Great post with some three powerful reminders to help us to understand life a little bit more. It comes from Book Therapy (@Book_therapy223) where it's mentioned that - “You have to visit 3 locations to understand life: the hospital, the prison and the cemetery.” There are many connections to each of these three as just about most people can quickly understand each of these places. I know that it gets me thinking about life a bit more and I hope that I can share some connections that will get you thinking too. Thanks for listening. In our Translating Proteomics episode titled "Harnessing Proteoforms to Understand Life's Complexity", Parag and Andreas discussed why proteoforms are important in a theoretical sense. In this episode, Parag sits down with Northwestern University Professor and proteoform pioneer, Neil Kelleher to dive deep into the biology of proteoforms. They cover:What proteoforms areExamples of the importance of proteoformsThe scale of and technological advances needed to meet the challenges of proteoform biology. Some examples of the power of proteoforms covered in this episodeRecent work from Neil's lab showing blood proteoforms can help predict liver transplant success (Melani et al. 2022).Work form Ying Ge's lab showing changes in troponin proteoforms correlate with varying degrees of heart disease (Zhang et al. 2011).The BioTyper - a mass spectrometry-based device that can identify different kinds of microbes.Additional proteoform resourcesThe Human Proteoform Atlas webpagePublication describing The Human Proteoform Atlas (Hollas et al. 2022)Publication discussing how many human proteoforms there are (Aebersold et al. 2018)Animation - Proteoform Analysis on the Nautilus Proteome Analysis Platform
We often find ourselves tangled in a web of questions, searching for meaning, seeking answers, and trying to understand the complexities of life. We read, we ponder, we analyse, hoping that if we could just understand it all, we might find peace. But what if the key to a fulfilling life isn't in understanding it, but in living it?

Proteins are far more than just the output of genes. They can be modified in myriad ways to produce millions of proteoforms with altered dynamics, localization, and function. For a comprehensive understanding of biology that will propel drug development and biomarker discovery forward, we need to be able to measure proteoforms routinely. In this episode, Parag and Andreas discuss the incredible value that will come from studying proteoforms and describe what it will take to make proteoform measurement a routine part of biology research.Chapters:00:00 - Introduction to proteoforms09:38 - Evidence that proteoforms are important and how we can use proteoform data19:28 - Technology advances needed to understand proteoform biology
Ever wondered how we can understand our various trials of life? Well James says we should ask confidently of God for wisdom in times of trials. Together, we navigate James 1:5-8, dissecting the scripture's assurance that when we ask for divine wisdom with unwavering faith, it is bestowed upon us without reservation. The wisdom we should seek however, goes beyond mere knowledge acquisition; it's an expedition into understanding the purpose of adversity and the spiritual maturation it's designed to engender. Whether you're wrestling with trials, seeking wisdom, or reevaluating your perspective on your salvation, this episode promises a fresh viewpoint, cemented in the eternal rather than the temporal. Join us for this thought-provoking journey as we continue to Reason Through the Bible, seeking a life of wisdom and humility.Support the show
We take a moment to consider the complexity of a life. When we have our Celebration of Life for a loved one, we often (because of time constraints) melt the individual down to a few outward factors. He loved to go fishing. He was a big Mel Tormé fan. You know, the stuff everybody could see. But we all live day by day, minute by minute and our lives covers decades of experiences. Loves won and loves lost. Successes and failures. We hold a spot in our families. I am a father, a husband, a son, a brother, a cousin, etc. We have friends, acquaintances, and coworkers. The Christian struggles daily with the flesh (the old nature). In all this complexity, there is one who knows us intimately. There is one who knows our fears, our pain, our loss, our sins, our victories, our strengths and weaknesses. God understands each us better than we understand ourselves and surely better than we understand each other.

Part 12 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.' The conclusion to the series is another first-time idea, very Taleb-inspired, called ‘The Risk See-Saw'. It denotes that, trying to control for Small Risks creates big risks, but trying to avoid big risks makes us more sensitive to small risks… the theory is that most of us spend our entire lives worrying about exactly the opposite things we should be worrying about… and we end up creating them. Science can't fully explain what life is. Three experts try anyway in a conversation about life, death and our desire to push back the expiration date. Talking about life and death is tricky for anyone, even scientists. Despite considerable research over the course of generations, scientists still don't fully understand what life is, what death is or even what separates the two. But where science lacks understanding, there are theories and questions about what makes something alive and how to keep living things from aging. And there are intriguing thoughts on the ethics of efforts to prolong life. These are the questions at the heart of this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, featuring Andrew Steele, author of the book Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old, and Carl Zimmer, who writes the New York Times column Matter and is the author of Life's Edge: The Search for What It Means to Be Alive. Led in conversation by University of Washington doctoral candidate Halli Benasutti, these two experts discuss life, death, aging and consciousness. And while they may not be able to arrive on concrete definitions of these elusive concepts, they certainly have very interesting insight into each. --- Credits Host: Mark Baumgarten Producers: Sara Bernard, Brooklyn Jamerson-Flowers Event producers: Jake Newman, Andrea O'Meara Engineers: Resti Bagcal, Viktoria Ralph --- If you would like to support Crosscut, go to crosscut.com/membership. Every day we are making decisions that require significant wisdom that affect our present and future. The challenge of distinguishing what is truly right with just our own understanding and experience can result in foolish choices and impulsive decisions. How do we gain godly wisdom? This summer we turn to the book of Proverbs as we pursue together absolute wisdom found in the person of God and apply this wisdom to our daily lives. People remember songs very easily. We also tend to remember acronyms, which is why we usually use them to recall things that may not so easily be remembered otherwise, like the corresponding musical notes on the lines and spaces of the pentagram and other useful things. Jesus used something a little different to help us not only remember spiritual teachings but to also reflect on the depth of His teachings. He used a common literary device to teach profound spiritual truths which are still reverberating in our collective consciousness. Life is full of paradoxes and once we become aware of them, we can use them to our advantage. As Tony Robbins says, "Strong self awareness breeds high quality decision making. Foolish self-confidence breeds nothing of use". We can all do better to challenge ourselves and use these paradoxes to create the life we want to live. This week I am talking to Dr Bruce Greyson about his book 'After: A Skeptical Scientist's Journey to Understand Life, Death, and Beyond'. In After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond, one of the world's leading experts on near-death experiences shares the lessons he has learned over nearly a half century of studying near-death experiences. Backed by decades of pioneering scientific research and captivating first-hand accounts, Dr. Greyson reveals the evidence that led him to rethink his understanding of the nature of life, death, and the continuity of consciousness. Although NDEs reveal a lot about dying and what might come after, they reveal as much about life and living, about the value of compassion and our interconnectedness with one another, and about what makes a life meaningful and fulfilling. After invites us to open our minds to these experiences, and in so doing, expand our understanding of what it means to be human. Bruce Greyson is the Chester F. Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia Medical School. He graduated from Cornell University with a major in psychology in 1968, received his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical College in 1973, and subsequently completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Virginia. He held faculty appointments and taught psychiatry at the University of Michigan (1978-1984) and the University of Connecticut (1984-1995), where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry, before returning to the University of Virginia, where he has continued to teach and practice psychiatry and carry out research since 1995. One of the founding members of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, Dr. Greyson served on its Board of Directors and as its President and Director of Research. For the past 26 years, he has edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, and was the senior editor of The Near-Death Experience: Problems, Prospects, Perspectives (Charles C Thomas, 1984), co-author of Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007), and co-editor of the forthcoming The Handbook of Near-Death Experiences: Thirty Years of Investigation (Praeger, 2009). His near-death research for the past three decades has focused on the aftereffects of the experience, and have resulted in more than 75 presentations to national and international scientific conferences, 100 publications in academic medical and psychological journals, and several research grants and awards. https://www.amazon.com/After-Doctor-Explores-Near-Death-Experiences-ebook/dp/B08BYDT3KL/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1613293764&sr=8-1 https://www.brucegreyson.com/ https://teespring.com/en-GB/stores/the-past-lives-podcast https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

Galen's done five podcasts in the past week (Indiana fired its basketball coach. Perhaps you heard?), so what's one more? After some short follow up about Indiana basketball and their sorry NCAA brackets, the boys get down to business. There's a deep dive down the 1990s alternative rock rabbit hole, and the boys talk about what makes a good question for a journalist. And they discuss what kind of clothing they would like to see able to immediately order take-out food.
If you've ever lost a loved one, and didn't get closure or felt there was something left to say, some unfinished business or emotions that have nagged you for years, then this is the show for you. Today we'll be talking with Bill Philipps, he's the author of Expect the Unexpected: Bringing Peace, Healing and Hope from The other Side. He's a very rare individual who I truly believe can communicate with those who have passed on. He's called a psychic medium, only because they haven't come up with a better term. His job is to allow spirits to communicate with him, or through him and to pass along messages. Perhaps you could say he's the Twitter, Instagram or Facebook of the spiritual world, but he's so much more. Today we'll talk about life after death, messages from beyond, and how they can bring us peace, healing, comfort and hope. Questions and Topics Include: How Bill Phillips got through a very traumatic childhood. How a spiritual experience at 15 changes his life. We cannot understand the cross, and the way of the cross unless we understand life. What is life? Most people do not know the answer to this simple question or understand why the way of the cross is the only way to have life, or understand what is meant when we are told to "lose our life," or that everything in our life is an exchange - with life or death. Sunday of the Cross. Mark 8:34-9:1
Evolution is among the most powerful ideas in the natural sciences. Indeed, the evolutionary theoristTheodosius Dobzhansky famouslysaid nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution. Yet despite its central place in the life sciences, relatively few geographers employ evolutionary theory in their work. In his new book Evolutionary History:Uniting History and Biology to Understand Life on Earth (Cambridge University Press, 2011), Edmund Russell makes a compelling case for why evolution matters for human history. Russell argues that evolution is both important and common. Through a number of case studies, he shows how poaching in Africa led to the evolution of tuskless elephants and intensive fishing fostered the development of smaller salmon and cod. But perhaps more importantly, he shows how anthropogenic, or human shaped, evolution played a pivotal role in two of the fundamental developments of human history: the agricultural and industrial revolutions. His book is a challenge to historians, geographers, and other scholars and the social sciences to recognize the pivotal role evolution has played in human history and to see cultural, political, and economic factors as forces in evolution. Professor Russell is Joyce and Elizabeth Hall Distinguished Professor of U.S. History at the University of Kansas, and is a leading scholar in the fields of environmental history and the history of technology. His previous book, War and Nature: Fighting Humans and Insects with Chemicals from World War I to Silent Spring, examined the complicated and fraught relationship between chemical weapons production and insecticide development and the consequences of their use for both humans and nature as a whole.
