The Extraordinary Business Book Club

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2024 40:30

'It's an unfair advantage to have a platform, it massively helps, don't get me wrong. But it's totally possible to do it without one.' When Hasan Kubba and Ash Ali got together to write 'The Unfair Advantage: How you already have what it takes to succeed', they assumed they'd self-publish. They even put up a 'lean' version of the book on KDP. But as it turned out they had publishers fighting over it (sensibly, as it went on to be named Business Book of the Year), and Hasan has gone on to help other authors achieve the same feat.  While having a big following certainly helps in the battle for publishers' attention, Hasan argues that it's possible to get a book deal with a major traditional publisher without it. It's not unlike securing funding for a start-up, which is the other area in which he is an expert.  Discover the vital elements you need in place and the process to follow to get yourself and your book concept in front of agents and publishers with the best chance of success, with lessons for ALL kinds of content creation.

THE REVENUE CIRCUS 🎪

In this episode, Julia Lustig interviews Ash Ali about his experience working in a fast-paced environment as a sales engineer in a scale-up company. They discuss the different types of companies in the SaaS industry, the challenges and benefits of being the first pre-sales on the ground in a new market, and the importance of mentorship in professional growth. Ash shares his journey from a marketing background to pre-sales and highlights the skills and mindset required to thrive in the role. They also touch on time management and prioritization, the various responsibilities of a pre-sales person, and the role models and mentors who have influenced Ash's career. Here are the episode's key takeaways: - The challenges and rewards of being the first pre-sales on the ground in a new market - The importance of mentorship in professional growth and the value of both internal and external mentors - Effective time management and prioritization strategies for pre-sales professionals

Did you know you have an unfair advantage in your life? Something that gives you an edge over your competition. Even if you are not aware it, today's brilliant guests Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba have devised a simple framework that allows us to find out what our unfair advantage is and how we can use it to help us succeed in life and business. Ash Ali & Hasan Kubba are start up entrepreneurs. Ash skipped Uni and was the first marketing director of Just Eat; one of the Uk’s first tech unicorn companies now worth over £5billion. Hasan built a successful start up from his bedroom with nothing more than an online course and desire to escape the corporate ‘rat race’. They have both spoken at TEDx and advised and mentored hundreds of start-ups all over the world. Their new book The Unfair Advantage – How you already have what it takes to succeed…has taken the business world by storm, so settle back and enjoy this enlightening chat with Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba. This is Your London Legacy. “It’s what we do with it afterwards that makes the difference - and some people have a lot of luck in their life but they don’t take advantage of it.” 9:00 There are different kinds of luck we encounter in our lives. Life goes up and down and luck will land somewhere in a trough or valley, but as Ash and Hasan will tell you, the more you do and more you learn and opportunities you take on, the better off you’ll be when luck comes along. But luck also plays into their concept of the unfair advantage, and is an important thing to keep in mind if you find yourself comparing your life to other, perhaps more successful personalities. Afterall, some very famous people got “very small loans” from their parents for 1 million dollars…in the 1970s. “I’ll just sit there and read a book and go, well, it’s not like this in the UK.” 23:00 After what you might call a serendipitous or “lucky” meeting—when Ash and Hasan decided to sit down and write The Unfair Advantage, they wanted to do it with the mindset that their perspective was different than the usual late-aged ex-CEO white male in the United States that you often see dominating the business world. Their book is focused more on the Uk, and more so, they didn’t want the book to be prescriptive like many in the genre are. The book is set up to the core thinking you need to use to see how your perspectives fit uniquely into market spaces to bring value and new thinking to older, run in the ground modalities. The Unfair Advantage is an incredible read and can really help you expand your entrepreneurial ideas, pursuits, and spirt. This week we delve into how ideal a meritocratic world be. A speech by Alain de Botton about emotional education sparked our conversation. We talk about how detrimental it is that the society we currently live in is one where people are judged and categorized based off of just their job titles. We discuss ways in which we can reduce this from happening. From this viewpoint, Ayesha explained a justifiable way our society has been built and how life is not totally unfair. This is where the concept of unfair advantages comes up and is detailed by Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba in their book, 'The Unfair Advantage'. Elon Musk is one of the most successful, provocative, and meme-able people in tech. With his achievements so vast, innovations so mind-blowing, and ability to prove the naysayers wrong so relentless, he's often accused, half-jokingly, of being an alien or robot. But, assuming he is a mere mortal, how on earth did Elon Musk become Elon Musk? What was his background? What was his upbringing like? What role, if any, did luck play in his success? Is there anything we can learn from him? Or is he just a one-in-a-billion outlier — a superhero figure? (I mean, he actually was the inspiration for Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man.) Find out how, after becoming a hundred-millionaire in his 20s, his life went downhill so badly that he was broke, so broke that he had to borrow money to pay for rent back in 2008. How was he able to crawl back up from the brink, from the edge of the abyss to his now meteoric rise to the top, in the process of disrupting multiple legacy trillion-dollar industries? Welcome to Success Decoded, a new series about the remarkably successful: the entrepreneurs, the ultra-achievers, the game-changers. I share with you their stories, attempt to decode the factors that made them successful, and what practical lessons we can learn from them to find our own success. 'We followed the lean startup principles of creating a product... we actually did an MVP version of our book... we kept testing our material... And we thought, this is going well.' In this week's conversation, entrepreneurs and start-up strategists Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba reveal how they developed their 'unfair advantage' concept into a best-selling book through iterations and stress-testing, engaging an audience and attracting three publishers along the way.  We also talk about 'business smarts' - how street smarts, book smarts and creativity work together, and how reading widely can help you create more 'dots' to join up so that you can be smarter and more creative in your business, and in your writing.  A fascinating and frank conversation with two start-up legends, that will help you find and leverage the pants off your own 'unfair' advantage.

The subtitle of this book is ‘How You Already Have What It Takes To Succeed’, and I think that is just so relevant for all of my listeners because it really is true. It comes back to the famous quote from Henry Ford ‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t - you’re right’. Successful entrepreneurship is really 80% mindset and 20% skillset. there’s always someone else that has the answer. In today’s conversation, you’re going to hear Ash and Hasan tell you why we all have unfair advantages in life, whether we happen to be really analytical in the way we think, or we have a talent for something that might have been thought really geeky when we were at school - but actually now is our greatest asset. Or it could be that you just naturally have a great feel for people and can build relationships really easily. An unfair advantage is simply the element that gives you an edge over your competition ...and the quicker you can really get clear on that, the quicker you’re going to start seeing success and traction in your business. With Ash’s 20 years of hands-on experience creating and growing startups, combined with Hasan’s own digital marketing agency background and startup investment experience - you should definitely be taking note of what these guys are sharing with you today. This Week’s FreebieAsh & Hasan are giving away 2 signed copies of their brand new book ‘The Unfair Advantage’ and all you need to do if you’d like to be in the draw to win one of those is head on over to www.etrr.online/podcast98. During this interview Ash shares how his entrepreneurial career began when he was just 15 years old and quickly led to him selling his first award winning web business at the age of 19. Since then Ash has acted as a mentor for numerous startups, earning the nickname ‘the growth hacker’, and he’s always on the lookout for exciting and innovative companies to invest his time and money into. I particularly wanted to invite ash on to escape the rat race radio because I know that he can share with you some of the absolute fundamentals around starting a business, and if you listen carefully throughout the interview you’re going to learn proven steps which have been tried and tested by Ash when he sets about working on any new business ideas himself. Get your notebooks ready because this is one interview you are not going to want to miss if you're serious about starting or accelerating your own business in 2018. In this episode you’ll learn… Why there is always a battle between your heart and your mind when you want to start something new Why you shouldn’t start a business just because you hate your boss, you should start a business because you want to solve a problem / provide a solution for other people Why being in a job can actually be a great position because you have the opportunity to learn different skills which you will need to draw upon when you take the jump to start your own business Why you should always start by doing your market research before investing time and money into your business Why it’s important not to hide behind your computer and to get out and meet your potential customers face to face to get feedback on your ideas That if you want to be an entrepreneur you need to get used to being able to deal with rejection, and the test that Ash puts his own mentees to through Why all successful people are aware of their unfair advantage, and the MILES framework which can help you to discover yours The story behind Ash being appointed as the first Marketing Director of JUST EAT back in 2007, when the iPhone had only just been released How in the early days over 50% of people who found out about JUST EAT were via the stickers that they saw in the restaurant windows Why you must know thyself, get to know what you’re good at and what you’re not good at, but also understand that things can change Quotes: ‘You don’t want to leave your job because you hate your boss, you want to leave your job because there’s customers out there for your service or product’ ‘Salesmanship is a very important skill set and a trait for an Entrepreneur to have’ ‘People go to University now and buy degrees effectively as a commodity to put on their CV’s in order to get a job. As an Entrepreneur you don’t need this. You need expertise’ ‘I never had any money, and that made me really, really hungry to prove something’ ‘As marketing director of JUST EAT, what I found is that when I had the least amount of budget, that’s when I became more creative’ ‘The first thing is to make sure your product is right, and people are satisfied with it and that it works, before you go out and start promoting it everywhere’ ‘You’re not going to want to go back into work after you’ve become an entrepreneur’   Links & Resources mentioned in this episode: Ash Ali - The Unfair Advantage [Book Preview] - Sign Up Here   Guest Details: Ash Ali Official Website Ash Ali LinkedIn Ash Ali Twitter Ash Ali Instagram   Connect with Escape The Rat Race...within 12 months: Official Website Private Facebook Group   Thanks for listening!
