of course, our many thanks to Osei Bonsu for his deeply meaningful contribution to this episode.
