Erica stops in to celebrate Nosh-toberfest! Kevin Scoles & Natalie Cilurzo. Almanac Beer Company's Kevin Scoles and Natalie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Co. join Brew Ha Ha hosts Herlinda Heras and Harry Duke. Kevin is assistant director of sales at Almanac Brewing and Russian River Brewing Co. is a Brew Ha Ha sponsor. They begin with two Russian River Brewing Co. beers. Citra Flash Mob IPA is mostly Citra hop and was just canned this week. Blind Pig IPA is a classic west coast style, a clear beer about 6.4% ABV. Blind Pig is close to Vinny Cilurzo's original recipe started at his original brewery, Blind Pig Brewing Co. in Temecula, which he opened in 1994. Flow Pale Ale Almanac Beer Co. is introducing Flow Pale Ale, their new west coast style pale ale. Herlinda remembers tasting the third R&D batch. It's light bodied, with a clean finish. The Flow Fest on July 9 will be the premiere event. The brewery is located on the old Alameda Naval Air Station. Admiral Malting is their next-door neighbor. Their facility was built in 1938 entirely out of redwood. Their name comes from the Farmer's Almanac, which has been published since 1888. It was known as a history of weather patterns, for farmers. They want the brewery to represent agriculture and the local farmers who produce what goes into the beer, which also ties into their menu. Their motto is, “Beer is agriculture.” The brewery was founded in 2011 to apply farm-to-table principles with beer. They have been in their current facility for the last four years. Kolsch is one of their core beers, the fastest growing beer in their lineup. It is 5% ABV and he calls it their “Sunday lawn mowing beer.” It's a kind of cross between an ale and a lager. They have picnic tables inside and a large outdoor area and food trucks, and free parking. The outdoor space has been a life-saver for them during Covid. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. Pliny the Younger has a positive economic impact in Sonoma County due to the tourist traffic that it generates. Today Natalie describes some 2022 statistics that show increases that were reported in the Press-Democrat. The 6.1 million dollar impact is a 20% increase over last year. It includes spending on hotels, restaurants, etc. “It means a lot to us,” says Natalie. Kevin describes his journey into beer, which actually started in music. He worked for an guitar and accessory maker, the Ernie Ball company. As a home brewer, he knew he would enjoy working in the brewing business. He started in a distribution company and there, he got to know the two co-founders of Almanac Brewing. About a year ago he began working for them. They are tasting an Adambier, which is a German style, not very well known. It is a strong, dark lager originally from Dortmund. It is 6.7% ABV with a hint of tartness.

#64 John 7 & @almanacbeer Waves West Coast IPA - Jesus calls a timeout. John 7 finds Jesus in Judea for the Tabernacle ceremony, one of the annual Jewish holidays. Midway through the festival he was in the temple and preaching and the Jewish leaders (in typical form) were trying to find a way to arrest him for causing an uprising and going against their teachings. V. 31 says many among the crowd at the temple believed in him for the miracles he’d done. What were some of the miracles that Jesus had done by this point? Let's see: Turning the water into wine, Jesus heals the government officials son, Jesus heals the man who was sick for 38 years, Jesus feeds the 5000, Jesus walks on water, just to name a few… So here, Jesus performs many miracles in front of thousands of people, he's teaching & his knowledge surpasses the religious leaders, and they were jealous of his popularity with the crowds & upset at him going against their teachings of law, so they set out to arrest him but Jesus just casually calls a timeout. He’s going to be arrested and just calmly says, “not yet.” I love how Jesus just calls a “timeout” right when he's about to be arrested! Let's take a page from his playbook: in all the hustle & bustle in our daily lives, no matter what were being faced with, we can call a timeout too. A time out to reflect, a timeout to reach out to God, a timeout to have a cold beer like this crisp IPA from @almanacbeer Cheers to a great week everyone!! God bless!
Almanac Beer Co. wants to capture a specific place and time with every beer We last spoke with Almanac Beer Co. at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival in Denver*. Co-founder Jesse Friedman and (current) Brewmaster Phillip Emerson joined us just after collecting a silver medal for their White Label. As you might expect, everyone was in good spirits and we had a great conversation. Emerson joined us again to talk a bit more in depth and update us on their growth. Four years ago Almanac was a gypsy brewer, utilizing other breweries to brew their beer. In 2018 they opened an expansive barrel house and taproom in Alameda, CA. We talk with Emerson about his life before beer, the history of the brewery and its name, harnessing the power of science over time, farmer's markets, advancements in yeast, craft malt, and brewing with kveik. *Our 2016 interview with Almanac is available to our Patreon supporters as part of the BGR Vault. Season 3, Episode 4 – Does the shape and size of a glass really affect a beer’s characteristics? This week, we try to find out for ourselves. Does glassware make a difference when it comes to truly enjoying a craft beer? Glasses designed for more traditional beer styles have been around for a long time and it’s believed that they enhance certain characteristics of the beers that are consumed from them. Seasoned beer drinkers know that drinking a beer out of a glass is an overall better experience when compared to drinking straight from the bottle, even if it’s a standard “shaker” glass that brewers tend to despise. Well known beer establishments still serve beer in shaker glasses, despite the claims that the physical shape of the glass is doing a disservice to the beer inside of it. Style-Specific Beer Glassware Recently, beer glassware has reached a new level. IPA, stout, and even American wheat beers can now be served in style-specific glassware that supposedly enhances their qualities and nuances in certain ways. This week, we’re putting these glasses to the test. Disclaimer: all four of us on the show believe glassware affects beer perception. We tend to use the Libbey 3807 Belgian-style beer glass as our daily driver for consuming beer. Generally speaking, it’s a suitable glass for a wide variety of beers. Tattoo: Jesse Friedman of Almanac Beer Co. – NO SHAKER GLASSES This week, we’ve got four different glasses that were designed for four different beer styles: a pilsner glass, a hefeweizen glass, a stout glass, and an IPA glass. The manufacturers of each glass claim that they are designed to make the specific style of beer that’s inside the glass shine in different ways. Are the claims true? Is there a science to “proper” glassware? Perhaps (of course there is…)! BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 2, Episode 47 – This week we’re hanging out with Jesse Friedman, co-owner and brewer at San Francisco’s Almanac Beer Co., and we’re drinking some really special stuff. This week we are joined once again by our good friend Jesse Friedman, co-owner and brewer at Almanac Beer Co. in San Fransisco, California, and we’re drinking some really interesting stuff that encompasses the worlds of beer, wine, and spirits. Almanac Beer Co. Beers with Seven Stills Dogpatch Whiskey First up is the Almanac Dogpatch Sour. This beer is made with dried Rainier cherries and aged in red wine barrels for a number of months. The beer has a nice lactic tartness to it with the cherries giving it an extra fruity kick. Here’s something interesting. There is an undetectable amount of acetic acid in the beer, which we learned from Jesse is a good thing. Having a beer that is entirely lactic makes for a somewhat boring and overwhelmingly tart and thin beer. Almanac is by no means in the business of making vinegar bombs, but they’ve learned from others in the industry that acetic acid can also be your friend when it comes to making delicious sours. Almanac Beer Co. Dogpatch and Farmer’s Reserve Grand Cru The next couple of beers are really interesting. The Dogpatch Grand Cru is essentially a beefed up version the Dogpatch Sour, but with a couple of twists. Jesse walks us through exactly what goes into making this beer on the show, but we’ll try to sum it up here. It’s basically comprised of 30% red wine grapes, consisting of Zinfandel, Syrah, Tannat, Petite Syrah, and Tempranillo grapes. Two versions of the beer are aged in new French oak barrels and then blended back together to make the final product. This is not your typical sour ale. The red wine presence is quite big, making for a complex and satisfying experience. It’s pretty damn good. The Farmer’s Reserve Grand Cru goes through a similar production process, but instead of using a variety of red wine grapes, this beer uses Muscat grapes. This beer got a lot of different reactions from the room. In summary, it’s loaded with aromas of pineapple, lychee, mango, and even a hint of Nelson hops, even though Nelson wasn’t used to make this beer. The wine presence comes through really nice on the palate, just like the Dogpatch Grand Cru. Think of these beers as beer and wine hybrids. Almanac wasn’t subtle about it either. Jesse thinks the best thing about both of these beers is how they can divide a room and really get people talking about what they’re experiencing while drinking the beer. Mission accomplished. Seven Stills Dogpatch Whiskey We wrap up the show with a first for Four Brewers. We’re drinking some Dogpatch Whiskeyfrom Seven Stills, made in collaboration with Almanac. Seven Stills is known for making whiskey that is influenced by beer. Seven Stills is from the same neighborhood in San Fransisco as Almanac called “Dogpatch”, so this collaboration seemed natural. In order to make for a proper wash for distilling, Almanac brewed a version of Dogpatch Sour with wheat added to the grain bill and higher starting gravity that made for a higher post-fermentation alcohol level. After distillation, the whiskey was aged in used Dogpatch Sour barrels and then aged again in Dogpatch Sour Grand Cru barrels. This whiskey is cask strength, so you may want to add some water to cut down those fusel notes. Wood, cinnamon, vanilla, cotton candy, taffy, black pepper, caramel, and honey characteristics all come through on the aroma and palate. At $45-$50, this isn’t a cheap whiskey, but it’s unique and delicious. Seven Stills is on to something, here… So, thanks once again to Jesse for hanging out with us. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 1, Episode 12 - Co-founder of Almanac Beer Co., Jesse Friedman, joins us for a healthy dose of Almanac brews, gives insight on the company’s history, and their place in the craft beer world. This week, we’re drinking not one, not two, not three, but FOUR different Almanac beers.Jesse Friedman, co-founder of Almanac Beer Co., crashes the party via Google Hangouts to chat about his beer, get thrown a few softballs, and drink some Almanac brews with us. Almanac Beer Co., located in San Jose, CA, was founded in 2010, and has already made waves in the beer scene with their outstanding barrel-aged beers, ranging from bourbon porter, to sour blonde fruit ales. Founders Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan first met in their local homebrew club, where Jesse happened to sample a homebrew made by Damian that had the quality, taste, and presentation of a commercial beer. Jesse gets into this a bit more on the show, as well as what makes their brewery unique in its vision. Almanac Beer Co. – Episode 12 Beers The first beer on deck is Almanac’s Dark Pumpkin Sour, an ale aged in wine barrels and brewed with pumpkins and spices. The pumpkins are sourced from Bodega Bay in Sonoma County. The beer has a pleasant, soft tartness that really compliments the pumpkin and roasted malts quite well. Keeping on the pumpkin theme, the next beer we open is Almanac’s Heirloom Pumpkin Barleywine. Pumpkin beer season makes for a plethora of pumpkin ales and seems to get a bit convoluted, but Almanac’s barleywine really stands out. It’s a blended beer made with 500 pounds of hand-roasted pumpkins from La Tecera, California. If you haven’t caught on by now, Almanac is all about sourcing fruits and adjuncts for their beers from local California farmers, hence the “Farm to Barrel” theme printed on all of their bottles of beer. Next up, we open the Farmer’s Reserve Citrus. This sour ale is made with Buddha’s Hand citrons and Bergamot oranges, aged in red wine barrels, and is quite refreshing. Feature: “Guess That Brew!” Jesse, being a long time listener of Four Brewers, is no stranger to our little beer review game, “Guess That Brew.” But this time, we put a twist on it. All of the beer reviews we’re reading are Almanac beer reviews. Not to give anything away, but Jesse actually knows his beer pretty well… Jesse Friedman hanging out on Google While playing the game, we crack open our final beer from Almanac, Valley of the Heart’s Delight. Before Silicon Valley was known as such, it was called “the valley of the heart’s delight”, due to it’s sprawling fruit orchards. This sour ale pays tribute to its namesake with the addition of apricots, loquats, and cherries. It’s then aged in used wine barrels. All of the fruit in this beer was hand-picked by the Garden To Table non-profit from urban farms and privately-owned properties where the fruit resided. We’d like to thank Jesse for being so considerate as to guest on our show. Almanac is really making some great beers and has a unique take on their vision as a brewery. At the moment, they’re available in California, Washington, and Denver, so if you see their stuff on a shelf and you’ve never experienced their brew, buy it and enjoy. It's time for the annual Thanksgiving Science... sort of special! Each year the Paleopals pick an extra-long PaleoPOW and cover it in a little more detail than usual. Just like the pilgrims did. 00:00:00 - Patrick has an e-mail from Mike S. to start the show. Mike is in Rochester, and the people in Rochester are doing good work concerning cancer in blind mole rats. How do they compare to our official unofficial animal the naked mole rat? Tune in to find out! 00:13:35 - Drinks are a thing definitely worth giving thanks for. Patrick reaches for a Sofie from Goose Island, Ryan's knowledge of the brewery prompts Jacob to call him a snob. Jacob heads back to the old country to try and earn Ryan's respect with a Ayinger Ur-Weisse, but questions the descriptions posted on a certain beer website. Ryan is having a beer with few IBUs and the addition of fennel in the Spring 2012 Biere de Mars from Almanac Beer Co. It may have been a mistake. And Charlie enjoys Ninkasi winter seasonal Slayer to celebrate pagan traditions. 00:26:36 - Jacob brings us an e-mail from a serviceperson offering us some coin. We suggest that those serving in our armed forces instead donate to the USO or Cup of Joe for a Joe. Regardless, Jaimie K. wants to know about DNA replication buffers, which Patrick identifies as telomeres, and the morality of life imprisonment in a world without death, which no one has a good answer for. 00:42:24 - Trailer Trash Talk leaves everyone feeling nostalgic for power gloves yet ironically jaded towards movie previews thanks to the snippet from the upcoming disappointment Noobz. 00:58:09 - Ernie wants to know if birds suffer the same sleep deprivation that they force upon him. Ryan actually looks up real science to give him the answer. It's like the show is going legit or something. Until... 01:114:02 - Charlie ventures into the terrifying wilderness of our Facebook page to bring us a story from Clayton F. concerning the Oklohma Wildlife Department's stance concerning the existence of puma farms and bigfoot. Patrick points out the potential for bigfoot DNA from a wholly unreliable source. Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts!
