Our guest in this episode is a Briton who is based in Berlin, namely Andrew Steele. Earlier in his life Andrew spent nine years at the University of Oxford where, among other accomplishments, he gained a PhD in physics. His focus switched to computational biology, and he held positions at Cancer Research UK and the Francis Crick Institute.Along the way, Andrew decided that aging was the single most important scientific challenge of our time. This led him to write the book "Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old". There are a lot of books these days about the science of slowing, stopping, and even reversing aging, but Andrew's book is perhaps the best general scientific introduction to this whole field.Selected follow-ups:https://andrewsteele.co.uk/https://www.youtube.com/DrAndrewSteelehttps://ageless.link/Topics in this conversation include:*) The background that led Andrew to write his book "Ageless"*) A graph that changed a career*) The chance of someone dying in the next year doubles every eight years they live*) For tens of thousand of years, human life expectancy didn't change *) In recent centuries, the background mortality rate has significantly decreased, but the eight year "Gompertz curve" doubling of mortality remains unchanged*) Some animals do not have this mortality doubling characteristic; they are said to be "negligibly senescent", "biologically immortal", or "ageless"*) An example: Galapagos tortoises*) The concept of "hallmarks of aging" - and different lists of these hallmarks*) Theories of aging: wear-and-tear vs. programmed obsolescence*) Evolution and aging: two different strategies that species can adopt*) Wear-and-tear of teeth - as seen from a programmed aging point-of-view*) The case for a pragmatic approach*) Dietary restriction and healthier aging*) The potential of computational biology system models to generate better understanding of linkages between different hallmarks of aging*) Might some hallmarks, for example telomere shortening or epigenetic damage, prove more fundamental than others?*) Special challenges posed by damage in the proteins in the scaffolding between cells*) What's required to accelerate the advent of "longevity escape velocity"*) Excitement and questions over the funding available to Altos Labs*) Measuring timescales in research dollars rather than years*) Reasons for optimism for treatments of some of the hallmarks, for example with senolytics, but others aren't being properly addressed*) Breakthrough progress with the remaining hallmarks could be achieved with $5-10B investment each*) Adding some extra for potential unforeseen hallmarks, that sums to a total of around $100B before therapies for all aspects of aging could be in major clinical trials*) Why such an expenditure is in principle relatively easily affordable*) Reflections on moral and ethical objections to treatments against aging*) Overpopulation, environmental strains, resource sustainability, and net zero impact*) Aging as the single largest cause of death in the world - in all countries*) Andrew's current and forthcoming projects, including a book on options for funding science with the biggest impact*) Looking forward to "being more tortoise".Music: Spike Protein, by Koi Discovery, available under CC0 1.0 Public Domain Declaration

Today Debbie tackles the topic of aging (better? longer??) with Andrew Steele, an ebullient British scientist, writer and author of Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old.After earning a PhD in physics from Oxford, Andrew decided that aging -  not cancer or other diseases - was the single most important scientific challenge of our time. Why? Because of the suffering that goes along with old age.So he switched fields to biogerontology, the study of the processes of aging at the cellular level.Andrew, 37, doesn't advocate for immortality. As he puts it: “It's not about extending lifespan, but rather healthspan." His interest, he maintains, is in helping humans stay healthier longer. Debbie asks Andrew what the most important biological aging processes are. He responds with a clear explanation of cell biology as it relates to aging: from senescent cells and cellular exhaustion to your epigenetic age, and more. And he explains that some of these genes and processes can be manipulated to slow or possibly reverse aging - at least, so far, in worms and mice.Andrew is exuberant and makes everything understandable. They talk about:The 10 hallmarks of the aging processSpecifically, how research on worms and mice translates to humansWhy 65 - 70 could be the ideal age to take an anti-aging pill (no, it doesn't exist yet)They also discuss:Dietary restriction (a topic of aging research since the 1950s)Why the mega-wealthy are so interested in biohacking to improve health and extend lifeMoral and ethical implications of humans living much longerThis is an important conversation and we hope you will find it as thought provoking as we did.   Mentioned in this episode or useful:BioYouTube channelHow science can reverse aging - and why we'd want to (video)TwitterInstagramAndrew's book and bonus chapterAgeless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old by Andrew Steele (Doubleday, 2021)Bonus chapter: The ethics of ageing biology by Andrew SteeleVideo from bonus chapter: Would curing aging destroy the planet?Articles and referencesBiogerontologyLooking Forward to Your 170th Birthday by Annie Murphy Paul (New York Times Book Review, April 2, 2021)Why Anti-Aging Science is so Alluring by Daniela J. Science can't fully explain what life is. Three experts try anyway in a conversation about life, death and our desire to push back the expiration date. Talking about life and death is tricky for anyone, even scientists. Despite considerable research over the course of generations, scientists still don't fully understand what life is, what death is or even what separates the two.  But where science lacks understanding, there are theories and questions about what makes something alive and how to keep living things from aging. And there are intriguing thoughts on the ethics of efforts to prolong life. These are the questions at the heart of this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, featuring Andrew Steele, author of the book Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old, and Carl Zimmer, who writes the New York Times column Matter and is the author of Life's Edge: The Search for What It Means to Be Alive. Led in conversation by University of Washington doctoral candidate Halli Benasutti, these two experts discuss life, death, aging and consciousness. And while they may not be able to arrive on concrete definitions of these elusive concepts, they certainly have very interesting insight into each. --- Credits Host: Mark Baumgarten Producers: Sara Bernard, Brooklyn Jamerson-Flowers Event producers: Jake Newman, Andrea O'Meara Engineers: Resti Bagcal, Viktoria Ralph --- If you would like to support Crosscut, go to crosscut.com/membership. With the help of science, could humans find a way to become old without getting elderly, a phenomenon otherwise known as "biological immortality"? In Ageless, Andrew Steele, research fellow at Britain's new and largest biomedical laboratory, the Francis Crick Institute, shows us that the answer lies at the cellular level. He takes us on a journey through the laboratories where scientists are studying every aspect of the cell--DNA, mitochondria, stem cells, our immune systems, even age genes that can lead to a tenfold increase in life span (in worms, anyway)--all in an effort to forestall or reverse the body's (currently!) inevitable decline. With clear writing and intellectual passion, Steele shines a spotlight on a revolution already under way and offers reality-based hope. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

Aging—not cancer or heart disease—is the world's leading cause of death and suffering. In spite of this, we accept the aging process as inevitable. We come to terms with the fact that our bodies and minds will begin to deteriorate and our risk of disease will rise as we get older. Aging is so deeply ingrained in the human experience that we never stop to ask: is it necessary? Scientists, on the other hand, know that aging is not a biological inevitability. Imagine having energy and vitality right up to the very end. Imagine not ending up frail, decrepit, or unable to bring your body back to balance because you didn't think it—aging—would happen to you? This week Dr. Andrew Steele is on the show to discuss his new book, "Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old" and the exciting new scientific discoveries that address what he calls "the greatest humanitarian issue of our time."  In this episode you will learn what aging actually is, and how scientists are studying every aspect of the body - DNA, mitochondria, senescent cells, stem cells, our immune systems, even longevity genes to help increase the lifespan of animals tenfold - all in an effort to forestall or even reverse our decline.  Episode Links IG @andrewjsteele YouTube @AndrewSteele Twitter @statto Get the book "Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old" López-Otín C, Blasco MA, Partridge L, Serrano M, Kroemer G. In 2020, the global market for anti-aging products was estimated at US$52.5 Billion and is projected to reach US$83.2 Billion by 2027. However, ideas around aging (and the way it's portrayed in media and marketing) seem to be changing for the better, and some anti-aging techniques are showing great promise. Dr. Andrew Steele, author of Ageless, has dedicated his professional career to identifying factors that age us. In this episode of Psychologists Off the Clock, he and Diana discuss the science behind why we grow old and the evidence-based approaches individuals of all ages can use to target those aging factors. It might sound like science fiction, but computational biologist and science writer Dr. Andrew Steele joins today's show to reveal the scientific research that is being conducted within the little known longevity research community that very well may “cure” aging within our lifetime.   In today's show, Dr. Andrew Steele explains the “one graph” that triggered his fascination with longevity and the years of research that led to his book. He explains why the human body ages. Discusses existing “ageless” animals in nature. The importance of healthspan vs. lifespan. The concept of biological vs. chronological age. The ground breaking research being conducted today and when it may become available to the general public in the future. Whether or not humans can truly live to be “immortal”. The consequences of an ageless world population and why we need to start planning now. What listeners can do today to live longer and the concept of longevity escape velocity.   Mentioned In the Show: Dr. Steele's Book:  Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older   Follow Dr. Steele: Dr. Steele's website: https://andrewsteele.co.uk/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/statto Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andrewjsteele/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/DrAndrewSteele   Follow The Professional Athlete Podcast with Ken Gunter: Instagram: @kengunter_tpa Website: https://www.kengunter.com/ YouTube: Ken Gunter https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRhgjkoSiJXAbS_MIasvvzQ/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kengunterpodcast Audio recorded with SquadCast: https://squadcast.fm/?ref=kengunter Produced By: Justin Gunter, Ken Gunter Music By: Justin Gunter, Ken Gunter
