Why You Feel the Way You Do: Understand and Heal the Source of Stressful Emotions by Reneau Z. Peurifoy M.A. https://amzn.to/472eR3h It was long ago that Roman poet Catullus (84-54BC) said, “We hate and we love, can one tell me why?” Have you ever wondered . . . Why You Feel the Way You Do? Now is the time for you to discover what's hiding behind the negative emotions, unhealthy response patterns and distorted thinking that keeps many from living a happier and more fulfilling life. Why You Feel the Way You Do takes you on a journey beyond your personality, your DNA, and your family upbringing, to pinpoint critical issues and self-destructive thought patterns that influence your well-being, followed by practical tools for managing negative emotions in a healthier way. • Learn about the emotional circuits we share with our pets. • Discover ways to quiet destructive emotional triggers. • Understand the role of guilt/shame and ways to manage them. • Reduce the negative effects of social media and devices. • Identify common destructive response patterns and learn how to change them. . . . plus much more! In Why You Feel the Way You Do, author Reneau Z. Peurifoy helps you emerge from those nagging, unhealthy emotional barriers, while providing practical ways to experience more joy in your daily life. Moving beyond emotional problems, Peurifoy also explores what positive psychology has recently learned about the three most important emotional factors that impact personal happiness. Show Notes About The Guest(s): Renaud Purifoy is an internationally known author, therapist, and teacher with over four decades of experience. He has written books that have been translated into multiple languages and has appeared on numerous radio and television programs. Renaud has been invited to speak at 11 national conferences for the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. Summary: Renaud Purifoy joins Chris Voss on The Chris Voss Show to discuss his latest book, "Why You Feel the Way You Do: Understand and Heal the Source of Stressful Emotions." Renaud takes listeners on a journey through the seven basic emotions that humans share with animals and explains how these emotions develop into triggers. He also explores the negative and positive core response patterns we have and shares three key factors that contribute to happiness. Renaud provides practical activities at the end of each chapter to help readers apply the concepts in their own lives. Key Takeaways: Renaud explores the seven basic emotions shared by humans and animals: anger, fear, seeking, play, lust, separation anxiety, and caring. Emotions serve as a way for the brain to index information and create associations with memories. Renaud discusses the importance of desensitization to reduce the negative effects of triggers and shares practical strategies for managing anxiety. Social media can have negative effects on mental health, and it's important to set boundaries and limit screen time. Building strong relationships and connections with others is a key factor in happiness and overall well-being. Quotes: "The brain is always making associations, and emotions are the way that your brain indexes information." - Renaud Purifoy "Desensitization is the process of gradually exposing yourself to triggers and managing anxiety to reduce their negative effects." - Renaud Purifoy "People are starved for real relationships, and that's why they're so susceptible to the addictive nature of social media." - Renaud Purifoy

His first book, Anxiety, Phobias and Panic has been selected from among a host of others on the market by major self-help groups and clinics addressing anxiety-related problems as the basis for their programs. His work with anxiety disorders led The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA), the nation's primary organization for anxiety-related problems, to invite Mr. Peurifoy to speak at eleven of their national conferences. In 2000, he left private practice to teach at a local college and write. Mr. Peurifoy committed his life to Christ in 1984. Since that time, he has taken seminary classes through Fuller Seminary and has participated in and taught a wide variety of topical and Bible studies in church. Music credits and more information can be found here: https://wp.me/pdcjXL-6b Shawna Caspi's biography describes her as, “a singer, a poet, a painter, a fingerstyle guitar player,” and explains: After touring her last album relentlessly, Shawna took a break to rest, reflect, and focus on songwriting. It was in those moments of stillness and solitude that she confronted her own experience of burnout, anxiety, and struggle with self-worth. In working through the shadowy parts of herself, Shawna discovered more ways to practice gratitude and appreciate little victories. This process of slowing down and looking inward resulted in her most raw, honest, and personal writing. She strives to tell the truth, even when it's uncomfortable, to empower listeners to come to terms with the parts of themselves and the world that they might find scary, and to look for hope in the dark. Shawna's album comes out on August 27, but you can preorder the CD or the postcards with her beautiful artwork at shawnacaspi.com or through Bandcamp. Again, I've got a little left over from my chat with Shawna that I'll share on the July 18 episode of my other show, Tell the Band to Go Home. Check that out at tellthebandtogohome.com Anxiety, like other mental illnesses, can be scary and isolating. These illnesses can be severely detrimental to a person's wellbeing and quality of life, and can even be deadly. Luckily, there are a lot of treatments available, so these illnesses are manageable and you can make life a lot better by getting help. I always recommend starting with a visit to a doctor, but if your doctor isn't being as helpful as you'd like or just gives you that list of strangers that you could call, find another doctor or reach out to an organization like The Canadian Mental Health Association (cmha.ca) or here in Manitoba we have a great organization called Anxiety Disorders Association of Manitoba (adam.mb.ca) but there are similar organizations in most areas.

According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada, “the 12 month prevalence for any anxiety disorder is over 12% and one in four Canadians (25%) will have at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime”. We often hear about and constantly bring up the word ‘Anxiety’ in our daily life, and sometimes even experience it ourselves. Yet most people have a lack of knowledge about the Anxiety concepts and easily misunderstand many myths that they heard through shallow conversations with friends. It’s time to dig deeper. It’s time to maze. Group Members: Scarlet Nguyen, Tonya Yin, Ellie Wang, Rozalyn Lee Episode 1: “Anxiety? This week on Relationships 2.0 I'm replaying a previous episode with David A. Carbonell, PhD author of The Worry Trick: How Your Brain Tricks You into Expecting the Worst and What You Can Do About It About the book: Are you truly in danger or has your brain simply “tricked” you into thinking you are? In The Worry Trick, psychologist and anxiety expert David Carbonell shows how anxiety hijacks the brain and offers effective techniques to help you break the cycle of worry, once and for all. Anxiety is a powerful force. It makes us question ourselves and our decisions, causes us to worry about the future, and fills our days with dread and emotional turbulence. Based in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), this book is designed to help you break the cycle of worry. Worry convinces us there’s danger, and then tricks us into getting into fight, flight, or freeze mode—even when there is no danger. The techniques in this book, rather than encouraging you to avoid or try to resist anxiety, shows you how to see the trick that underlies your anxious thoughts, and how avoidance can backfire and make anxiety worse. If you’re ready to start observing your anxious feelings with distance and clarity—rather than getting tricked once again—this book will show you how. About the author: David Carbonell, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist who specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders. He is the founder and director of the Anxiety Treatment Center, Ltd., a small group of psychologists which offers treatment of all manner of fears and phobias at several locations in and around Chicago, and the “coach” at www.anxietycoach.com, a self help web site for people troubled by fears and phobias. Dr. Carbonell is a recognized expert in this field, and has conducted training and seminars for a variety of professional groups, including the Anxiety Disorders Association of America; the International Association of Cognitive Psychotherapy; the United Airlines Employee Assistance Program; the Rockland County and Suffolk County Psychological Associations in New York; the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association; the Illinois Employee Assistance Professionals Association; the Illinois Psychological Association, the New York Psychological Association; and Northwestern University Medical School, among others. He regularly offers a day-long workshop for professional therapists on the treatment of anxiety disorders at locations around the country, sponsored by Pesi Healthcare, Inc. Dr. Carbonell is the author of Panic Attacks Workbook (Ulysses Press, 2004) and The Worry Trick (New Harbinger, 2016). He is a member of the American Psychological Association; the Anxiety Disorders Association of America; the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies; the Association for Contextual and Behavioral Science; the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy; the Illinois Psychological Association; and the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation. He is licensed as a clinical psychologist by the States of Illinois and New York.

Producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman join me by phone to discuss their film Wonder and their work as producers in film and television. David Hoberman David Hoberman (Producer) is the founder and co-owner of Mandeville Films and Television. He is one of the leading producers in the entertainment industry today. His Disney-based company, Mandeville Films, is among the most profitable and respected production labels in the entertainment industry. Other notable films include the critically hailed Academy Award©-nominated feature THE FIGHTER, starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams, and directed by David O. Russell. Produced for $25 million, the film went on to gross almost $130 million worldwide and earned a host of awards, including an Academy Award© nomination for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor and Actress Awards for Bale and Leo. Hoberman founded Mandeville Films in 1995 and signed a five-year first look pact with the Walt Disney Studios. In 1999, Hoberman signed a first-look deal for Mandeville at the Walt Disney Studios with Lieberman. Two years later, Lieberman became a co-partner in the company. Hoberman created the award-winning “Monk,” a one-hour series for USA Network. Executive-produced by Mandeville and spearheaded by Hoberman, “Monk” aired for eight seasons. Prior to forming Mandeville Films, Hoberman served as president of the Motion Picture Group of the Walt Disney Studios, where he was responsible for overseeing development and production for all feature films for Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures. During Hoberman’s tenure, Disney was often the top studio in domestic box-office grosses. In 1990, PRETTY WOMAN, supervised by Hoberman, was the top- grossing film of the year, and its soundtrack was the top-selling soundtrack of the year. Hoberman was also behind major blockbusters at the studio, including FATHER OF THE BRIDE, WHAT ABOUT BOB, DEAD POETS SOCIETY, ED WOOD, DANGEROUS MINDS, RUTHLESS PEOPLE, BEACHES, THREE MEN AND A BABY and HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS. While an executive at Disney, Hoberman championed the first-ever full-length stop-motion animation feature, Tim Burton’s THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. Hoberman started his career working in the mailroom at ABC and quickly ascended in the entertainment business, working for Norman Lear’s Tandem/T.A.T. in television and film. He worked as a talent agent at ICM before joining Disney in 1985. Today, Hoberman is an associate professor at UCLA’s Graduate School in the Producers Program. He sat on the board of the Starlight Starbright Foundation for more than 10 years, is a member of the Board of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and sat on the Board of the Los Angeles Free Clinic for six years. This week on Relationships 2.0 my guest is David A.

The Anxiety Disorders Association of America estimates that more than 4 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 54 suffer from chronic anxiety. And according to London's “The Independent,” in an 11 year period between 1993 and 2002, prescriptions for antidepressants rose by over 15 million. Further, we know that stress caused by worry contributes if not causes many of our known medical issues, including hypertension, heart attacks, diabetes, ulcers, headaches and strokes—and that's not all. It also increases the body's retention of the hormone cortisol which increases fat storage in the abdominal area. Yet, we can't seem to stop worrying. Well, our guest today comes to tell us that there is a solution and her plan to Transform Worry into Inner Calm, provided in both of her books, Calm and The Keys, gives us a four-step process to stop worry in its tracks and bring excitement, passion and personal empowerment back into life. Do you worry? This show has your name all over it.
