Yascha Mounk and Kwame Anthony Appiah discuss cultivating thick identities (and thick skins). Kwame Anthony Appiah is a British-Ghanaian philosopher, Professor of Philosophy and Law and New York University, and the “Ethicist” columnist for The New York Times Magazine. In this week's conversation, Yascha Mounk and Kwame Anthony Appiah discuss why universities discarded an ethic of common humanity for a new form of identitarianism; how we can recognize and respect individual and cultural diversity without making it the main factor in our interactions; and why faculty must be agents for the change they wish to see in universities. This conversation is part of the Persuasion series “Universities, Diversity, and Democracy,” a new collection of podcasts and essays, featuring leading voices in higher education, that explores how universities can pursue truth in the spirit of philosophical liberalism and in pursuit of social progress. Media depictions of Black men historically have been centered around not so flattering stereotypes: unintelligent, lazy, prone to violence, hypersexual — and worst of all, criminal and dangerous. When he's out in public, acclaimed actor Eric Kofi Abrefa tells I SEE U he has to be make himself small and always be conscious of not appearing too aggressive. He's garnered a growing fanbase because of his breakout role as the villain in the STARZ hit crime-drama series, BMF (Black Mafia Family). He explains that a white actor is given the opportunity to portray any — and every kind of role and the audience ‘won't bat an eye' or think twice about that depiction. But when a Black actor walks on stage, without uttering a word or reciting a line of script, he is a “walking political statement.” Does this mindset unknowingly restrict audiences' thinking of what Black actors can achieve or accomplish? Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats with the man BMF fans “love to hate:” British/Ghanaian actor, Eric Kofi Abrefa. Star of the biblical comedy epic, The Book of Clarence, Kofi Abrefa shares why he is proud of his Ghanaian ancestry and why he is the biggest promotor of Ghana's film industry. The London-based actor also reveals details of an upcoming sci-fi Netflix series that will feature an all-Black cast with superhero powers.

Curators Osei Bonsu, Jess Baxter, and Genevieve Barton cross the diverse landscapes, borders, and generations of contemporary African photography, exposing how the past, present, and future can co-exist on camera. Plus, contemporary artist Ndidi Dike revisits the ‘living archive' of colonialism in Nigeria, from Independence House in Lagos, to London. Since the invention of photography in the 19th century, Africa's cultures and traditions have often been seen through Western lenses. By 1914, European powers had colonised 90% of the African continent, often using the media to construct Africa and Black diasporas, in opposition to whiteness. But photography - and photographic traditions of preservation - has long been used by artists on the continent, whether in the pioneering work of studio photographers like James Barnor in pre-independence Ghana, as a means of anti-colonial resistance and political protest in the 1950s, or powerful shots of modern Nigerian Monarchs. Tate Modern's A World in Common platforms how artists are reclaim Africa's histories and reimagining its contemporary place in the world. Curator Osei Bonsu connects show how masks, removed from their ritual context for display in European museums, can also address contemporary questions of restitution, highlighting Edson Chagas' passport-style photographs connecting Portugal and Angola. Jess Baxter and Genevieve Barton look at how globalisation, inequality, migration, and urbanisation, are differently experienced across the continent, and how their ‘hopeful' exhibition focusses as much on climate activism as climate change. Moving beyond Afrofuturism and pan-Africanism towards ideas around ecology and global solidarity, we see how artists exercise agency in ever changing cities, and through boundary-pushing practices of ‘expanded photography'. Plus, moving from the diaspora London to practice in Lagos, multimedia artist Ndidi Dike explains what discarded files and archive documents from Nigeria can reveal about the post-colonial government. A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography runs at Tate Modern in London until 14 January 2024. For more, you can read my article. In this episode I meet Adwoa Akoto, British-Ghanaian actor, writer, model and entrepreneur who appeared in HBO/BBC's hit series 'I May Destroy You'. She talks about her unusual route from economics and finance into acting and how her experience working with NGOs shaped her desire to create impact in this world. Reflecting on the conversation, she says, "I didn't even realise a lot of the answers to the questions that you're asking me, I've never really thought about in so much detail. So this has been really enlightening for myself as well." Listen to the power of silence in allowing the brain to do the thinking it needs to do - an essential element of discovering your own moments of remarkable clarity. Adwoa is an inspiration to young actors and entrepreneurs, especially those of hybrid nationality like herself, and this episode is an object lesson in how you can discover clarity in your path ahead if you just create the right environment for great thinking.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adwoaakoto_Twitter: https://twitter.com/adwoaakoto_
the Pelicans will indeed offer Williamson an extension this summer. The real question is whether or not a new contract would include benchmarks that would potentially protect the Pelicans should Williamson miss substantial time moving forward. After all, he has only played in 85 total games since New Orleans selected him with the top overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Front Row goes to the seaside and sends a sonic cultural postcard. The first major solo exhibition by British-Ghanaian artist Larry Achiampong opens at the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate on Saturday. The artist shows Samira Ahmed around, but Achiampong's isn't the only show in town. Margate has become a destination for artists and art lovers, and Tracey Emin is opening a new space for artists to work in. Samira finds out from curator Rob Diament what else is happening in this happening place, and hears from members of the People Dem Collective, artists and activists of colour who live and work in Margate. Thomas Sanderling has stepped down from his position at the helm of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra in protest of the ongoing Russian conflict in Ukraine. He talks to Samira about the Russian dilemma facing the arts world. Zinnie Harris joins Samira to discuss her play The Scent of Roses. Playing at the Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh it's a study of how secrets and lies can corrode relationships. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Jodie Keane
