The trial of teenage murderer Alice Mitchell was an all out spectacle. After killing her former lover Freda Ward in a crime of passion, no one seemed to believe her motivation –least of all her own defense team. She'd end up pleading present insanity under the counsel of men who couldn't even begin to comprehend any deviation from the sexual and gendered norms of the late 19th century. In the second half of our pride series on Alice Mitchell and Freda Ward, we'll cover what happened to Alice in the wake of Freda's murder and how their story got warped by the time and place in which they lived. Lucy Worsley travels back in time to revisit the unthinkable crimes of 19th century murderesses from the UK, Australia and North America. In this episode Lucy is joined by Cameron Esposito, stand-up comic, actor, writer and host of the hit podcast Queery. They investigate the case of 19-year-old Alice Mitchell who killed 17-year-old Freda Ward in Memphis, Tennessee in 1892 after a stormy and illicit relationship. Alice and Freda plan to marry and move to St Louis, but when Freda's family discover their relationship, she comes under enormous pressure to end it.Alice Mitchell's subsequent actions caused a nationwide sensation and influenced the way lesbians were perceived by the press and the public for decades. Lucy is also joined by the historian Alexis Coe, author of Alice + Freda Forever: A Murder in Memphis, who helps Lucy uncover exactly what drove Alice to kill the woman she loved.Lucy wants to know what this case tells us about women's lives in the southern states of America at the end of the 19th century, particularly the lives of LGBTQ+ women, and what it tells us about queer women's lives in America now. Today in Tennessee the LGBTQ+ community feels under increasing threat with legislation banning books in schools which portray gay or trans people and bans on drag acts. Lucy asks the drag artist and activist Magical Miss Mothie to find out more from members of the community during their annual Pride festival in the city. The story of Alice and Freda is complex and disturbing, and it culminates in the destruction of two young lives. But it reminds us that queer people have always been there and always will be; in the teeth of opposition from everyone around her Alice refused to see why she should not live her life with the woman she loved.Produced in partnership with the Open UniversityProducer: Jane Greenwood Readers: Clare Corbett, Bill Hope and Laurel Lefkow Sound design: Chris Maclean Series Producer: Julia Hayball Executive Producer: Kirsty HunterA StoryHunter production for BBC Radio 4New episodes will be released on Wednesday wherever you get your podcasts. It’s February 5, 1907, and a short, dark haired man in his late thirties named Corporal O’Halloran is on the doorstep of a house on Edward Street in the city of Perth. He has been called there by the owner, a woman named Alice Mitchell.  Alice Mitchell is known to care for babies. Specifically, babies belonging to single parents, who have no choice but to return to work and earn a living. She has cared for dozens over the last six or so years. But she’s called Corporal O’Halloran there because she’s caring for a baby whose mother has disappeared. She is no longer sending her money.  “I’ve been keeping her baby for months,” she tells the man. “And I’ve received nothing from her. I keep them for a living,” she continues, referring to the babies. “I don’t keep them for the love of the thing. Her child wants nourishment and I’m unable to give it to her unless she pays me.” Corporal O’Halloran asks to see the child.  He watches Alice walk down her lino-covered hallway and collect a baby from one of the bedrooms. The infant is wrapped in a thin blanket, wearing a soiled cloth nappy. He notices the baby is pale, with her eyes inflamed. She is seriously underweight, emaciated, and limp, and the policeman notices a sickly smell coming from her. He grows concerned.  Alice says the baby is suffering from teething. And marasmus, a form of malnutrition.  O’Halloran is aware of the rumours. They’ve been following Alice for some time. But there’s never been a formal complaint, perhaps because of the shame so many single mothers feel.  What happened that day will start an investigation, as authorities look more closely at the home of Alice.  Where are so many of the babies she was meant to be caring for?    CREDITS Guest: Stella Budrikis - Author of 'The Edward St Baby Farm' Host: Jessie Stephens Audio Producer: Leah Porges Producer: Gia Moylan   CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode. Hey Mr. Wilson! This 90s update of the popular comic/cartoon isn't half bad! Writer John Hughes continued to draw from the "Home Alone" well with more kid vs. bad guy pranks. Yes, "Dennis the Menace" has a bad guy that isn't neighbor-next-door George Wilson. This movie has "Switchblade Sam," a totally creepy and marginally inappropriate bad guy for a PG-kids movie, but he's played by the always committed Christopher Lloyd. Great Scott, those teeth are nasty! Old Millennials Remember Movies hosts Tyler and Angela feel a bit bad for ol' George Wilson, played here by the incomparable grump Walter Matthau. His neighbors, the Mitchells, just let their FIVE YEAR OLD CHILD run around the neighborhood unsupervised, breaking into homes, messing with dangerous medications and household chemicals at every turn. "He's only a little boy," says everyone. Exactly! A little boy needs to be watched! Otherwise you're going to get a blob of paint/wood chips in your BBQ chicken. Dennis the Menace 1993 Podcast Silly pranks and semi-violent pratfalls take up much of the "Dennis the Menace" run time. Still, the movie stops every now and again to touch on some surprisingly thoughtful content, including the Wilsons' painful decision not to have kids, as well as Alice Mitchell's (Lea Thompson) struggle to be treated fairly at work. Also, Switchblade Sam has a switchblade! The Old Millennials discuss these topics, as well as the real world inspirations for the film's rare flower, "Home Alone" connections (Buzz returns!), the film's frustrating refusal to allow for a "Back to the Future" reunion, Natasha Lyonne sightings and the overlong climax that almost ends with a character getting the Darth Maul treatment! For elementary teachers approaching the topic of slavery, it can be tempting to focus only on heroes and avoid explaining oppression. But teachers’ omissions speak as loudly as what they choose to include. And what children learn in the early grades has broad consequences for the rest of their education. Dr. Kate Shuster guides us through the new Teaching Hard History K–5 framework from Teaching Tolerance. We also learn how four elementary teachers are beginning to use it in their classrooms.
