Bronwyn has masters degrees in both Counseling and Nutrition. Rather than suppress or avoid it, she advocates for acknowledging anger, attuning to it, and channeling it healthily through boundaries, assertive communication, or accountability. The discussion delves into the role of childhood experiences in shaping our emotional responses and the impact of shame and betrayal on mental health. Bronwyn emphasizes the need to heal our relationship with anger to foster self-integration and wholeness. By understanding anger as a natural and necessary emotion, we can cultivate healthier relationships with ourselves and others. Humans are so full of water that we are like a walking ocean, but did you know that the water inside of us may be prematurely aging us too? Victor explains that this is because deuterium, a heavier form of hydrogen that has been proven to shorten lifespans, is found in most water. After researching deuterium's effects for decades and visiting communities where people drinking water without deuterium enjoyed a longer lifespan, Victor concludes that deuterium is key to aging and should even be classified as a disease. Those in the blue zone may encounter less deuterium, but it's their daily longevity habits that supercharge their ability to ward off its effects. Because they feel safe, not stressed, and have a strong sense of belonging, their parasympathetic nervous system tends to be more activated. Victor offers fascinating insights into quantum entanglement, water as a universal consciousness, and the intelligence of this amazing substance. He sheds light on deuterium's origin and how it came to play the role on earth that it does today. If you're interested in naturally boosting your energy levels, don't miss this episode. Marie Helene is a true innovator in the wellness space. We discuss Marie Helene's early years working in dolphin rebirthing therapy. Part of the healing comes from the environment of being in the water, which is like being in the womb. There are so many lessons communicated through nature that are not available in most normal modern environments. Wild environments truly bring wild experiences!Dolphins aren't always immediately available, of course, and we discuss an immediately accessible technique for reconnecting with nature called the sit spot. Reconnecting with nature is essential to reconnect with our essence. This is the path to aging with grace and part of Helene Marie's mission to re-educate people about aging. Instead of experiencing aging as approaching the end of life, it's the time when we can experience the most beautiful aspects of life and expand into who we've always wanted to be. Marie shares a powerful practice for redefining your purpose and bringing your real motivations to the surface so they can be celebrated or worked on. Attitude is everything when it comes to aging, and I hope this episode inspires you to lean into your age, whatever that may be!Special thanks to listener GabyUSA10 for their five-star review and tuning in each week!If you are enjoying these conversations, please subscribe and spread the love by leaving a review and sharing it with your friends.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform. After catching up with my friend Amy Boyle recently, whom I've known since 2010, I felt compelled to share her full circle story and how it relates to a woman's lifecycle. Amy's story reminds me of how remarkable women are. At every stage, from mom to caregiver, from artist to teacher, from professional to being in service, women have the capacity to shapeshift to whatever situation presents at any given time. Amy vulnerably shares how the experience of caring for her mother as she prepared to transition became a treasured gift of service. Instead of halting her career or fighting what was happening, she simply allowed its trajectory to shapeshift. There's so much wisdom in allowing for life's great unfoldings. As a photographer, Amy recalls that the lens is an extension of her heart. Through it, she sees and captures the goodness, beauty, energy, and spark of the world. Her vision is contagious! She then walks us through how she decided to take a leap into journalism, first as a student and now as a teacher. The story of the courage and curiosity that runs through Amy's family, from her mother to her son, will warm your heart. Don't miss this positivity boost! When was the last time you felt stressed out? How about real inner ease? Katie Richardson joins me on Vitally You® to talk about how we can feel at ease in stressful situations. My childhood friend and accomplished poet, Michelle Delaine Williams, joins me on Vitally You® to talk about her poetry chapbook, Good Work for Small Hands. Her book centers around her childhood in Missouri and her relationship with her mother. She shares that reflecting on those memories was profoundly cathartic, which really comes through in several of the poems she recites for us. Michelle's poem, Sprout, which she reads beautifully, transports the listener into a young person's world of feelings. Sprout invites a conversation about taking responsibility for our own lives no matter how they began. Since becoming a grandmother twice within the last 18 months, I've been thinking a lot about how we come into this world and the importance of our upbringing in shaping our future. Did you know that your “vibe” is a real, palpable thing? This week, I'm sharing how you can neutralize triggering emotions and calm your body when you feel anxious, stressed, and depleted using very simple science-backed breathing techniques.Your heart is so smart that it knows your feelings based on the vibration broadcast throughout your body. All feelings either fuel positive or negative charges in the body. How people experience you is through this vibration; the energy that is broadcast emanates from your heart rate variability. I share the story of how I first discovered this connection and how healing the heart has more to do with the mind and emotions. This ultimately led me to discover the HeartMath®️ Institute. Through HeartMath®,️ I discovered their scientific breathing techniques that taught me how to calm triggering emotions and restore coherence throughout my mind and body system. HeartMath® techniques neutralize triggering emotions during stressful periods, which will otherwise negatively impact your heart rate. This is important because the brain decides the next best action based on your heart rate. The techniques restore coherence between the heart and the brain rhythms by promoting positive emotional states such as appreciation, compassion, and gratitude. I then introduce the emotional compass, which illustrates how certain emotions impact the nervous system. This framework gives a deeper understanding of how, why, and when the brain releases either stress hormones or happy hormones. To encourage the happy hormones, I offer detailed instructions on how to perform three HeartMath®️ breathing techniques: Heart-Focused Breathing®, the Inner Ease®, and the Heart Lock-In®. Our nervous system can get stuck in flight, fight, or freeze, and can potentially compromise our health and immunity. I leave several questions for listeners to ask themselves to gain deeper insight into their own connection between heart and brain, as well as breath, body, and emotions. If you are enjoying these conversations, please subscribe and spread the love by leaving a review and sharing it with your friends.Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, or on your favorite podcast platform. Taking leadership of your heart health is a key to longevity and vitality. In this episode, I provide a framework for heart health beyond the conventional model that is reliant upon medications. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S. and is the leading cause of death globally. The conventional model relies upon medications to manage blood pressure and cholesterol. If you are willing to take leadership over your heart health, lifestyle and stress management modalities can change the trajectory of your heart health. When it comes to taking lifelong blood pressure medications, my advice is to question if you want to be on medication for the rest of your life and alternatives for balancing blood pressure. that protocol. Research supports health coaching as a viable option to positively impact blood pressure without medication. I provide specific nutrient and mineral deficiencies to consider. Additionally, HeartMath® breathing techniques and LifeWave's light therapy patches support heart health. It's important to understand cholesterol beyond the traditional simplified labs that measure HDL, LDL, and the ratio between the two. In this episode, we take a deep dive into cholesterol and its role in healthy hormone production for peri and menopausal women. I introduce ApoB, which is an important marker if you have high LDL. ApoBis a protein that plays a crucial role in lipid metabolism and cardiovascular health. If ApoB levels are too high, statins may be prescribed. Stains block an enzyme in the liver called Coenzyme Q10. I then review the many potential and likely side effects of statins, again encouraging lifestyle shifts as an alternative.Lastly, I give my top tip for what to address first for heart disease or metabolic chaos and then wrap up with my three-part framework for a heart healthy lifestyle. A heartfelt thanks to listener cocofrosty7, who left the show a glowing review of Vitally You®: “Trailblazer in wellness, always ahead of the curve when it comes to wellness, and thought-provoking wisdom and guidance.” Your review is deeply appreciated, cocofrosty7, and all reviews as they help keep the podcast going. Do you recognize any patterns in your life? As a human being, I'm sure the answer is a resounding yes. When you find yourself defaulting to an unwanted pattern, you can choose to ignore it or do the work to clear it. In this episode, I unpack the deep connection between thoughts, beliefs, and actions, as well as what I do when I start reliving old patterns that don't serve me.In the past few months, I found myself believing that no one understands me, I don't have room in my personal life for my work, and that the people I love the most don't respect my career. The busy holiday season brought me back to the years when I was raising my children and supporting my husband's career. It's been a long time since these thoughts have come up, but it was an important reminder that life is about presence, not perfection. When I found myself feeling depleted and stagnant, I took an honest look at my sleep, nutrition, movement, and mindset. I leaned into the practices that have supported me in the past, such as doing my sunrise and sunset routines, getting on my Power Plate, and mirror gazing. Most importantly, when I felt resistance or constriction, I became really curious about it and worked to reframe the thoughts that would appear in those moments. Listen in to hear how you can cultivate space to release unconscious thought patterns and create a strategy to free yourself from the beliefs that hold you back. In today's episode, I discuss the emotional experiences that are magnified during the holidays and the extremes of navigating the healing process. I invite you to sit with me for a few moments while I lead a meditation to soothe emotional triggers and provide a pillow of support. It's a potent time of the year and I want to stick with you on this journey back to yourself. First, I guide you through how to find a comfortable position and begin to connect with your body. What does your breath feel like? Allow physical touch as you bring attention to all parts of yourself. From there, start to notice the sensations and vibrations throughout your electric body. Where do you feel tingling? When you bring attention to a part of your body, you can understand what's happening in that part of the body. This light body is your vital life force. As you are present in your light body, I share a visualization technique to encapsulate your earth body with a golden light. Then, slowly acknowledge an emotional trigger as you release it from the heart. Can your golden light flow into the heart, clearing energy with warmth and ease? You have the power to be present with your feelings and care for them.I'm thinking about you, the Vitally You community, with gratitude, respect, and compassion. In today's episode, I share three coaching tips to help you thrive during the holidays and explore how these self-care strategies can raise energy, shift perspective, and promote healing. I also provide specific examples to help integrate these tips into your daily life beyond the holiday season.Tip #1: Give yourself permission to take timeouts when with extended family or during large gatherings. Carving out time for yourself will keep your energy tank properly refueled. I detail why I call these the “islands of respite.”Tip #2: Practice a 12-hour fast and be mindful that your daily habits include consuming protein, fiber, and fat. Also, make sure you're staying hydrated and properly digesting and eliminating. I illustrate how this allows the body to properly reset and heal throughout the day and night. Tip #3: Use the Freeze Frame five-step HeartMath technique to shift you from a triggered state to a state where you can heal. I share why this is a powerful tool to call upon our Higher Self and observe the beneficial shifts. Plus, I detail an exciting health tech startup called The Metapause that wants to change the menopause narrative and experience for women. I share how my own menopause story was related to my 2011 health crisis involving a pacemaker, various doctors, and learning the role of hormonal health beyond our physical structure. I want to invite you to evaluate every aspect of your life in support of an easier menopause transition and healing in a healthy way.Listen to this episode for three coaching tips to help you thrive during the holiday, plus information on an exciting new health tech startup that wants to change the menopause narrative. Spend Your Energy Wildly is the topic for Part 6, the final episode in our six-part book series. Gladys' teaching is that living well is a matter of learning how to steer your energy toward life. I recap the previous five lessons and illustrate how to receive the lessons and love from each moment. I share client stories and moments from my own life tied to the choice of expanding your energy wildly vs. wisely. I end the episode with Gladys' six-part practice on how to embrace and appreciate the gift of life. Gladys shares the decision to stop fighting at school in order to make connections. She had to redirect the energy and unconscious patterns created in her family with intention and purpose. We all have sovereignty over our energy. I share a moment from my life when my husband and I were inspired by families in our church to adopt children of our own. I discovered the capacity of both my light and darkness while raising five children, but I had the agency to expand and move toward light energy. I also illustrate Gladys' practice on how to embrace life with a series of questions for inquiry so life can grow and expand with you. Can you feel life's boundless energy moving throughout your body? This message is a reminder to embrace the wildness of life around you. Listen in to learn Glady's teachings as a stepping stone on the journey to a life well-lived. Thank you for joining me for this six-part series. I am honored to be with you. Please reach out. Thank you for joining me last week for Part 3 of my Six-Part Book Chat series. In this episode, we dive into Part 4 of the book around the topic that you are never truly alone. I share a framework for both soul and social connection and illustrate concepts from Gladys around the power of listening and embracing imperfection. I end the episode with Gladys' five-step practice for weaving the fabric of life together. At a recent Biohacking Congress, I had a conversation with someone built on mutual vulnerability. At that moment, I wasn't there to do most of the talking. I was there to simply listen. I share the need for both social and soul connections and two studies from Gladys' book on loneliness and adult development. In her book, Gladys writes about embracing imperfection. I detail how the birth of my 2nd grandchild was a chaotic, but incredibly powerful and connected time. I also share how living in proximity allows for more intimate connections to happen, and a story about my move to Chicago after living abroad. When we align with community, our life force is fueled. Thank you for joining me last week for Part 2 of my Six-Part Book Chat series. In this episode, we dive into Part 3 of the book where Gladys writes that love is more powerful than any medicine you can take. I share personal stories about love from my own upbringing and the greatest unconditional love story ever told. I end the episode with Gladys' Love Yourself Into Healing visualization practice to give space for love to trickle in. My “head start” in life wasn't in a wealthy or influential family. It was in love. When I experienced a family crisis while a freshman in college, I still knew that I was loved and valued. Even in feelings of loneliness, the love remained. I share the greatest love story ever told, Jesus, as a true model of unconditional love and our connection to Divine Source energy. Gladys writes that the power of love is undervalued and overlooked. Love has guided my own life, toward self-forgiveness and in release of rage. To illustrate the vibration of love, I tell Gladys' story about the Carlsbad Caves and how one small light can dispel the darkness. Love is what can breathe life into any emotionally helpless situation. I share Gladys' Love Yourself Into Healing visualization practice in honor of embracing the journey toward love. There is transformation when we can get quiet, listen, and be compassionate with ourselves. This is where we have dominion and power. Listen in to learn more about the wisdom and insight Gladys has to share with us. Let love be the trickle to guide you along the journey of life. Check in with your heart. After the data was compiled, it was revealed that the group who included MCT oil lost more weight, eliminated more body fat, and experienced higher levels of satiety. Again, same calorie-restricted diet, but adding in the MCTs led to more fat loss. Another study, this was cited in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders as well as a separate study. And this revealed that MCTs are able to boost oxidation of stored fat while increasing our satiety at the same time, so burning fat while we're still feeling satisfied. Now here's why this matters. The study also noted that MCTs enabled study participants to retain more of their muscle mass during the weight loss process. So this was supportive of not just weight loss but actual fat loss and retention of our lean tissue. There's something special about MCT oil, but as with everything today, the sourcing is critically important. This is pretty much a daily thing for me, having some MCT oil included somewhere in my nutrition protocol, whether it's blended into a tea or coffee or a smoothie or a salad dressing, there are so many different ways to utilize MCTs, but where you get it from truly does matter. We have to make sure that we're getting our MCT oil from companies that have integrity, that have high-quality sourcing, and also avoiding a lot of toxicants that come along with a lot of supplements today. For my MCT oil, I'm getting it from Onnit. Onnit is a premier human-performance company. And when you go to onnit.com/model, you get 10% off their incredible MCT oil. That's onnit.com/model, you get 10% off their MCT oil and all of their health and human-performance supplements and foods. All right? Huge fan of Onnit, it's a staple in my superfood cabinet. Head over there, check them out, onnit.com/model for 10% off. This episode is brought to you by HVMN. I wanna share something with you that has been fueling my workouts recently. Numerous studies, including a study published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, AKA, the FASEB Journal, have found that exogenous ketones can be up to 28% more efficient in generating energy than glucose alone, and because of this, something that... Listen, there are so many different supplements that are out there on the market, very few things do you experience a change the first day. Now, this isn't true for everybody, but for me, this was the case, I was shocked. I actually took time stepping away from everything else that I was doing as far as supplementation around training, gave myself a break, and then did this with a lot of focus and intention to see, Hey, what are the kind of results that I could see by utilizing Ketone-IQ? And I was really just blown away. My stamina was significantly increased, but more so, my recovery afterwards, it was really impressive. I just felt like I could do so much more than I normally do. And I'm somebody who really prides myself on being a high performer and being able to really challenge my limits and do exceptional things. And so to do what I was typically doing and then have energy left in the tank, I was just like, "Wow, this is something special, I need to tell more people about this." So right now, you can head over to hvmn.com/model, and they're going to give you 30% off of your first subscription order, it'll be taken off automatically at checkout. And I'm telling you, this is the real deal. Go to hvmn.com/model, check out Ketone-IQ today. This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley. I've got some very bad news for you about vitamin C supplements. Most people have no idea that typical vitamin C supplements are made from corn syrup or corn starch derived from GMO crops. The synthetic ascorbic acid found in most vitamin C supplements is structurally similar to naturally-derived whole-food sources of vitamin C, but they are not the same thing. Whole food and whole-food concentrates of vitamin C have hundreds of other bioactive cofactors that make vitamin C work miraculously in our bodies, while synthetic vitamin C is the very definition of a one-trick pony. In fact, by being devoid of essential cofactors, synthetic vitamin C supplements can be outright harmful to your health. For instance, a 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine found that participants taking synthetic vitamin C supplements had twice the risk of developing kidney stones. Another study, the researchers at USC found that a daily dose of synthetic vitamin C thickened the walls of participants' arteries two and a half times faster than those not taking the synthetic supplement. This is absolutely insane because, number one, it's one of the most popular standalone supplements in the world and commonly found in most multivitamins. Number two, whole-food based, whole-food concentrates of real vitamin C are remarkably effective in lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, even in people engaged in high-risk behaviors like smoking. A randomized placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Cardiology had 20 smokers consume a whole-food concentrated vitamin C in the form of camu camu berry over the course of a one-week study. And it led to significantly lowered oxidative stress and lowered inflammatory biomarkers. What's more? There were no changes in these markers in the placebo group who received an ordinary synthetic vitamin C supplement. Because of the damage humans have done to the soil microbiome, levels of vitamin C are notably lower in typical foods. That's why I have been utilizing a whole-food vitamin C concentrate blend of camu camu berry, acerola cherry, and amla berry for years, and I'm on a mission to spread awareness about this and get people off synthetic vitamin C supplements. The essential C complex from Paleovalley is all organic, no synthetic ingredients and no fillers, plus it has a 60-day 100% moneyback guarantee, so if you aren't absolutely thrilled with it, you'll receive a full refund, no questions asked. Go to paleovalley.com/model right now and you'll automatically receive 15% off of your order at checkout. Vitamin C is critical for our immune system health but also the health of our heart, our brain, our skin and so much more. Target organic whole-food sources of vitamin C, and if you're going to supplement, make sure it's a whole food concentrate and not synthetic vitamin C. Go to paleovalley.com/model, that's paleovalley.com/model right now for 15% off.
Thank you for joining me last week for Part One of my Six-Part Book Chat series. In this episode, we dive into Part 2 of the book where Gladys writes about “the trickle” and three hindrances to confront in order to realign with life. I share how emotional pain is related to forgiveness and shame and the ways it can hold us hostage from our fullest range of life force energy. I end the episode with Gladys' movement practice for letting go and turning our attention back to love. During my marriage crisis, I aligned with the energy of my family to see the trickle moving through the flow of life and our commitment to our children. When we're in pain, we tend to stop moving, but in reality, movement is the solution to keep our energy system flowing. I share Gladys' specific practice with hand gestures to deal with blockages and alleviate emotional pain. In order to navigate the pain and find the trickle, we must move something in our life. For a true release in support of your life force, I share Gladys' process for letting go and letting energy flow. I recently used this process to work out my feelings about the U.S. medical system. I stretched, I danced, I pounded, I jumped — and I felt amazing. Listen in to learn more about the wisdom and insight Gladys has to share with us. Let movement guide and revitalize your life force energy. Is there something in your life that's asking to be moved? Thank you for joining me for part one of my Five-Part Book Chat series. In this episode, I share excerpts from Gladys about topics including longevity, the body's service to the soul, the feminine emotional compass, and looking at health from a whole-body, functional lens. I also share stories and experiences from my own life that have given me an understanding of how to live within our soul's purpose, filled with compassion, kindness, and patience. I have always believed that our health is deeper than the physical body, which is why I love the whole-body, functional medicine lens so much. Everything is woven together and connected to and through us, from the inside out. When the electrical conduction of my heart burned out, I learned how every experience teaches you something along the way. When things get messy and chaotic, Gladys calls it “turning towards life,” a time to find our life force and access our “juice.” I also share how I was recommended to go the pharmaceutical route during my health crisis and how all areas of our lives must be taken into consideration. For a life filled with true vitality and longevity, I illustrate Gladys' six-step system filled with wisdom for taking slow, gradual steps toward finding your juice. Listen in to learn more about the wisdom and insight Gladys has to share with us. What did you discover this week about your juice? I would love to hear from you. In today's postmodern digital age, the energies are moving rapidly. Are you feeling the speeding up of time? In this episode, I'm recording solo, sharing my reflections on the world's emotional state, followed by a guided meditation. Meditation is the act of purposefully guiding our attention to an internal still point to quiet the mind. Harmony happens when the mind is brought to a still point of focus — I believe it's one of the most valuable tools of our time. There is a groundswell of change in our world, and you may feel as if resolution is out of reach. But I'm here to share with you that everything is solvable. One of the 7 Pillars of the Growing Older Living Younger Roadmap is based in community and connection. There is a fundamental need within all of us, to be part of a social group. Loneliness and isolation lead to greater levels of anxiety and depression, and loneliness is known to lead to age-associated problems such as obesity, high blood pressure. Today I talk about relationships and how they may change as we grow older, with Relationship Capital Consultant, Barbara Cole Salmeron, who helps men and women decode the mysteries of the opposite sex so they can heal relationship conflicts at home, at work, and in romance! Barbara is the creator of the Relationship Harmony Masterclass Series. She a is offering a gift of a free masterclass on the Top 5 Secrets to Relationship Success. Welcome back to this special end of year, Boxing Day episode of Growing Older Living Younger. Aging is inevitable. Aging in poor health is not. The theme of today's episode is changing aging. Although we inherit our intrinsic genetic DNA blueprint from our parents, over our lifetime, extrinsic factors modify how our genes are expressed - the science of switching genes on and off, is known as epigenetics. Although we start life with the genetic blueprint from our parents, over time through myriads of extrinsic forces combined with the lifestyle choices we make and habits we practice, we are the contractor who shapes our intrinsic blueprint to construct the person we become. The overarching goal of this podcast, my book, and the Growing Older Living Younger program is to show you how small changes in lifestyle and habits can have a big impact on your health and vitality as you age. As I relate in my book, during the process of recovery and rehabilitation from spinal surgery, I realized that I needed to reevaluate the way I was living, to change the downward trajectory of my aging so that I would extend my health span - the length of lifespan that I would remain in optimal health. My goal became to minimize the so called aging-associated disorders, to stay mentally and physically active, vibrant and joyful, metaphorically dancing till the end of life.Over time and deep diving into health and aging research, I evolved my unique personal Roadmap for Growing Older Living Younger. Within the 7 Fundamental Pillars I designed specific strategies designed to promote my health, minimize aging effects and counteract ageism.Growing Older Living Younger: The Science of Aging Gracefully and The Art of Retiring Comfortably, was published a month before my 76th birthday, the same time that I launched this Growing Older Living Younger podcast, to bring you the stories and the wisdom of experts in the 7 fundamental areas of aging well.In reviewing the lineup of interviews, I looked at whether these diverse conversations led me to make changes in the design and details of my Road Map. 2022 kicked off with the first of 12 episodes that focused on nutrition, what, when and how we eat. We discussed how our understanding of Vitamin D requirements has changed and the key roles Vitamin D plays in our health. Subsequent podcasts discussed time restricted eating or intermittent fasting, dieting versus intuitive eating, tissues around plant-based diet and toxins in so-called superfoods and gluten in our foods. There were episodes about various aspects of mindset, the way in which we think about aspects of our lives from personal and communal relationships, how leaving a legacy, approaching retirement, and persisting till success happens. Several episodes looked at various aspects of aging such as technology to assist or monitor aging, ageism and how we respond to it, and creating appropriate living and social environments. With respect to aging and the body, episodes focused on eye disease specifically glaucoma, prostate health, skin health, hair loss and approaches to self healing. We discussed maintaining cognitive skills and delaying dementia through brain training and dance, and adequate sleepAs I reflect on these conversations, most of the recommendations and takeaway messages aligned well with the details of my personal Road Map which I outline in this podcast. As an ongoing challenge and to expand my network and community I have my entrepreneurial wellness and anti-aging business, my weekly podcast and have started the Growing Older Living Younger Community. When I looked back at my family health history I wish I had paid more attention to prevention in my earlier years. It makes me think that a second version of my upcoming program, Reset Your Aging Blueprint, which was planned for the 50 + age group, should be offered for the 30 to 50 year old cohort since we know for example, that the ground work for later development of osteoporosis is laid down in the peri-menopausal period. By changing our nutritional lifestyle early we could avoid the middle aged spread and later obesity and other related disorders. Through my book, this podcast, my guest appearances on other shows, and the Growing Older Living Younger Private Community, I hope to get the message out that our genes need not define our destiny. While there may be aspects of our health that we cannot change, there are many things that we can influence by the choices we make and the habits we can put into practice. I have found ways that work for me to help me grow older gracefully and joyfully. I would love to help you find your personal roadmaps to living younger longer. To discover how to Reset Your Aging Blueprint and create your own roadmap to living younger as you grow older, you can schedule a free Discovery Call with me or email me at askdrgill@gmail.com. While we know that health affects longevity and quality of life, it can be difficult to change bad habits. People often try to make sweeping New Year's resolutions, only to fail.In fact, Jan. 17 is the date that the average America breaks their New Year's resolution.Dr. Stephen Kopecky, a Mayo Clinic preventive cardiologist, says a better approach is to focus on small steps that add up over time."The answer, I think, is to make small, sustainable steps that you can live with," says Dr. Kopecky "And when I say small steps, like for diet, I tell patients one bite, one bite of something healthy. Take some processed meat or foods off your plate, and put on something like a legume or a bean. After a couple of years, that one-bite difference will lower your risk of having a heart attack."In his book, "Live Younger Longer: 6 Steps to Prevent Heart Disease, Cancer, Alzheimer's and More," Dr. Kopecky shares strategies for making changes, including thinking of a compass of habits: N — Nutrition E — Exercise W — Weight S — Sleep, stress, smoking and spirits (alcohol) Healthy eatingEating lots of fruits and vegetables provides antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients that help the immune system fight infections. Dr. Kopecky recommends fruits, vegetables and healthy fats from olive oil and nuts, all found in the Mediterranean diet. ExercisingRegular moderate exercise increases the activity of virus-killing immune cells.“Exercise has been shown to give the immune system a boost by maximizing the body's ability to take in and efficiently use oxygen, among other things,” says Dr. Kopecky. “Moderate exercise, where you can talk but not sing while exercising, is enough to increase the activity of virus-killing cells both in the short term and long term. Even 20 minutes daily can help quell inflammation and boost immunity, and exercise can be divided up during the day. The best part about exercise is that it can be done anywhere. Leg lunges, sit-ups, squats and stair-climbing are all easy exercises you can do at home."Managing stress Calming activities and supportive relationships minimize stress, reduce cortisol production and enhance the immune system's function. "Concern about the health of our loved ones, our jobs, children's schooling and other stressors will cause an increased production of the hormone cortisol in the body, which in turn can suppress the immune system," says Dr. Kopecky. "Practicing mindfulness and stepping away from what's causing anxiety can help us stay grounded. Exercises that have calming or meditative qualities, such as qi gong and yoga, also are beneficial."Getting enough sleepAdequate sleep boosts the number of immune cells circulating in the body and improves infection outcomes. The interaction between the immune system and sleep is a two-way street. "When your immune system response kicks in, it changes your sleep,” explains Dr. Kopecky. “You may find yourself sleeping longer, for example, as your immune system stages an attack against a virus. When you're not sleeping well, you may notice that you get sick more easily. Getting adequate sleep can help support the way your immune system functions by increasing the number of immune cells circulating in your body." Making positive changes in these areas can help improve health and longevity."We cannot prevent aging. We can slow aging," says Dr. Kopecky. "But we can prevent disease. It's certainly possible to do. And if you adopt a certain healthy lifestyle, you can affect that."On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Kopecky discusses developing healthy habits one small step at a time.

I almost wasn't smart enough to have this conversation but I just managed to hang on by the skin of my metaphoric teeth. Dr Norman Swan, trained in paediatrics, was one of the first medically qualified journalists in Australia, with a broadcast career spanning more than 30 years. He currently hosts Radio National's ‘The Health Report' and co-hosts ‘Coronacast', which has 2.6 million monthly downloads. He also reports on the ABC TV's 7.30, is a guest reporter on ‘Four Corners'; appears on ‘The Drum' and is an occasional host of Radio National Breakfast. His last book ‘So You Think You Know What's Good for You?' became a bestseller in 2021 and his latest book ‘So You Want to Live Younger Longer' is flying off the shelves (both physical and virtual). In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I caught up with Dr. Dan Vitale, who is a chiropractic clinician and longevity expert. Dan was the co-author of my book which is now available electronically. This episode we summarized the main concepts we discussed in the book. We chatted about the Five Pillar Methodology for optimizing mobility and joint function for the long-term. We discussed the key principles of cardiovascular training to maintain a healthy heart as you age. Dan and I detailed the core concepts of building long-term functional strength and muscle mass reserve. We talked about how to develop a nutrition strategy that will allow you to live for as long as possible. We also outlined the key habits for improving mood and preventing cognitive decline. Lastly, we discussed the concept and practical methods of biohacking that help support healthspan extension. Dr. Dan Vitale graduated from York University with a Specialized Honours in Kinesiology and Health Sciences. He earned his Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He has also studied various soft-tissue techniques including Graston Technique and Active Release Technique (ART). Don't we all want to live longer, healthier, and feel younger? Most of us think of growing older as feeling less energetic, having more health issues, and having wrinkles. We blame our genes for creating all these negative characteristics. Wouldn't it be nice to stop all these conditions and reverse them so we enjoy our new chapter in life? Today, I'm talking to a medical professor and specialist who experienced all these age-related problems and was not happy about their impact on her life. After she recovered from a critical emergency spinal surgery she began exploring the integration of epigenetic science with myriad ancient and non-traditional wellness systems. This changed her perspective on growing older in a way that she adjusted her lifestyle and habits in 7 different areas of her life to live healthier. More importantly, adding time to the healthspan a person's life will bring more joy and vitality. Listen to my conversation with guest Dr. Gillian Lockitch to hear how small changes can program your lifestyle for health and longevity, and which key factors that influence the aging process can be altered. Don't miss this episode if you want to defeat growing older symptoms and instead live younger longer.
“You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old” (George Burns) “I Won't retire till they bury me.“ (Gary Rogers) Today's guest, Gary Rogers, exemplifies one who is “older but not old”. I met Gary at an online networking event about a year ago. I was so struck by his energy and vitality, that I took him up on his offer of a free master class on presentation skills. It was only much later that I learned Gary's chronological age, and realized that he is the epitome of one who is Growing Older, but Living Younger. Gary Rogers is the founder and CEO of CompanyFlix, an international Communications company. He has been a professional speaker and an executive in the television production/motion picture industry for over 5 decades. A former Training Manager with 3M Company, Gary started teaching Public Speaking and Presentation Skills 50 years ago. In his production career he has had the opportunity to direct many Hollywood stars, including Academy Award-winning actor, Charlton Heston. Using revolutionary new video technology, Gary continues to provide exceptional Public Speaking and Presentation Skills training and his teaching and training is second to none. Our conversation ranges from how Gary's transition from a top salesman to training others how to sell, ultimately led to his career as a speaker/producer/director, and now to his current passion for helping others succeed at presentation skills and sales. Although many of his current students are seniors, Gary does not see that they have any more challenges with developing their speaking skills than other age cohorts. Working with students of all ages, keeps Gary living young! Gary is happy to offer you a gift of his free Masterclass. "The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm. (Aldous Huxley) I would add "never lose the enthusiasm, the curiosity about the world and the fearlessness of childhood". The message from today's guest is that while we stay youthful and vibrant as we grow older, we must celebrate ourselves along the journey. It was delightful to meet my guest, Christina Martel, at a virtual networking event where she and I were both featured speakers on the theme of Living Younger. We share a common interest in combating ageism, and in encouraging our contemporaries to value and celebrate their wisdom accumulated through life experience. Christina is the Founder of Celebrating Silver, an alliance of women in their prime, reclaiming their right to be truly seen and heard, without judgement and to contribute to the workforce should they choose to do so. ROARR, the acronym for the Celebrate Silver tag line - Reclaim Older Adult Rights and Respect, says it all. In my book Growing Older, Living Younger, the Science of Aging Gracefully and the Art of Retiring Comfortably, I describe my personal roadmap for aging well, based on seven foundational pillars. Today I talk about the fifth foundational pillar. I call Pillar Five You Are Not Alone, and it focuses on Connection. As I was reflecting on living alone, loneliness, and the potential adverse consequences for mental and also physical health, I was grateful for the insights that had earlier led me to prepare myself to avoid the dangers of isolation. 2016 data from Canada and the USA showed that single person households were becoming more prevalent and that millions of people were living alone. Social isolation is a major risk factor for mental and physical adverse effects. This has been even more evident with the isolation of the pandemic. Connection and community is key to healthy aging. 'Life is a journey that must be travelled, no matter how bad the roads and the accommodations' . (Oliver Goldsmith) 'I found my personal roadmap to healthy aging; together we can find yours'. (Gillian Lockitch ) In this episode, in response to those who asked to hear the story underlying the Growing Older Living Younger book and podcast , I talk about the series of traumas that left me in a dark unhealthy place and of the pivotal 'light bulb' movements that altered the trajectory and the mission of my life. To reach your destination you need to know where you want to go but also, the best way to get there. The 7 Pillars of my roadmap can help you find better roads and healthier accommodations. Discover what you want to achieve and believe you can do it. The "common disorders of aging' are really disorders of unhealthy aging. Aim to extend your healthspan, not just your lifespan. Telomeres are the caps at the end of each strand of DNA that protect our chromosomes, like the plastic tips at the end of shoelaces. Without the coating, shoelaces become frayed until they can no longer do their job, just as without telomeres, DNA strands become damaged and our cells can't do their job. This episode is based on the book "The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer", which details ground breaking evidence on the history of Telomeres and offering fresh advice on how to slow down aging and lengthen life. Nobel prize winning Doctor Elizabeth Blackburn and leading health psychologist Dr Elissa Epel have discovered biological markers called Telomeres which can help to understand how healthy our cells are and what we can do to improve them. Based on research from the authors and other population based research, Dr. K discusses 7 natural ways to protect and possible regenerate healthy telomers through: Physical exercise Meditation Controlling stress Sleeping well Eating a balanced-anti-inflammatory healthy diet Having purpose, doing what you love. Having loving relationships and gratitude Things that speed telomere shortening and premature aging include: Physiological and oxidative stress Chronic disease and illness Sedentary lifestyle Obesity Environmental toxins and pollutants UV radiation Smoking Poor lifestyle habits There are many natural ways naturally that you can impact your telomere length ..to age gracefully and to ultimately improve your overall psychological and biological health and boost longevity and vitality. It's not so much living longer its living well that is most important. Show links: designandwellness.com Join private facebook group at : https://www.facebook.com/groups/153651943307031/

In this episode, we speak about what it means to change aging at the cellular level and the foundational pillars for people to create their roadmap to healthy aging.
"The choices you make, your thoughts, what you eat, how you move, how you interact with others, can change your aging at the cellular level.' (Gillian Lockitch) Welcome to Growing Older, Living Younger (GOLY), the podcast where you will discover ways to boost your metabolism, enhance your mental and physical energy, and ward off disorders we wrongly think are inevitable as we age. Your host, Dr. Gillian Lockitch, evolved her personal road map to aging youthfully during her rehabilitation from emergency spinal surgery following a series of catastrophic life events . After leaving her 25 year career as a specialist in Medical Biochemistry, professor, researcher and international speaker, she began to explore ways in which the burgeoning field of epigenetic (gene expression) science could intersect with ancient, non-western wellness practices to extend our health span rather than just our lifespan. Her personal journey, described in her book, Growing Older, Living Younger: The Science of Aging Gracefully and The Art of Retiring Comfortably, reveals the 7 foundational pillars on which the GOLY Project is founded. Tune in weekly to hear from experts and practitioners in mental and physical health, fitness, nutrition, personal care, entrepreneurship, community and networking, to help you create your personal roadmap to aging youthfully.
