Episode #64 with Jill Smokler (Scary Mommy)What happens when two longtime, old school bloggers reminisce about the good old days of blogging? You get laughs, reflections, and a deep dive into the intricate dynamics of the blogging community from the early days to today. I'm joined by my friend and star blogger, Jill Smokler, founder of Scary Mommy, as we delve into our shared experiences of the blogging world and the friendships we made online "way back when."We discussed the thrill of the first comment, the pressure to produce daily content, and the intimate connections we made with readers and other bloggers. We covered meeting online friends in person, online friendships that drifted apart, and the jealousy and competition that sometimes entered the equation, Jill and I reflected on the significance of our blogging relationships, expressing gratitude for the friends we made along the way. Guest voice mails and emailsThank you to Andrea Scher, Deborah Gilboa, Ruchi Koval, and Rivki Silver for letting me use your thoughts in the episode. We think we know. We think we know what wonder means. We think we know who our partner is. We think there's nothing new to discover.” (Andrea) “finding our wonder inside of the messiness is exactly where we need to tend it most. This month, in the Mother's Quest Community, we've been celebrating the power of books. It made me think about this past episode with my mother Fran and her dear friend Sandy Klasky about their then 50 year old book club. This year, the book club will be turning 55 and is still going strong, even through the pandemic. Listen to this conversation, and you'll be inspired by the importance of friendship, the potential of books to bring people together, and the lessons we can learn from two grandmothers who have been through challenging times in our country and have lessons to share with us about what got them through. This episode is all about how seeking wonder can help you bother again and embracing the natural fallow period after you finish a big project. I'm joined by Andrea Scher, author of Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy, to talk about how to fill up your creative well when its run dry.. We talk about the power of mixing up your routines to try something new – going for a walk and finding a new plant, taking pictures, going to a new restaurant – as a way of sparking creativity and finding desire. Our brains react in fear to trying new things, to hanging out in the liminal space of venturing into the unknown, but it's when we put ourselves in those spaces that we grow. We also talk about how the pressure to monetize our creativity keeps us stuck not creating. Instead, what would it look like if you created without the expectation of making money, or “being creative”, or even getting better at what you create? What would it look like if you created for creativity's sake? Listen to the episode to learn: How to seek wonder in your everyday life How to find ambition and creativity as you age Why just being there in life is enough How to bother when it seems like your life is falling apart What Andrea and I's superpowers are Check out these resources: Andrea's podcast The Creative Superheroes, and look for me in a recent episode! “We need these manifestos. We need each other. And we need each other's stories.” — Graeme Seabrook For Season Seven, I'm excited to introduce our Throwback Thursdays segments! In honor of Mother's Quest turning 5 (such a great milestone!) we will be revisiting older episodes from the archives with messages that resonate more than ever. Whether you've heard the episode before, or its entirely new to you, I hope you find some treasures in these conversations that help you more fully live your E.P.I.C life. This Thursday, in honor of our Mother's Quest May Manifesto Challenge, I wanted to bring back this episode with Graeme Seabrook, known as “the Mom for Moms” which started the Challenge four years ago. Graeme bases her approach to coaching on the belief that you need to put yourself first in order for you to thrive. Following a traumatizing birth experience and postpartum depression with anxiety and PTSD, Graeme started her healing journey by teaching mothers and women to reclaim their humanity in a world and culture that expects women to be superhuman. Listen in as Graeme shares with us the disillusionment she experienced in her first months of motherhood, and how she reached out for support to reclaim her life, something she then paid forward by creating and holding space for other mothers. You'll also hear us lay out the inspiration for the Manifesto Challenge which has become an annual tradition. Unfortunately, Graeme has been ill over the last year. She's set up a GoFundMe to help fund her medical expenses. Proceeds from the Manifesto Challenge Course this month, now a self-guided journey with Reflection Journal, will go to Graeme's GoFundMe. After she has given so much to our community, we now have an opportunity to support her! Not up for the Manifesto Challenge this year, or want to make an additional contribution? You can help Graeme's healing journey by going directly to her GoFundMe: Fundraiser by Graeme Seabrook: Help Graeme Heal This Year's Manifesto Challenge + Live Zoom Celebration with Andrea Scher: Join us for this year's Manifesto Challenge! At the Mother's Quest MemberVault, register for the Challenge and move through a reflective process, with video recordings and a special journal to capture your thoughts. All will lead you to create a guiding framework, or manifesto, that can become an anchor for how you want to live your life. Then celebrate with me, recent podcast guest Andrea Scher and fellow MQ community members on May 24th. Register here for the live zoom event. Celebrate. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The experiences that shaped Graeme's childhood and conception of motherhood, including her observations of her own mother's experience parenting, the many times her family moved, and how her home and heart landed in Charleston Graeme's honest retelling of her early months of motherhood where she remembers holding her baby and feeling like there was a wall between them The E.P.I.C. spark moment that came when she shared her story online and received an outpouring of messages from other mothers going through the same experiences Graeme's “true truths” and the concept from her current favorite author, Octavia Butler, about God Graeme's description of the Ten Articles in the Mother's Bill of Rights, how she champions and helps mothers reclaim themselves through this framework, and the support she offers in her Mom Center. Graeme's E.P.I.C. Snapshot moment revealed reflections on the legacy of our matriarchs, the mothers we claim for ourselves, and how we can become the ancestor we aspire to now. Welcome to this first episode of Season Seven of the Mother's Quest Podcast! Today's episode was sparked by an experience I had on my most recent big milestone birthday. The morning of December 1st, I turned 50 and the podcast, which was a 45th birthday present to myself, turned 5. As I often do, I began my morning practice reading a book on my bedside table; the one I grabbed this time was a new one I had purchased called Wonder Seeker. Inspired by an idea within the gorgeously photographed pages, I hopped out of bed, wandered over to my bookshelf, pulled books from the shelves that were speaking to me on this occasion, and before I knew it had organized them into a pile which that became my "Manifesto for Becoming 50." There was such spontaneity, joy, and ease in this creative endeavor...qualities that emanate from the book Wonder Seeker and qualities I had long admired in Wonder Seeker's author Andrea Scher. So, when it came time to launch the new season and invite a guest to anchor our month-long Mother's Quest May invitation to reclaim our E.P.I.C. lives in the Mother's Quest Community, I knew just who to ask. What a delight it was when Andrea Scher said yes! Andrea is an author, artist, and life coach whose work is driven by her belief in the transformative power of creativity for joy and wellbeing. For nearly two decades, through her award-winning blog Superhero Journal, her Creative Superheroes podcast, and her bestselling e-courses, Andrea has thrilled others with their own power to find the magic all around them. Her new book, Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy straddles the world of creativity and mindfulness - playfully inspiring readers to live more vibrant lives full of presence, joy, and connection. Like the book, I felt like this whole conversation straddled the world of creativity and mindfulness. Andrea shares with us where she developed her unique lens of looking at things through "wonder goggles" as she calls them, about the big dreams she calls Mondo Beyondo, how she loved herself and her children through her divorce, and where she's finding joy today. Talking with Andrea reminded me that our creative endeavors have ripple effects we may not even know and that we don't need permission to pursue the things that we love. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did and open yourself to seeking more wonder in your life. I also invite you to join me and Andrea in saying "yes" to our own Mondo Beyondo dreams, to our own creativity, and to creating our own Manifestos, by signing up for the Manifesto Challenge, linked in the show notes, tapping into some of the creative ideas for expression from Wonder Seeker, like the book spine poetry I drew inspiration from, and then joining Andrea and me on May 24th to celebrate what we're creating and manifesting together. After our interview with Andrea Scher, author of Wonder Seeker, Katy is inspired to play a game that Andrea invented and outlines in her book. It's a storytelling game that has the intention not of trying to tell the most amazing and entertaining story, but to allow yourself to be completely spontaneous, to connect with the people around you, and get to know each other better. Listen to Katy tell some spontaneous stories, from bad jobs to animal encounters. ------------------------------------- ADVERTISE WITH US: Reach expats, future expats, and travelers all over the world. What is wonder? And how does it affect your life? Perhaps most importantly, what can we do to harness it? Today we are joined by Andrea Scher, author of Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake Up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy, a playful, practical, and effective guide to finding wonder and joy in your daily life. Andrea's passion and life's work is to cultivate a sense of wonder, and to help others do the same. She discusses how her need for wonder has grown out of her innate sensitivity, anxiety, fear, and past trauma, and how actively scanning for the good things in life can help her let go of anxiety and choose joy instead. Andrea explains how life-changing it can be to simply scan the world for wonder instead of danger, as we are biologically wired to do. How asking yourself “How can I make this more fun and easy?” will transform even the dullest of tasks. She also talks about how being open to wonder can even make you a kinder person. For nearly two decades, through her award-winning blog Superhero Journal, her international workshops, her Creative Superheroes podcast, and bestselling e-courses, she has thrilled others with their own power to find magic all around them. What is a Wonder Seeker: 1. Someone who actively looks for things that delight them. 2. A person who is curious and inspired, vibrant and open-hearted.How Wonder helps: calm our anxiety and keep us grounded and present. Using Wonder as a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness and meditation can be intimidating, using moments of wonder can help you lean into mindfulness without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated. What are Moments of Wonder: “where time is suspended and your heart opens and your breath catches and in the moment you are saying wow, you are feeling a connection, and it's a beautiful moment. Wonder Spotting: a version of a noticing practice. Actively choosing to look for a spot things of wonder. Do kids experience wonder more easily than adults? What are your first memories of wonder? Learning and connecting to others by exploring what sparks wonder in them: each of us has things that intrigue us or cause us to wonder. For one it might be the vastness of the universe, for another it could be technology, for someone else it could be the amazing capacity of the human body….and so on. It can be so neat to connect to others by way of wonder. Be a source of Wonder and not just a viewer of wonder: You can create magic and wonder in the everyday. You can create an intention to not only seek it out, but to create it and help others to experience everyday wonder and magic. It's episode 300!! I'm sharing my top 3 reflections of having a podcast (and a business) over the past 7 years. Hear stories about staying inspired, how to remain consistent, why just starting is the hardest, and all about the magic of trying new things. Thank you to YOU for tuning in, for sharing JSYJ with others, and for bringing joy into the world. I am sending you love, and wishes for comfort and joy. Over the past 300 episodes, I've had some learnings and find myself reflecting on them. Here's what I know to be true: 1. Just start. Whatever it is that you're longing to do, take that first baby step. The first step is always the hardest, and it's often the thing that keeps us from moving towards our purpose and our dreams. Recognize that it's likely fear that's holding you back, and that fear just wants to keep you safe. That doesn't always serve you, or your dreams. And, if you're already doing "the thing," you might find yourself dragging your feet to take future steps. Sometimes I dread editing my own show, but once I sit down, open the editing software, and get starting I love it, just like I always do. Procrastination is a dream killer. Get your momentum going by just starting. 2. Consistency. Consistency is about more than posting on a regular schedule. It's about the timing, about what you share, about the core of your message, it's about alignment between yourself and your business. It's also about showing up for yourself, and for your audience (or your customer, because consistency plays a role in product based businesses too), so they know when and where to find you. When I started I took the advice of Pat Flynn about remaining consistent with my podcast. In this episode, I also share a story about meeting Lewis Howes, and how that impacted my first year of podcasting. Consistency becomes easier when you're aligned across the board with what you love, what you do, what you talk about, and what feels right for your and your business or show. 3. Try New Things (or, living out "Well Planned, Loosely Held") When I started my show, and made the commitment to try it out for a whole year before making a decision on if I wanted to continue, my fried Christine Petty asked me the beautiful question of "imagine what is possible when you say yes to something for a year?" Her words have continued to inspire me, as they speak to the never ending possibilities that are out there when you say yes to your dreams. "Going off script" is another part of trying new things, and something that Andrea Scher shared about in episode 299. In her brand new book, "Wonder Seeker," Andrea talks about the idea of trying something brand new, and out of the ordinary and seeing what happens. In playing with my format for this show over the past 7 years, I have literally learned to go off script. I started with writing every solo episode out in its entirety. I no longer do this. In your show, or your blog, business, or life - find ways to keep things fresh. You can always keep with the core idea, and try on new "seasons," which offer a different way to look at a topic you've stuck with for a long time. Thank you all for tuning in! I have such deep appreciation for you, and wish you so much love, comfort, and joy. Episode 5 in this series about how we nurture ourselves in grief is a conversation with Andrea Scher. Andrea is the creator of Superhero Life, a hub for learning how to "use our voices, share our superpowers and live life in full color." She's a photographer, artist, life coach, mentor and a mama to two young boys. I have long admired Andrea for her openness and vulnerability in her online space and in person. She's real and fierce and curious and always looking for where the magic is. I asked Andrea to come on Nurturing Habit for this series on grief because she and her husband recently divorced, and I wanted to get her perspective on living through a personal grief while having such a public way of being in her work. What followed was so much more than that. It was a conversation where we discussed the stress that having a public persona can create, how hard it is to know how much to let our kids see when we are dealing with hard personal stuff, how completely normal it is to be messy sometimes, and how important it is to connect with others, especially when we are hurting. For Life on Purpose Episode #41, my guest is artist, photographer, life coach, and mentor Andrea Scher, the creator of Superhero Life — "where we all learn together to use our voices, share our superpowers and live life in full color."Andrea joins me for a great conversation about her work as a creative, coach, and healer; her Mondo Beyondo talk at WDS 2011 that helped inspire my first podcast (Radio Enso); her creative practices and classes, and much, much more!About: I’m Andrea Scher, creator of Superhero Life — where we all learn together to use our voices, share our superpowers and live life in full color. As an artist, photographer, life coach + mentor, I’m redefining what it means to be a SUPERHERO — ‘cause in my world, it’s got nothing to do with capes, spandex or sidekicks and everything to do with tenderness, intuition & baby steps of bravery.Back in 1995 when I was living in New Orleans, a tarot card reader told me that I was an artist. At the time, I held an oh-so practical degree in Economics, and rarely shared my passion for painting + photography with anyone. (But then, you can’t fool a good psychic.)She also said that my real work was as a healer — that I would heal people through my art. All of the hairs on my arms pricked up. All I could think was: Yes! Yes! But how? I never forgot that wise woman (she is still my spiritual advisor to this day) or that quiet promise I made to myself — to fulfill my true calling, and be a healing force in the world. But first, I had to start with myself. I began painting every day.I began painting . . . to find freedom + flexibility. To find the joy in the mess. To keep myself feeling engaged and alive and curious — not necessarily to save the world, but simply to fully experience it.But that’s the beauty of doing what we love — we delight ourselves first, and we can’t help but serve others in the process. To me, a Superhero is someone who invites her wisest, bravest, most alive self to come out and play, every day. This doesn’t mean having all the answers, being unshakably strong, or performing dramatic feats of heroism. It means being someone like you – and someone like me.Someone who is anxious and uncertain, oh, say, 50 – 80% of the time. Someone who wants to live a juicy, full, courageous life — but doesn’t always know how. Someone who understands that vulnerability just might be the greatest superpower of all.“To me, a Superhero is someone who invites her wisest, bravest, most alive self to come out and play, every day."Superhero Life is a love letter + resourceful playground for all my fellow creative superheroes. Moms who want to paint. Painters who want to write. Writers who want to travel. And travelers who want to come home.I’ve been writing + teaching online for nearly 10 years — back when the web was a much quieter place. My intention is to make Superhero Life feel like a virtual oasis — a space for unhurried healing, beauty, and joy to unfold. To learn more about Andrea and her work: http://superherolife.com/.
