‘It's not a presentation or a business card. It's a conversation.' This Best Bits episode is a love letter to intentional conversations – the ones that unlock insight, build cohesion, shape identity and, ultimately, bring books into the world. As I looked back over the last few episodes, what stood out was how often my guests spoke about dialogue in all its forms – with ourselves, with each other, and with our readers – as the real work of writing, leading and changing the world. Hear from: Sarah Rozenthuler on the life-changing magic of energising, intentional dialogue; Claire Pedrick on the space between words and the attentiveness behind great coaching – and writing; Wendy Smith on paradox as a creative lens for thinking, leading, and writing; John Dore on the 'glue' that binds people together around ideas; Marissa Eigenbrood on publicity as a bridge into new conversations with new audiences; Petra Molthan-Hill on making complex ideas accessible and immediately useful; David Oxley and Helmut Schuster on creating a character to talk to an audience that's had enough of being talked at; Alison Jones (hello!) on how AI forces us to be more intentional than ever about the conversations we're having – and who we're having them with – as authors, publishers, and humans. If you're writing a business book, or even just thinking about it, this episode is packed with insights to get you talking.

Alison Jones, an industrial psychologist, leadership transformation strategist, and author of "Character Leadership," discusses her approach to cultivating character in today's leaders.  She emphasizes leading from the inside out, focusing on integrity, purpose, and serving others over ego-driven leadership. She also shares insights on the five essential states of leadership—awareness, acceptance, abundance, authenticity, and appreciation—and her SMART model for managing remote and hybrid work.  Additionally, she highlights the importance of intentionality, authenticity, and courage in leadership, and shares a powerful story from her volunteer trip to Zimbabwe.   https://bit.ly/TLP-432   Key Takeaways [01:42] Alison shares her excitement about getting a testimonial from Joe Theismann, a former NFL quarterback she admired. Then she briefly touches on Theisman's career-ending injury, and reveals her deep love for elephants and her involvement in conservation efforts, a passion her sister pointed out through her home's elephant-themed decor. [05:05] Alison describes character-driven leadership as leading authentically from within, prioritizing integrity, purpose, and serving others. While leadership varies by individual, she emphasizes that strong character is essential for sustainable, positive leadership. [09:19] She outlines five key leadership traits: Awareness, Acceptance, Abundance, Authenticity, and Appreciation. She said that these traits foster character-driven leadership by focusing on personal growth, integrity, and gratitude. To shift from scarcity to abundance, she recommends creating a safe environment where leaders can take risks and learn from mistakes. [14:59] She discusses three leadership states: victim, where life happens "to" you; victor, where things happen "by" you with a focus on personal success; and vessel, the ideal state, where leaders act as channels for positive impact, using their talents to serve others selflessly. [18:47] Alison shares her SMART model for remote work includes creating a dedicated workspace (Space), prioritizing exercise (Movement), engaging in social activities (Activities), maintaining healthy eating and hydration (Refrigerator), and managing time with clear work hours and breaks (Time). [25:35] She contends that bonuses don't guarantee employee happiness or engagement, and effective leadership rooted in character is crucial for genuine productivity and retention. With high disengagement rates and turnover costs, she notes that employees increasingly prioritize mental health and work-life balance over financial incentives. [28:24] She shares that she went on a volunteer trip to Zimbabwe in 2018, where she experienced the leadership of Bright during a bushfire. Despite the danger, Bright led the volunteers to fight the fire, earning her deep trust and admiration through his integrity and vision, and that event profoundly impacted her view on leadership. [36:30] Closing quote: Remember, “A great hallmark of mental wellness is the ability to be in the present moment, fully and with no thoughts of being elsewhere.” —  Wayne Dyer   Quotable Quotes "Character-driven leadership is about who you are as a person, not just what you do or the external results you achieve." "Leadership from the inside out is a focus on serving others and the greater good." "If it's not coming from a root of strong character, it's not sustainable." "Being a vessel leader means you're someone through which positive impact flows." "Creating a culture that encourages risk-taking and innovation is key to developing an abundance mindset." "Awareness, acceptance, abundance, authenticity, and appreciation are the five essential states of leadership." "Leading with character isn't just about doing the right thing; it's a strategic imperative." “A great hallmark of mental wellness is the ability to be in the present moment, fully and with no thoughts of being elsewhere.” —  Wayne Dyer   Resources Mentioned The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. When you have a big idea and message to share, and you want to get it out to more people you have so many more channels available today for achieving that.  Regardless of the number of platforms at your fingertips, your choice really comes down to two options - do you communicate one to many using speaking or writing? For business, two of the best options available are creating a talk or writing a business book.  Over recent times, with the advent of the internet and self-publishing, both of these have become more accessible. There is also a symbiosis between a book and a talk, with one being a vehicle to promote the other. The reality is, to have the biggest impact and reach the most people you probably should have both.  That's why I've invited Alison Jones, founder of Practical Inspiration Publishing, advocate of business books, Judge of the Business Book Awards and host of The Extraordinary Business Book Club, podcast onto the show. She is a veteran of the publishing industry, having worked at big names like Chambers, Oxford University Press and Macmillan (as Publisher and then Director of Innovation Strategy at Palgrave Macmillan).  She regularly speaks and blogs on the publishing industry, and is also an author in her own right.  She is going to be taking us behind the scenes in the publishing industry and answering lots of questions you may have about business book writing and speaking. Enjoy! What you'll discover: Why Alison is such a champion of business books. Whether the proliferation of business books has cheapened the value of becoming an author. How business book authors should use stories.  The biggest mistakes authors make when writing a business book. Whether business authors need a talk. What should come first, the ‘talk' or the ‘book' What ‘exploratory' writing is and how it can help you. How to do it. What made Alison decide to write a book about it. What part speaking plays in getting Alison's own message out there.   All things Alison: 10 Day Book Proposal Challenge  Websites: https://alisonjones.com https://practicalinspiration.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alison-jones-9b09893/  Alison's Podcast: http://extraordinarybusinessbooks.com/podcast-episodes/    Books & Resources*: Exploratory Writing: Everyday magic for life and work by Alison JonesThe Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks   Resources: Want to get better at finding and sharing your stories then check out our FREE Five Day Snackable Story Challenge Practice your speaking & test your content in a safe space in The Speaking Club ‘Live' Membership Want to create a signature talk that sells, then check out our Nail Your Signature Talk in 60 Days programme.  Want to find out about working with me 121 then book a call here. https://www.saraharcher.co.uk   Thanks for listening!   To share your thoughts:   Share this show on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. We will learn: How a history of trauma affects recovery. How allies can reduce the shame and stigma that can prevent people with substance use disorder from asking for help. How to support your loved ones with the 4 pillars of recovery. Sometimes I wonder, what's harder… struggling with addiction, or watching someone you love struggle and feeling totally helpless? And maybe we can't speed up someone's lessons. Maybe that's not how it works. What's trickier is that often the things we do to try to help, actually make the problem worse. So what do we do? How can we help a loved one both before they're ready to help themselves, and then when they're starting to see a better way? That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Alison Jones Webb. She's a recovery ally, advocate, author, and seasoned public health specialist. She's the author of Recovery Allies: How to Support Addiction Recovery and Build Recovery Friendly Communities. When Joseph Pilates was interned at Camp Knockaloe on the Isle of Man during WWI, little could he imagine that over a century later, a museum would be built very near where he was interned. The Knockaloe Visitor Center took almost ten years from its concept to its grand opening in 2019. At the helm of this visionary project is our guest today, Alison Jones. Although we know that Joe Pilates was interned at Camp Knocklaoe, there is a larger story here and Alison is going to share it with us.For more information about the Knockaloe Visitor Center: https://www.knockaloe.imMusic Credits: Soul Blues Piano Shuffle by Boom Zoom

By Alison Jones I am 55 years old and I have been overweight or obese since childhood. My first attempt to lose weight was under the care of a hospital dietician. I was 10 years old. My weight really started to be an issue after having my children. I dieted a low calorie plan, lost some, then gained it all back. My highest known weight was 158 kg in 2003. Mostly my weight sat around 127 kg. I developed type 2 diabetes and lymphedema in both legs At my worst,( in 2003), my left calf measured 93 cm. By the summer of 2020 I was taking over 100 units of mixed insulin a day and my weight had risen to 142 kg. August 2020 I started Intermittent Fasting at either 16:8 or ,18:6. September 1st I started OMAD. Within days I stopped insulin. My Hba1c has fallen to 5.7 (39) below the diabetes threshold. My lymphedema is greatly improved. I have lost 30kg and numerous dress sizes. I have a long journey still, but this works! News My book The Fasting Highway is available on Amazon in both paperback and kindle.
