I share a mistake which almost cost me the motor in my AE86, and why I do stupid things so you don't have to. Speaking of crusty 86s, I also talk about how you can now buy a reproduction (and not crusty) chassis from China, and finally I read an op-ed which proves my point that internal combustion is not going to be overtaken by EVs. What does it take to build, tune, and drive a monster Mitsubishi Evolution VIII with a 4.1-litre VR38DETT putting down 1065 hp to all four treads — on pump gas, no less? On this episode of Tuned In, we talk to the Armchair Tuner to find out.Use “EVO100” to get $100 off HPA's Tuning Starter Package: https://hpcdmy.co/tuningpackagebConrad Bradley has been building fast cars and bikes for a long time, although he currently works outside of the automotive industry in the nuclear field. Conrad couldn't tell us much about his current work projects for obvious reasons, but when it comes to his many interesting automotive projects, he's an open book.Over the years, Conrad's built many fast cars — from rapid Subarus, to even faster Evos, to an immaculate Beams-powered AE86 — we discuss all those builds in this conversation, but it's his one-of-a-kind Evolution VIII that we're most interested in.We dive deep into this build with Conrad, digging into the big questions, like:Why ditch the 4G63?Why the VR38DETT?How is it still 4WD?What was the hardest part of the build and how was it dealt with? Has it changed how the car drives? Why even build something as unique as this car in the first place? This is a fascinating look into a very serious build that presented a lot of problems, requiring unique solutions.Further into the conversation, we also discuss the challenges of owning and operating a tuning shop, reflashing challenges, Evo strengths and weaknesses, and much more. Chris Parry, aka Paz, is an AE86 and drifting legend in the drifting scene in the UK. When he bought his first AE86 and started drifting in the early 2000s, Japanese style ae86s and drifting didn't exist in the UK. Over the next several years, Paz owned several different AE86s, and he spearheaded the drifting movement and was a shining light for aggressive driving in low horsepower drift cars in the UK. Paz was a huge fan of Japanese style AE86s, inspired by people like Kaicho Hiroshi Takahashi from Team Running Free, and introduced that style to the UK. Chris talks about the first time Nomuken came to the UK for drifting, his experiences competing in D1 Grand Prix, EDC, and his journey and love for AE86s. It's an extra car-crazy episode as Colin, an AE86-owner and Hoopties card game creator, joins Ryan, Matthew, and Matthew's son Grayson in studio for what essentially becomes a more profane version of NPR's Car Talk. The three-and-a-half men discuss what it takes to create automotive-themed novelty products, the joys of AE86 ownership, the fun of Facebook Marketplace, car audio shenanigans, Volkswagens, LeMans, the consumption of sourtoe cocktails, Cheez-Its, Barbecue, and plenty of other questionable topics.
Influential ultra-progressive investors of Toyota are now calling to remove Akio Toyoda from the board entirely at Toyota's June 14 shareholder meeting. Akio stepped down as CEO on April 1st of this year (replaced by Koji Sato from Lexus), but Akio still remained on the board. AKIO TOYODA IS VIRTUALLY THE ONLY AUTOMOTIVE LEADER… With the courage to express his concerns about diving head-first into full-scale EV adoption. And whether or not you personally agree with him… really isn't the point. The point is: we deserve to hear the experts. Akio is presenting facts. But the people who pull the strings don't care about facts. In fact… they're silencing them. AKIO TOYOTA HAS A LIFETIME OF COLLECTED KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM ABOUT THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY & MANUFACTURING CARS. He was born into the Toyota family, and he has led Toyota first-hand. I would bet – the investors now calling for his resignation have no idea (and absolutely don't care) what a 4AGE, AW11, or AE86 is. The point is: They don't know the brand, and they are not investing into the best future for Toyota. They're investing into the best future that backs their other investments. For illustration – if I were one of these investors, & I happened to ALSO be even more heavily invested in cobalt & lithium mining… it would be in my best interest to silence anyone who was not 100% promoting the EV agenda. The wealth & influence is almost unfathomable. And if Akio and/or Toyota is a casualty… so be it. These investors are using their power to silence Akio Toyoda… in order to continue stacking the deck in their favor. And to keep all the useful idiots (like you & me) misinformed & compliant. IT'S BEEN SAID MANY TIMES, AND IT SHOULD GO WITHOUT SAYING: We need to be listening to the smartest people in the room when it comes to a strategy for EV adoption. Akio Toyoda has earned the platform to speak… and it would behoove everyone to listen. Why are other automotive leaders not speaking? As a society, we should not put all of our eggs in one basket & silence anyone who points out a flaw in the basket. We're past that point, it's not necessary, and the automotive industry has options. Who decided EVs are the best & only way forward… and everything else gets shelved without consideration? TOYOTA IS THE COMPANY THAT PIONEERED HYBRID VEHICLES, REMEMBER? BEFORE IT WAS “COOL”. Toyota has put more than 23 million hybrids, plug-ins, and full EVs on the road. More than every other company combined. Most of those were under the leadership of Akio Toyoda. So this call for resignation is NOT about Toyota's failure to be progressive & innovative & sustainable & green. No – this is about powerful people silencing a voice of wisdom that is questioning the agenda. It exemplifies everything that is wrong with publicly traded companies. And it's made the automotive industry incredibly vulnerable to manipulation. •Get the free S3 Magazine app•

More new music from one of our favourite labels right now, Mutual Rytm. SHDW & Obscure Shape's imprint has been consistent source of high grade techno inspired by the 90's, and their next release from Alarico is just that. The Italian funk master supplies a high octane tribal roller in ‘AE86' and we can't get enough of it. Alarico is on the back of an impressive year of music releases on the likes of Token Records, Hayes and more. The Italian youngster gained a significant amount of traction through his notable self-production only mixes, Alarico is a producer who is on a meteoric rise. Combining nuances from across the genre to shape his own fast-paced and raw yet soulful sound, the Milan-based talent hasn't slowed down since launching the alias in 2019. Having featured on the label's VA ‘Federation Of Rythm I' earlier this year, he now returns to SHDW and Obscure Shape's blossoming Mutual Rytm imprint for his first EP on the label – delivering eight cuts across both digital and vinyl for ‘Boya'. Today we premiere the A1 from Alarico's ‘Boya' EP. AE86 set's the tone with rugged driving grooves, powered through tribal percussion, cheeky vocal hits and rolling low end. This sounds like it's fresh out an early 00's rave, as Alarico drives the groove with sharp syncopated rhythms and acute sampling. This is raw and driving funked up techno at it's finest. In Part 2 of our Hawaii series brought to you by In4mation, our old friend Jason Ryan from Grip Video tells us to hold on to our okoles as he tells us about the early days of Grip Video and his observations of early drifting in Oahu and the mainland. In this episode, 2 OG drifting pioneers in the USA and Hawaii graced our podcast with their stories and experiences in the early days of drifting on the track and on the street. Steve Oliberos AKA Steevo is well known for his charismatic personality and being an OG drifter in Hawaii as well as an early competitor in Formula Drift. He recalls the early days of drifting in Hawaii (at the track and on the street), his experiences with Japanese drift heroes like Komatsu and Maeda Ken, and the sense of family and community with other drivers and aspiring drivers on the island. Stanford Lau AKA Stan the Man AKA Handsome Stan was known for his drifting skills behind his super clean silver AE86 coupe. He talks about how he learned to drift in an old dirt lot before becoming one of the most dedicated Drift Session drivers. In his quest to keep his passions for drifting alive after Hawaii Raceway Park (HRP) closed, Stan moved to Japan and lets us know what that has been like for him drifting away from his friends in Hawaii. Michael Kitchens began his involvement with Drift Session in 2004 contributing to the organization with the videos/photos that he took and edited for the Drift Session website. You can tell how fond he was of those early years as he talks about the drivers that stood out to him and how much he admired the skills of the local drivers. Mike has spent the past several years trying to get a track built on Oahu and provides some insight on those efforts. Thanks to In4mation for partnering with us on this episode. They are our favorite fashion brand from Hawaii, now worldwide. For more information please visit In4mation Please check our IG (@sileightymania) to enter our giveaway brought to you by In4mation.

In Part 1 of our Hawaii series brought to you by In4mation, our good friend Layton Takaesu gives us one propah kine podcast intro, teaches us some Pidgin and then recounts some of his memories seeing early drifting on Oahu when he was a kid. Our 3 guests in episode 10 are all pioneers of drifting in the USA in the early 2000s. Not all of them drove competitions, but what they were doing was noticed across the Pacific Ocean on the mainland and in Japan. Royce Fujimoto, known for his blue and then later brown ae86, recounts what it was like in the first Drift Session events, Ueo drifting his car in 4th gear, and "finding the land mine" on Hawaii Raceway Park (HRP). He gives us some sage advice about competing against yourself. Justin Kikkawa, known for his stylish burgundy AE86, talks about cool Japanese car style, street drifting on Tantalus, buying SSR Modex Dori Dori wheels brand new from the factory, and his car was a result of Hawaii's rich history of modifying Toyotas. Barry Wong was Benson's Team KAAZ teammate in Formula D, and also an OG in Hawaii's drift scene. He's now the father of 2, but he shares his memories of starting with the locally popular Toyota pickup truck, then his ae86 and the S13 hatchback that he keeps ready for drifting to this day. Please check our IG (@sileightymania) to enter our giveaway brought to you by In4mation. Hint: Listen until to the very end of the episode for some extra culture. It's good for you!
Carlos has been drifting for over 10 years in his AE86. Recently competing in an MKIV Supra and finishing up a GT86 to compete in.
Wekfest San Jose 2021. We talk with Riko about the build process for his SEMA 2019 AE86 and his SEMA 2021 IMSA GTU 240z. Stay tuned until the end where Riko also gives his top 3 keys to life success.
Tommy Chen founded SpeedTrial USA, a group that hosted road racing events in the 90s. With his friends, he was able to get Option Video with Keiichi Tsuchiya, Nomuken, and Daijiro Inada to come host the very first drifting competition on US soil in 1996. In '99, Tommy hosted the first sanctioned US drifting event under the guise of "car control" run groups. In 2002, Tommy made history again when he hosted an event with icons of the AE86 drift world Hiroshi Takahashi and Shinji Minowa. Toshiki Yoshioka started drifting in 1996 when he discovered it at touge as a young boy in Japan. In this episode of the Sileighty Mania Podcast, he talks about how he got started with drifting and became a member of Team Bross Running Crazies. Listen as he takes us behind the scenes of early drifting in Japan, spills the tea on fellow D1GP drivers, and what he thinks of the difference between drifting in the USA and Japan. We're so honored to have Yoshi on the podcast, somebody who worked hard as an unknown driver and has become one of the greatest AE86 drifters ever. UPDATED FOR 2021. On this episode I will reveal my top three choices for ae86 manual transmission options and give an in depth look at all three options. While the majority of info from episode 4 still holds true, I'll interject with my updated thoughts and findings throughout the episode.
Moto Miwa likely could've been the next Japanese noodle king of the United States, but his heart and passion was into cars and racing instead. In the early 90s, he built his first ae86 coupe with a supercharged 4agze and founded the now infamous website for all things toyota - Club4AG.com. Moto talks about co-founding Drift Association and hosting possibly the earliest legally sanctioned drift events on US soil, allowing early US drift competitions to exist such as Falken Drift Showoff, RS-R Drift Festival, Option Ikaten, and D1 Grand Prix. Don't miss his story where details a late night favor for Keiichi Tsuchiya aka The Drift King, helping him escape Option Video staff in the middle of the night. More recently, he covertly aided in R&D for Toyota Motor Corporation as they were developing the Toyota 86. Thank you Falken Tires for sponsoring this episode. We are beyond blessed to be able to work with so many amazing like-minded brands every month for the podcast. Announcements for a giveaway will be made in a few days on our instagram @sileightymania

We start episode one with Phillip Lee aka ClubFR Phill aka 2L because for some reason, he spells Phil with two L's. (You'll eventually learn everyone in Chicago drifting is named Phillip, Rob, Dave, or Eric, so they all have their own nicknames
Getting to know a few of the Toronto car scene's finest in this episode; David, the Head Honcho at Fitted (the auto lifestyle brand in Canada, and host to thousands of car fans yearly at his events), and Jover the Drift Aficionado (an official AE86 OG).We chat about what it means to be enthusiastic about cars, and what rewards you can reap when you put in your time. I'm just getting started with The Bucket Seat, but was honoured to have these guys in for the first of many chats. Apologies for the shite audio quality on Jover - but it does have him sounding fittingly elusive.
