Lying Beside You is Michael's 17th novel, the third in his Cyrus Haven and Evie Cormac series and it's honestly a masterclass in how to write a psychological crime thriller. We talked about the difference between creating surprise and suspense, a couple of Michael's favourite mantras he applies to his writing, finding new ways to describe the same characters after 9 novels in a series and how to balance how much information you give away in each book in a series. Other topics include writing believable dialogue, creating memorable characters that we care about, the importance of adding a little humour in a psychological thriller and subverting the reader's expectations.*SPOILERS* There are spoilers in this episode so if you haven't yet read the novel and you hate spoilers, make sure you read the book before listening. You'll find links to buy both paperback and ebook versions of Lying Beside You here.ABOUT MICHAEL ROBOTHAMBefore becoming a novelist, Michael Robotham was a former feature writer and investigative reporter working in Britain, Australia and America, and with clinical and forensic psychologists as they helped police investigate complex, psychologically driven crimes. Hey, Everyone! It's time once again for everyone's favorite podcast episode: We Review the Reviews! This week, we review the reviews of "Forgotten in Death" and there are some really crappy reviews for this one! We actually start off a bit differently than normal by talking about a horrible review that Nora got on her own blog on a post that publicist Laura created for discussion of "Forgotten." Click here for the link to see all the awfulness. I mean...calm down, Jan! UPDATE...we didn't look at the actual thread when we talked about this comment, so we didn't see that after Nora ripped Jan a new one, Jan actually did apologize! So, good job, Jan! After that, there are just a TON of "is Nora even writing these anymore?" comments, some comments about Nora putting her own politics into the books, and only one about the boring, yet passionate sex. Also, the weirdest review we have ever read. We have someone who felt there wasn't enough interaction with "Summerfield" and someone "disappointed, almost cheated." To which Jen said: "Good Job, Pooping!" Which seems appropriate since most of these reviews are crap. As usual, there's the obligatory Susan Ericksen review that got AJ pissed off, but one sensible person who says "Susan Ericksen's audio never fails. WOW!" Look people: Susan Ericksen's Roarke voice is pretty spot on, but don't take my word for it, watch this promotional video for the series "Leonardo" that Aidan Turner starred in where he is interviewed, and listen to his accent. He sounds Irish about 50% of the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPA2d3F6XuQ Also, Jen is a bit perturbed that none of the reviews mention Jake's ass. WE NEED YOUR HELP FOR NEXT WEEK'S SHOW! Give us your Top 10 Scary or Spooky moments in the "In Death" Series! Durning the last part of the show, we discuss how AO3 seems to be progressing with the importing of the InDeath.net fan fics, and the first part of our collection has been imported and is ready for reading! For right now, they are hidden from public view, but if you have an AO3 account, you can see them. They should be unlocked and ready for public view sometime in early November. Hey Everyone! This week, we're bringing you the second of three "Podcast in Death Outtakes" Episodes! If you listen to this show for any length of time, you know that we are all HUGE fangirls, whether it is for this particular series, or other fandoms, and we fangirl a LOT on this show. So, this episode, you will hear all the times we fangirled, but all of it got cut out. First, a discussion of bad Fancasting picks (FYI, just because the book series is 25 years old, doesn't mean the characters have aged 25 years, so it doesn't make sense to cast someone in their forties for Peabody), bad fandoms (fighting among fandoms is typical and full of crazy people.) and bad fan fiction (please don't write fan fic with sexual encounters between Roarke and other male characters from the "In Death" series...). We also discuss the "Mortified" podcast, and their hilarious Harry Potter Fan Fiction Episode. During the Fancasting episode, AJ told a story of going to a ComiCon a few years ago and going to see the "Riverdale" panel with some friends. It was slightly weird that they were fangirling over Cole Sprouse, but, some good photos came out of that ComiCon... AJ also shares an unpopular opinion about Jason Momoa. Next we talk about comfort reads. AJ reads mostly romance novels because they are her comfort reads. We all feel like you should read what you enjoy, no matter what it is. Taking book suggestions from other people is fine, but don't feel obligated to read them if you aren't enjoying it. Jen and Tara discuss "Hunger Games," and how Jen enjoyed the books, but Tara had mixed feelings about them. We also talk about Harry Potter fandom, and if you are a Harry Potter fan and haven't yet listened to "Basic Snitches,"  you should. Next we talk about how awful some men in fandoms are. Just a hint to guys in fandoms: women don't need their fandoms "mansplained" to them. If a woman directly asks you a question or asks for your opinion, please do answer, but if you are not directly asked for your opinion, please try to say as little as possible. We say this fully knowing that AJ has a problem keeping her own opinions to herself, so... AJ gives everyone an internet "pro tip" about the Wayback Machine from Archive.org. You can use this tool to find archives of just about any website that has ever been on the internet. AJ demonstrates this by showing Jen and Tara an archive of her now defunct website for Dougray Scott. Next we talk about how, just like Peabody, where she thinks about how she would really like to be very into the kind of stuff Charles is into, but she is not, we are also not into stuff like opera or concerts in the park. Then we talk about going to concerts and Jen talks about how she has seen Harry Connick Jr. in concert 8 times. Tara has seen "Hard Days Night," a Beatles tribute band group 6 times, and she actually snuck out of her own Jr. Banquet to see "Rain," another Beatles tribute band. The only band that AJ has seen that many times is a little known celtic rock band called "Brother." We end the episode with a little fangirling over Susan Ericksen.
